I appreciate the effort, quite valuable. We bought a used seadoo challenger 2000, great shape, just to see if jet boats were our thing. If this season works out, I've been looking. I'm a huge Bombardier (Rotax) fan (skidoos, maverick, seadoo, modified pontoon running an E-Tec 250) understanding my little Challenger is a Mercruiser. The main question, which you addressed, was the supercharged or not and frankly whether the Scarab was going to hold together. We'll watch with interest over this season, provided you keep posting videos. We thank you again....

My father had one of the first designs in NZ. After the old shaft drive boat we had, this new jet thingy was so SMOOTH, with powerful hole shots. And she could reverse turn on a dime. Loved that old boat.

I don’t have a Chapperal dealer near me anymore. And I haven’t seen any on the water yet. They make nice boats so I’m sure the quality is probably a little better than Scarabs. But the drivetrains they use are exactly the same. Brp. If you have a dealer near you I would check them out. The other thing is when I was looking at my old prop boat I went to a chaparral dealership and looked at them and then I went back the next week and the dealership was closed so it Kinda scared me off a little bit. Thanks for the nice comments! 😁👍

Hey buddy need suggestions regarding the scarab 285 i have just sold my yamaha 2020 242se and planning to buy Scarab 285id but somebody told me not to buy Scarab
@jetboatjohn81713 жыл бұрын
Shahzad Mianoor I don't like to tell people what they should or shouldn’t buy, that's something you have to decide for yourself. If it feels right then do it and don't look back! It’s definitely a nice boat! There are a lot of boats for that kind of money that don’t have engines from a Sea doo in them. not that that’s a bad thing! Where are you planning on using it? How many people do you usually take? Do you plan on using it in salt water? These are all things I would need to know before I would even recommend a boat! but if thats the boat you want you shouldn't let someone talk you out of it. I wanted a Scarab because of how I was going to use it, I've owned Rotax engines for some years now.so it made sense for me but it may not make sense for everyone.

Yes he did. It's the one in my channel art on my home page. They do like it..they have the 600 hp engines. They keep there boat in Bakersfield, Ca so I haven’t had a chance to ride on it yet. But I know they want to bring it to Havasu so hopefully soon I’ll get a chance to put it in a video. Just about everything I don’t like about my 215 they have fixed in the 255.

What size engines did you get? Still got the Scarab? Any issues with it? Still enjoying it just as much?
@jetboatjohn81712 жыл бұрын
I have the twin 150 hp engines. Yes we still have the Scarab. I also have a 2020 Sea Doo Rxp 300 that has the Rotax supercharged 300 hp. still love them both. I got the 150's because I was afraid of how reliable they were going to be and now I wish I had the 300's in the Scarab. Haven't had anything major go wrong. still my biggest complaint is the lack of dealer support in my area, but luckily I haven't needed any help yet.
@shaneburt20522 жыл бұрын
@@jetboatjohn8171 would you not be concerned with fuel consumption and increased maintenance cost with the 300’s?
@jetboatjohn81712 жыл бұрын
@@shaneburt2052 There really isn’t any difference in maintenance cost anymore The problems with the supercharged engines were fixed years ago. The 150’s are better on fuel for sure. I guess it depends on where you use your boat. Fuel is easy to get on the river I mainly use. I rarely need to refuel on a day on the water. But having twin 300’s would probably go through a tank faster than I’m used to now. But would definitely be fun! My 215 with 150’s are fast enough. I don’t really wish for more when I’m driving it. But when I’m on my Sea Doo I realize how fun it would be. Plus my boat would have be a lot more more with higher Hp engines. The new boats are coming with 170hp non surcharged engines that are putting up 200 hp numbers. So you will have that going for you if you are looking at new boats.

Thank you for the video. I'm looking at either a scarab or yamaha. I keep hearing to go with the yamahas due to problems with brp engines. Any truth to it?
@jetboatjohn81712 ай бұрын
Not really. More like the story that never stops being told. Pre 2015 had a washer that came apart but has since been fixed. The real story is Yamaha has a better service network and dealership. I do my own work so doesn’t matter to me. New Yamaha’s are nice and you will be fine. I like the better handling and higher hp engines. I have 3 Brp engines now and haven’t had any major problems. new Prices for both of them are insane.

Yamaha or Scarab... Biggest concern for JetBoat is the engine noise when cruising. I have 4.3L Mercruiser and the engine is about as loud as the splash and wind noise at 3500 RPM, 30 MPH (I never go faster than 30MPH). Is jet boat much louder than that? I like everything else about the Jet boats... I'd really like to switch, but noise is a big concern for me.
@jetboatjohn81715 жыл бұрын
JWC my last boat had a 5.0 Volvo v8. The twin jets are much louder in my Scarab. I would see if you could find a dealership with a demo boat. To see if it’s something you could live with. Or come to Laughlin I’ll give you a ride! Lol!
@user-gj5nr5zf7m4 жыл бұрын
@@jetboatjohn8171 and JWC. For your consideration. I believe in most stern drive vs jet drive comparisons, depending on RPM range, the jets may have higher sound levels as measured by a decimeter. However, one thing that many comparisons fail to mention is that that jets and stern drives naturally just sound different. Most, if not all stern drives use marinized automobile engines. They generally have a lower, throatier sound. Where jet drives are mostly smaller displacement marine engines that are designed to rev higher creating a higher pitch. Personally , I do like the lower burble of a V6 or V8 I/O at cruise but I also like the turbine-like whine of the twin MR2 engines that power my Yamaha 212SS. In the 10 plus years I have operated by boat, the noise level has not been an issue or detraction from cruising and conversing with my passengers. So in addition to other differentiating factors for I/O vs Jet including noise levels, consider the sound that you may find more appealing your ear. I agree with Jet Boat John, see if you can arrange for a test ride to see, and hear for yourself.
@jetboatjohn81714 жыл бұрын
B25 I completely agree! The jets run at a higher Rpm at cruising, but I like how they sound. At idle or no wake speed I don’t think they are too loud at all. Thanks for commenting!

The first myth is a bit miss leading. It is not that Jet boats have worse control over props, it is that with no power you cannot control most Jet boats as they have no rudder. With power a Jet boat is easy to control once you are use to it.
@jetboatjohn81714 жыл бұрын
GotAFarmYet? That’s not true anymore. Scarab’s turn without being in gear.
@gotafarmyet46914 жыл бұрын
@@jetboatjohn8171 it is still under power though the impeller is still providing neutral thrust. Turn off the motor and see how well it goes, with a rudder you can still direct the boat. Not much of a difference but that is the only draw back a Jet has... well other than changing the wear ring or impeller.

That was the wost video. I run my 20 foot jet boat in 6 inches of water all the time. If you run in a real river you could find out and you lose 15% of your hp with a jet so you get worse fuel mileage. Many jet boats slip on the water when turning because the is no lower unit in the water. Just because something is true for your boat does not mean it is true for other boats.
