This aversion to nomads has driven me crazy for years because they are lumping us in with problematic groups who contribute nothing and leave filth and destruction in their wake. I have been FT in my SUV for exactly one year now. Even before going FT, this is how I traveled for weeks and months at a time. Wherever we go, we are spending money on groceries, restaurants, services, gas, lodging/camping occasionally, entertainment, tolls, entrance fees, etc., etc. There are all kinds of ways we bring money into the local economies we travel through and/or stay in, money that many communities desperately need and depend on. Yes, there are people out there who make it hard for the rest of us, but I think the majority of us are respectful and couteous of the areas we visit. And if it's our legally claimed state of residency, there shoulfd be no distinctions and should have all the same rights as anyone else. How is it any different than people who keep residences in different states? Lots of people who aren't labeled nomads live more months elsewhere than in their state of residency. By making this more difficult for houseless people (whether by choice or circumstances), they are going to create far more problems for themselves, especially as more and more people become unhoused due to lack of affirdable housing and home-buying prices that are out of reach. Everywhere I go, businesses are suffering and closing for lack of employees and the reason for that is because people can't afford to live where they work and also can't afford to commute. It's an endless Catch-22! This country needs to figure this stuff out and put a stop to all the greed because this is all going to get worse until then. Making things more difficult for nomads and everyone just creates more problems and forces people to be dishonest. It's all so infuriating!

Brooke, we have domicile in SD and our driver license has PMB stamped on it which we got in 2023 so now we are in AZ for at least a year maybe more and wanted to purchase a shotgun just for shooting clays and having fun but denied because of the PMB, so it’s not worth having this service as a Nomad if it is not recognized as a home base address. The only benefit was to have no taxes but if you pay a yearly service fee for the PMB and you are not recognized for anything anywhere else in the state, what’s the point? I totally agree with you, plus the PMB we use outside Rapid City is not all that…

There are 8 states with no state income taxes. For people in my age group there are also a number of states that do have income tax, but don’t tax pensions, 401k income, or social security, so they aren’t limited to 8 states. I would pick a state where you either spend part of the year, or are nearby. For older people, some states have better healthcare than others and saving thousands on income taxes only to spend it on expensive healthcare is a fail. I also think owning property is a good idea in whatever state, even if you only pass through a couple times per year. I was watch several KZbin channels at the beginning of the pandemic and a lot of nomadic people were basically kicked out of a lot of places when everything shut down. I have doubts about it ever happening the same way again, but I like having a home base that I could go to if I had to, or just because I like being there for part of the year.

FYI, the initial reason South Dakota decided to allow nomads to pretend to live there was to artificially inflate the U.S. Census to give them more representatives - and influence - in Congress. They really do not expect nomads wandering around Arizona to vote in their local elections, especially if you do not share their ultra-conservative leanings. They do not care about the money you spend at SD businesses to forward your mail or the sales tax you sped during your one day "residency" every five years. Ditto for your tags and license. Not a real revenue cash cow. You should also monitor your insurance policies because more and more companies are dropping "PMB" addresses because they know the insurance rate they are giving you for a Sioux Falls "address" isn't going to apply in a situation where you are driving 363 days a year in California. Your safest bet is ALWAYS a street address of friends or family - WITH their permission, of course.

I'm sorry that you have to spend so much money, but you're doing the right thing. However, that said, would you consider buying a couple of unimproved acres of land in a state with similar benefits and no state income tax for that same 10 to 15k? That way, you'd have the outlay one year, but only property taxes in future years, and that would give you a 'physical address' within that state. It's worth looking into as an option for the future when your driver's license expires. Wow, South Dakota. You just lost your cash cow from Nomads by eliminating their residency!

Several western states are suing the feds to take back federal lands and place them under state control. The trend in the west has been for several states to sell off public lands and oil leases to large corporations and wealthy ranchers. Taxpayers who already paid for the infrastructure: roads, fences, buildings, will never benefit from these lands once they're transferred away from the feds. It's a total cash grab by the states; they're not too worried about camping. Luckily it looks like these lawsuits might fail.

At first, while listening to your video I was indignant about South Dakota's stance. That was, until you kept talking. The main reason that SD allowed these nomadic addresses was to pad the state rolls. The states gets federal funds for each resident. SD, not being very populated benefited greatly from these nomads. Now that I see they are being specific with their laws I get it. After listening to your diatribe, especially the bit where you alluded , without really coming out and saying it, that South Dakotans aren't as "well traveled" ie. cultured, I don't blame SD for limiting your voting rights there. YOU do not represent the "culture" of SD. I'm thinking Cali might be more your vibe. The SD "culture" was good enough for you while saving a buck, but now that they don't subscribe to your political sensibilities, well gee whiz, looks like you need to go to a state that does, which also in turn will suck you dry of every dime they can and then some. It is arrogant of you to believe that you should have any say in local and state level elections when you don't even really live there, much less own land. This mentality is the reason why Trump won. You and people like you have only yourselves to blame. I'm a nomad and started back in summer of 2020 as well. I personally kept my home state for my personal address. I don't mind paying my fair share of taxes including income. I affect the outcome of local and state elections of the state that I have the deepest ties to. I would never be so arrogant as to assume that I have the same rights as the typical resident of SD while literally just paying for a physical residence post box. Grow up. The world does not revolve around you, much less South Dakota.

On the flip side... My daughter in TX is paying the property taxes that pay for the libraries, hospitals, and first responders Educational opportunities. So, how are you paying your share of these? using Brooks experience... of $150 library card., on a very modest 2BE 1 bth home her library tax is more Tham $150.oo a year. go figure.......

How do you know if a state allows a van as a valid residence? I used a pmb for awhile in different state and they didn't ask many questions.

Hi Brooke! I'm glad you're able to move. Residents there won't be able to, for the most part. They got scared into voting against their own best interests. Like immigrants are being bussed to a deep red state to vote. Makes zero sense, but people get scared and want to start limiting resistance. I'm glad you're taking care of you. The Healthcare would have made me look elsewhere, but I totally get the library card being the LAST STRAW. Seriously! What harm could you possibly do with a library card!? Can't even read a book, watch a movie, use the internet... eff those guys!

AnotherUtuber vaguely gave information about where she bought land. Next thing she new she had 2 stalkers. Scared her 😢. I think that you too have learned this lesson. travel safe.

I luckily learned this lesson very early on. I’ve had multiple incidents and I don’t play around at all anymore

So they're happy to take your money in taxes and fees, but they don't want you voting ? Didn't we fight a Revolutionary War about that ? "No taxation without representation" ? (I have to say none of this shocks me, considering the political climate in South Dakota...)

SD isn’t very welcoming to nomadic life. What states are allowing domicile rights? Take care and stay safe.

I totally understand. I'm not a nomad, but at this point I feel it's hard to be a resident of the USA period!!
