@@JosephCarlsonAfterHours Shopify has a way bigger market to tackle. And you are comparing apples to oranges. The entire analytics market is capped at 180b as of 2020 Gartner data. There is no way that Snowflake fills the needs of more than 40% of the entire datalake/DW industry. You have databricks, all of the equivalent services from the public vendors, on-premise use cases as well. Moreover, big data in real time is not good in Snowflake. There are latency problems, and being SaaS solution, it is not cheaper at all than the rest of the players. Also, it is not even fully a finished product. What I mean is that in this industry there is no one size fits most. The use cases are too many and too specific. Every player has its use case in fact. It is an awsome solution (otherwise I would not work on it). It just is not worth 40% of the market of data repositories.

@druiz0123 жыл бұрын
10% margins seem kind of low no? That's almost as low as manufacturing... you think of Microsoft, Google, Amazon (with the AWS side of the business) they have had higher margins than that... now if it was 20% margins that would be enticing. Also how much would their margins increase as they scale? That's what I would like to know. You figure operating costs shouldn't go up as much you scale right?

Surprising pick Joseph! Very bold... I looked into Snowflake a while ago, I like the business and the idea, but I did not invest because of some concerns: 1) What will be stopping Amazon to crush Snowflake? Betting on little fishes in a shark tank is dangerous 2) The amazing growth in revenue is matched by the incredible growth in how much money they are losing: negative earnings went from -178 mil, -348, -539. When they can make 1 dollar without losing 2, I will be happier. 3) Valuation, valuation, valuation, valuation. You are paying a random high-schooler 10 million bucks a year because he could be the next Lebron James. 4) They went from 38.2 mil shares to 295ish.. that's insane and disrespectful to investors

How much do you consider valuation? Obviously it's not enough to buy great companies unless you buy at reasonable prices. I'd be curious to see if you've run a DCF or similar analysis because 55x NTM revenue seems a little unreasonable. I feel like there's a lot of assumptions embedded in the current valuation, and if they don't execute to perfection over the next decade growing top line 50%+ and margins, returns will be non-existent. Similar to a PLTR where it's only a value of they can grow 30%+ CAGR for 10 years and expand margins. Interested to hear your thoughts, thanks.
@JosephCarlsonAfterHours3 жыл бұрын
Morningstar has ran discounted cash flow analysis. They predicted 55% annualized revenue growth over the next 5 years. They think based on that the company is trading at fair value (their fair value estimate is $10 below current price). I’m not ignoring valuation. It’s a core part of my research. The professionals at Morningstar also think the company is trading at a reasonable valuation today.

When evaluating high-growth companies, I prefer to focus on the gross profit growth rather than the revenue (revenue growth is no good if the company has to spend more than it makes in order to increase its revenue). On my stock spreadsheet, I have a column that shows the Price/Sales divided by growth percentage (a bit like a proxy for a PEG value). Based on this metric, NET is the most expensive at 1.3, followed by PLTR at 0.8, SNOW 0.45 and CRM 0.4. I don't have MSFT and ADBE on that sheet as they can be evaluated by the usual PE and PEG values but using this metric, SNOW really doesn't look all that expensive.

@@edwinlee2343 It's a saying that gets passed around cybersecurity circles. It's a joke since most people think of cloud computing as extremely secure and by definition it is less secure, because you have to trust who ever has access to the computers where your data is being stored, but it's here to stay and necessary for particular reasons. The safest way to store data digitally is to keep it on a machine that isn't connected to any network (the internet most of all) that a person has to manually interface with that you keep on site.

So the stock is valued at 70x FCF expected in 2029? Hard pass. Great company. Way overvalued. The risk-reward in this one isn't worth it. Considering its multiples, it could be a -90% stock in the next recession. Maybe then I'll buy. Great video by the way.

I have only one objection against entering SNOW at this valuation: at some point this company like many other unicorns will hit a market crash within the next 5 years. Major crashes come after long bull markets, so Snow will shed prices like crazy when fear will strike the hedges.
@GrindThisGame3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Downside protection is small when paying such high multiples.
@TheStork19813 жыл бұрын
If Snowflake was making 1B $ in Free Cash Flow NOW, it would be valued NOW as high as PayPal... and PayPal is already expensive! How can you pay 70B for a company that will make 1B in 5 years? In my opinion, great company but very poor investment.
Why bother with SNOW when you can buy AMZN which is a cloud an ecommerce beast and fair valued?

No. Yes, MongoDB is another repository but is not cloud native. Diferent use case in fact. The database type is very different.
I’m not sure how reasonable it is to invest based on the hunch that Snowflake will be trading at over 150x FCF 10 years from now. I don’t see any conceivable margin of safety there, in fact the downside seems absolutely tremendous even in optimistic scenarios.

I like the stock but it seems way too expensive..makes PTON seem like a steal at similar growth rates (ofc these will probably slow down as the pandemic ends)

Yep - investors are certainly pricing peloton with lower expectations than snowflake. In all fairness, there’s really not many companies growing as fast as peloton at its current price.

What about competition? Do they have moat? Too expensive without moat. By 2029, there will be at least a dozen companies doing the same thing
It's too far out for me. This company can 10x it's revenues and still be overvalued. A lot can change in 10 years.

Hi Joseph. First of all thanks god that I found a video for you for this company. But, please allow me to disagree with you here. In my opinion, this is a long shot: 1 Billion cash flow. Let’s say also 1 billion in earnings in 2029. Even with P/E of 50. This will be the company’s market cap of today.
Seems like an archetypical hype stock. Are you an expert in cloud computing? Are you relying on your circle of competence or on reddit posters? Can the company produce enough cash over the next 5 years to justify its evaluation? (f**k no) So don't buy it. Keep it on your list and wait for it to go on sale if you are so inclined. What would pobrai do?
