I loved the style of this video, like sitting in the room while you evaluate. I know you want to sit with things for a lot longer, and that's fair. But there's something really interesting about seeing your reactions and thoughts happening in real time, even knowing that they are provisional. Also really like how you consistently focused on getting the usable tones and functions that you need, knowing that those are, and being able to explain that and how the product is meeting or failing to meet them. (I actually think you struggle a bit with this in guitar land, where narrative or idea of a guitar is often a big factor in your interest.) Anyway, just wanted to say that I did appreciate seeing your off-the-cull reactions to new gear, and that I'd rather see this than not see anything because the full evaluation etc would take too much playing and production time.

Yeah agree with the above it’s cool to watch you tweak the controls. Sometimes I’m afraid to trust my ear or go too far down the rabbit hole. Because I think that the presets are optimal since the company did them. But when you said “why does every amp company make their presets so over done”. I was like “yeah that right! Sounds way too much”. So I think I’m going to trust my ear more and tweak away. Thanks for the real review. Btw I own a SPK2 and appreciate it more now. 😊

@caseyodonnell66212 ай бұрын
Got mine last weekend. This is much better than the Spark 40. As it is, it's a great practice amp where the THR's (I have the original 10, 30, and the 100HD) are just great amps. The sound quality of the Spark 2 is improved but it's still a little boomy, particularly when playing bluetooth audio. I think your video illustrates this and reflects my experience as well. At least the tonestack works well and you can cut the boominess out of the guitar signal. The audio quality is decent out of the speakers but it's does get a little spicy in the treble and has some sibilants in s's and t's when playing bluetooth audio. I double checked, and this isn't present with headphones or via the line outs so I'm pretty sure it's the drivers. I really like the improved sound and added functionality. It's great for bedroom players like myself. The looper and the app are outstanding. Line out into and through a good set of monitors and all of those issues are addressed. But if you're going to do that, you can save yourself some money and just get the mini or go and get everything but the looper. Thanks for always giving your honest opinions Phil. Everyone else is just praising Positive Grid on this. There's value in pointing out a products shortcomings so people can make educated buying decisions.

Unless you really need a smaller one, surely the relatively small price dif between the Mini and the Spark 2 makes it a no brainier to get the Spark 2. ? PS. I don’t have either, but v interested.
@caseyodonnell6621Ай бұрын
@@longjonwhite Not sure. I've tried the original Spark 40 which I hate so much I never use it and the Spark Go which I like and use all the time. The Go doesn't suffer from any of that bass bloat at all. I can't say with any authority but my suspicion is that the Mini likely is similar. What gets me about the Spark amps is that if the intent is for it to be a modeler, then you'd want relatively neutral speakers so that your EQ settings would sound reasonably similar going from the go, to mini, to spark 40, to spark cab. That way you could set up presets and just go from bedroom, to jamming with friends, to a gig without having to change anything. That's not how these seem to work which I think is a little weird.

@@caseyodonnell6621 Thanks mate. I may just stick with my Bose S1 Pro. It doesn't have all the FX etc. only reverb, but it does have two separate channels, (in addition to the Bluetooth input), so it is great if you want to sing while playing either guitar or keyboard.

I haven't tried the Spark, but I recently bought a Nux Mighty Space as an "upgrade" from my Yamaha THR10iiW. I returned the Nux for several reasons, one of which is a human factor issue that seems to be shared by the Spark. I use the amp on a desk while sitting down and, like you in this video, facing me. One of the things I love about the THR is that the knobs are right on top, in front and visible. The Nux and the Spark have all the knobs recessed in the back of the amp, so to adjust anything you need to stand up, or at least crane your neck and bend way over, to see the knobs and labels. Seems like a really poor design decision. For now, I'm sticking with the Yamaha, though I really do wish they'd add a looper.

The line out of the Spark 2 is going make it nice. I don’t bother with the Spark’s overdriven tones. I just get a great clean tone (using the ODS 50 mostly) with the gain set just below break up. I am at this video looking for a replacement for my old Line 6 Spider IV 30, which has chorus, delay, phasor, etc, yet each so overpowering as to sound ridiculous and mostly unuseable. One thing I have noticed about such amps is that the effects tend to be a lot more sensitive to pickup volume and tone settings than traditional pedals, but still challenging to get what you want. The Spark mini sounded really good. If stereo wasn't desired it would be the better of the two Spark amps. I use a Blackstar ID Core V2 Stereo 10. There are two small speakers working in psycho-acoustic stereo. It fills the room with stereo sound. The cabinet is very directional. Which means it is really much louder when the speakers are pointed at the listener. There are six or seven channels of sounds of various levels of gain. Each setting allows one saved preset. There are sixteen effects available within four groups of four. I can't say it is the best small amp but it is really good for the price; better than Fenders or others. Blackstar makes several versions that are nearly the same; only the power outputs are different (10-150 watts). I would like to see a Roland JC120 compared to a Blackstar ID Core Stereo 150.

I put a sock and didn't noticed much, also duct taped the port hole and also didn't noticed much of a difference, for me the key to tame the bass was to use the EQs, downside is that you cannot use the modulation FX as they are in the same slot as the EQ

With headphones on, the Spark sounds like there's a blanket over top of it. The Yamaha is so much clearer and "real" feeling. For the current sale on the Spark 1 though (60% off of the Yamaha), that's a pretty significant price difference.

I like your choice on guitar for this review , seems to have been a no brainer 👌🏼🥸 Spark mini hard to beat sounds great !

I have a spark 40. It’s easy to turn it into a Spark 2 using a woman’s stocking or foam that is inserted into the hole between the speakers. Then the booming bass goes away. Instead of Spark 2, I'd rather buy an inexpensive processor if I need a loop.

Hey Phillip, did you ever made your own review of the Yamaha THR 30? That's something I'd like to see. Cheers from Miami FL

Biggest difference I can see is that for the $50 difference is that Spark 2 has 10w more of power, faster processing, has a looper, drums and a tuner.... Seems few if any practice amps have loopers.

I like your video comparison, but it makes me think you just haven't spent enough time with the Spark 2 in order to find the settings you prefer. In the video, you try various settings, make a couple quick adjustments, then like it much better after your tweaks - so maybe that's part of the issue? I haven't tried the Spark 2 yet but am considering it.

I have the original Spark 40 and a Yamaha THR1011. I've never warmed up to the Spark 40 and use the Yamaha more. At some point I'm thinking I will donate my Spark 40 to a music student. I think I am done with the Spark amps.

DId you ever experiment with modifying the speaker port hole between the two speakers? Many say it helps a lot with the heavy bass issue.

I put a sock in it. I think it’s the main issue which is why the mini doesn’t have it.

The Spark Mini is still my favorite. I own all of them and just bought the Spark 2 in the preorder and it arrived yesterday....I am still undecided if it was worth it.

I'm selling my 40, and keeping the GO, but my main has become the Boss IR-2 for all the stuff I do at home.

The improvements in just the short time you demo'ed has me thinking that it could be configured/tailored to your ear quite readily. Factors like the bass practice amp ability, likely improved blue tooth music tone plus the added features make it appealing to me. It's cheap enough to be a fun impulse buy, too.

All I had to do with the spark 40 was add the EQ pedal in the app and adjust EQ to make it sound less bassy

I got my Spark 2 months ago. I was drawn to the new features like the looper and the built-in battery. Honestly, I expected more. First of all, I was hoping they would fix some issues from the previous version: The device cannot play sound from both the computer and the phone at the same time, which is very inconvenient because, among other things, I use the Spark as an external audio device for my computer. The constantly blinking rhythm indicator on the button is really annoying. The new features also turned out to have their downsides: The battery doesn’t come included. You can only control the looper with the more expensive version of the footswitch. The looper itself is very basic; it’s just there for the sake of being there. The drum machine is oddly designed like a looper with drums. If you just want drums, you have to play a demo from the drum track selection menu, and the tracks don’t have names. The preset selector knob: they added a button, but removed the stopper, so now you can’t blindly switch to the desired preset based on the stopper’s position. The case became slightly bigger, but the “tin can” effect is now more pronounced. This also applies to the mobile app, which isn’t part of the device itself. There are a bunch of annoying issues that the developers aren’t in a hurry to fix. My conclusion is this: if you already have the first version of the Spark, there’s no need to upgrade to the second one unless you desperately need a battery and a simple looper. If you’re looking for a device, I’d recommend checking out the Nux Expanse. It’s a bit more expensive, but it comes with a battery, a footswitch, and wireless guitar connectivity. Plus, it has both a looper and a drum machine.

Oh, I forgot to mention. The strap upgrade is actually a really cool feature. The strap on the first version was awful-it literally crumbled to dust just sitting on my shelf.

You can mitigate some of the extra bass of the original Spark 40 by removing the grill and plugging the bass reflex port.

I need a travel amp and torn between Spark 2 and THR10II. I'm just looking for a solid metal and a clean tone in my room. Which one would you recommend?

One thing to keep in mind with these type of products is how long updates or possible updates will be… the spark 2 is supposed to have way more dsp and that could open up other features/amp models I have the mini and just got the spark 2 I also love the mini but if you turn the volume up to a certain point then it gets really messy. If you were to play at Speaker phone volume the mini sounds great ..the spark 2 you can get decent loud and holds up nice, looper is great to have and I’m thinking updates will hit for the spark 2

When I use the EQ pedal in the app on my spark 40, there isn’t a bass issue anymore. I just turn on the pedal and pull some bass out.
