Sonic Battle is like the closest game with Sonic Chronicles below it where the story feels like an ULTRA MEGA SONIC FAN FROM THE COMICS STAFF PROBABLY worked on the story. These text heavy games kinda feel like what Frontiers tried to do in terms of the characters talking a lot about the setting and the new lore which i like in a Sonic game. It gives it that epic story vibe that makes you interested on what new discoveries there is to discover.

Never got to play Sonic Battle since I never owned a GBA, but it's not a title that completely under my radar. I love how sharp and angular the artstyle is. I think it fits for an aggressive fighting game. The ost is something I haven't heard much of, but I adore Emerald Beach especially the Generations remix. This game's story is something I want to get into now thanks to the Shadow Generations animation. Everything with the Gizoids is straight lore that I didn't really look into, so it'll be fun to learn more. Thinking about it now, it is interesting to me that Sonic X never touches on any of that stuff despite Emerl being present in the tournament arc.

This was a dope video, I lowkey think with them reestablishing emerl as a character in the canon maybe we'll get a sonic battle remake or smth (more cope lol) but honestly we got so much out of those sprites, a LOT of sonic fan 2d animations use plenty of sonic battle sprites and I think that's so cool that it had that impact even as someone who didn't play the game like myself, it's influence is all over

These 5 minute discussions are addicting to watch. One thing that’s cool about Sonic’s heavy attack is when he leaps into the air after performing the move you can actually air dash out of it. I don’t know how useful it is, but a cool detail nonetheless.

this game deserves a remake, especially with Emerl coming back in SXSG but obviously this is 50 years ago before the Ark incident so Emerl's name wasn't Emerl yet until Sonic met it

My issue with Battle is how janky it feels to build Emerl in ways, especially when the story gives you fights that require more specific builds to get through it without wanting to rip your on head off. The art, character writing, and world are so good and there are a lot of things to adore about it

Sonic battle is such a wierd funky game , it fits perfectly in that era of sonic , I love how connected it was to every game and added new things to shadows lore it’s so awesome a game like this for this amount of love and passion , the story is amazing I love the interactions , except for Amy cuase my god why did they do her so dirty ?!? 😭 you can tell the sega of Jp writers found the whole “Amy ,thinks emeral is Sonic preparing for a kid” funny to themselves and didn’t care how people would see it , man she’s not bad but it’s just sad seeing how she got treated when everyone else gets much better treatment , I really hope we get a new battle game with a cell shaded battle style with sharp angles , it would be beautiful

I have some really strong critiques for Sonic Battle. The special attack system is game breakingly exploitable, stuff isn't balanced super well, it likes to pad out its runtime with pointless repeat fights to an annoying degree, But MAN, even so, still one of my favorite Sonic games. What it does for the characters and worldbuilding, how the art style is so different while still fundamentally referencing Uekawa's art as its base (the strength of the Riders intro too, it's its own thing while maintaining a Sonic specific look, something the Unleashed style failed to do by contrast, whole other HUGE topic), Emerl's character and story, the emotional ending. That's all just the game itself, none of which is even touching on the massive impact its sprites had on the animation/fan game community. It's not a game I can fully recommend to others because of its core issues (mainly the padding and balancing issues), but if that's stuff you can look past, definitely worth a full playthrough.

It's great to see you making videos again man! I really liked Sonic Battle back in the day. I should revisit it someday. You're right about how it doesn't need to be a serious fighter. Being on a handheld makes sense why they would make it more of a party fighter style.

I've never actually played Sonic Battle. The gameboy seemed fun enough, but it'd be so cool to have a remaster of this game ported to the Switch for the modern age. Customizability isn't something the Sonic series has done a lot of, so having a custom Emerl or having a character as your main or having a variety of arenas to choose from could be perfect for that. (And since Emerl is back in ppl's minds, it'd make sense as to where all that lore fits into place and where this Gizoid comes from. Just sayin)

I absolutely love Sonic Battle. This was at a time where it feels like Sega just abandoned projects that even got the slightest criticism. Honestly Sonic 06 was such a gigantic blow to the company, even if you don't think the game is that bad, that they STILL to this day are trying to recover from it rather then stick to the stuff that worked (And yes Battle came out in 03 but the seed of them just dropping projects with amazing ideas started there). Sure they will dance around the field of the SA games but "we can't go into that court!" is basically what I see. I know a lot of people don't like the SA game's but you can't say it didn't work. It worked amazingly. To me it feels like when they made a game in that era that got somewhat criticized it was like "THIS GAME IS BEING SOMEWHAT CRITICIZED! ABANDON! ABANDON!" Instead of being like "Hey we have something here, let's make this next one friggen amazing with the feedback we got!" All IMO anyways.

My only problem with Sonic Battle(aside from the bad u.s. translation) that it gets repetitive after a while. Defeat the same enemies over and over again. The only threat(aside from the challenging Last Story) is Chaos Gamma his copies because each time when he is defeated he is self destruct and can affect your health. Any other enemy is easy if you just have to defeat them and not play like one of Rouge's missions to avoid any attack. Those are a bit annoying. They had this cool Gerald memo idea here but completing the game once more just to see it is kind of not worth it.(still did it) What i love about Sonic Battle is it's world building. I would have been love to see Emerald Town in Sonic Prime instead of Green Hill once more. I don't even understand how they can call that show canon when characters like Cream and Vanilla is not exist yet they shown Gmerl(rebuild from Emerl's parts) who is ends up with Cream after Advance 3 credits. Also Sonic Heroes is contradict to Sonic Battle. People trying to fit the game in the timeline but i feel it's just a different continuity after Adventure 2 and Advance 2.

Most of this I agree with or at least follow the logic of. Though I want to point out that 2 Face Buttons, 2 Shoulder Buttons, Start AND Select is more inputs than Virtua Fighter relied on for most of its time in the limelight. Or Dead or Alive for that matter. It's also enough buttons to do Tekken, granted that the left punch right punch left kick right click layout might be far less comfortable on the GBA size... which might be why they went for the Kick Punch Tag Throw inputs instead for Tekken Advance.

@@MardiculousSadly, both of the first two franchises are currently dormant. Virtua Fighter is fairly well liked by the competitive scene and has hype tournaments , but commercially dead at the moment. There are murmurs that a new VF is in the works, but I think right now most play the most recent VF5 re-release. Dead or Alive mostly survived on its sex appeal. After extremely overpriced DLC in the previous game, and the most recent game attempting to clean up its reputation to seem more like a serious fighter, DoA's fighting games aren't making enough money for commercial viability. Tekken, on the other hand, is huge. Tekken 8 dropped a few months back to massive critical and commercial success and large sign up numbers in the major tournaments. This is on the back of Tekken 7 also being very successes through several years of constant support and DLC and having crossover characters from Street Fighter, The Walking Dead, and Final Fantasy. Kazuya, one of the series iconic characters, even made it into Smash Bros. Ultimate.
