So the caveman says to Daniel Boone , “ Man , why are you using all these fancy sharp metal saws and hatchets and axes ? Be a real man and use rocks and sticks like I did ! “ It’s all just a matter of perspective. Shawn , I think it’s incredible what you do , regardless of the type tools you use. To me the point of your channel is to take more responsibility for yourself and rely on others less. The success of your channel speaks for itself.

Shawn, You are fully justified in making use of power tools in order to get things moving and to make best use of all assistance that you receive. I don't think that any one of us watching from afar has not been amazed at your skills but we are also looking forward to seeing that greenhouse completed and in use and to see your new cabin under construction. Don't hold back from using mechanical assistance with that development also.

Being true to yourself is really all that matters, anyone that would like cast judgment against you for the tools you choose or not use has way too much time on their hands. The older I get, good useful tools that make my work easier to Accomplish is what matters. We’re only getting older. I find it takes longer to recover from really physically demanding days as work lately. Good stuff as always. Thanks.

Talking of apple trees reminds me of my favourite job as a teen ages and that was picking apples. They weren’t dwarf trees back then. We had these old wooden ladders and baskets with hooks. The owners liked me so much, they kept me on after the picking was done to drive the tractor to tidy the orchard, putting equipment away, etc.. My dad got permission from my high school to start a few weeks late so I could make the extra money. Best job in the world for a kid. My least favourite was catching chickens. Lol.

Yep 65yo from England couldn't agree more. My other half says he'd hire or buy a small tractor with a front end loader to help you establish your site. Once your homestead is established with a roof over your head. You could sell it and buy some chickens. You have to start over so do what you need to do to get back on your feet again. What ever works man. We love watching your progress.

Shawn, your buildings won't deter the moose if they get it in their head to help themselves to your plants. I've had moose bed down within 25 yards of my porch, pass by my house within feet of my deck and back door, and nose around my woodshed and firepit. Not much scares them. I just enjoyed watching them. :)

You are doing a great job Shawn! I love watching all this new cabin build come together. BTW...I have a deer fence around my cottage garden. The deer cannot judge the wire so they don't try to jump it. Never have.

I say this with great respect, I have watched you build with your bare hands. It was incredible, I know you can do it. This is Self Reliance 2.0, this is a post pandemic and you will have your family with you more frequently. Please build a place that is your dream, suits your families needs. Please put yourself first, your viewers are not going away. (One day maybe you can have land somewhere and have excursions with people who really want that experience.) Give yourself and your wife, quality of life and the gift of time. Only the simplist of minds will take issue with a bit of efficiency from power tools.

Imho, using power tools doesn't make you less self reliant as long as you know and proved to yourself (and not to us) that you can go back to hand tools anytime if needed. I think it is precisely because you are comfortable with traditional tools that you can really fully appreciate the benefits of modern power tools. I really appreciate that you always question your choices, no matter how obvious they sound. You can see many people in the comments saying you don't have to justify anything when I feel like, if I understand your approach correctly, it's not about explaining yourself to us but rather self reflexion, sharing your philosophy and ensuring you remain consistant without being dogmatic. I think that's a great lesson that we can all learn from and apply to our lives and that goes way beyond building stuff in a forest. Self reliance is not only about materialistic considerations but also the ability to think critically by yourself instead of following trends and conventions without questioning them first. As always, outstanding job and thanks for sharing all of it with us ! Much love from France :)

Shawn, Peace & joy. I just got a chance to sit and watch this episode of what I like to call 'My Guilty Pleasure'. I thought about your title and wanted to respond. I know that you would prefer to use more basic tools and methods for all that you do, but the way I figure it, you have been making choices not based solely on what YOU want but you are considering your family. In this uncertain time with so many things going crazy (in my opinion) your desire to establish a safe productive home, for them and you, means making the best use of the tools and resources at your disposal. I am just grateful that you share with us your thought processes and your beliefs. You have inspired this grey haired granny to become more motivated and productive. Thank you. *U* Kathleen

I wouldn’t worry about using power tools, after what you built previous to this in your other homestead, is proof enough that you don’t have to justify yourself. I’d say it’s using your initiative and having respect for your friend who is helping you 😊

Great surprise of a short video on a Tuesday! Tools make a hard job easier, you don't need to be apologetic for using them. A tool is no good if you don't know how to use it and do anything well done with it. Love the planting of trees, Some would say you should have brought in a CAT D8 and leveled the place clean of all vegetation! That is how we end up with a sea of shingled roof tops as far as the eye can see! You have so many projects on going at the same time. Keeps us wondering what is next!

Use as many power tools you can get your hands on that way you can save your body and enjoy the fruits of your labor for many years instead of being crippled with bad joints from beating the hell out of yourself
