Because it's awesome. 🙂 I think there's just something special about owning physical-media for those who aren't just casual movie watchers but are fanatical about cinema. By very favourite films I just want on my shelf in the best quality possible with all the trimmings, though I don't consider the special features a huge deal tbh, it's a nice extra but if they aren't included then I don't sweat it so long as the quality of the restoration/transfer is high. I haven't bought many releases this year so far tbh, money has been a bit short & there's not been much that's interested me, but I just preordered the Drive Limited Edition 4k & the June Indicator releases (Columbia Noir #5 & Pastor Hall) & am looking forward to getting them.

Don't sweat it .. my spending power for physical also took a hit this year after some pretty good ones. I've had to let a lot of things I'd normally blind but through you the keeper. But I think it's a blessing in disguise given my current storage issues and re-vamping of my setup. I'm really focusing more on things I really want (quality) over things I think MIGHT be great.... Agree that Columbia Noir 5 Bogart set is a must have. As are the most recent Second Sight titles. I really want to get Drive, The Witch and Dog Soldiers but will see how we go. I have yet to pre-order but certainly hope to do so soon. Eureka and 88 have also been the labels stealing most of my money was well as grabbing some of these nice recent Kino Lorber 4k releases.

For me, I never had cable as a kid, so any movie was always on VHS by the time we saw it. So I got so used to collecting VHS as a kid so I could watch my movie/show anytime I wanted. I do the same today, I rarely go to movies, but wait fo the physical 4K or Blu-Ray before watching the movie. Plus, I love special features, and you don't get those at the movies.

You explained the same reason why I am obsessed with books and having them physically. Spent hours exploring libraries as a kid and as you said.. endless possibilities, adventures... Tales... Worlds... Characters... Information and learning. But yeah I think for me the same thing then translated to music and films also. Like you I was a regular frequenter of the video store in the 80s heyday and beyond. They were very special and important places in those days ... They had launch events for certain films etc. Not things they did in the twilight of the vid store. I remember when my local Movieland first got it's copies of Return of the Jedi on VHS and they had a guy dressed like Darth Vader at the store giving away signed ROTJ posters (signed by the fake Darth ..lol). Sadly I've long since lost that but the wonderful memories remain. Our local Milk Bar also had a small collection of videos and the owner looked like Michael Caine... Lol. He had lots of obscure titles which was great and he let us get whatever we wanted. Never asked us to show ID. Was great! Of course there are other reasons you touched on for having physical media but I can't wait to get my collection cleaned up and shelved and accessible again because I love that feeling of browsing and picking up a book... CD/Vinyl. . Or DVD/ Blu ray when the mood hits and seeing what that particular one has to offer and deciding if that's the right adventure for my current mood. Streaming just doesn't do that for me as much as the physical experience of this does. Maybe I'm a dinosaur but that's how I grew up. Maybe the post Millennials who grew up on digital won't care too much in the future about physical media but there are so many other risks and dangers of just entrusting custodianship of our content to big corporates that this doesn't sit comfortably with me and never will. And of course.... Movies are the closest things the human race currently has to a the machine. So that's also cool! Holding a physical copy to me only amplifies that feeling.

There is no need to justify your hobby. Those people that ask why you do it, why you spend your money when you can stream, well they are missing the point. Next time you get asked that, ask the person what they spend their money on and get them to justify it. I bet they can't articulate it as well as you just did. Your point at around the 5 minute mark, collection as personification , is spot on Graham. It's the thrill of the hunt partly - I used to collect records, in the past when it was a more meaningful pastime and you actually had to traipse around record fairs hoping to find hidden gems (usurped by, of course, the internet, where almost instantaneously, you could find most records or just download the tunes) and I still recall the thrill of finding long sought after items - anthropological studies suggest that men collect stuff as a way of organising a chaotic world around them, systematising a world, and even as a way of displaying to the female of the species their ability to gather i.e. security, strength, survival...hahaha but maybe that's too profound and dour. Personally I think films are a thing of beauty and I derive pleasure from the hobby. Since when has pleasure been a bad thing? Nobody should begrudge you a passion - life is tough enough without having to forgo any pleasure or passion.

Most people don't get it, and that's okay. I get it, you get it, lots of others like us get it. I love looking at my shelf seeing my movies. I can pull anything off the shelf to watch and I dont have to pay loads of subscriptions to look and see if its even available when I want to watch it. I just picked up "Return Of The Living Dead" myself. I remember watching it one night in '99 after I came home from working in a pub, I was 16, and it brings me right back to those times when I put it on. It's fantastic, good luck trying to get that movie on streaming. Physical is so so good. Streaming is good too but the rise of all the different services is going to make people selective (due to price) which will limit options and if like me you want to watch specific movies, collecting physical media is a must.

There's just something more sentimental about owning physical media, and you never have to worry about it being on a streaming platform for a limited period of time. For example, The Game was on Netflix for a while, and I thought "I'll get round to watching that at some point" only to find that they removed it :(

I collect for 'accountability'. Buying Criterion or Vinegar Syndrome and the like, I know they are going to do a bang up job in presenting the movie without bias. Plus some great insight and extras for them as well. Streaming is just too vulnerable to mishaps, misrepresentation, discontinuation, and possible 'censorship' depending on the service, parent company, investors, etc. Which company is supplying what transfer to which channel? How reliable is the cable company? Is full baud rate coming through if one's in a apartment or condo sharing? 9 out of 10 times when I'm checking out new movies I really don't care. As long as I can see it and hear it I'm happy. But there's always that 10th movie that blows me away, haunts me, makes me want to see it again as clear or better than before. And physical media I hope will ALWAYS be there to ensure that 10th one is a KEEPER!

These are some good reasons for collecting films, for sure! I like to have favorites that I will want to watch multiple times. I will collect from a series or director or genre (but mostly ones that I at least like, so I am not a completist by any means). I really do enjoy sorting, rearranging, and browsing the shelves of my collections. When I was younger I used to love going to any kind of media rental place or store or library, and I have always loved books, movies, music, and games--for a long while I used to hope to open my own shop, although I would have had a fit using my own items especially for rentals as I have a hard time getting loaners back that have a slight speck of dirt, let alone a scratch or scuff! Now, I can have my own library or video store, of a sort, and I like to be able to access my own copy of something, and also sometimes it is hard to find things streaming, and in the correct version. Yesterday I was not feeling well and not having the best day, and I needed a pick me up, so I went for Jackie Chan's Mr. Nice Guy which I had seen a few years back, but only in the shorter cut. Since then, I bought it from Warner Archive, so I was able to see the original version, I could rest in bed and watch it projected in giant size up on the wall, and by the end I was feeling a bit better. When I could get out and about in the past, I used to do a lot more culling of titles, trading in, selling, and such, but now I am a lot more careful about what I purchase. I do think that a lot of the stuff I collect reflects something about me, although there are titles I was given which would not have made it in otherwise (I'm looking at you, Booty Call!--though I did have fun watching that with a buddy many years ago, so that has good memories, too). Also, there are so many that remind me of watching with my dad (who passed away eleven years ago), and even those that I have now that I had given him over the years, including going all the way back to some VHS tapes such as From Russia with Love and Dances with Wolves from the early '90s, to the Conan two-movie set, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and The Transporter on DVD, to something like the first version of The Godfather trilogy on Blu-ray that he gave me way back when I first got a PS3 and could start collecting Blu-rays. These and more, I'm sure, are reasons why I also love to collect physical media.

Collecting movies gives me great pleasure. That's simplistic but at my core it's also true. I've tried a streaming service, you pay your money watch what interests you but I found it to be a hollow experience. You don't actually get anything to keep. I love the smell of new physical media, especially the booklets. The covers often are fantastic and as you stated, a lot of movies have memories attached to them. Many of the movies I collect will never be on a streaming service ever. Some releases are rare and numbered out of a possible 50/100/150 and when they sell out it will never be released by anyone again. It really is for everything that falls under pleasure.

May I recommend re-watching Body Double to those that didn’t enjoy their first watch/es. Also, you don’t hear from me often because I actually agree with most of what you say. Sometimes it’s hard to say why you like something that is may be off-putting to others. Doesn’t make us freaks does it?! Better than being a bank robber or some (I.e. drugs or booze) habit that takes all your money and you have nothing to show for it. 4k is the latest addiction (I’d be interested in suggestions on reselling and trading from your community). I’m still on the lookout for a decent soundbar with Dolby atmos at a decent price... btw, love your new release videos. Keeps me in the know because I don’t do social media as I get older. I tend to buy physical as the streaming services are not quite there yet with content. Soon as they are where paramount and hbo max are in the UK, I'll be selling mainly. Think a lot of Disney fans have done this already as they're physical films use to be so expensive but are so much cheaper and always on offer. I will of course keep a few that will very likely never be on a streaming service, basically a film not made by a big film company like WB, Comcast and Disney etc. I also feel quality on streaming will beat physical at some point. IMAX enhanced is already a big start and I've noticed sound has improved greatly on new films on services. I'm really not bothered by owning something. But I think there is a big growth in this because other things in life are out of people's dream. A great example is owning home which is now considered a luxury, when before soon as you start working you had a mortgage. I think this is why physical items which are luxuries have gone through the roof money wise, because it's the closest people can get to having something with some kind of feeling of ownership of that film or album.
