I think I forgot to mention that I ordered a RWD Y. I have since scheduled a delivery date for the 19th. Walk-around and driving impression videos to follow. Maybe even some accessory fitting videos too.

Congratulations on the new Model Y (when it arrives) - I'm certain you will love it. We are soon to be entering into the second year with our Model Y, and to be honest, this is by far the best car we have owned for our purposes.

Thanks. Yes it depends on your circumstances. The Model 3 is an amazing car but if the Y had been available here in Australia back in 2021 I would have bought one then. We had no idea how long it would be until Tesla released them here.

Thank you Bob. Yes we drive on the correct side of the road 😜. I am glad you have found my channel useful. Please let me know if you have any questions. You won’t regret making the switch to an EV. It doesn’t have to be a Tesla but they do a much better job then most other brands. It really depends on what your used too.

We did the same, moved from a model 3 to a Y. If we didnt have kids I'd happily have stayed with the Y as the 3 is more fun to drive. The space in the Y is hard to argue with though! Forgot to say, the actual unicorn 3 was the late 2021 batch with the 3D6 motor AND the 60kWh LFP battery. That was the combination we had in the model 3.
@notinthemanual
@notinthemanual Жыл бұрын
Yes I agree totally. The 3 is a 1.8t go cart. It’s been fun and I don’t know how I’ve avoided a speeding ticket! I am getting more practical in my old age though 😂. Yes, definitely the late 2021 model was the more well known unicorn but these were also considered a unicorn model by some because of the performance motor. That extra 0.5 second 0-100 time makes a big difference to the acceleration feel. It will take some getting used the Y but I think my wife’s motion sickness will be reduced.

Is there a way of confirming it's a unicorn when looking in the second hand market?
@notinthemanual
@notinthemanual Жыл бұрын
@@TechnoMonkeyFarm I’m not sure of the exact change over date to the 60kWh but it was approximately November 2021 manufacture date. It was towards the end of 2020 that Shanghai started producing the 3 with LFP. China built cars will have an VIN number starting with LRW. First half of 2021 Shanghai build dates would be the safest bet. Sorry I don’t have anything more definite. Other way would be to estimate the range at 100%. For the 55kWh cars it will be somewhere between 400-415km.

@@TechnoMonkeyFarm Oh I forgot that there is info built into the VIN. 10th digit is year 2021 is M. Also motor type is the 8th digit and mine is J (3D6) and the 60kWh Model 3 is S (3D7) motor. First 11 digits of my VIN are LRW3F7FJ4MC.

Thanks for another interesting and informative video Matt. I have a 2022 M3 rwd with the 60kwh battery. Performance is great. Mine doesn't have the ultrasonic sensors and Tesla vision really doesn't cut it for me, despite several SW updates it's disappointing. Measurements are inaccurate. I don't rely on it at all. Often it will say park assist is degraded, prob when there is rain or dirt on the rear camera. I can't see it improving on the M3. I hope your MY doesn't disappoint too much regarding park assist but be prepared!!

Thanks Nick. I appreciate you watching. Sometimes I’m not sure if the video will be interesting to anyone or not. I’ve been surprised by all the comments today! Your not alone thinking Tesla vision was a major step backwards. All Model Y coming into Australia still have ultrasonics. I meant to mention that in the video but I’ll do a walk around the car after I pick it up. It was another reason why I thought now was a good time to upgrade.

That's great to hear. I bet they have to fit them for you in order to meet Australia's legislative requirements. I hope they don't put ultrasonic sensors back for Highland and leave those of us without high and dry. We'll see I guess.

Hey, happy for you moving to a LR Y, although I'm gonna miss the degradation tests as I have the same SR LFP 3 and it was a good marker. I tested the LR Y and it feels much faster than the 0.6 seconds 0-100 difference on paper, mainly because it's AWD and doesn't struggle to find traction as much as our RWD 3s do. However, the 3 still takes corners better and the seating position contributes to it. The LR Y will be much more stable on snow / ice though, which I believe is a major reason to upgrade in places with a proper winter - I've been able to somewhat spin the rear of the 3 RWD in corners and that could happen by accident in a bad place if the road is slippery. The Y LR with it's AWD has been rock solid on the same test.
@notinthemanual
@notinthemanual Жыл бұрын
Hi Kamen. Sorry if I wasn’t clear but I’m getting the RWD Model Y with a 60kWh LFP. I can’t justify the extra spend for a LR. I don’t need AWD or the extra range. In regards to degradation tests I still have access to a Model 3 built around the same time as mine. It has pretty much exactly the same degradation figures as mine. I will definitely be monitoring that car and making content about it too!

@@notinthemanual Sorry, I wasn't aware SRs came with premium audio/interior now and assumed it based on the description. If you get the Blade battery, this one will be interesting as they are rumoured to be getting 170kw at very high SOC. Anyway, the SR Y is a bit slow for me, and the consumption difference between 3 and Y becomes substantially bigger at the higher speeds that we have in Europe (140-150kmh is not uncommon here) due to aerodynamics, so the range is a bit on the short side for us as well. From what I've seen about Australia you would be doing well though.

Another great video Matt. I'm going with someone who i referred to pick up the same spec Y next week that you've ordered, but have to say the 3 is > than a Y 🙂. Brings a smile to my face every time i drive it. But in saying that I will most likely get a LR Y next time, and go to the dark side LOL, even though wifey and i think the Y looks like a lady beetle.

Thanks Joe. That’s great, enjoy the delivery! I do agree that the 3 is more fun. I have had 2 years of fun driving the 1.8t go-kart 😜 I’m surprised I’ve avoided a speeding ticket so far. My practical self has won over and the Y will just suit us better. The Y is best looked at from the angle in my thumbnail. It’s definitely built for aerodynamics, not looks. I prefer the dark coloured stealth look so with the black wheels, dark window tints and chrome delete it will look quite nice even if with the duck bill front and buggish looks 😂. I was very tempted to change to the LR after seeing the Tesla video on engineering the Y. It looks very capable off road! I just don’t need the range, performance or traction right now. By the time you get the LR it will most likely have the LMFP battery chemistry. I think Nickel & Cobalt will be reserved for the high energy density needs like Semi and Cybertruck.

Interesting point about the higher camera position in the MY. I have a 2023 M3 RWD with the 60kW LFP and AMD Ryzen processor which I bought after watching some of your videos. I love the car but if I was buying now, I too would also go for the MY based on practicality. I understand that the new MY cars are currently a mix of HW3 and HW4. I would definitely hold out for a HW4 with the 4K cameras being this close. Good luck and looking forward to future videos.
@notinthemanual
@notinthemanual Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. I think I’m being too hopeful with the camera position but I’m keen to see if I notice any improvement. I ordered the car well before the news of HW4. I have mixed feelings on this and seriously thought about cancelling my order. There is always a reason to hold out buying a Tesla as they make so many improvements but in the meantime you are missing out on driving an already great car. I feel AP is being limited by software right now and not hardware. As I mentioned I think AP worked 100% better before vision only. The hardware is only used if the software needs it. Long term it will catch up but Tesla are now even looking beyond HW4. It may even end up having major issues. I decided that it’s better the devil you know in regards to this right now and the current image quality is good enough for me and the Y out of Shanghai is still coming with ultrasonics. I’ll wait until HW4 has been tried and proven with full functionality for a couple of years. By that time the Y will probably have had a major refresh too and I will have had a much nicer car to drive around in the meantime.

That makes sense with the voltage. I hadn’t put that much thought into it yet. It uses CATL prismatic cells so I assumed LFP but I wasn’t able to find a definite specification on the chemistry. Li-ion is just the family of battery chemistries that use lithium in the cathode chemistry. LFP is still a li-ion battery. I will do some research on this later as I’m curious now.
