If it is a katana classified as such according to japanese law, that is excempt from weapons law, because it is a registered art piece even though it is a real sword. Not katana swords are prohibited, while not weapon replicas also exist.

This is everything I've ever wanted. The lifestyle and aesthetic of the old world like that beautiful garden, traditional houses, home made everything from food to the clothes, and the quiet country life. But I also want the benefits of the new world like toilets, antibiotics, low infant mortality rate, and not having to worry about basic survival. This is literally the dream.

We did in Kyoto. The owner was a 100 year old man who screamed at the guests if they went out at night. Was met at the door by a couple of Brits who were checking out after a 1 night stay because the old man freaked out every time they left to go sightseeing. She mentioned "AirBNB", but actually Japan has always had AirBNB-like little family ryokans that one can stay at. I often used them decades ago when I was young and traveling in Japan. The family would often rent out a room in their residence for hotel-like stays. Even though the stays were enjoyable, I didn't use them all the time because it always felt like I was a guest in someone's house so sometimes I preferred just staying at an inexpensive hotel where I didn't feel obligated to keep to certain hours when going out at night and returning.

There are a LOT of AirBNBs in Japan, where you rent the whole place, all to yourself, and what's crazy is they're often very cheap. There seems to be NO correlation between cost & value, when it comes to AirBNB in Japan.

In traditional homes in both Korea and Japan, a sunken kitchen would be in the back of the house, and they'd build the ventilation for the oven and stove in a way that ran under the floors in a similar fashion. However this form of housing was far above the dreams of the peasantry who made up the supermajority of the population. I appreciated how the K-drama "Kingdom" didn't shy away from that kind of class consciousness when showing how most people lived in huts in contrast to the sheer luxury which some certainly had

I've been to Japan 4 times in my life. AirBNB is the way to go. Just: Get one AirBNB for the entire trip. Don't try and slice and dice with schedules. Even if you're going to go away for a few days, -- just get the one AirBNB and stick with it. It's worth the few more dollars. ALSO: There is NO correlation between PRICE, and VALUE, when it comes to AirBNBs. I've paid a ton of money for just terrible places (up several flights of stairs, poor neighborhood, few amenities,) and dirt cheap for entire houses that were just WONDERFUL.

The first examples of heated flooring were on the Korean peninsula, dating back 5000 BC. So it actually is a very ancient concept, just not in the western world lol

I never stay in a regular hotel while in Japan. I stay in capsule hotels. A fifth of the price, free laundry service of undergarments and optional laundry service of all clothes, reading rooms, massage rooms, hot tubs, sauna space, and snacks all included.😅

I got to stay in Nagano & in Kyoto. the one in Nagano was my favorite bc it was a half traditional half modern apartment conversion. I never saw a maiko or geiko, while in Kyoto- but the night before I was set to leave the country, I got to wander around near the miyagawa-cho area for a bit. It was such an experience. It was super cold & rainy but I think it helped to keep the memory more fresh even years later. I met a really nice older couple who were super cool & showed me where to go eat that wasn't a touristy place. Also met some jerk tourists from Australia. they were super loud, pointing everywhere & reaching over people. Really weird, unaware, self important ppl.

Hostels, hotels and air bnb are all great options in japan. They’re all different and its great to switch it up. I specifically if you’re younger and/or like to meet new people the hostels are fun and affordable.

the ryokan I stayed in in kyoto was an incredible experience. I got an entire guest house to myself. The toilets were public and going outside in a snowstorm in january to go to the bathroom was rough, but I still loved it so much.

we tried one in Nagano, costs twice as a regular hotel, insulation of the thin wood and paper windows and thin walls means it was so freaking cold the heater running full blast can only heat small spot directly in front of it. If you are not used to sitting or laying on the floor, watch out, I'm moderately fit in my 30s but every thing being on the floor start being a strain at the end of the 5 days stay. I suppose it would have been better in warmer season, but in deep winter it sucked.
