Fascinating experience! Thank you for sharing this. A lot of people need to know about this these stories tend to hide themselves. Many converts feel embarrassed to admit they have made a mistake and realise it only after they are massively invested so they dig deeper. Your genuineness didn't allow you to live this lie. Love that you two did this! Like you said, it's hard to find content by ex-converts. I was also Muslim for almost the same ages as Emily, 15-22. We have a similar story in a lot of ways. It's so lonely to be a convert, and while I've been much happier since leaving, it feels even more impossible to find people who really get me and my weird experiences, ya know? I avoid telling people that I used to be Muslim to avoid being judged, but feel like people can't possibly know me without knowing that I used to be Muslim. Anyway, thanks for sharing Emily :)

I had left islam too after hearing about sex slaves but then I decided to actually study all the major religions and thankfully I am now a better muslim and memorized the entire Quran like 100 million others. Try to be objective instead of being subjective. You may not like some things in islam but it doesn't mean Islam is false lmao😂. Facts don't care about your feelings as they say. Quran is proven to be the word of God. It's the only book which gives a falsification test that No human being could make a book like quran even if all of mankind tries to make one together. You don't even need to go further, just look into basmala and code 19 then read sura 74:30-40. No human being could mathematically code basmala (the probability is 1 in a quadrillion!) and it's in start of almost every chapter.

thank u for sharing i’m a recent revert of 5 months n im starting to question everything. i was definitely shown the disney land version of islam and am now finding out the truth n im genuinely sick to my stomach. i’m also queer and it started making me feel guilty for something i spent years accepting after being in catholic and christian schools growing up. i honestly don’t know what to do. i’m so embarrassed. i also wear niqab and am very visibly muslim and i suffer with complex mental health difficulties and i just know ppl have been waiting for me to change my mind bc i struggle with identity disturbance. i’m just so embarrassed and feel so stupid. i’m so thankful that i found this video! tysm! if anyone has any resources for me that would be really helpful as i am feeling incredibly scared and isolated.

I can relate to much of what she says. I converted when I was 18, even though I knew very little about islam. I had a very rosy picture. I wore the hijab out of conviction, but only when I left I realised that I was hiding not just my outer self, but even more my inner self. My personality got stiffled. My mum too was accepting, even though she was atheist. Other relatives, also atheists, were not accepting. But none of them ever confronted me with what I believed and what islam stood for. Why? I was only 18! What did I know? Why did they leave me to flounder and waste so much of my life? I even brought up my kids as muslims, which made things difficult for them too. Sure, I chose to become a muslim, and I take responsability for my choices. But I still feel my family should have taken theirs too. So much pain and hurt could have been prevented. I agree that it's very hurtful for ex-muslims that were born into islam to bad-mouth converts. It's so easy to judge. But a convert's life is often hard. They often lose family and friends when they convert, are put under enormous pressure to be the perfect model muslim (even more so when they're a woman). Even though you're surrounded by people, it can be very lonely. Most converts I know are sold a very romantic picture of islam. It takes time to discover the ugly side. Nowadays it's easier, with the internet and social media. I didn't have that in the 80s. Just as the parents of these born muslims weren't stupid etc, nor was I. Just naive. Many of us are. Compassion shouldn't be so difficult. People are just people. We all make mistakes, we all are flawed. None of us is born wise.

In the end I had to conclude islam made no sense. Too many contradictions, fallacies, mistakes, superstition, etc. I went into islam ignorant, left it with knowledge.

One thing I’ve noticed about people leaving Islam . They have never refuted the creed of Islam or the Qur’an it’s more about their own freedom. Poor 14 year old girl moved to a religion which she didn’t even prior study . She joined Islam because of her feelings . That’s a weak foundation.. I’m yet to find a convert who has successfully refuted Islam . You’ll find the jokers who twist and turn words to suit their agenda to malign the religion but still yet to this day I haven’t found one . This is why I know Islam is the Truth . She touched on inheritance, I would of loved to see what she thought the so called “footnotes” say and explained herself on why it’s bad ? .. truth is people who leave Islam and go towards atheism or the likes is simply because they want to because of their own personal freedom . Nothing refuting Islam or it’s creed . Been through atheism , Christianity , jewdism , no answers . Islam is the only religion till this very day is standing and growing and it’s not changing it’s scripture for the Morden times . It’s always had the answers .

Great discussion! As an atheist I often find myself forgetting/dismissing the importance of appealing to emotions in order to get people to “convert” to a religion and stick to it. It seems to me that most people haven’t refined their analytical skills enough to see some of the logical gaps one has to fall into to believe in a particular religion, it explains why it’s so easy to believe in a religion as a child, because you haven’t yet been able to develop those critical thinking skills. It’s clear that she is a smart woman who always had a solid foundation to help get herself out of those systems. Quite a journey she’s had! You briefly touched on this but I am curious to learn more about your thoughts on people who say not to critique and challenge Islam and Islamic practices and ideas because doing so is a form of cultural imperialism. Personally, I find that perspective itself to be problematic, because it’s like you’re suggesting Muslims are incapable of understanding, and I think that attitude is ultimately what actually leads to a lot of broader societal aspects of alienation and conflict in the long term. The perspective just seems inherently “othering” to me.

Plus, there is potentially a lot to lose from being wrong. What you lose through being wrong is something that one might not ever see in their lifetime, but it’s a serious trade-off to sacrifice truth for a perceived truth and center one’s life around that.

hey i know this comment is not super related to this topic, but do u know any good atheist therapist in bangladesh, or some therapist who at least would not try to force islam on me? I feel like i really need therapy, and i did see one until last year. she was a good therapist however she would tell me to leave religion later and not now and read quran everyday when i've made my stance clear. I also told her that i believe im right but im not forcing it on her, so neither shud she, but she wud still smtms do it. so i wud LOVE to she a therapist who does not do this. therapist shud be there to help me navigate my life with my own values, and not change em, unless it's causing me to die or do very dangerous stuffs, which i am not.

"The objective opinion of scholars"?? This is a redundant and an outright silly statement. Scholars disagree on many many things. For example, the hanafi madhab only punishes homosexuality through slashing while the other three give the death sentence. Some scholars argue that in a sharia dominated country, new churches and synagogues can be built while others argue it cannot be and only the old ones can be repaired. Heck, scholars are divided on the issue of the moon "splitting" and what it actually means.
