BIRB SQUAD!! Today we are going to talk on how I deal with an aggressive territorial quaker parrot. Many of you have asked me on how I handle my parrot's aggressive and territorial behaviors. This is not me trying too tell you this is the only way to work with your parrot. There are many different techniques and ways of going about it. I just wanted to share what has worked with Popples and I in hopes to give you all some ideas as well.
The important thing to know is all birds are different and what works for my parrots may not work for yours. Please take into consideration what works for mine, other bird owners, and your own research to determine ways to work with your parrots.
I MISSED YOU ALL SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH!!!! I've got some exciting content coming up in 2019 heck yessssss.
Love ya birbs

If your bird attacks a family member, never laugh at it. A bird, while playing with you, will associate your happy noises with fun/correct behavior. Laughing at a bird attacking (no matter how ridiculous it might be) reinforces that behavior. Always treat this problem sternly, and always have the cage at a lower/chest level than everyone in the family. Even the 'hated' person should be taller than the bird at all times.

Hey, not sure if anyone is going to see this but a few days ago i got a 2 year old quaker parrot i adopted her she is territorial of her cage wont let me touch her food and when i take her out i have to take her out with a towel or cloth. when she was out she bit me in the face i didnt yell at her or anything and she just bites me out of no where does anyone have anything that could help me so i can love and cuddle my bird.

@@lexilorenz5246 Your very first mistake w/ that bird in particular (one that you just recently got that hasn't even had time to adjust to you OR it's new surroundings, much less that you've actually had time to earn it's trust well yet??).... is that there is *never* any need to "take it out of it's cage" in the first place. Let the bird learn to come out of it's cage (it's one safe place where it feels secure) *ITSELF* ... when *it* ... is actually ready to and feels safe enough to! And it will also learn to go back IN it's cage all on it's own when it's ready to/wants to better this way, too. Every time you reach in to TAKE it out when *you* want it out??...you're only setting yourself back 10 paces in earning that bird's trust and it only serves to BREAK any trust that bird will ever have in you. Why?...because the bird only sees you as a PREDATOR and scary af trying to remove it from where it already feels safe and wants to be atm, especially with your hands coming at it like that-CLAWS (covered or not)- on a regular basis. In addition to the fact that most birds are territorial af of their cages and will become aggressive af in order to protect it at all times, especially from someone that it doesn't even know well at all yet..much less TRUST yet.

This your best video yet, in my opinion! I also have a blue quaker who is nine months old. She has so many of the same tendencies as Popples. She loves me attacks my husband she’s a little territorial depends on the moment LOL. A lot of what you said is so true. I especially liked that you don’t try to force a bird to do anything but you try to work around it or with it. Great job!! My husband doesn’t care about my bird Cooley, loves her but does not need a close relationship, so we live with that he can feed her treats and take care of her food and water but other than that she does not want him anywhere around her cage and will attack if she’s out and about. That being said, she came to me with her wings clipped and I have not quite decided what to do when they grow out. Keep up the good work Victoria! 😍😍😍
@VictoriaRyann
@VictoriaRyann 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you that really means a lot :) I love the name Cooley haven't heard anyone use that one yet! Your situation with your husband sounds a lot like mine. You'll have to keep me updated on whether you decide to keep Cooley's wings trimmed or not and how it goes. I'm hoping once Popples is able to fly again that he doesn't dive bomb to attack my husband. So I'm really trying to get the aggression completely controlled so that won't be an issue 😬

Julie Corrall That was my opinion, to most likely keep my Quakers wings clipped. I live in an area that has a lot of raptors including bald eagles, Golden’s, owls and over a dozen different types of hawks. If my bird were to somehow get out of my house, she unfortunately wouldn’t last long. I’m erring on the side of safety.
@juliecorrall6827
@juliecorrall6827 5 жыл бұрын
dasheast1 yeah thats fine , I understand that I have a similar problem my area plenty of flying raptors , but, that’s out side I have taken precautions to not allow mine to escape too easily. I suppose they could if they tried hard enough. But I’ve taken my responsibilities has a parrot keeper to prevent it happening. Once I had to have one of my quakers wings clipped because his flight was really bad , but he continued to try flying and crashed to the floor that many time he smashed his rib cage and chest bones which I had to let him go “vets advise” and ever since then I worry about and bird being clipped. I just wanted to have a say on open media. No disrespect to you. Hope you make the right discussion for your bird. Regards Jc

I know I am waaaay late but I was googling and came upon this video. My quaker Paulie has been with me since end of Sept (now nov) he was doing great , just nibbling he knew if he’d stop biting he’d get a treat. I cleaned his cage because it was poopy. Now he hates me being around his cage. If he’s anywhere else other then his cage he’s ok. He doesn’t let me do nothing now like I use to. I am only allowed to give him treats when he stops biting which is now out of control. I’ll give him taste of fruits, snacks etc and he’ll be fine. Soon as that’s gone, biting is back. Please help, I’ve tried to make his cage just as before I cleaned it and no change.

Good advice my GCC is going hormonal now. You have described her perfectly. My problem, not my parrot, is when she nips my neck while she’s on my shoulder. I loose my patience. (My voice only) I don’t have perches in every room, I’ll try that. I do use time out when she is in attack mode, I believe she doesn’t even know it’s me. She just lunges and bites. Don’t take me wrong, like first thing in the morning it’s all love and head scratches. Thanks from BooBoo and her human.

Hi, I really appreciate all your knowledge and am watching your videos to learn all I can because I want to get a parrot down the road. I do have a question for you. I’ve been thinking about a green cheek for awhile and went to local bird shop recently… really knowledgeable owners who absolutely love birds and have been doing this for decades. Anyway, I was able to hold a 6-month old green cheek and it immediately started biting my arm. The guy said I handled it the way I was supposed to because I didn’t react, but he continued to bite until he was put back in the cage, it even broke my skin. Now I’ve heard they’re nippy, but is this normal? Now I’m a little afraid to get one. Any thoughts?

Poppies look-alike on the other hand is very rough and quick to bite if you go near him, however, my daughter and I can pet him at times. When I was a kid I had female parrot named paulina. She was such a nice parrot to live with she loved everyone but she didn't like my little brother. My brother scared her and broke her wing she hated him for it. She didn't like it when i left my room she was scared. I camed up with a plan. I let her listen to nature sounds. She loved it so much that danced and chirped. And loved to play with me she move her toys on the floor and picked it up she did it every time. I loved her so much I glad I saved her that place where she was. Those people where so mean to her. 9 years ago she died of old age

He has started just instantly biting me when I take him out if his cage, he hasn't broken skin but definitely left marks. His feathers get really fluffed up when he does this though. You’ve helped me bond really well with my lovely Lutino Quaker names Mari, and things are running pretty smoothly. :) I realized you mentioned that Quakers get very lonely, and I should take them around the house with me, but I have a slight issue with that... I have other animals (Dogs and cats) that will most likely attack her and hurt her pretty badly. I do my best to bring Mari out of my room, downstairs, and around my house while the animals are closed in other rooms as much as possible, but it’s becoming a hassle, and it could easily go downhill if an animal is accidentally let loose while I’m downstairs with my bird. Do you have any suggestions? Please let me know! :D

I have that problem as well. Have you seen those clear bird backpacks? They look like the clear cat carriers/backpacks but for birds. Sometimes I’ll put my parrot in that and set it on the counter while I’m in the kitchen. She’s there and can see me, but the cats can’t get to her.

Question: tonight my Quaker hissed at me & lunged at me when I was putting him in his “nighttime cage” & I didn’t even DO ANYTHING! I’ll admit: sometimes it’s hard for me to just let him get his way…so I made him step up on the perch and then my arm; while speaking firmly: to show him that I’m not afraid of him! Any recommendations on how I should treat that situation? (We had an awesome day together…& it just kinda upsets me when we have a moment that feels like we were both “going south.”☹️) That’s the other thing = there’s nothing worse than when we have a wonderful day together, he listens well, we have a great trick training… And then all of a sudden at the end of the day = he decides to be in “ass“ to me 😔. Any recommendations are appreciated!! TY

I have had three parakeets they were so sweet and were really easy and happy but they died due to me not researching how household items were toxic to birds like nonstick pans. Now, I think I'm ready for a new bird, especially a quaker parrot but I'm afraid I won't be able to deal with its cage aggression and my mom wouldn't like the bird. I am also at my father hows on Tuesday and Thursday nights and I wonder if the bird could learn to handle not being with me on those nights but with my mom

This is a wonderful video! It was overall very helpful, but I'd just like to add that there being any kind of "alpha" bird is a myth. There is not leader to a flock. They will follow a certain bird sometimes, yes, but this is usually because said bird thought there was danger, alerted its' flock, and flew off a few seconds before them.

Hi Victoria! Ok, I’ve been watching your videos. My GCC is now 2 1/2 yrs old. He was 2 mos when I got him. I trained him to do tricks, he would ride on my shoulder. He was good! Over time he started to bite. When he did, I’d put him back on his cage. After 5 min, I’d bring him back to my shoulder. Anyway, over time he’s gotten worse! I’m now afraid of him. I’ve reacted a few times and flung him off my shoulder because he bit my ear or neck so hard, it surprised me and it hurt! 😢 If I tried to stop him, he’d come back... full on attack!!! I had no choice but to hurry and fling him off!! I NOW know I never should do that, I know better now, I could hurt him! Now I wrap him up in a hand towel and stroke him and scratch his head, and he just attacks the towel instead of my finger. When he attacks the towel, I hold his beak and say, no! At first he fought me and tried to wrestle himself free. He has now given in. He’s better. Eventually i don’t want to use the towel, but use my hand to hold him. I don’t know if I’m doing good, or just making it worse. I want him to pal around the house with me. I want to wrap my hand around him, hug him, hold him upside down like a baby, like I used to. The handshakes that I trained him to do is now about attacking my finger. 😫 Please help!!

Hello! So recently my friend gave me their bird because his little, 3 year old brother is allergic to him. He is a cockatiel names Snowe Flake ( A 7 year old named him and yes that is how its spelled). He is not social and is very cage territorial. He is loud (but I don't really mind it) he doesn't like toys at all because he was not raised with them and he is now 10 years old. I am his 3rd home, his first home mad-handled him a lot as a baby and his second home (my friends home) neglected him. They didn't clip his wings (which is OK, I let him fly around the house). He likes being around people and enjoys noise. They worst part (I think) is that he is trying to mate with our dog and he is hormonal and sexually frustrated and bites a lot. He does enjoy treats but Im not sure how to 'punish' him for doing something bad cause he enjoys out his cage and inside his cage. Snowe Flake is very similar to your Quaker bird so I was hoping for some advice cause he will bite my fingers but is OK with going on my arm whether is covered or not and he will eat treats from my hand as long as its not in my palm. Are you able to help me?

So many questions victoriaryann, my green Quaker parrot mozart is quite tame he will fly to me he will fly on my arm on my family members arms and shoulders lets us give him treats and sits with us hes took to me better, but he can be a bit snappy am scared to try attmpt to touch him i don't want to push the boundaries just yet as ive only had him for about 8 weeks and in my opinion hes come so far in such a short time i mean he takes treats and does all what i said above so doing pretty well, his last owner said she had him over 3years and didn't get along with her son but he's been perfectly fine with my son's, so i just would like a few tips on getting to be able to be closer by this i mean at least dare to turn my face his way when he is on my shoulder or a little stroke to the head just abit more contact between us, also his pin feathers are driving him nuts and i would love to be able to help him with the discomfort how do i get him to trust me with these things please help 🙏

I've had this rescued female quaker for about 10 months . I waited a couple months before trying to be friends. she was good out of the cage, snuggling. then for a couple months I didn't let her out because of the dog we had. then spring came and she was laying eggs and wouldn't come out of the cage and very aggressive. I think the egg laying is done and she's been coming out of the cage but she attacks my hand, or if she's on my lap and I talk to her, she runs up and bites my face. If I sit on my rocking chair, she won't come by me. If I offer my arm with a long sleeve shirt, she tests it until she finds my skin then bites. right now her cage is open and she is sitting inside and I'm in my rocking chair. what can I do?

My green cheek has quite severe aggression surrounding his cage and pellets, sometimes veggies too. I used to give his pellets in a dish at the bottom of his cage but I felt like that was encouraging his aggression because he thought it was it nest. I've been mixing things up and seeing if other things work. Lately I've been putting a few pieces of pellets in my hand, opening the cage and letting him come out on his own. Which works to an extend. He will see the food, give body language that he really wants it but if I approach him he gets mad. Though if I say come to me with the pellets in my hand, he will jump to my hand but then have an instinct to bite me for a second then continue to eat. And for a while he's sort of on edge and can snap after this process which usually as soon as I take him out of his cage, he's super friendly. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, does anyone have any suggestions. I feel like even though he's jumping to my hand himself, we're taking a step back somehow because he gets more aggressive.

My lovebird is VERY aggressive. We thought she was a boy for the first 5 years of her life until she laid eggs. This was around the time we got our new dog who is very energetic and crazy around her. So, our bird got VERY aggressive and mean to EVERYONE because she was scared because my dog will go up to my birds cage and sniff her and sometimes bark at her (we usually keep her away.) Now she is 7 and it’s sad to see her super aggressively to everyone, she doesn’t get out very much and i feel very very bad for her. I’m trying to help her again but she will NOT come out of her cage, she’ll bite and puff her feathers out. She also builds nests with her feathers so she has a bald spot. :( I’m going to try to help her be more comfortable but i’m not forcing anything on her, before I decide to rehome her because I don’t know if I’m giving her the right home. Every day I go near her cage, open the door, etc. To have her trust me more.

Give them treats whenever you show the perch so they think perch=treat Then try to touch their lower abdomen with the perch and hold a treat behind the perch and they probably will step up to eat the treat. I had this problem too a week ago. Now she is already standing on my hand! Good luck.

@VictoriaRyann 5 жыл бұрын
Oh cool you have a bearded dragon too! Yeah I'm like you in that sense I don't really plan on them ever being together but as you saw there are times I have them all out at the same time. Popples usually minds his own buisness and never makes a point to approach an animal and I've never had them side by side where they both noticed each other to know for sure on how he would react. Yoshi on the other hand is nosy and approaches Frylock when he sees him. Yoshi will attempt to nip at him and frylock will flare his neck. Once I noticed that I separated them and I never purposely put them side by side. But they can each have a shoulder and both are fine. Seems as long as they both have some distance with each other all is good 😊 good luck with rescuing a quaker or grey hope it all works out for you all 😊

Hey girly! Sounds really frustrating on your situation. So to make sure I am understanding correctly... Tweety bites everywhere not just the face? How old is she? Do you ever take her anywhere outside of the house and if so how does she act? Do you wear glasses or change up your 'look' often? When she bites does she make any certain noises? What does she look like and type of movements when shes goes to bite? Is it anything like the clip of Popples trying to bite me? What do you usually do/react when she bites? Sorry for all the questions just trying to get a better understanding first as to whats going on with you and your birdy :)

Hi and yes she bites everywhere that is bear skinned but she hasn't bitten my face yet I'm just scared she might she absolutely loves just being really close to my face which is weird, she is 1 1/2 years old, she has only ever been to the vet with me in a carrier and she was not a happy camper, also I did get her as a rescue bird I found out she DOESN'T LIKE BLONDES or men and she has a scar underneath her wing that stretches to her chest looks like a can scratch, also she makes no sounds before she bites she just lunges and starts gnawing, I don't scream or react I usually just calmly say no bite if that doesn't work I cover her up with a towel pick her up and put her back in her cage for like 5 minutes or so

Thank you so much. Seems all I hear see and read is the glories of your cuddly bird. I think I am not a bird person because screaming in my ear what are you doing isn’t cute. Pinching and preening is not appreciated. Having a tame loving conure fly across the room and attack you is unacceptable. Finally a video that addresses these issues and doesn’t make me feel guilty for wanting to wring my conures neck, or sell it to the highest bidder. Good job, and thank you.

Am I not allowed to comment on the frustrating parts of bird ownership. We can only gush and make believe there no negatives to bird ownership. Maybe if more honest conversations were online less people would get a bird with unreasonable expectations and then neglect or abuse the bird. Saying at times I want to ring my birds neck says nothing about how much time or patience I have. But god forbid you mention a negative. You know nothing about me or my bird or our relationship.

Carol Hartley thank you for the apology, I appreciate it. I have a blue crown conure that I got when she was three years old. She is awesome and near perfect. Even though I did research and was very thoughtful about getting her I was still ill prepared for the reality and complications of having a companion bird. I worry about the large amounts of birds neglected, abused or isolated. I think honest conversations of the negatives are important. I have days and weeks where my relationship with Pampa is perfect. Others not so much. I am learning too how to more effectively handle Pampa to minimize some of my issues. If I had it to do over I would not get a cuddly conure. Not the perfect bird for me. I am just being honest while still loving Pampa and giving Her the best home I can give her.
