Why I left school at 16...

Hey guys, it been a while. In this video I chat about why I left school at 16 and began to focus on my KZbin channel. I know quite a lot of people were asking if I was in education so I thought I would make this video to make it clear and give you an understanding of why I left. I know a few people will disagree with my opinion but thats fine. Whether you are at school, work or whatever best of luck to you :)

So glad you shared this, I'm a teacher and it's heartbreaking to see students who have been pushed into doing Alevels through pressures from parents or society rather than doing a BTEC, apprentiship or a job that they'd love and progress through. I'm so glad you've followed your dreams and you're family have supported you!

I almost quit school when I was 17 because I wasn't learning anything, though I was only a few points shy of graduating. So I stayed in school for a half year. But I was so bored I was disruptive in class. So they gave me a classroom of my own and I taught English to people that the school system had failed and they could barely read or write much more than their name. I really enjoyed that, and came up with my own technique of teaching people to read. It was quite satisfying when years later people would stop me on the street and thank me for teaching them to read. 13 years later in 1987 some guys took my teaching technique, called it Hooked on Phonics, and made a lot of money from it. --- I never went to college except to teach in the late 1980's and 90's. I taught television production at our local community college, and put on computer graphics seminars at several universities in the summers. Our public schools in America don't really teach much of any use. Mostly they teach how to stand in lines, memorize things without understanding it, and to follow a schedule. Basically they are grooming factory workers. Though in more recent years they barely teach even that, schools here have turned into social communism indoctrination centers.

Hi. I was the very same as you. I left school at 16. I'm 40 now. I hated school and always preferred working outdoors and camping and bushcraft. Leaving school never held me back in life. I'm from Ireland and I've lived in Australia, Spain, Thailand and England. I've owned bmw cars, campervans and motorbikes and worked most of my life driving and operating machinery which is what I love. Now I breed and race Racehorses for a living so leaving school at 16 never held me back. You got to do what you want in life and follow your dreams. Life isn't always about money and how big your car or house is and having lots of materialistic things. Love your channel by the way. Keep up the good work x.

Although I have already commented on this video, one thing that stands out is how grounded you are, down to great parenting, a great personal attitude and a lust for life. I work in a University and half the kids there could split an atom in a Math's class but would be incapable of getting by in real life unless there was a complete step by step guide. I have watched you, and Mum and Dad grow through both channels and there is not an educational establishment that could teach you what you have learned .Well Done Becky and keep on making the videos to share with others so that they may educate others that life is about personal fulfillment and joy, and not working your life to make another rich

Just pulled my son from school, he is 14. They were not able to adapt to my sons needs. I will home school him now, keep him outdoors learn things the school never taught but are essential for life. Good on you!

there is no way to really know a person from watching their vids. BUT... a few things I have picked up on you is, you seem very mature for your young age, you are most def. a lover of nature & the outdoors & becoming great at it, you seem very sensible & driven to be outdoors. be confident in your decision, make your own way in the world & go for doing what you love! Your story about school time is actually the same one I experienced, and also dropped out of school as a 16 year old. I then got into apprenticeship as an industrial technician and got a job in the high-tech industry with CNC machines and became a department manager, and now I am retired, enjoying life, the forest, the beach and nature. I did exactly as you say, one has to go for what one is passionate about, I did that, jobs were also part of my hobby. Want to think you have to follow your dreams and if you can make a living off of it, then just keep going. 👍 We'll keep an eye on you so it will succeed. 😉

You are in an apprenticeship .I'm 46 yrs old I left school at 16 yrs old for the past 30 yrs I've been learning so what I'm saying to you is ppl will judge you or whatever. But I totally agree with you do what you are best at doing and you'll find you're life goals fall in place when you lest expect it . You are so inspiring , authentic and original. Yes just be yourself. I know you are going to be successful that school or college would never have given you the opportunity. So just keep on learn from your awesome father he is a wise man. I appreciate your story. I left school at 18 years old and went back at 24 years old. Take a few years off but go back in like 3 or 5 years it's amazing how taking a break and finding yourself will change your approach in the classroom. Try going back maybe around 21 and you will have so much fun to improve your trade/career :)

You are wise beyond your years. Follow your heart; you will never betray you. In my six decades of life I have had 2 careers (now working on the third). The first career was chosen on the basis of what society dictates to us, to engage a career that has the best potential to make money. I was miserable. The second career involved working outdoors with horses, a passion, and it was amazing. As life progresses, new passions present themselves, and one moves on into a different experience. Loving what one does is 99% of life and life is so precious. What I have found is if you truly love something, there will be a way to make money. It is like magic. Thanks so much for sharing this! Brilliant!...I had the same feeling about school it's one model - the curriculum is very narrow (unless you go to a private school), but I felt pressured to persevere through peer pressure and family! I found my freedom through mountain biking then tour cycling that gave me an intense love for the natural environment. Thanks

Take a break from school its really your choice. Nothing wrong with that. Please don't dismiss the thought of going back. When its time, you'll know. Staying in school to 18 is a fairly new thing in the UK, it always used to be 16. Imo the main reason the government implemented it was to tackle the huge unemployement rate in 16-18 year olds. In my experience the people who left school at 16 got a headstart in the world the 18 year olds never really caught up to unless they carried on to uni. You made the right choice following your dreams, you can always go back to education, the energy of youth is hard to recapture though.

Hi Becky, I have been watching your videos for a while now and Im pretty sure I used to live in the same area... if you went to secondary school in that area I don’t blame you for hating it...I hated it also, I stayed on to do my A-levels and failed them! I was then “persuaded” into doing an BTEC type course which I hated and never finished! When I turned 21 I realised I wanted to go down a specific career path that i needed a degree for... long story short i ended up doing an access course and have just finished my degree, I absolutely loved it! I’m now in my mid 20s! My point is... you obviously did the right thing getting out of education when you did (I wish I’d done that)!Try everything you want to have a go at! Remember you can always go back to education if you/need want to! That’s the great thing about it! Always listen to your heart and you’re right! if you work hard for something you’ll generally get it! Keep making the great vids! Give Buster a good scruffle from me!

Hi, I just found your channel. I can't believe your only 17yrs old, you are doing amazing. I also left school at 16, and it was the best day of my life..I wasn't academically minded and just wanted to travel which i did aged 20 - to 26. I'm 50 now and have that old feeling of when I was 16 again, where I want my freedom and life back. I have a job which is stressful and I am flogged to death on a zero hours contract. So you live our dream hunny and I really admire you, I am an introvert and I feel you maybe too. I love my own company and it really helps when travelling alone and not have to put up with people.. All the best to you. People who forge unusual paths often have it harder - but often ultimately end up better for it. I'd had enough of education when mine finished that I avoided it for 15 years. When I did go back and do some more, it was was rewarding and a good experience. If doing that is right for you, you'll know it.

I’m exactly the same, I didn’t attend high school at all, I only finished 8th grade. But I loved reading and learning and it has never hurt me in the least. I’ve been very successful in my work and have made more money than most. School is not for everyone. You are obviously intelligent and articulate, you will be fine, probably much better than fine, because you are a self starter and seem to know your direction in life, you’re a very impressive young lady. I also enjoy your videos and you are right about being around small minded people. I believe the saying is “it’s hard to soar with the eagles when you work with a bunch of turkeys”.
