Well, I think Quaker's can be challenging for a 1st time bird owner but if you can find a young but fully weaned Quaker, this is a good opportunity to raise the bird w/the family & learn. I recommend having short play times w/the bird. Too much play time can be overwhelming & tiring for him. Keep the play time down to 5-10 minutes tops at a time w/at least 1 hour of rest in between. Remember it's still a baby bird & it will become exhausted pretty quickly. I think cockatiels and parakeets are probably the best family birds & the best 1st time bird owner's. Quaker's are lots of fun, when mine would get cranky it usually meant that he was trying to tell me something. Either he didn't like what we were doing, or he's tired or hungry or all of the above. When his mood suddenly changed I just returned him to his enclosure & left him alone. I would always leave his enclosure door open when I was home to give him the choice unless he was there for a timeout due to bad behavior.

Hi Victoria, Popples was cracking me up while you were talking. He had a nut & kept teasing Yoshi w/it. They were doing this back & forth. My Eclectus & I are doing great. We really bonded quickly. I rescued him this last Father's Day. I think because he is young is the reason he bounced back so easily, he's close to being 17 months old now. He also adjusted quickly to a healthy diet. I sprout for him because he prefers it over chop veg. I sprout all of the veggie & legume seeds required for a healthy diet for the Eclectus. I also have a healthy organic pellet w/mixed organic, unsprouted seeds he likes, with a couple of different fruits plus a few almonds or pistachios for the day & he's really doing great. I weigh him every morning before he eats, he's at & is maintaining perfect weight now. He's also very sweet & gentle. He loves to play & is content just chilling on my shoulder. I resarched for a long time before I began to actively seek out the Eclectus because my lifestyle would best fit his characteristics & needs as an Eclectus. He has every true Eclectus characteristic. He's not loud, not destructive, he's very mellow, not hyperactive, he just started talking. I live alone & I'm retired now so he gets a lot of my time. Researching birds & their characteristics I think is hugely important. I don't reccomend anyone buying a bird out of impulse, that usually doesn't work out well for the bird or the owner/family.

Awe so glad all of you are doing good. You and your Eclectus are so lucky to have each other. You really put in the effort for him!!! It's so cool to hear about it. Thank you again Renee especially for all you do for your birds. You're one awesome bird mama. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

My Quaker gets along with everyone in my family. My conure bites everyone but me. If I can give anyone any advice its every single bird is different no matter what species that bird is. Period. So get the bird you want
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Haha isn't it crazy!? But yes you're so right. At the end of the day it all depends on the bird. But it does help having some general statements with the species to at least give some direction. Good luck to you and your birds!
@bitchhp29735 жыл бұрын
Although I agree with the every bird is different no matter the species....quakers are more likely to be very mouth oriented (biters) , territorial, and person specific. While Quaker tend to be quite the opposite. Yes it’ll change depending on the specific bird but it doesn’t mean that there is a general behavior they tend to follow. And the whole mindset of “get the bird you want” is part of the reason they are the most rehomes animal. Even parakeet with a 5 -10 year lifespans get rehomed 4+ times...WHICH IS INSANE! So the last thing I would advice is for someone to just go get the sun conure, African grey, or macaw that they say with no bird knowledge.

Thanks for your great video and advice! My parents had a Quaker Parrot that was given to them from a co-worker who found her abandoned in a park. They named her Baby and raised her with an African Grey Parrot named Bob, that they have had since he was a baby. Baby eventually became a very sweet bird over time, but she was always a little cantankerous and loud, but she always made everyone laugh. Her energy and personality balanced well with Bob, who was so laid back but talkative. Baby died a few years ago and is not forgotten. Bob still loves watching videos like yours with Quaker Parrots because they remind him of Baby. Take Care and please keep making and educating the public about how wonderful birds can be when understood.

I purchased a blue Quaker Parrot online from Fly Babies Aviary, she was hand fed by a very kind couple, they hand feed all of their birds and have a wide variety of them, and I am forever grateful for Linda and Alan. I got very lucky with her (her name is Sunny by the way), she was completely tame when I got her, she has never once shown any cage aggression (which I know is very surprising for a Quaker Parrot), or bitten me or a family member to cause pain. She kind of is my first pet bird, my mom and dad had a bunch of finches, lovebirds, and parakeets when my sister and I were little, but they were never my responsibility to take care of. Sunny is one of the most gentlest creatures I have ever encountered. She became mine when she was almost 3 months old, she is around 5 months now, and she has already begun to talk. She says ‘hello’, ‘ow’, and (don’t come at me for this one) ‘what the poop’. She’s just a teddy bear, right now she’s sitting on my shoulder making kissy noises as she hides in my hair, and surprisingly duck noises. I have no idea where she picked that up. I love her with all my heart, and if anyone is looking to buy a Quaker or other pet bird, I recommend checking out Fly Babies Aviary.

My quaker, Apple, was my first parrot. He is very much the opposite of Popples - he is the extrovert to my introvert. He flies to all of my friends for love (or food... mostly food), loves being the center of attention, and is also a little love-bug. He does love to make noise - talking or otherwise - and he gets jealous of my other bird (a sun parakeet, Mango). They nit-pick at each other all of the time and fight over who gets to be on which shoulder. This is the problem with having two birds. Apple, for me, was a wonderful first bird.

I have a quaker parrot and he is my first pet. He is not terrotorial at all with my husband and myself. He lets us do whatever we like with his cage and food. He has no interest in toys as he prefers to stay near us and play with us directly and chew on our clothes. Very low maintainance and calm. He would only call for us when we leave the room or at morning and that caused us waking up each day at around 7am. Theefore, we thought that if he sleeps in our bedroom as he can see us he would then not need to call for us and it worked. He would wake up each day comfortable and eat quitley :) He is unique and his personality is not a lot like other quakers as he is laid back, relatively quite with few chatters a day, and not distructive. To me, he is the joy of my life

He is out 98% of the time during the day which he is not used to. He is a lover but is also very grumpy if I do not come to him when he calls. I so want a companion bird for my GCC and believe your comments about quakers are true. Could you clone Popples. I live alone with my birds. What other species would you recommend? BooBoo is completely bonded to me meaning I can’t go to the bathroom without her calling or “screaming “ for me. Help I want her to be content with out me in her sight at all times. Always, thank you 🙏
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Haha I'd love to clone Popples Bendetta!!! I think Quakers are near a perfect match for gccs not just because I've had an awesome experience. Especially since majority of the time Quakers are more mellow than gccs. So they don't get each other wired up like you would have if it was two gccs together. But with that being said, I would recommend another species of conure as a companion. I absolutely adore dusky conures and they tend to be a little more mellow and quiet of the conures. I've seen green cheeks and a lovebird do well together but lovebirds are generally a little feisty sometimes so I'd be leery and try to make sure both personalities match well. Suns and jendays would do well too but of course they are louder. So you'd possibly have them competing with the noise levels lol booboo loves you thats for sure haha! Hope you find the right companion and thank you Bendetta!!! Let me know which birdy you end up choosing!!!

I'm a complete introvert with social anxiety. I live by myself and stay away from people I hate socialising and have no interest in spending time with people. I'm a huge animal lover but recently moved into a house where landlord doesn't allow cats or dogs though he's fine with birds or small caged pets. I work from home selling on line and never leave house and want a pet thats intelligent and trainable and gets very attached and affectionate I've been thinking about a quaker parrot for a while the one person thing is fine because no one else is in the house but me and I never go out so have full time to commit to a quaker. My only worry is I've heard they are so loud and I'm worried about complaints from neighbours.

Your comment is so just like my life so much that I could have written it myself lol let's be new parrot parent friends ❤ I have severe anxiety and hardly leave my house my business is online so I work from home (I'm an herbalist practitioner and make my own herbal medicine I'm also a RN/BSN so I combine my western medicine knowledge with my eastern medicine practice) I'm ordering a Quaker in 3 days I'm excited but after watching 6 videos saying how terrible it is to get one as your first bird I'm honestly nervous but committed and I'm sure I'll work through whatever comes our way.

What do you think about a Peach fronted conure as a starter bird?
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
I think it's a great idea! They remind me a lot of gccs. Typically quiet natured but they do have the potential to be loud with the loud shreiks. Playful and goofy but can also be quite ornery. I think whoever is willing to work with their dennis the menace type of demeanor they will be a great companion 😊 I've noticed at least for my area at least... They are kind of hard to find. Have you noticed this where you are?

@@VictoriaRyann I've been trying to look around my area.There is a couple of shops near by which i am thinking of going to but I think buying online from some where else in the country is not an option i am a firm believer in the bird picking the person.

My Angel Quaker parrot is already 16 years old and your video exactly describes Angel if their behavior of everything. I only know having a boy isn't my thing but we only found out after the 9 years that it was a boy. I had a girl before Angel and it was ever so friendly and nice. So I agree to everything you said about Quakers and yes it can be challenging at times. Angel sometimes has a hard time flying because of his liver issue disease but will walk and find me around the house if I disappear from his sight. So he has ladders to his cages to climb down and walk up to me. So I have to constantly watch out where he is on the floor when he does this. And yes there are times he is so loving and when I am very depressed will comfort me.
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow 16?! Happy 16 yrs to Angel 😊 is that him as your KZbin pic thingy? He's a cutie. It's so interesting how they pick up on things like that and how they can tell we are depressed. They are a lot of work and can definitely be overwhelming at times but like you said, they can be so friendly and loving. Thank you for sharing your experience with Quakers I really think it will help someone! Hope Angels liver issues pass and he gets through it. Thank you again John 😊

Angel and I can talk to each other with his noises chirps he tells me he wants a drink of my water, when he wants to take a bath (he goes crazy flying around and bugging me) when he wants to go to bed and also if I am to late in giving him medicine, he reminds something is wrong I am late. So we learn to talk each other language. It is amazing. He feels like a 5 year old to me. I have the best Hospital here and 2 doctors that take care of his liver disease and being Angel is a stubborn little boy always pulls through another year and another year. He doesn't want to leave me and survive surgery on his shoulder to which we thought was cancer but wasn't, it some sort of puss and bandage his wing for like 8 weeks so I was his UBER driver until he learn to fly 2 weeks after the bandage remove. The medicine helps him as much as it can because it won't fix it but like I said Angel has a very strong soul and so stubborn he doesn't want to leave this world. Yes that is Angel on KZbin. We have our ups and downs but I will do anything in my power to keep him happy and healthy. Oh, I am also his mate he chose me after I retired in 2012 24/7 wants to be near me. You are a very good resource of information for birds so keep them coming. Cynthia M.

Johnmunch is just my screen name to use, no apologizes needed. Yes sometimes he is a Angel when he wants to be and I would fight to keep him happy and healthy best that I can with the doctors' help. They always pull him through the difficult times when he has them. And Angel is certainly a trooper!! I will keep you posted, thank you! And thank you again for your information provided. I do understand people compulsion to want a bird though they really need to understand what it takes to care for their little guys, they are so intelligent in their own ways and I really feel so sorry for the ones for the birds who punish themselves with pulling feathers out and such because suddenly nobody loves them. It pains my heart so very much people do that to them. I cry. Even though Angel will punish me here and there I know it is his way of saying I have feelings too don't leave me alone and don't punish me because I just want to love you back. I will always love, cherish him like I have all my birds who pass over the Rainbow Bridge and hopefully I will be reunited with all my little children once again and we will all be so happy!!

Yes, quakers can be very finicky birds...if they are not socialised properly. They have massive personalities and their own opinions about things, for example the quaker that I adopted from a young family who didn't know what they were getting themselves into now absolutely loves teenagers and adults, but hates kids. He is the sweetest, gentlest parrot in the world but as soon as a child gets near him he transforms into a small turquoise velociraptor and it's the only time he has EVER bitten with the intent to hurt/defend himself. I'm 100% sure that the reason why this happens is because his previous 12/13 year old owners knew nothing about bird body language and did not respect his physical boundaries, plus they were very nervous around him and apparently dropped him a lot or pulled their hands away when he was about to step up. (cue hatred and distrust in children) So generally, yes, I agree that quakers are not 'beginner birds'. However, I also don't think that ANY birds are 'beginner birds'. The reality is you have to do research and get experience to be at least somewhat comfortable around birds before you can expect to raise and train one of your own, no matter what species it is. You need to know basic body language in order to properly communicate with your bird, and also have the maturity to respect any signals your bird is giving you when it needs some space. The bird is never the problem, it's the humans that have the ability to build up or ruin a bird.
