Cassandra Bankson If you think returning a Nars product to Sephora is going to do anything good, there's no hope for you intellectually. Nars is gaining a huge market in being able to sell to China. The only thing these childish returns will do is force Sephora not to carry Nars, as it is now costing them money as well. How vain, to waste products not made using animal testing, simply to make yourself look "moral". The pollution and carbon emissions produced to replace the cosmetics is harmful to animals. Try to maintain some self-consistency for once.

Does anyone else feel kind of overwhelmed trying to be cruelty free? I know some people consider brands cruelty free even if the parent companies test on animals but that just seems weird. I feel like I can't even buy paper towels without supporting some kind of huge company that tests on animals or pays employees poorly. Thanks for the information and for sticking up for the animals 😊

iluvhp87 Babe, even as someone who eats and tries to live a vegan lifestyle I feel overwhelmed with attempting to be cruelty free. It's always a process and a journey, and education is a step along the way each time! I do feel that even if it's slow progress I'm trying. Perhaps take a similar mindset and just always do your best and keep an ear open to lean!

iluvhp87 It's definitely overwhelming and there's quite a learning curve to dealing with all this. When I first went cruelty free some years ago, I didn't know about parent companies and bought a bunch of Urban Decay products. When I learned more, I felt sick to my stomach and knew that parent company testing wasn't something I was okay with. I was so disappointed in myself for my ignorance but these things happen. Don't give up! I can say I'm a lot happier now, knowing that I'm only supporting brands that share my values, compared to when I was still buying whatever. As long as you do your best, you're making a positive change to be proud of! 😘

uxhuva see that's exactly what I mean but we have to at least try. Even just minimizing our bad habits can help though. It starts with not purchasing from Nars and just researching these companies like Estee Lauder that does test on animals and not buying from them. Let's support brands that are cruelty free like Kat Von D

I don't think any cosmetic company is cruelty-free. They may not test on animals themselves but the ingredients they use have a good chance to have been animal tested, because they need to be approved by regulatory bodies around the world. I am also curious about how you people feel about medication since there is no alternative to animal testing in the pharmaceutical industry yet, only supplementary tests. keeping in mind animal testing is incredibly expensive and these companies are looking to make maximum profits. Why accept animal testing in one scenario and not the other? This really interests me as a future scientist!
@User-vz4xm

why? why don't you answer it yourself as a scientist? THINK! is the necessary? is the test effective? as the host has said there are better / alternative ways to test the cosmetic products. why still do it?

Just some information on animal testing in China. The Chinese authorises have confirmed back in June 2014 that all Cosmetic products manufactured in China are no longer required to conduct animal testing, unless the products use new ingredients that are not registered with the Chinese government authorise as safe ingredients. Companies who Export products into The Chinese market must submit product samples when they first come into the Chinese market if the government authorities so request. The test will be a one-off test only on selective products nominated by the Chinese authorises. In general, such animal testing is only required when a product contains unknown ingredients which are not registered as a safe ingredient with the government authorities. In this case, Nars will be submitting sample products as per request by the Chinese government authorities for a once off test if the products they wanted to sell contain un-registered ingredients. Nars does not have to conduct animal testing by the company itself if they wanted to sell to the Chinese market, as the testing will be done only by the accredited labs nominated by the Government authorises. It would be a different case, if Nars conduct animal testing itself for other reasons. There are so many human being suffering, but I don't see people care much about them more than those animals. Unless one is vegan, as a human being, our activities do harm animals one way or another. Eating beef, drinking milk and put a turkey into the oven is ok, but eating other animals are not? Animal testing is worse than putting wild animals in the zoo and trap them for their entire life? Medical schools students kill hundreds of bunnies and rats to practice their skills before they become our surgeons... which way of hurting and killing is more justified than the other? I just don't get the point. Maybe I am just one selfish human being myself. But I don't judge others just based on one event or one decision. A brand needs to survive. Nars needs a bigger market and China is the market they wanted to enter. Just saying.

OMG! I am totally agreed with you! we are eating animals every single day. KFC, McDonald's sells and kills chickens way more than those animals which died because of animal testing. Why are they only focus on animal testing? Do those chickens different than rabbits and rats? Before a new drug came out they also need to test on animals too. why no body against with that? I don't get it too!

reneechen99 One difference between eating animals and having them killed for cosmetics is that one is basic for survival (your cat isn't gonna say "yummy that salad") and the other is a luxury. So I for one have too many food allergies to grain/veggies and fruit to go vegan and be healthy. So I choose to eat animals for survival. I try to buy from people I know don't support the unnatural meat industry but do it more like our ancestors did with hunting. Don't prolong suffering. That is also why I don't condone zoos or circuses. Those serve no purpose but idle entertainment for the livelong suffering of animals.

Great video Cassandra, but i have to correct you on one point. The ban on EU testing simply means that testing cosmetics on animals cannot be carried out inside the borders of the EU. So a company can test, for example in a non eu country and still sell the product inside the EU. I thought the same as you for ages and assumed if I could buy a product in my local drugstore then it must be cruelty free. Unfortunatley not the case.

SO many things wrong with this. His name is Francois Nars not 'Francisco'.... Yes Nars has sold to Shiseido however Nars has not yet started to sell in China and will not sell in China until Mid-2018. Therefore your statement that 'Nars have been supporting animal testing ever since the acquisition' is false as they have not even launched in the continent yet. They also do not 'support' animal testing. Yes they are selling into a market that requires it by law but they spend thousands upon thousands of dollars a month supporting the IIVS (Institution for In Vitro Sciences)- a company at the forefront of discovering new ways to test cosmetics that will be accepted by Chinese government. Nars have also decided not to sell in China until mid 2018 because animal testing will become illegal in Korea and therefore a huge % of the population will be exempt from testing. You can not admit that there are cosmetic items that you use that are not cruelty free and then make a video like this. It is insanely hypocritical. You can't claim to boycott a company but then still gladly use other non-cruelty free products, whether you knew of that when you bought them or not. You are still 'supporting' the brand. Huge brands such as MAC, Estee Lauder, Lancome, YSL, Dior, Benefit, etc etc etc ALL test on animals and have never issued a public announcement to say that they will be doing so the way Nars did. They never lied to the consumer. As soon as they knew animal testing was going to happen within the brand they openly spoke about it. Also, your argument about companies selling in China without animal testing wouldn't be useful for anyone at all as the Asian customers would have to buy online and have the product shipped to them without ever being able to see it or try it on beforehand. This would cost the consumer a lot of money in shipping and return shipping and would not be helpful. As someone giving advice to the public I think it's important that you are giving correct information and a lot of the information in this video is incorrect.

Hello, I'm a Chinese. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!! I feel so related after watched and against any kind of animal test. I actually did some research on Chinese law and makeup regulations. I totally agree animal testings are very wrong and unnecessary. However, since 2014 June, China stepped one step towards to stop hurting animals. They changed a part of the law. Local makeup companies don't need to do animal testing any more, but imported makeup products still need to do animal testing. Later on 2016, the government published policy(2016-2020) stated changing to system standard that setup by government and the market(makeup companies). On 2017, non-animal testings (ex:Non-animal 3T3 Infrared uptake phototoxicity test) have been approved as makeup safety assessment methods and some of the non-animal testings are approved to be industry standard testing methods. These testing are lower cost and more efficent. And as China joined WTO, its safety assessments will change towards to international standards, which what EU do. I noticed that some organizations in China are also working toward to ban the animal testing in China and educating the public. All in all, I know it's very WRONG and it's still an issue that needs to be solved IMMEDIETLY. I also believe that China is moving towards to a good direction! Sorry for my limited english! Welcome any updated relative laws or news!!!

Currently animals are used along with other testing methods as there is no alternative good enough to replace it. Many drugs have also been developed from animal sources and nature still has many for us to discover. Even ingredients used by "cruelty free" make up companies will have been tested on animals for approval by regulatory bodies. So even though a cosmetic company may not test their product on an animal, it's still not cruelty free. All in all animal testing and other uses are still necessary. Technology has s very long way to go before it can truly replace it. Animal testing is expensive and pharma companies want to make money so bare that in mind. Also a drug takes many many years from discovery to bring on your shelf just to ensure it is safe, effective. That process continues even after product launch. Animal testing is bad but can you truly see a human being a suitable replacement?

I only own a small number of NARS products because of the cost, but now I won't even consider NARS. And you're right about Kat Von D's liquid lipsticks. They are amazing! I will be visiting 100% pure; after you mentioned the scent of the mascara, I just have to check them out! Really enjoyed your video! I'm a crazy cat lady too and now I'm a new subscriber 😻😻🐈🐈❤️

I just recently heard about Nars...will never buy from them again! I went cruelty free several months ago and although it's sometimes hard to see all the new products by Chanel, Dior, etc. I know it's not worth harming an animal. Thank you.

It’s a shame that NARS would do this! I used to love the lip crayon in Cruella that I got for my birthday a few years ago, but now that I know that they test on animals, I can’t buy it anymore.:( however, I am going to try to get myself to use it up and same with my Benefit Dallas Bronzer. Most of my makeup products in my makeup collection is cruelty free!:) Great job on this video!

Why is China worried about harmful ingredients in makeup entering their country when they have the most polluted city in the world? Maybe worry about the air your breathe first. Then again, they dont seem to find affective solutions to their problems. Edit: there are so many successful brands that dont test on animals and dont have harmful ingredients. Just look at CoverFx

I'm also furious as I've found out recently that Avon is testing on animals in China because of the regulations and that it is not their choise but that they have to do it in order to sell there. It that was my company I wouldn't sell in China because of some extra cash. I thought they were cruelty free.

well actually body shop is doing what NARS did - they are owned by Loreal and loreal is not cruelty free (they say they stopped animal testings in 2013 however there is a note that "..unless it is required by law", because they sell in china. so in the end if you buy body shop your money goes to loreal which is not cruelty-free

L'oreal just recently sold The Bodyshop to a Brazilian company Natura, who I believe are cruelty free. But as Cassandra said if we as consumers buy from the cruelty free brands more, than the parent companies might rethink their values.

To take a step backwards is so disappointing to me. I really hope that NARS reconsiders their decision & they actually listen to their customers. I am trying to go cf with my makeup, I have found some amazing cf brands! I love 100% Pure too- have you tried their healthy super fruit foundation? It's so good!! again, thank you for speaking about this. Animals are living, breathing creatures and humans have no right to treat them like science experiments. love you! xoxo

Next time when you buy takeout coffee in non-recyclable plastic cup, when you buy jeans (use up to 40l of water in production of one pair), when you have all electronics on (esp when you electricity comes from coal burning)or when you driving and use a lot of gas. Just remember that ALL of it harms animals, not the ones that were born in the labs, but the real cuties.

Do not repurchase Nars, but DONT throw away the makeup you already own! That's wasting product, bad for the environment, and it makes the animal cruelty all for nothing.
