She mentioned "AirBNB", but actually Japan has always had AirBNB-like little family ryokans that one can stay at. I often used them decades ago when I was young and traveling in Japan. The family would often rent out a room in their residence for hotel-like stays. Even though the stays were enjoyable, I didn't use them all the time because it always felt like I was a guest in someone's house so sometimes I preferred just staying at an inexpensive hotel where I didn't feel obligated to keep to certain hours when going out at night and returning.

In traditional homes in both Korea and Japan, a sunken kitchen would be in the back of the house, and they'd build the ventilation for the oven and stove in a way that ran under the floors in a similar fashion. However this form of housing was far above the dreams of the peasantry who made up the supermajority of the population. we tried one in Nagano, costs twice as a regular hotel, insulation of the thin wood and paper windows and thin walls means it was so freaking cold the heater running full blast can only heat small spot directly in front of it. If you are not used to sitting or laying on the floor, watch out, I'm moderately fit in my 30s but every thing being on the floor start being a strain at the end of the 5 days stay. I suppose it would have been better in warmer season, but in deep winter it sucked.
