I’m actually about to do the opposite of what you are doing I have the sigma 18-35 and yes amazing lens for sure, But one thing people seem to forget is it’s a photo lens not a cine lens.Since I shoot 99% video and in a controlled manner, I want a longer focus pull. I have a gimbal with a wireless follow focus and after many attempts with the sigma , the focus pull is very short just like with all photo lens, where the rokinon is litttle smaller and wieght and length and has a longer focuse pull alowing me to rack focus much more smoother.. I shoot on a gh5 and already have medabones ef speedbooster for full frame , so. Allowing an extra stop of light and lil wider fov with rokinon ef full lens kit If I could afford it I would just keep sigma and all others but the sigma is heavy and big and most of my shooting is on gimbal most of the time

Hey, so I have my Rokinon DS set in the mail on the way, and I’m wondering if you had good sharpness when stopped down to T2.8 on the lens while having the effect of T2.0 on your image. Everyone says they’re not sharp wide open but retain sharpness at T2.8 so I thought a good hack would be using a speed booster so I could get the shallow DOF while retaining the T2.8 sharpness, or does it now work like that?

I will soon switch in the Other direktion, Form Sigma to rokinon. In my Case that has nothing to do with zoomrange. My sigma is also a prime. But I have a problem with focusing and you will probably experience the same problem. the thing is because these lenses are for stills the focusring dosnt work with a followfocus-system. I'm not quite sure how the sigma-focus-technology work but it has somethig to do with the speed how fast you pull the focus. the endrsault is that when i make marks on the Focus-System, after some fousing in the one or other Direktion the marks are not in the right place anymore. it is also not easy to calibrate the Focus-System because the sigma focusring has no hard stops.

Lens sharpness doesn't even really matter. 6k resolution will be softened in post because of how clinical and sharp it is. Peter jackson said on the first hobbit 5k resolution hurt the film. It was too clear and made the props look fake. So for the 2nd and 3rd installations they soften the footage. Film is soft. Softness is organic. Get a 4k or 6k resolution camera and shoot it through some vintage glass like nikon AIS lenses. Sharpness would only be a concern during the canon 5D and 7D fake 1080p era.
@sempahriders5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I don’t like too digital looking video. Too sharp and it takes away the filmic looks. That’s why most people use promist filter.
@Moviesauce5 жыл бұрын
Sharpness and resolution aren't the same but are often conflated. More resolution tends to make a smoother more natural image (like more polygons make more realistic less jagged 3D images). Ugly sharpness is usually a result of bad compression and processing on lesser cameras. Promist is for those kinds of cameras.
@Arcanineisthebest4 жыл бұрын
Film is extremely forgiving, it has a lot of percieved sharpness because of the way the grain interacts with the footage. No, you can't achieve the same effect with overlays or with filmconvert or with resolve, Hollywood uses $400K equipment to analyze every single frame and apply certain amounts of grain depending on the luma values. With digital sensors, to get that ultra-clean look that digital is so good with, micro-contrast and what's called "3D pop" is very, very important. And it's irrelevant to the resolution of the footage. A canon 50mm f1.8 will always look flat no matter what resolution you're shooting at, but a Cooke prime will soften the out-of-focus background while creating a lot of pleasant contrast on any texture that is in focus...

The sigma f1.4 lenses are so easy and fast to use when you have to run and gun, but for my close up documentary style interviews, I always reach for my Samyang 85mm T1.5 cinema lens and my gh5, The focal length becomes 170mm which blows the background away, and allows me to get tight in on the talent without them feeling uncomfortable.

Interesting review. I recently bought the Rokinon Cine DS Series.Your review on them had a high impact on me. I'm pretty happy with the results that i'm getting. Previously I had just the 24-105 and 50mm, both Canon Lenses. Just theses days I was having this conversation about carring less equipment to the job and how zoom lenses make the job easier sometimes. Altough I like the way prime lenses look like. I always get a feel of a cleaner scene with them. Now I see you switching to Sigmas (which is a lens that i love but don't have). I'm looking foward the see the results in the future and how your work will evolve with them. Regards from Brazil

I have both sets. But I discovered that I love zooms for cinematography, because there are certain types of dynamic shots you can only get with a zoom, especially one with a longer range. For example, there was a classic reverse zoom in Barry Lyndon during the duel scene which started really close and then pulled out to reveal a wide landscape. I think that classic scene was shot on a Cooke Varotal 25-250mm. Shots like that started making me rethink the idea of only shooting on primes. The Sigma 2x range is not really long enough for any kind of dynamic effects, so I don't think I will be upgrading to the Sigma cine lenses from the still versions. Especially since the optical quality is the same (if not a little sharper). And if I had to ramp the exposure during a shot I could pull it off with a variable ND. I will probably keep my Rokinon's and use them for stills photography. I would rather save a little and invest in something like the Angenieux EZ lenses or the Zeiss 21-100. Both of which look great, are light, compact, and have a lot going on in the character department as well as fantastic optical performance and a zoom range that will allow you to be a little more creative. Upgrading and investing in gear is so tough these days tho, because there are so many options. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and tests. Happy shooting and great video. -Alex IG: Pixelator_photo Twitter: @stealing_shots

I think if you tested these lenses wide open, you would be able to see the difference. Hence why we get fast apeture lenses. It's how they resolve detail - corner to corner, with minimal CA, minimal vignetting that puts the sigma ahead of the rokinon DS. Stopped down to 2.8 the differences start to diminish. At 5.6 they are wash. Performance is comprable. On the wide end though, the DS don't perform nearly as well as the sigmas. Especially the wider lenses.

Depends on what's most important to you. Image wise you're good with either the Sigma or Samyang 35. Depending on the series of Rokinon/Samyang lens, you may be looking at full manual operation versus electronic aperture and autofocus on the Sigma, so that's a consideration. If you need more of a zoom range, the 18-35 is a good option. I'm also a big fan of the Sigma 24-35 F2 as well. for a full frame camera like the red weapon that would be a great lens. on super 35 I find 24mm to not be wide enough. however for super 35 (aps-c) there isn't a lot of good budget options. so far the best is the canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS (which is ef-s lens, and noisy af motors, focus throw isn't great). You buy a lens based on your needs and budget. rather than the idea of what brand is better. You can get more primes for cheaper with the Rokinon. Moviesauce I'm really looking forward to that, thanks! Recently bought a GH5 and the Sigma zoom lens seemed great for it. Keep up the great content!

New lens video. Didn't really talk about MFT cameras/lenses like you're in the market for, so all of those lenses will work/look differently with GH5 kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWiyf6htjZuslas

rokinons are great bang for the buck and sharp! If you want cine lenses. skip the toy cine lenses like xeen and sigma. Rent cook lenses. you'll get all the bitches!

Sigma & Rokinon are not the dame at all.. sigma are much better and beautifully sharper, Rokinon gives bit of a weird greenish & dirty look

Thanks. I dont put a ton of production value into my reviews because it's a side thing for me. Got a commercial production company I run full time. It's just a quick way for me to share my thoughts.
