Mountain bike tech has evolved massively in the sport's short lifespan. We now have frames made from carbon fibre, electronic wireless gears, amazing suspension, tyres with advanced tread patterns/ multi-compounds. But Doddy still thinks his favourite invention is the clipless pedal!
In this video, he explains why.

Clipless pedals were the first mtb upgrade I ever bought. That was back in 2003/2004. I still own that original set of m520s. I use them on my gravel bike since buying a new set of XTs for my mtb. I can see the advantage of eggbeaters in thick mud, but after so many years of abuse, Shimano's durability can't be beat imo.

Rode clipped in for 6 years, then went back to flats because of the sketchier trails we were riding. After a few rides adjusting back to flats, I haven't gone back. It's been four years. My XT flats with Five-tens have been fantastic. My riding technique is better as well.

Been riding clips since 1995 and have always loved them for all the same reasons. Every now and then I’ll see a KZbinr say that I need to ride flats to up my skills for stuff like bunny hops. Then I forget all about it and just go ride like always.

I rode SPDs around 1992, on my fully rigid aluminum Klein Attitude, and got the original Egg Beaters in 1998. They look like they were hand forged by a blacksmith in a barn, just gorgeous. I recently rebuilt them, and am putting them on my new LUX. These pedals are over 20 years old now. If you want to take them from me you will have to pry them from my cold dead hands. Clips let you dance with your bike. That feels amazing.

@@marcalvarez4890 Wow, impressive! I’m on my 5th set of Time ATAC, mostly rock strikes take them out. If the new eggbeaters are still as good, I’m thinking I could learn a new pedal system, I mean how hard can it be?

@@nick_john Fifth set?!?! WTF? The new egg beaters are nowhere close to as pretty as the original forged ones, but I've found mine to be indestructible. I decided at the end of October 2020 I was going to give clipless pedals a chance. Absolutely loved the immediate difference in up hill power and the ability to stay in contact with the pedals at all times. Fast forward 1 month. November 28. Decided to go ride a super gnarly downhill park (Windrock). Hit a huge step up, and the bike pitched forward hard. I was unable to release the bike like normal and went down head first. Here we are 4 months later and I’m still recovering from a destroyed left femur. Had to have emergency surgery to stop heavy internal bleeding and to stabilize the bone and remove fragments. 3 weeks ago, I had a 2nd surgery for some hardware removal and a bone graft. I’m hoping this is the downhill part ( no pun intended) but I won’t know much until the end of may. So, please don’t do what I did. You should ride them fit at least a year or more before any extreme riding and test yourself in an emergency bail out situation. And of course have fun. I’ll be back out soon

Get well soon. That's my biggest concern about clips. I rode my old mtb with toeclips (straps) for years and I know how to get out of them to bail out. But on my new bike I have flats and I miss the toeclips. Could move the strappy pedals over, could buy new clips and shoes. Need a video on how easy it is to bail out of clips! Anyway hope you're back at it soon.

I appreciate Doddy's take... for Doddy. I rode clipless for 20 years and pedal straps before those -just like Doddy. I started using flats for my fatbike And somehow never went back. There is a playfulness to flats that clipless lack. I think it is as important to mention the advances in flats over yesteryear. They've gotten lighter, larger surface area, rubber and pin connection is much more solid. They aren't clipless but they have come a long way. I recently bought some mallet Es to head back to clips on Occassion. Like anything in biking I think being open minded and understanding the benefits and limits of each tool is gonna give you more tactics to enjoy your biking experience.

Started on flats. Went to clips for about 15-20 yr. now back on flats, learning some new things, but will go back to clips again soon. Definitely see advantages of both at different stages of your development and for different kinds of riding, but its all transferable across those needs so experimentation over time/ discipline is valuable.

After whizzing down a rough track, my foot bouncing out of the pedal and the pedal whizzing around and cracking me in the shin, and me then me lying on the side of the trail in agony, I decided to join the clipped pedal brigade near 30 years ago. At the time there was no dispute, if you took mountain biking seriously you bought clips. Its a decisions I haven't regretted. My Nike Poobahs still serve me well, legendary.

Great video and the quality with b-roll is fun to watch.

I just did my first clipless ride yesterday from riding years on flats and couldn't believe how much easier it was to climb. Brand new pedals and shoes so still need some time to break them and and fully get used to them. You are absolutely right on the commitment part though. Riding tech downhill sections on clips is kinda scary and will take some getting used to but the uphill benefits are worth it for me.

Great video! One major advantage worth mentioning is how much longer clipless shoes seem to last when compared to their flat soled counterparts. There is no denying that if you ride often, flat pedals will quickly chew through the soft rubber soles on your expensive shoes. Both approaches have numerous respective benefits, no doubt about that! It's just quite painful for a pair of 250 dollar (CAD) Crank Bros shoes to be trashed barely halfway through one season! In comparison, a pair of 2012 Shimano AM45 shoes - although getting pretty tired by now, are still going strong and serving their intended purpose to this day. Perhaps the old adage still rings true that "They don't make 'em like they used to!" Cheers

Clips exclusively for years. Though I did get flats this year for practicing gnarlier stuff if needed. I often get asked by my flat wearing friends do I often fall and get stuck to the bike. I tell them: First off, clips give you a lot of incentive to do it right and not fall. But I can get out in time 19 out of 20 times. Which translates to falling with my bike once every 2-3 years. It's not like it's a regular thing.

It has taken awhile to get used to them and I often wonder if I could do my local downhill runs clipped in now that I’m more used to downhill riding. Where I live the trails are rough and technical (and I'm not that good of a rider) ,so flats and me just didn't get along, but I like the stability that the wider platform gives. When a hill looks technical, I might unclip the right pedal so I can get it down faster if needed. Tip: A spritz of "Finish Line Pedal and Cleat Dry Film Lubricant" on the pedals helps with clipping in and, importantly bailing out when the time comes.

I raced BMX and moto-X in the 70's with flats. Raced road bikes with leather strap & toe-clips then clip-less. Fell over a number of embarrassing times at traffic lights. Started MTB'g with clipless. About 5 years ago I forgot my clipless MTB shoes on a MTB trip. Someone had a spare set of flats just so I could ride. All my knee pain and swelling I was getting after rides magically went away. I also reverted to my old Moto / BMX style riding and started sending it way more. Now I ride a few of the steepest downhill single tracks near my house and I do have to bail off at times. I've never personally seen anyone ride these super steeps with clipless. I will give them kudos if I do ever see someone with them on those trails. On the flip side, I do miss the climbing benefit.

I've ridden both for years, although more recently I've been mainly on flats to get my jumping technique back in line.

I'd been riding clipless for 25+ years but then last year I decided to try flats. It took me a bit of a time to get into the skill to place feet correctly and stop relying on being connected to the pedal. I now finally start doing the proper bunnyhop using my body and feel less fears in drops. But I guess masters like Doddy can do all this even clipped :-D

Best thing I ever done ! I feel like I can't ride flats now. I lost a lot of speed and confidence at the start but a year later and I'm faster than I ever was. Clips everytime for me 🤟🏻

Just switched to clipped in from flats my entire life. Still getting used to it so I am not riding as confidently as I did on my flats but climbing does feel better. I never had issues with my feet coming off flats to be honest, even rough DH in Whistler, but I've been riding clipped in on the road for the past year so figured I would try in MTB.

I started riding clipless and found that I wasn't very confident with my riding, so for the last 2 years I have been on flats and absolutely love it. I will probably switch back to clips at some point.

I switch between clipless and flats, flats for trail parks but I intend to spend a lot more time on my local Ridgeway clipped in and may brave the trail parks clipped in too, I'll see how I go. For single track and the rolling hills of the Marlborough downs and Ridgeway all day epics i must admit I prefer being clipped in. Great feature 👍

I ride both and both have their plus and minus points. I always ride clipped on my gravel bike, but a while ago decided to try clipless on my hard tails. It was interesting. I quickly built up confidence descending, but the main area I felt uncomfortable was on tight switchback climbs. After a few month I went back to flats on my MTB’s and now feel less connected to my bike and worry more about my feet getting bounced off on rough descents. Funnily enough I’ve had more injuries from pedal strikes than from not being able to unclip quick enough. Swings & roundabouts I suppose, but am getting tempted to go back to clips again as do feel once you’re clipped in, you know your feet are where they need to be and they stay there.

I ride clipless pedals always, most of my riding is XC, not racing (I'm too old and fat) but casual fun riding, some rides are long all-day rides and I feel clipless gives me more control and I feel less fatigued compared to when I rode with flats.

Riding clip-less for years but recently thought I would try flats. The end of my first ride, pedal gouged the crap out of my shin. I re-installed my old clip-less pedals so fast, blood was still running down my leg!

I rode clipless for 20 years, or more. I really didn’t think that there was any going back. Last year For some crazy reason I decided to ride flats. What you can get now is so much better than before and I found myself liking flats (5Ten Impacts make a difference). I agree with all that you put forward and I wonder now if going back to clipless will be a new experience. We shall see.

as someone who'd been riding flats since the start, I totally agree about the heavy back end; it was really noticeable at the start. I ended up rising the front end quite a bit to compensate. I found that the first month was a mental nightmare due to commitment, especially on the steeps: you really have to focus and make sure you get all the lines well, as bailing / falling can be bit daunting. Few months in, they do feel quite good, especially if you can adjust the release tension. Also long distance pedaling is NOTICEABLE. Now if I ride super steep stuff or jumpy / jibby trails - i'll take flats. Rest is excellent with clips.

Nahh. Have you tried CB mallets? I have the newer ones and the old ones. The old one is scary, has plates made of alum shapped like teeth. The newer one i have, the mallet dh has 8 pins on each side. I also had shin wounds from my egg beaters and candies. Lol

totally see all those point, haf to switch to clipless due to pandemic out of stock flat shoe... got few scratch on my bike while clip and pedal wearing a bit but now that i'm use to it that's golden... and those crankbrother with their easy release are awesome in technical climb!

Do the crank brothers pedals release in a different way. I ride clipped in on the road but have always been flats on mtb. There’s a few times I’ve fallen because of the clips on the road so that put me off with mtb.
@stevem.
@stevem. 3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesblacklaws23 i never ride road/shimano clip, But i know you are sort of glue to a fix position on the pedal. Crankbrother pedal have a flaoting amount of degre before they release either 10 or 15 degre some you can rotate your foot a bit ( better for old knee injury then being glue to the pedal) when i begin my journey into clipless i begin with the easy realese (10 degre) and had fall sometime in really technical trail due to clip and beginner mistake. if you switch from road clip to mtb clip (crankbrother) it might be worth borrow some friend's pedal to give a try before buying. worth i try... like doddy said i feel one with my bike and being able to be more aggressive on downhill side of the hill! so have a good ride!

I tried clips for most of a season, once. I really liked the climbing efficiency of it, and the fact that you don't risk loosing a pedal on a super chunky section. But when it came to jumping... Well, that was scary. So I switched back to flats. xD I have trouble learning how to jump correctly, as is. Don't need another thing messing with my brain, while in the air.
