I go to a totally different school, HOWEVER, thank you for talking about this!! Like you said, there’s so much toxic positivity surrounding college and how it’s SUPPOSED to be so when it doesn’t turn out to be that way it’s so disappointing. I’m a freshman at a college in upstate NY and I applied to transfer in February. I felt really shitty because everyone else seemed to be so happy and I definitely wasn’t (based on Instagram at least because I’ve been home). But I hated feeling guilty for wanting to transfer but I’m glad I applied to transfer. Also, I never felt like I fit in at my school from the get go, nobody was ever friendly and my school seems wicked cliquey and I hate it.

Not sure how I came across this since I'm a double dawg lol but your title had me curious so I watched. I related to you on a lot of levels actually. I've personally had a good experience at UGA but sooo many of your points are valid. Totally agree with your points about greek life -- wasn't for me either, not at all. Supposedly greek life is only a small % of students but as a freshman I totally felt like the minority. Even though I've had an overall good experience I totally get how it's not for everyone. So glad you made the change you needed to ❤️

Thanks for sharing this. Not every college is right for everyone - glad you mentioned that. I went to Georgia Tech where they said, in my freshmen orientation, "look to your left, look to your right - two of you will not be here next year." On my left was Roger, on my right was Chris. Both of them - gone the next year. GT was not a lot of fun. I took 7 calculus classes, statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, probability, chemistry 1 & 2, biology, neuroscience, particle dynamics, emag, optics - I haven't even gotten to my core electrical engineering classes yet - and as if that wasn't enough, we had to take 5 classes in humanities and 5 more in social studies, and public speaking and technical writing. Anyhow, I was there for many long years. I still have nightmares to this day about my exams at GT - and I am 50. But hey, I retired this month. I'm a multimillionaire now. It was one big boot camp, but when I got out of there, I knew there was no challenge I couldn't meet. I was still pulling all-nighters even last month. Because I fucking could - GT trained me to - sometimes 4 nights in a row. Everyone else around me tapped out. So, in summary, I understand you had a miserable experience. You're not alone. Not everyone enjoys their college experience. I hated mine 6 days a week, and loved it 1 day a week - Saturday - but only on the weekends with home football games in which we won. Those were not many. Georgia Tech alums never ask each other when they graduated - it is always "when did you get out?" like it was a prison. And if anyone ever calls it "Georgia Tech University" I will Will Smith them one - it's not a university - it's an institute - Georgia Institute of Technology. I'm glad you felt like UGA helped you progress to where you are now and you are thankful for your experience there. And happy to hear that you're doing well at GSU now - everyone I know who went there is doing great, although I know many people who went to GSU who regret not having the "college life." I also took classes at GSU - it's a school where most of the students are mature, have day jobs, know what they want to study, are focused on their mission, and are there to get it done. And I respect that. Best of luck.

I transferred to UGA in Fall and have been here 2 semesters and am taking action towards transferring again lmao. going to GSU in the Fall. I’ve had a really hard time here honestly. I felt really isolated and lonely especially being in such a huge school. It could also be my imagination but I felt like the fact that I’m Indian drew some ppl away from me subconsciously. Like I’ll be in a group setting and everyone is getting along super well but wouldn’t really talk to me as much and I’d be left wondering what I did wrong. On top of that I’m in an ldr which makes things really hard at times it makes me feel super lonely. Everything combined made it hard for me to show up to class and my grades have been going down quite a bit. I also stopped taking care of myself the way I used to. It’s frustrating when I see everyone saying “UGA is a great school, it is what you make of it”. It’s all I ever hear and it makes me feel like it’s my fault that I’m in this position and that I’m wrong for feeling like I don’t fit in. I hope I can finally feel like myself again once I transfer lol (Also a key reason why I’m transferring is bc I didn’t know u had to apply to the business majors and I didn’t get into the program I wanted. Not interested in competing for my major if there’s a chance I won’t even get in by the end of my senior year.)

I felt this way heavily throughout my time at UF. I made it work and found my inner introvert space with 3 or 4 friends but I totally understand what you mean. I went through severe apathy and avoidant depression and isolation when my *older* friends graduated, and I got very sick junior year. It affected my grades heavily and made my whole course of becoming a veterinarian harder.

My daughter is a little on the shy side as well. I was considering some small private colleges in Georgia such as Berry, Agnes Scott, and Oglethorpe because I think the environment would be better for her to focus on studies. UGA provides a myriad of opportunities, but those opportunities can be distracting when you're constantly bombarded with meetings, signups, trips, fundraisers, etc. Unfortunately, those private colleges are so ridiculously expensive, so she may have to go to UGA for the lower tuition. Actually, UGA is better for her because she can get her master's and doctorate degrees there without changing schools. But, I'm just afraid she may feel overwhelmed by the size of the campus and all the events constantly going on. I think a lot of big, public universities have those same issues.

We moved to GA from Boston and your comments will carry some weight in our decision making process. I am a current student at GSU, living on campus, and I actually hate it😅. I think it's mainly the city and housing though. If your daughter is living off-campus or has a nice roommate she may have a better time then I have. I will say the curriculum so far isn't too bad, and I enjoy all of my classes and professors. I don't have any friends unfortunately, and that may also affect my opinion on the school. I do plan on staying for the Spring 2022 semester, due to financial reasons, but I plan to transfer next year.

I went to high school in Georgia, left the state for undergrad, and went to UGA for grad school. The dormitory situation at all Georgia universities is terrible (a male friend at Georgia tech lived in a dorm with two toilets and two showers for 50 men...). In terms of anecdata, every person I have ever met who chose their own first-year roommate had a horrible living situation, so I was not surprised to hear that the woman in the video had a terrible living situation. She doesn't mention talking to her RA about her problems or requesting to move to a different dorm, though - the video is short, but if you're not happy, those are always options. It sounds like the living situation and having roommates interested in partying and going downtown might be why this woman's social focus was on going downtown and nothing else. What I loved about UGA was the sheer number of free events and clubs on campus and alcohol isn't the focus of the majority of them. There is a non-alcoholic guide to Athens. (Obviously, if you're depressed, it's hard to motivate yourself go out, but tons of social options not involving drinking are and were there!) Only about a quarter of undergrads at UGA are Greek, but there are a number of honors clubs within majors that also have Greek names, so maybe the woman in this video is confusing them all? I am not sure who gave this woman advice to rush for a sorority, especially since she describes herself as being shy - in my opinion, that was awful advice. I never heard anyone saying anything directly racist but was also in a department that was about 50% American, 50% international students and didn't go to frat parties, etc. A friend with southeastern Asian heritage who went to UGA for undergrad recently told me that a number of people at UGA had surprisingly told her, "You're the first Asian friend I've ever had!" - even people from metro Atlanta, even people in the honors program. That said, there are around 40,000 students, so even if you're not white, odds are that there is another group for students with the same ethnicity, if that matters to you. I am glad I didn't go to Georgia Tech for undergrad; in terms of more anecdata, my friends complained about the quality of teaching in a lot of undergraduate classes. Their quality of life was often poor. Aside from the quality of the dorms, many friends got in the habit of carrying decoy wallets for when they got mugged. Another acquaintance was pistol whipped during a mugging on campus and suffered brain damage. This was about 10 years ago, so campus is hopefully safer now. The quality of teaching at Georgia State has improved and it seems like the quality of students has improved - the average SAT score there is now a little bit above the national average. For many years, though, Georgia State had the reputation of being much, much easier than UGA or Georgia Tech, so that's something to take into consideration in terms of grad school, future career choices, etc.

I just graduated from Georgia State, and besides them being so money hungry, parking and non-traditional campus, I enjoyed It and glad I went there. UGA was my dream school in high school, but I was scared of being probably like 1 out of 4 black students in a class. However, before this video, I was considering taking the offer of my masters in law there which is just a one year program before graduating… I was wondering if I could withstand for a year.. whew this is now a decision factor.

Heyo!! I’m bisexual and trans as well, lul, and I’m in my second semester at UGA. While there will always be bad people, I’ve found a wonderful lgbtq community here. I go to a lot of student run support groups, lgbt clubs, and we even do a “gay coffee” outing at Starbucks every week!! There’s also a lgbt resource center here which is a really nice space, as well as lgbt therapists and counselors to talk to (and UGA is one of the only colleges that can get students HRT through the health center👀). I know housing is also accommodating for trans people too. If you look for it, you’ll find the right people and find a wonderful community. I know there’s lot to consider with college, but just know you shouldn’t worry about not being able to be yourself at school :] best of luck with everything, you got this!!

I was born in Athens and my home place is one county northeast of Athens. Being from the Athens metro area, I heard a lot about the struggles of freshmen at UGA, but the reason I chose the transfer student route was because I didn't like the idea of a 300-person math class. I transferred there from UNG-Oconee and Athens Tech. Since I was residing with my family, that put a very thick wall between me and the party scene, so there's clearly some aspects you're familiar with that I'm not. The very best part of my college experience was Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM), and I don't say that lightly! I attended the one at UGA. There's also a BCM at Georgia State, so I would definitely recommend checking that out. If I had kids wanting to obtain their degrees from UGA, I would make them take the transfer student route, primarily because for almost all the core stuff, there's cheaper equivalents in the Athens area, namely UNG-Oconee and, to an extent, Athens Tech. I know this because I attended all 3 schools. The classes that will transfer can be found using the UGA transfer equivalency tool. While attending UGA, I had a few consecutive semesters of extreme anxiety issues. About a year ago, I started taking an anxiolytic called Buspirone, and that ended the extreme anxiety issues. I still worry about some things, but so does everyone else. I graduated from UGA last December, and my biggest regret is not putting enough emphasis on skill development. When I was an undergrad, I obsessed over my grades. If I could go back and change it, I would put great emphasis on skill development while trying to maintain a decent GPA.

I honestly think there’s plenty of opportunities for POC to get involved and feel supported at UGA. don’t let my video deter you. I'm not going to let this sway my entire decision, but now I'm worried about coming here. Hearing about racism and homophobia (and both DEFINITELY apply to me) was very depressing. I just watched this video and your experience at UGA was completely up to you. Sororities are not for everyone. Downtown is not for everyone. But UGA is so much more. Because you chose to go downtown every night and your grades suffered is not UGA's fault. There are student groups, service activities, research opportunities, religious organizations...so much you can do at UGA but you make it sound like that of the 40K students there, everyone is shallow and only participates in Greek life and drinking which is not true. Athens offers so much more with great restaurants, a vibrant music scene, and various sports teams to cheer on. I sent two kids to UGA, neither of which participated in sororities or downtown activities and both loved their experience there. They got involved with student organizations, volunteered as sports coaches, became a student mentor, all while maintaining A averages. I felt the need to speak up here because your experience of UGA and Athens is what you made it. Many other kids come here with their priorities in order and have an amazing experience. UGA doesn't suck because you had other plans.

Great points! That’s why I said Why “I” hated UGA because I can only see things through my personal perspective. It was a personal account of what I went through!

There's no conspiracy about drinking being promoted in college towns... alcohol is a dangerous drug, and at UGA you either hold your shit together or you get lost in the sauce. Greek life only makes up 25% of the undergrad community... look it up. You are there to go to school and get a degree. Sounds like you lost sight of that getting into the downtown scene. Night life always brings out trashy folks, and it sounds like you met a lot of them.

I had crippling depression too To me you are going to hate life if you keep up this intention So you go to gsu and what do you do besides go down town again or the other Two option's Georgia aquarium or world of coke I think the problem is you ur vibe. Comes across as nothing is ever enough and I bet 10000$ you still wont be happy after gsu unless you see YOUR faults which you should send this vid to your roommates and ask what the vibe they got from you was good luck but depression can make the best time feel miserable and that the way you will allways be god bless your black husband one day he NEEDS IT

Kids today are simply doing something wrong. UGA greek life was absolutely incredible in the 90's. Of course we actually interacted with the opposite sex instead of being afraid of them, and our faces weren't buried in a phone all the time. I guess the most important thing today is race, and that is what we must all be obsessed with now.

@@minacailyn6703 it’s just sad that you look at the world that way. Us black peoples need to get away from the idea that we are oppressed. We not. Simple. Change your perspective and stop spreading preconceived opinions onto people. It perpetuates hate. We good. Fr. I’m sorry you got depression, but we all have issues. The school ain’t racist. It’s your perspective. Don’t be influenced.

@@CoachExplains it is my perspective and my experience and that’s why the video says why “I” dropped out and why “I” hated it. It’s all based on my view which is all I have since I see the world from my eyes. if my experience offended you I apologize. but these are things that I experienced. never said the school was racist. just had some personal experiences with people who seemed close minded and wanted to share. We are all entitled to share our own opinions and nobody has the same experience as someone else.

She's white to me and my progressive definition of white (Latino definition) but in no way do I endorse racial derogatory comments. That is why I believe rap and hip hop should be banned as music genres since they have so many racist lyrics in those genres. Peace and promote banking reform to help ALL AMERICANS!!
