Missing in a lot of these discussions is the fact that a lot of wanderlust is fueled by a person's desire to escape something in their current reality and at some point, the person realizes that being in another place is not the panacea it seems to be. This is why some of the content encouraging women to run from their present lives and move abroad is actually dangerous. It plays on that desire for escape and in many instances, sells these women a curated glimpse at a life abroad with fantasy experiences that the content creators often pay for with money earned from workshops, coaching sessions and retreats, etc. The truth is day-to-day life overseas is usually quite similar to day-to-day life in one's home country with additional challenges of language & cultural differences, etc once you've done the touristy things. Being in a new place can help if you are in need of a fresh start but it does not guarantee it - it will still be up to you to make the same changes that you needed to make back home.

It is allot cheaper to live a better life in a developing country. But you have to weigh out the safety risks and the annoyance/ stress of constantly being begged for money and having your head on a swivel. But where can you get a safe apartment in a gated 247 secured building with a pool for $250 a month in the U.S.???? Or $100 to $600 a month for a live in nanny, cleaner/ cook?

I did a lot of travel from 1999-2007 mostly South African. I’m a Brit, Londoner. I then fell in love with a little house in a quiet beach town in Mexico staying 6months UK, 6 months Mexico. I stayed nearly 4 yrs straight during the Covid era and got my residency. London is my base, Mexico is my home, India my workplace. That’s it, no more wandering for me.

I’m not as traveled as some of you ladies are, but I still feel drained from it. I am a cancer survivor and my body is still playing catch up so I really like chilling at home with people I love. I experienced the same burnout, but i realized it was mostly due to dealing with the headache of air travel (people, customs, jet lag, etc). So i dialed it way back and only travel internationally once per year. But i really love road trips now because i can take my time and enjoy the space and privacy of my own vehicle. I also love seeing the natural beauty of the states that you usually dont see on a plane. But my favorite part is checking out the small towns in between because there are a lot of hidden gems out there. The only thing i dont like is packing up lol so im really considering getting an RV so that i can keep all of my stuff with me.

Travel is exhausting and stressful. I’m a flight attendant and I try to give grace to passengers and coworkers because it can wear you out (especially if things go left). With that said, I haven’t felt homesick and much like you Adalia I was never that kid. I’m very grateful to be able to go all over the world for “free”. I can choose adventure or lay by the pool/order room service on my layovers. So I look at it like I get to take a vaycay a few times a month.

Hi Adalia, you are not alone. I've lived abroad for 13 years and though I haven't traveled nearly as much as you, it just doesn't excite me the way it used to. I haven't traveled out of the country since 2018. I had 2 trips planned for 2020, which were canceled due to COVID, then I quit my job in 2021, then started my current job in 2023, so I'm still financially recovering. Idk when I'll be able to travel again, but part of me is kind of dreading it because I'm tired of traveling solo. I don't have many friends to begin with, and I'm the only single one. It'd be nice to go somewhere with a man for once.

Gurl! That started with me in mid 50’s. It gets to be too much, the changing planes, the people… it seems like the hustle that never stops. So when you’re home it’s calming, peaceful, and you move when you get ready. I am in my 70s now, but I am planning on moving to Panama beginning of 25. I then plan to travel, but not consistently. I want ease, and up-and-down in airplanes with a whole Lotta. Stupid people won’t be that for me. Take care of yourself rest and you don’t have to say yes.

I'm travel fatigued to the nth degree. After hitting all of my 75 bucket list items on 6 continents and 50 states, I need rest. I have no desire to go anywhere. The experiences (airports, buses, trains, planes, hotels, sites, people, food, etc.) were very memorable, but time for rest now. My signs that I am tired: 1) I am starting to get lazy and forgetful when I plan trips and itineraries, 2) saying to myself "I wish I were back at home in my bed watching TV and eating a bowl of ice cream" when I'm riding in a plane, train, or bus, 3) people are more excited about my upcoming trips than I am, 4) I get more excitement over getting a great airfare price than I am over the actual trip, 5) my favorite thing to do nowadays in Vegas is go to CVS to people-watch, buy snacks, and go back to my hotel room to eat my snacks and watch TV.

Those of us who are introverts seem to become more introverted as we become older. Also during the Age of Aquarius introverts are happiest at home. However your lack of enthusiasm for travel is likely due to (a) the stress of moving (b) you’re leaving CDMX during dry season when the weather is the best.

As someone who traveled a lot from 2020 to 2022 both domestic and international, I think I am a little burnt out from traveling, not really from visiting countries, but the hassle of traveling and the amount of people I tend to encounter now that traveling has returned to normal. I miss the days of the pandemic when the planes weren't filled, tours were mostly private and inexpensive because 1 person was better than no one, and the likelihood of me running into an American was very slim. I got so used to going places and not seeing many tourists or being the only person. I miss staying at a hotel and being one of less than 5 guests. Now that travel has returned, it is overwhelming for me. I am going to keep traveling, but I am going to start to go to places that are less popular tourist destinations. I also have been feeling like I want to travel slower and stay longer in places when I go. I guess when I'm in a place that feels peaceful, I just want to enjoy it, and not rush off to the next destination.

Love your thought of living with intention. Life is so finite, willy nilly or off the cuff has never been my thing. I'm a super planner. I have been invited on a trip to Alaska, but the thought of the fifteen- hour plus travel time from where I currently am makes me so uncomfortable. And as you mentioned, the hassle, some of the people, and the costs can be prohibitive also. I like my own stuff, my own bed, and my own place. The introversion in me keeps me still often. Last year, I may have overdid it.....I bounced around from the US to Mexico, back home to TX, then out to Brazil, back home, a few days later off to Montreal...back home..then to Tokyo...then back home...took a few months off during the summer, then in September went to Spain and Turkey, back home, the next month, to Cali to drive the PCH...back home...then to Italy in December. I've been meaning to plan another exploratory trip to Mexico City this month; it's barely a two hour flight from San Antonio...but I am TIRED LOL. And content sitting in my house for the moment...which is verey "out of character" for me as well.

How blessed you are to have been able to travel at will, get it out of your system and find your own travel-home time balance. I want to not live 24/7 in the U.S. (my sanity IS at stake), travel more but still want sense of safety, comfort and community. Not interested being a nomad without roots. I want to spread out my roots a little and see what else will grow. Maybe it’s time to share your experiences in how you’re building community where you are. “Lifeing” in a foreign land. That would be enlightening and helpful since that’s really what a lot of people who move abroad also struggle with. Thanks for the wonderful travelogues and BGM inspiration. Looking forward to seeing your next you!

"The juice isn't worth the squeeze" lol! I am 37yrs old and have been travelling since 18months old, solo travelling since 17yrs old and lived abroad etc. I have often said that; airports, transportation, airline customer service, accommodation bookings etc are PURE HEADACHE. I love going around the world, exploring different cultures, learning history and languages but the actual TRAVEL part is wayyy too much hassle. 9/11 and the pandemic added to the stress and it is not necessarily worth-it, especially if you are going abroad to RELAX. When I expressed this in recent years, almost no-one agreed and now that travelling has become trendy and social media appealing, I feel that most people uploading their travel experiences make it out like it's such a breeze where the airport experiences in particular are all smooth sailing🤨I was beginning to think that I just attracted bad luck when travelling...Give me silence, warmth and serenity at home with all my favourite things and I'm good 😉

The way you explained you used to travel is very exhausting. I wouldn't be able to do that. Up to last year, i used to leave for two months traveling, or taking three trips of one month a year. Then from May 2023 to now, I felt i didn't want to go anywhere. I spent almost a year i didn't go anywhere, then last week, out of the blue, i found myself book a plane ticket to Cambodia. What? I couldn't believe i did that. I had 24 hrs to cancel the plane tichet and get a refund. I didn't cancel. So, i am going to do a tour of 7 countries in Asia. All my travels are comfort in 3 to 4 stars hotels. If i have to have a layover of 12 hours, i slways make sure i book an hotel room. I love to travrl, but i try to avoid hassle.

As much as I love to travel, I feel a little burned out as well. In 2022 I went to London and Edinburgh, and last year in 2023, I was in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. I had planned to go to Dublin and Savannah this year, but now have decided to push Dublin back to 2025. I may still get to Savannah before the end of the year, but that will/would be my only trip for pleasure this year. I agree, travel is a hassle now and next year you will need a VISA to go to Europe so that's another hoop to jump through.

I loved it and was sooo excited to get through the holidays so i could get going again. Funny though, it's the end of February, and i'on feel like it! Lol! I had to chuckle thinking about it like, dang, i just got started, I can't be burned out already. Now, i want to be home?!?🫠 Now that I've got the courage and the resources!!! I've looked at flights...accommodations and booked nothing! I did, however, redecorate my bedroom🥴 🛌 So maybe it's something in the air right now... I'm Midwest, it's winter, so maybe that's the reason.

It sounds like you are going through an identity shift, and that whatever it will be moving forward is going to be very different from what it has been. Shifts can be awkward. They can leave us with questions that take us by surprise. It's not easy to leave behind something that was so integral to our identity, and was a reliable source of pleasure.

WOW, you've been going HAM (hard as a mug - in the vernacular of my sons, lol) with the traveling. Just reading your itinerary for this year makes me exhausted. And we can all agree that air travel will just work your nerves sometimes. Can anything be canceled or postponed? Have you had a good thorough physical lately, w blood work etc? Just to be certain that's not a driver of the way you feel. Highly suggest booking a rest session with Octavia Raheem. I like that you are recognizing your feelings and honoring yourself by considering making some changes. Looking forward to hearing about your deep dive in rediscovering self and home.❤

I used to want to expat completely i.e. find a better less expensive country to live in. My goal was always early retirement and that travel. I can tell you now, now that I have settled into early retirement, all of that travel is looking less appealing to me. I took one trip to Africa and had an experience similar to you and thought... yeah this IS a hassle. And when you are abroad you don't have all of the comforts you are used to. I always thought I could learn to live without, and I have for up to a month, but I'm planning my first 3 months excursion and I'm very leery. 3 months without all of MY stuff. MY computer, and MY 25" wide screen monitor which is where I consume all my multimedia, my plants need looking after. These are small things, but they are things I am used to. Ideally, I like what someone else said, X number of months in one place and X number of months somewhere I am REALLY happy. So really my journey is looking for that second place. But I don't know. I agree with you. Above all we are allowed to change our minds. I've already traveled a LOT, and I've always loved it, I've been looking forward to travelling in retirement. Now that I'm here... hmnnnn......

Though I think you're a bit burned out (understandably!)? I appreciate what you're exploring here. The best part of having a home you enjoy is that you actually want to be in it. A LOT. It is a source of immense pleasure. When you return from the next set of trips and get a breather? You'll curate more carefully. Travel for travel's sake is not the move if you are good 'n' grown. #NewRules

The destination is the goal, having to travel and all that is included in that in lies the problem, plus we can never ever pack enough of anything for the place we travel to, to be like home. If one finds satisfaction in living a few months in one place and some months in another in my opinion it may be good or fine today ( if so please enjoy it) but I think even that will get old. Singers, actors, musicians, public speakers, and athletes all travel the whole wide world, but I hear them say, "I can't wait to get back home." It's the travel that makes you tired , frustrated and drained, not the destination.
