Kevin, I've been watching your videos for quite some time. Hands down, you are the most articulate motorcycle guru I've found on the inter-webs. Many thanks for taking time to create videos for those of us who enjoy getting our hands dirty!

He, thats the same color and logo as my cam plate. 🙂👍 Perfect timing. My cams are pressed in and if I remember correctly my shim spaces the chain sprocket. Not sure but I do remember a spacer in there somewhere. I am about to refresh the top end and install a new Red Shift cam in my old heritage now that the garage has thawed out. I just need to assemble the necessary base and head gaskets, tear down and reaasemble. Then install the new fuel pump and related in tank paraphernalia. Tune and ride her wheels off. Its been since Christmas 22 since she ran given I used to live in Phoenix and it got too hot to ride really early. Then moved here in August during the extreme heat, and then it quickly got too cold for this desert rat to ride here in Iowa. So, I went from one non riding season right into another non riding season. Bad timing on my part but happy wife, happy life. You know how it is. But now the old girl is about to be resurrected and ridden some. Bike, not wife 😅. Lots of new back roads to explore. I still want to send her to you for a rebuild. Maybe I should call you for the gaskets and a new drive belt. She isnt close to stock so cant just order parts for a '05 Heritage. Those parts are too small. 😊 Be safe Kevin. Later, Ron. PS, I just realized my card didn't update for you. I just forced it. Damn U Tube, thanks for the notification google. Not. Ugg. 😮

I’m no mechanic, but with you mentioning the tolerance of before 07 as opposed to 07 and later. The later ones seem to have more redundancy built into the cam plate re the 120 thou compared to the 110 thou washer you put in. I own a Sport Glide, but I think that it doesn’t need that setup ( or you can prove me wrong ). Anyway I’m a newish subscriber and I do enjoy you vids as even I can understand what your saying all the way to Australia.

Awesome thanks. As a clockmaker who has recently gone from a 1340 to a '99 tc88 with 25k miles on I'm on the lookout for the best information. Your channel is now top of the list. Had a quick look at the spring tensioners to make sure it's good for a few months shakedown before the winter project. Don't know what cams are in there but the spring tensioners are not staying.

I hope you have time to respond or perhaps see this question Kevin I do have a question if I may? I have been re reviewing some of the videos you have dune about 3years back about the crack case run out on the twin cams and in this series you was talking about the 2007 an 2008s problems with this problem I got to say it got me thinking I have seen your videos on how to read a spark plug an how they can tell them a lot about what’s going on inside I an in this series you talk about how is motor cycle only had around 20,000 miles on it an how this problem was fixed before it got a lot worse. I have a 2017 heritage classic with the 103ho with 17,000 miles on it and it me to wondering at what age or what mileage would you recommend that one pulls these plugs just to see if we can tell if run out/dumping is an issue?

Is interesting. Makes me think of flat tappets in a typical flat tappet engine....lobes and lifters aren't perfectly square to each other. Otherwise, the lifters wouldn't spin...and wear out quickly since the same spots are hitting every time. That's well known. Are the flat-tappet lobes biased all in the same direction such that the cam is always pushed in one direction? I sorta doubt that but don't know for sure. It is probably a good thing that a roller cam can change position even if just slightly to keep the same surfaces from encountering each other endlessly. I'd think that would maximize lifetime just like axle gear ratios are never even numbers...a hunting gear set where the same teeth mesh the least as possible. However, the roller to cam surface ratios likely makes this irrelevant unless they are 1st order harmonic Plus, slip is likely anyway.. Probably I am overthinking this but maybe not. Too tight is never right though.

My 99 king had frosting on a 25,000 mile (40,000km) bike from new. What would have caused that ?? I did replace all cams lifters chains springs and bearings with S&S cam and good lifters and quality bearings Though Thanks. All good tutorials,,

With all due respect that isn't how that works . Rear cam thrust washer ( variable thicknesses) goes up to the cam journal end . Is used to set sprocket alignment to the crank sprocket. The distance from flange to end of the journal and the width of the plate determines end play. Front cam has a .100" washer held by a bowed snap ring to keep the washer tight to the end of the cam journal ... end play determined by cam journal and cam plate dimensions also

Incredibly informative videos.. i have a 06 Fatboy CVO (Red).. As you know it comes fully chromed , injected, and with the screaming eagle 2 kit.. should I upgrade the cam and pump kit? Also what do you recommend for the first start up of the season? Unfortunately we Canadians have to hibernate for 6 months and sleep with our bikes.. I believe all the oil drains back into the case... Cheers
@Sam590ss7 ай бұрын
Being from Michigan I can fully relate to the woes of hibernation 😂. From what I have learned from the infinite wisdom of Kevin, I'd say upgrade if you can. The stock cast cam support plates are weak, and the oil pumps leave a lot to be desired. Especially at idle. However you should have hydraulic cam chain tensioners, so that is a plus compared to the mechanical spring ones my 2000 had.
