a REAL freedom phone is pine-phone
@randomrandom3164 жыл бұрын
@@sharoyveduchi Yes, Pinephone most probably is much better than any Android phone in terms of being a "freedom phone". What I would like to know is whether they are still relying on a blot of Android blobs for the different components that go into Pinephone, like for example I have an Android phone for which there was an Ubuntu Touch port so I installed it on the phone, only after I had installed UT did I realize that I still was running several proprietary blobs on my phone even still. Now of course UT with some blobs is probably still better, but you get my point right, I still have IntelME on my desktop running linux so can't complain really.
@sharoyveduchi4 жыл бұрын
@@randomrandom316 yeah but honestly even if the blobs were removed, ARM itself has something similar to IntelME. I don't like the ARM platform. I want to be spied on by Russians with their Elbrus CPU (if those even have backdoors at all!) or use Baikal Electronics. Alternatively I wish phones went back to using PowerPC processors. Someone could take the fully free and open source Power9 ISA and make a trimmed down version (just put less transistors, threads, and lower the clockspeeds or soemthing like that) of the design so that it's much less power hungry so that it could be suitable for use in a phone while being compatible with existing Power9 binaries. I dislike ARM. Even x86 is better because x86 has backwards compatibility with stuff from 40 years ago especially thanks to real-mode, virtual 8086 mode, and protected mode.
@mr.squishy50244 жыл бұрын
@@randomrandom316 The difference between UT on the Pinephone and UT on an Android phone is that on the Android phone they need to keep the original kernel and driver blobs to interface with the hardware. The Pinephone was put together with hardware that has native Linux support. It's actually a modified version of Pine's ARM SBC with an industrial modem.

+1 for not using the word "smartphone" I'm actually not sure for other countries, but where I am (France), everyone is using the word "smartphone" for modern cellphones. And I find it annoying because it can't be better than a computer in the sense that it can't be more than "Turing-complete" (actually, it's not even really Turing-complete because the memory is finite). Or in other words, if a computer can emulate a modern cellphone, then we can't say the cellphone is "smarter". The only things that can be done better or worse (other than freedom) are speed or memory, but some cellphones slower and with less memory than my computer are also called "smart"phones. . I know this wasn't the point of your video, but, "I'd just like to interject for a moment"… btw, I totally agree with everything you said here. . also, a default (and very simple) feature that I strongly dislike on my current notsosmart-phone: I can have portrait mode, auto-rotate mode, but not landscape mode (so I have to keep the phone in specific position with my hands if I need to read something in landscape mode). I sometimes need to use landscape mode on my computer too.

I think most of the problems with phones are down to the fact they're embedded systems with no need for modularity outside of the OEM's walled garden of developers. The same could be said of vehicles, specialized equipment, consoles, E readers, et cetera. The way apple is going with the M1 Arm chips is likely so that they can further obfuscate things as ARM's development cycle is extremely flexible and you can almost use whatever configuration of processors you want, which will make reverse engineering practically impossible for those who don't have the backing of a corporation, unlike the now compromised T2 chip which was Apple's first try at converting x64 to ARM, which shouldn't be confused with their separate iOS division.

Well, I run SailfishOS on my phone, not primarily for getting rid of the Google crap (it comes without google stuff by default although some of it can be hacked back in) but mainly because it has a better interface. Less buttons on screen, you navigate it by swiping from the edges. Perfect? No, but at least I can play KZbin videos in my browser in the background, download KZbin video's and also, it's a true GNU/Linux box in my pocket :D. And most Android apps that one may need and are not tied to Google Services run in a pretty good compatibility layer (Alien Dalvik). Not sure if it is available in the US by now though... EDIT: And of course, you can patch the sh** out of it, and multitasking is way better than on Android/iOS

Which phone is it? I got one of the last wileyfox swift 2, after my last ones battery died. Rooting was ok, some apps refuse to work on rooted devices. I sorta understand my banking app not wanting to run on a rooted device, but netflix ?
