💯 agree with you on the S&S cam plate. Mine failed with the brass bushing for the cam, causing massive play which damaged the cam ,lifters and almost destroyed the engine if I left it go any longer. Lucky for the boys at APE 🦍 that found the issue and sorted it all out. Now recently I replaced my stock gear with the Screamin Eagle plate and pump. Wow great bit of kit 👌🏻😎
@MasterTechMiller3 ай бұрын
Lucky it was found before too much damage occurred. S&S do make some great products don't get wrong, it's just the M8 oil pump & cam plate they don't do well.

Always good to see these informative videos mate I do agree with your opinion on plates, I have always liked the screamin eagle pump and plate combos for both m8 and twin cam platforms, SE preferred then feuling, runout tolerances are a bit more forgiving, the bushings are secured with splines rather than a press fit and I am yet to see one fail. In the later m8's that have the updated 8 lobe scavenge gerotor setup I have seen no issues with the stock cam plate and pump combo and do a good job. on the earlier twin cams with spring tensioners I find both feuling and screamin eagle cam plate conversion kits are competitively priced which is nice if one is unavailable due to being on backorder.

@DansGarageAndPerformance 💯 mate! Spot on! I think because the aftermarket are quick to come out with an update people are drawn to it more easier 🤔 When SE come out with an option it's like the customer base rejects it for some reason?

I didn’t know that the max crank runout for the Screaming Eagle cam plate / oil pum is 12 thousands. One of the reasons I didn’t install any billet cam plate and oil pump yet is that I’m afraid of my stock flywheel start developing some runout above the max tolerance required by Feuling and S&S which is 5 thousands. I thought it was the same for the screaming eagle combo. Thanks for the info.

Matt at those dyno guys has been saying for years to just use the Harley stuff unless you true the bottom end. If I were to upgrade my sportster to something with an M8, I would just stick with whatever recommendation that he uses. I know he works a lot with you guys and has a great relationship. I have learned a lot from watching your videos and Matt's videos on facebook.

what's your thoughts on the Zippers Performance cam plate? it seems pretty similar to the Screamin' Eagle cam plate.

I got that SE setup going in my 124. The post 2020oem isn’t keeping up on the scavenging crank case pressure on my bike. Zero oil burning. Lots of crank case pressure tho. No sumping. Hoping won’t need new pistons of jugs Ohh ! Monday bike goes in for SS crank , changing to 480MT cam. And moving to 64mm TB/Intake The 482 setup is cool. Accelerates violently fast after 4k. But I ride 3-5k range .. rarely go past there so I’m not even using the horsepower whych don’t come into play til 5250 anyway *I asked about the compression ratio since 482 needs much compression to work. I asked how they bumped the compression and said they just ran the 11:1 SS 124 kit as is no thinner gaskets .. it runs well. Idk how tf it even working at 11:1

@MasterTechMiller2 ай бұрын
Hey mate. Some will argue the earlier models around 2000 to 2004 are the best as the featured brass bushings on the connecting rods & had timken bearings in the bottom. They had a shitty cam chest design with the spring loaded tensioners. That's easily upgraded either by the SE camplate/oil pump combo or any other aftermarket option. I like the last of them. Basically anything from 2012 onwards in the 103ci range. The 110ci engines in the S models have some issues with killing lifters due to huge dual valve springs in the heads.

@MasterTechMiller3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching & leaving a comment/question. So as far as I know at this stage, Screamin Eagle are the only ones that offer any tuning capabilities to the OEM ECM. The adjustments & capabilities are very limited with that tuning device/software. There is an Aftermarket ECM option (Impact Wiring Solutions) that have a replacement stand alone ECM that offers FULL tuning capabilities. At the time of writing this comment, I am due to fit one of these ECMs in a 2024 RoadGlide with a CR483 Camshaft in the morning at work. I am doing a full video on the install process along with the tuning process. As for what cam is best,....that comes down to how you ride & what result you would like from the bike

And Reinhard big sucker air breather ..watching your video made me question about going with the SNS chest plate and oil pump Now I’m considering the screaming eagle. made a lot of sense about ,what you were saying about the brass fitting and tolerance for the run out. My style riding is I like taking off first gear full throttle through third gear. Do a lot of highway riding and I like to pull away from the pack, and get away from other vehicles. like I said, I was considering the 475 c.. now I’m also considering the Star 30/30 .. What to do

Is there any proof that a splined bushing is better. I’m wondering how they maintain concentricity during mfg process. I think the solid press fit bearing is better. Never seen a splined one on any automotive cranks in my lifetime even in race cars. There’s not much torque between the shaft and bearing with proper lube pressure.
@MasterTechMiller3 ай бұрын
It is my opinion that the splined bush offers 1 extra level of security over the press fit bush as it cannot spin or turn in the plate. Now, while this is rare, it does happen & there have been numerous reports of this happening. Of course there are issues with the Harley flywheel when excessive run out happens that can cause the bush to catch which is no fault of the cam plate design because if a welded a trued flywheel was used, this wouldn't be a concern. While 95% of my customers want 'hot street' engines, the SE cam plate combo offers the best value for money & security over the aftermarket options not only because of the spline on the bush, secondly the Factory Warranty from Harley-Davidson & the 12month over the counter warranty is there. Thirdly it handles more run out than the other brands which is a plus as it's known Harley flywheels twist. I agree with you on much of what you said, but when it comes down to the safest most cost effective option for my customers I truly believe the SE Plate & pump combo to be the answer

My buddy has a 2024 Low Rider ST he’s wondering what cam would be best currently he has Vance and Hines slip ons with a tune for them which cam would you recommend the cr483 or cr485? And will the stock oil plate be fine with those and stock valve springs?
@MasterTechMiller2 ай бұрын
The stock cam plate, oil pump & valve springs will be absolutely fine with that setup. I'd go the CR483 with that setup. It will provide an awesome increase in the mid range & still provide a healthy top HP boost.

I heard SE has revised the plate to have more efficient flow. Do you have any insider information?
@MasterTechMiller3 ай бұрын
The OEM cam plate has received a small change yes. The area on the Camshaft plain bearing has had a larger groove machined into it to allow for more volume. This update happened with the introduction of the VVT M8 & has since become standard fitment on all MY23 bikes

Asking for your opinion: I recently purchased a 2005 Softail Deluxe with 12K miles on it. I want to change out the cam chain tensioners due to the stock ones failing. I am thinking of going with hydraulic ones, upgraded cam plate and oil pump. Also am kicking it around with going with new cams to give it some more get up and go. I don't want this bike to be for racing as this is my putt around bike but thinking that while we are in there to just do it all up. Not sure what cam I should put in it.. any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, would I need push rods etc as this bike only has 12 K on it?
@MasterTechMillerАй бұрын
A set of Screamin Eagle 204 Cams will be absolutely perfect for what you want. It will bring it to life exactly where you want it (down to low) and it will have a great sound too. Screamin Eagle offers the Cam plate, oil pump & tensioners as a kit that is designed to bolt in to the early model Twincams bringing the cam chest up to date. You will need adjustable pushrods when you do this job to save the hassle of taking off the rocker boxes & removing the rocket gear. Because the bike has only done 12k there is no need to replace or inspect anything inside the rocker boxes. Using adjustable pushrods allows you leave all that alone and get the cam chest updated with minimal engine disruption
