With a law degree and legal background there are alot of opportunities in the area of data protection. There is such a high demand for data protection consultants or privacy analysts in pretty much any company. Even a 4 week online ourse in data privacy or a short internship can get you a foot in the door!

I honestly relate to your story. I’m literally stuck i always knew that a law degree was tough but I was determined that I will succeed and now I’m just losing all hope. Obviously the pandemic hasn’t helped much but we all know that the law industry is specially made for a certain number of elite individuals 😒

You go into it with so much desire to succeed but yeah it’s tough and there’s a lot of bias unfortunately

I find it ridiculous that they keep asking for experience , if no one is giving experience where do you initially get it from ? I feel like now that it’s competitive law firms are really picky , some individuals have gained paralegal jobs without no legal knowledge whatsoever ... it’s so inconsistent ! Thank you for this video , I am studying the LPC at present and finding a similar situation to yours

Yeah it always goes back to the old cliche “it’s not what you know it’s who you know” 😒

I defo agree with with the A levels point. A lot of law firms ask for good A levels seems like they are even more important then the degree.

It’s crazy right? I see people who have achieved a first in their degree, spent ££££s on the LPC, done loads of extracurriculars and shown themselves to be committed to law, but it seems a lot of firms still focus on exams taken 16-18 🥴 It’s really frustrating.

It’s a way of filtering applicants that all have a 2.1 and experience but if ur cover letter and watson glazer is good, u acc have a good chance of getting an interview

@@rosaverse here you need to just get yourself through the door... i know what you mean but find a way to get through it and with experience nobody cares for A levels... or re do them... it will take a year to do them again... you could do Law and two others you think you can do well in.. a year of hard core study you could do well... or literally work for free at firm...

Great video Alayo, feel like this side of law isn't discussed enough on legal youtube. You put so much effort in and some academic barriers just remain which I think is completely unfair. Also the requirement for legal experience for certain jobs even though it's practically impossible to get such experience in the first place is ridiculous! Just wanted to offer a different perspective though after reading some of the comments. I applied for one firm (magic circle) who must not have a focus on A Levels as mine were ABC, I got the vac scheme and then a TC. This was in my final year of uni, average grade was a 66. Graduated with a first. I had done quite a few extra curriculars but nothing too crazy - secretary of a sports club, volunteered at the law centre, peer mentoring etc. I definitely agree that most firms are very grade based, as I was rejected by two other big firms in my second year, but I do think that luck has something to do with it too. Hoping you find the path that is right for you

Wow, my story is quite similar to yours. Nigerian and always knew that i wanted to be a lawyer. I got bad alevels and for that reason alone its been such a barrier in terms of applying for training contracts/vacation schemes hence the reason why I have given up on being a solicitor. Graduated with a 2:1 in Law and Criminology though.

I get the struggle... Ive just submitted my PhD in materials science doing my oral exam next month... Was applying everywhere even jobs that say a levels only didn't call back then finally I got some interviews... But then "experience". Finally 4 months later I got my first offer at a London uni doing some experiments.. I'll use this as a chance to get that famous "experience" token

Completely understand where you're coming from, I'm going through the same thing now, still trying to land my first legal job, It's so frustrating but I guess all I can do is remain hopeful. Glad to see you found another career path, this is something I probably need to look into a bit more if law doesn't work out

yeah seems like it’s a common struggle. landing the first one is always the hardest so if you’re still early on in your search, definitely keep going! but as you said keep your mind open to other career paths if it comes to it

Email the graduate recruitment departments, most don’t have a level requirements, it’s ur personal statement and watson glazer and 2.1 at uni that really matters, in ur statement include relevant work experience and make the whole statement and ur skills tailored to the firm u are applying too. A high watson glazer result instantly puts u into the next round of the process.

What area of law were your training contract applications and paralegal applications after the lpc was it commercial lawn firms ?
@rosaverse
@rosaverse 4 жыл бұрын
hey love, yes I applied to mainly commercial firms for vac schemes / TCs and had no luck at all. I applied to one high street firm and actually got an interview so I’d definitely advise anyone in a similar predicament to me to try that - they’re much more flexible.

The way I managed it was (i) my parents paid for elocution lessons - I know this sounds silly but how you speak really really does matter so worth parents paying for that (ii) managed to get the best A levels in the school and top of year at university (iii) applied in time whilst an under graduate and applied again and again and again and again 139 firms, 25 interviews and that was it. Not easy but glad I managed it.

Hmm interesting perspective. Personally, I’m proud that I sound like someone who grew up in South London so wouldn’t have lessons to change my accent. If they don’t want to hire me because of how I talk then so be it 🤷🏾‍♀️ Great perseverance though, glad it worked out for you!

Determination! If you don't mind me asking, how many offers did you get after the 25 interviews? It seems like it could be a numbers game.
everything I did to get a DISTINCTION on the LPC (81% average!)
