😂 some of these comments legit made me laugh out loud. **** caveat to what I said ****** Sometimes fear can mean RUN AWAY and you should!!! Like swimming with crocodiles, probably not a great thing to pursue even tho it scares you. But starting a business? That’s great thing to try for if it scares you 😂

Taking it to an extreme there. He's not talking about laying with rattlesnakes. He's saying go up to the next level on the high dive. Get on the bike, go talk to her. Those are the types of things he means

I'm so glad for discovering John Allen a few years before. It's not only his brilliant Storytelling, it's also his mindset. He really seems to be a great Human being - kind, humble, creative, empathic, open- minded, funny... @@J8C5TLOL! Thankfully I've never found them. apparently we currently have a massive adult cockroach in bathroom between my brothers room sleeping in laundry. My sisters see it at night but I haven't seen it. Im disgusting to go inside the bathroom at night and day without thinking of the roach because I think it will appear behind the door when I least expecting it but I'm really the only capable sibling out of 5 to kill any bug. And we've always had roaches because of some refrigerator containing roaches or some non sense. That's annoying. Ever since I can remember I've always been scared disgusted of roaches specifically because of the emotional psychological trauma my uncle and father caused me. I've felt bee and wasp stings. They're ugly but I just man up and my testosterone takes the pain. What pokes the bear in me in my childhood hurt is a big roach existing in my house near me. And my parents always telling me it's not gonna hurt you it's harmless. I'm not the same like literally almost every human female in history who's scared of all bugs 🐛 for being female lol and I'm traumatized so the difference is justified but that doesn't make it go away I'll be stuck with this to blame my uncle father. For the rest of my existence until I die. What a blessing this is from those men I call family yay!

Live stuff is what your were terrified of? I think that facing that, like you did, made you really rise up! That last sentence will probably always resonate with me. And you mentioned, living up to what you tell your kids, is a huge part of what made YOU stronger (Imo) bc you're such a great father! And that speaks volumes. I have high anxiety and public speaking was never in the cards for me. So, I'm happy you were able to overcome that, and even if you still sometimes have troubles and fears. For a guy’s perspective, if you ever want to try something guaranteed to make your nuts shrivel up inside you like a frightened turtle, swimming with the crocs is it, especially when you hear the jaws slam shut right outside the cage. There are plenty of videos on KZbin showing how it operates.

100% what I’m thinking; he’s a good storyteller but he really needs to check in with someone if he thinks fear means that’s exactly what you should pick. Honestly, I love listening to the stories because I’m smart enough to stay my happy and safe ass at home and live vicariously. Lol, ain’t no way I’d ever go to 99.999999% of the places in MrBallen’s stories. I have enough anxiety trying to navigate this world. I don’t need to go snooping around any others.

Yeah. I fear oceans/deep water, but I'm also indifferent to confronting that fear. I do not and probably will not regret never going into deep water again. But with harmless things that are more about overcoming anxiety to build character and skills (like public speaking), I'm definitely more interested in doing and regret chances I didn't take to develop myself.

So THAT’S why I love Mr Ballen so much! Anne Radcliffe quote: “Terror and Horror are so far opposite that the former expands the mind and awakens the faculties to a high degree of life whereas the latter contracts, freezes and nearly annihilates them”. I’ve been writing my own book called “The Name-Taker” and when I think of an idea that terrifies me, I write it in my book. I take things that terrify me not as something to avoid, but a chance to write something provocative and meaningful. I take it as a chance to expand my mind and awaken my faculties. My man Mr Ballen knows what’s up.

My karate master said something similar when I was younger. When I was around 9 or 10 my friend and I were getting tested to be promoted from white to yellow belt. The week before our test my master asked us how we were feeling about it and we both said we were nervous and he said he was glad we felt that way because that showed him that we really wanted to do well in our test. I was very close with my master and he was like the grandpa I never had and I have countless memories like that with him and they've all been pretty painful to think about since he passed away. Thank you for saying this, I know how much truth this video holds but I never think about it because of the feelings I've accociated with it but this video made me realize how much I have to start thinking that way again

I was the same. I found a job where 50% of time I spent answering phone calls in a foreign language. After a few months of sweating profusely every day at work, making phone calls started to feel like a normal thing. So I moved to another of my fears - giving presentations. It took longer but again, after some time and one failed presentation when my brain froze, it became something that I actually really like to do and am now quite good at. Small steps and you will do fine :) give it time and allow yourself to make mistakes. People around will cheer you on - I do too! 😊

To get out of your comfort zone Is one of the best ways to grow as a person. I personally love public speaking. I even took the class twice in college. Not for any extra grade, just because I enjoyed it so much. I will say that it’s far easier for me to speak to a room of 100 people who I don’t know that to 10 people that I do know! It’s too intimate. Makes it too easy to care about what they think. Aside from the specifics of that particular issue, the main point here is to leave your comfort zone and do as many things as you do NOT Want to do that are of course not harmful! You’ll truly find yourself in those moments. What you’re really made of.

You're great at it John!!! Mine is singing in front of people, I love karaoke, yet I can't look at the people!! I used to do tap, ballet, and jazz, had to perform in front of lots, plus doing piano recitals!!! Hang in there, you're the best at "fear" 😊😊

Fear is the desire to protect. If you're afraid of something, it means something you value is being threatened. Fear just unveils what you value. It reveals desires you never knew you had.

I'm scared of putting my writing out there and of doing stand up comedy but always have been pulled to it. Oddly, I have no fear of public speaking but more of the reactions to me. Maybe I will try it one day.

If you're funny, RUN WITH THAT SH*T. Comedians are a select few. They can say whatever they want about whoever they want-bc it's their job to talk sh*t. And they provide much needed comic relief to the masses...

@@Jenessa-uu9ty Thanks, I've been told by friends I would kill if I tried telling some of my stories of my life on stage (no exaggeration needed for most) and I agree that most are that good but I worry I wouldn't crush it and if you can't do that it feels like you're wasting people's valuable time who would be there to see you but I think I might just be making excuses to not push myself.

@@TheOfficialTarynTots Go to open mike nights. The crowds know you're not getting paid and have low expectations; they won't be disappointed, though they still might boo. You wouldn't be wasting their time; they're there because they like seeing newcomers on stage.

@@FTOTHEW13 that's not really true. While I do think black women tend to be funnier than white women-I have a close girlfriend that is damn funny. That same girlfriend's children believe that *I* am the funniest person they know. Poor things. I'm not the 1 pondering a career doing stand up. 1 of my hobbies is sarcasm. I guess. I just like clowning people some.

John, many people fear public speaking over death 😬 I used to coach people in public speaking and one of my tactics is to have my client imagine that everyone in the audience is naked. It seems to help 😂

I know, right? The first time I heard him say this, I thought well, I'm afraid of falling into a woodchipper (thanks Fargo) and I really don't think confronting that fear would improve my life in any meaningful way. Would probably make it worse, imho. I wish he'd find a better way to phrase this bit of advice.

It's probably the most widespread fear among humans. It's a terrifying thing. It makes sense from an evolutionary point of view: if you "fail" at it, your whole "tribe" could go against you and expel you from the group, which would mean almost certain death. Or I'd you really passed them off or scared them they could just kill you outright.
