no actually most of the mess stems from old english and french + vowel shift between 1400 and 1700. First the normans came in, brought many french words into the language and changed some spelling of the old english (germanic) words. Then there was the great vowel shift that changed the way english words were pronounced. English spelling was never adapted afterwards, they never conducted a spelling reform wich leads to this hotch potch of different rules.

@craftah Жыл бұрын
well it's actually pretty easy to learn how to spell english words and how to pronounce them (when you are a native speaker you know how to speak before you know how to write and read but when you learn a language you see written words and listen how they're pronounced) like i would say it's harder to pronounce words correctly because we don't have as many sounds as english does like "th" or all those different vowels. to many non native speakers "boss" and "bus" sound the same, "look" and "luke" sound the same etc.
@starknight1037 ай бұрын
@@craftah There are languages besides English that have the TH sound like Arabic, Albanian, Swahili, Greek, Icelandic, and standard European Spanish( where the TH sound in that variety of Spanish is represented by the letters Z and C(but only if it is next to an E or I)). But generally, it is a rare sound that only appears in 7% of the world's languages.

Why? Primarily due to the incorporation of british isle languages, the original subjugation by the Normans, the introduction of latin styled (old French) language in an emerging upper class, and various encounters with foreign languages in the old British empire. English is probably the most changed language in history, due to meddling from so many other nations. It had as much structure as any other language a few centuries before all that. The flip side is that it has turned English into possibly the most colorful and robust language on the planet, just due to it having so many pointless words, seemingly meaningless sayings and borrowed terms/phrases, as well as ways of creating poetic meaning by utilizing all of it.

Who fcking cares?! "AAAAAaaaaaaaaAAAAnD let's spell KNOT with K in the beginning, so people may know 1000 years ago it was pronounced with K in the beginning and now it's not."
@CrypticWizard95 жыл бұрын
@@Halera- English is still pretty well spelt the way it was in the 16th century, that's where a lot of our problems come from. The Great Vowel Shift isn't really accounted for, and words like laughter, and daughter still have the vestigial gh that used to be that guttural sound like you have in Dutch or Low German. This is made worse too by the fact English is basically a West German language trying to sound smart by using French/Latin words at this point

We Filipinos don't even know why we start with the letter F, despite the fact that we don't have that letter in our Filipino Alphabet. Americans?
@bigshrekhorner5 жыл бұрын
I am not American, but I will still answer the question. Your nationality name (Filipinos) comes from the english word for your country, Philippines (Ph got simplified to F, since they are the same sound, and one P was dropped). Philippines comes from a Greek first name, Philippos, which literally means "the one who likes horses"
@bigshrekhorner5 жыл бұрын
Actually, I made a mistake, the name Filipinos comes directly from a spanish ruler named Felipe or something (thus Filipinos is not a direct derivative from the country's name), whose name and the name Philippines both derive from the Greek name I mentioned before
