Your comment about being scared to try new things made me think of a quote my grandmother used to say to me when I was little, “what would you be willing to try if you knew you would not fail.” This quote still resonates w me now that I’m in my 40’s.

Glad to see you back home. As far as sewing goes, using patterns is good! I've been sewing for thirty years and use them all the time. If you want to try designing your own clothes, use patterns as a guide and just modify them. It helps give you an idea of the sizing and how the pieces should go together and you can also mix up pattern pieces from different patterns. I think you're doing great, especially being a relatively new sewist. Just keep practicing and you'll get there. I'm still learning new things even after sewing all these years..:)

My grandma used to saw most of the clothes for her kids back when my country had nothing in stores. She went for these weekend classes in town and first learned how to use patterns there and the basics, and later would get new patterns from magazines or experiment on her own. She even made my aunt's prom outfit. There really is no limit for what we can do if we set our minds to it! She still loves sawing and is doing it everyday! It's great to see you two back home and to see your video! The tiny home may not be all that you need in winter but the fireplace is warm, the home cooking, the flat bread, the food looks delicious. You have a great set up, separate work place, building for your music and your sewing, hobbies. Having sewn some of my own dresses and shirts growing up I can say that sewing is a wonderfully creative skill. I learned from my family. My mothers gone now but she was talented at sewing. Having learned to sew in school, she sewed her brides maids dresses for her wedding & our dress clothes over the years, was fast at getting projects done. My sister still sews for ladies. It's all about the measurements. Your dresses & outfits Isabel look beautiful on you! The natural dying of fabric with colors from berries from the forest is such an inspiration. You can probably find courses & ideas on line to further your sewing projects.

Welcome home, Isabel! It must be such a change to go from the sun and beach all the way back to winter wonderland just as spring is about to start. It all has its own beauty though - thank you so much for sharing it with us! I think we are often scared of trying something new because it forces us to acknowledge that we might fail. But being able to accept that we will probably fail at first and that only practice makes perfect is what helps us grow in the end. Sending much love ❤

So nice to see you back home again. Like you I only have a cold water tap here in my cabin. Lately I've been lazy, only washing a few dishes under the cold tap water, without soap, until my hands are too cold and uncomfortable. Your cooking, baking, flat bread, etc. is so good. Good for you to have those feelings about sewing. Gandhi said "man's greatest invention has been the sewing machine". Gandhi apparently made his clothes on his sewing machine. Today, March 12th, it finally feels like spring is just around the corner. The snow in the field and orchard around my cabin is finally getting soft and there are few bare patches here and there. Maybe by April I'll be out in the garden planting that first crop of peas. Enjoy your spring! Cheers from B.C.!

Buy a couple of Galvanized buckets and haul water inside. Way easier and WARMER to do as I suggested. You could also get the container for water with spigot to have as usable drinking, cooking water. Work smarter not harder. Could also get drinking water hose, (INSULATE) whole hose into house and run it inside with a faucet end. Could cap off busted pipe end somewhere and run insulated hose through same opening where water line ran.

A great resource for learning to design your own clothes is a book called Sewing Love by Sanae Ishida. In the book she instructs you how to make a sloper - which is basically a flat pattern version of your own body. From there you can use the sloper to make your own pattern designs. Happy sewing!

It’s great that you have so much interest in dressmaking. My mother was a tailor & she taught us all sewing skills. Here’s some tips; use paper piecing as patterns without a seam allowance, from clothes you already have, European pattern books like Burda use this method, it fits the body much better. Label them & store in ziplock plastic bags. The cutting out part of sewing is the most important step, using as much of the fabric & correct placement of the pieces so that the stretch/ease always goes around the body width wise. The second most important step in sewing is to always iron your seams as you go, this will ensure a professional look when finished, especially important for cottons/linens you’re using. If you really want to sew fast(kids clothes) especially with stretch fabrics you’ll need a serger with differential feed. The better servers are the ones that also do a cover stitch which is the flat seam on all stretch materials. You can get secondhand factory sewing machines & sergers which sew very fast, home sewing machines get worn out quickly when you’re sewing all the time, I’ve been thru a few. Have fun with that endeavour.👍

When you say your tiny isn't set up for winter living, what do you mean? I suspect that your wood stove heats your place really well, probably too well sometimes! A rug on the floor and window coverings would help retain some heat when not using the stove and make the place feel a little more cozy. Skirting your tiny would also help in the winter not only helping to keep the tiny a bit warmer, but with helping to prevent any pipes underneath from freezing too. I'm excited to see what improvements/fixes/changes your make with your tiny. I have a tiny too and always love to see what people do with theirs and how. I think the how is more important for me. Thanks for allowing us to join you in your adventures. Your videos are always calming and inspiring. Much love from Canada.

Let me tell you I bought some wood to practice chopping here in my sk8 shop for my pocket stove & it was hard for sure to split. I need 1 of those wedge things you split the wood with. Thatz been my goal is to do lil things like that. You did inspire me to buy a jackery & be prepared. We had those fires yrs ago here in NorCal,the next year pg&e was turning off the electrical in different areas. The jackery works pretty good,I ran my refrigerator off of it for over 24hrs. I have not charged it w/the solar yet,I was waiting for longer days. I have plans to build some above ground gardens at another spot we have & a person from Humboldt said she'd give some of her stuff since she's selling her farm. Anyways I got a shipping container I'm thinking of setting something up on top or the side. Hey I'm making lemonade outa the city life until I can have a piece of paradise. I've been talking about it for many yrs,we all need to get bk to a simpler way of life. Me & my boyfriend took a private class from a friend that stitches,if you say he sews he will correct you. We chose to have him teach us the reconstruction of sneakers, equally as hard as chopping wood but tedious. I have a whole new appreciation for the person making Vans sneakers in a factory. We never got to put a shoe back together cause that would take more than a day but we do have patterns now. I still have alot to learn w/all my machines to make stuff. 1 foot in city life while I dream of living out in the wilderness. Keep sewing you'll get better at it every time. L&R

I don't know if it's the "correct" way to do it, (I'm an old self taught white às tortillas guy), but when I've made flour tortillas, I didn't use oil in the pan, I used flour. Same as shaping them, a generous fling\pinch. It makes them non stick. I used a copper bottom stainless steel frying pan back then, but cast iron is what I'd use today. You've inspired me to make a batch! It's been 30 years or more since I've made any... Literally my mouth is watering thinking about it. Oh to be young again. Fill each day with life. The enjoyment of accomplishment (work), laughter (play), creativity (love). Reclaim and embrace the spark of wonder and inspired amazement to learn everything, then repressed by a school system, until now that it's safe again to see, and love life with fresh eyes. Able to appreciate the healthy wonder of youth, mentally, physically, and spiritually balanced. Realize that man created religions to take control of other's mind, body, and spirit. We are born into this world connected to source. We are not human beings. We are spirit(s) being human. That's all. An inspired tangent ramble. It's all your fault, and for that, I Thank you.

I'm glad to see you happy at home. I've been thinking about how you heat your tiny home and your limited electricity. Since you're up in a mountainous area, both wind and solar could help your mini grid. For heating you may want to look into a heat pump (there's 3 different kinds), a lot of people are using them these days. If you do decide to take up my suggestion, please film the process so that people can see the good, bad, and ugly of the process and the results. Thanks for making KZbin a more enjoyable place.

So glad to see you home. When you’re washing dishes outside, wear a pair of cotton lined kitchen, cleaning gloves, and then you can also put a pair of gloves underneath for warmth and water protection.

I use a plastic bin for doing dishes. Also works well for hand washing clothing. I heat some water up, dump it in, add soap and some cold water, wash everything, then you only need to rinse the dishes outside which then just takes seconds. And making clothing from patterns is difficult, so my goal is to manage to make something from a pattern.

There's a saying... there's no place like home. I've traveled a lot in my life, now I'm content with the off grid cabin and my other home. Being away makes you appreciate what you already have and love. Don't worry Isabel about your sewing, your not failing, its all a learning process. The clothing you've made looks great on you. We all fail at times, that's okay, you just try again. How do you get the recipe for your tortillas?

I watch your videos and feel that you can use so much help getting things you need and fixing other things that makes me very proud to watch these videos. The food alone that you share with us looks amazing and I want to go and make it myself. Keep pushing forward and be safe. Peace and happiness always.

When I first started sewing I messed up the first projects, part of figuring it out. Patterns are annoying, I think on purpose to discourage us from making our own stuff. I had more success when I took apart something I knew fit me (once it was old). Eventually you will have a basic pattern that fits you that you can modify as you wish. Keep at it. You are already better than you know!! Ps- be careful of threads around Black. Eating thread scraps can mess up a cat stomach badly.
