Is making life decisions based almost solely on what makes me happy setting me up for failure? Maybe. But I don't think so. And even if it it, I'm cool with that.

Amen!! The nagging, criticism, demands of exes and deceased relatives are still ringing in my ears, 1 year after settling into a condo. But are fading away! I bought it without knowing the best parts - it's high security, and is full of Loners! Thousands! No one knocks on your door, Wooo! At my last residence, the neighbor on one side would knock on my door, or come to car window to tell me she hated the way I wore my hair (in a Kim Kardashian ponytail, who cares?). The redhead on other side had it in for me. Would stare and gossip. Write me nasty letters. Well, when she was off on a business trip, I saw her husband welcome a foxy Asian woman. She stayed 1/2 hour. But did I blab? No, cuz I have a Life.

I know exactly what you mean. Its so weird, I eventually felt like that back in 2014/2015. I had bare minimum, worked at my uncles garage earning less than the minimum wage (it was out of their kindness to keep me around so that I felt like I belonged, earned some cash and wasnt idle). At some point I was just so peaceful, I achieved finding that peace and with that came happiness. I do think that they go hand in hand. Prior to that I had a decent beginners job, had a girlfriend and felt that I knew it all since I gad those boxes ticked..until I lost them. After finding that peace and happiness & towards the end of 2015 I was interviewed for a very good job and meant me moving away. Everything happened so fast after that, right now my salary is more than double of what I started my call up job with BUT I am so miserable, so unhappy, I am depressed. I feel that this continuous hamster wheel is so meaningless. Its like bust your ass, work so hard, and for what you know. I understand the importance of money for survival but in retrospect what are we doing. I feel so lost and this longing to belong to something more meaningful and bigger than this rat race. Its just so sad

Thats great if you are living the single life. Unfortunately for me, I don't really have that option being a family man. I would ignore anyone that tells you its wrong though. People are individuals and financial security might have more meaning to one person where the other person values freedom and adventure. Neither are wrong and both have risks and benefits.

My grandparents raised me from the age of 2. Near the end of my freshman year of college, my grandma made a trip to visit me and show me her new car. She was retiring the next month and bought that car to finally travel, something she'd dreamed of her whole life. The very next week, she was killed in that car traveling to her job of 33 years, just one month and one day from her retirement. On the 30 yr anniversary of her death I begin my mid life gap year. I'm asking the universe to acknowledge my talents and show me a new way.

To the people who say happiness can’t pay the bills…well what’s the point in living a life if you spend all your time in misery working a job you can’t stand. Obviously yes, money is a part of life and you need it to play the game but you can find a middle ground. A fancy car and huge house is cool but that fades for most of us. That car becomes something to get you from point a to point b. That house is just a place to put your stuff.

I now have a home base and small business and gain a lot of happiness helping my community and working hard for them and myself. I'm realizing the struggle and hard work toward a positive end is what makes me happy and allows my head to rest comfortably at night. I feel less 'rogue' now in my 40's, but still love adventure:).

Thanks Tim. Going through a major life change for my own mental health. My coworkers openly joked about my mental health in front of me after I got out of an Behavioral Health Clinic literally two weeks ago. Have not been back since, I mentally checked out of that work place. My manager as well as the team lead supervisor made me feel uncomfortable. My manager gave me a look of contempt; like he wanted to punch me. The supervisor got mad at me as I had to use the restroom close to breaktime, got accused of doing it on purpose even though I just swapped from night shift to day shift. I do not feel comfortable saying this but I attempted suicide back in February this year. That is why I went to the Behavioral Health Clinic; immediately after I got out, I happened to notice my coworkers giving me looks of disgust; like I was a bad smell to be avoided. Have not bothered to talk to them as they make me feel surrounded as well as feeling horrible anxiety with fear. To anyone who read this, mental health is a serious issue in our society now more than ever. If you have anyone in your family or a friend or a significant other, just listen to what they have to say and find ways of helping them out of their own predicament without coming off as condescending or preachy. Take care Tim as well as your audience. Be well and have a great day.

Happiness means different things to different people. I totally agree with your view Timothy. After many years of what I call the “fake chase” of material gain and trying to impress in order to look like I have arrived; and trying to live up to traditions that were slowly draining me to absolute misery. I one-day “woke “ up, started journaling about my feelings and even wrote a book about it. Titled “Woke”. Available at amazon. I woke up to the fact that the material gains in my life were not making me happy. My happiness had a different meaning. I came to the realization that when I die there will not be a u-haul with my material possessions going with me, and no amount of money will save me. So, I’d better find my happy even if that means living life outside of the traditional box. Life is so much shorter than we realize. I feel if you do what you have passion for, then, whatever comes with that, good, bad or ugly; you will thrive. Happily. Blessings! Phyl

I was blessed to work in my chosen field as an RN for 32 years. The first 10 years I loved it. The last 22 years were frankly quit rough. But, I needed to make a living. I was about 8 years from being able to comfortably call it quits as an RN about 10 years ago when first my sweet Dad...and then my wonderful Mom started having health challenges. It was honor to quit fulltime RN and move to parttime work and eventually no work as I moved from parttime caregiver to fulltime caregiving. I would not trade my time with my parents who have now both transitioned this life. After losing my last parent (my dearest Mom I had no more left to give anyone). I said no more work and immediately said I am just retired. Yes, I live very modestly. But, I would not trade the peace to go through adjusting to life without both of my best friends. It is not about stuff in this life. But, each of us must determine what is important to us. For me it is quality time and not about acquiring more stuff. You can't take it with you. What I have been blessed to acquire and the modest inheritance left to my from my hard working blue collar parents...will all be left to charity (Children's Hospitals). I know this gesture would make my parents proud. I was taught you get more with an open hand than a closed fist.

what is interesting is that the more "successful" you are the more obligations you are, which means more stress. happiness for me means not having to worry about so much. everything in my life is predictable, which I like. I can go on vacation a couple a times a year, and I don't have to deal with someone controlling me. for me, happiness = freedom. what a lot of people think happiness is, is actually highly restrictive. i was actually miserable when i was making the most money of my life. i had no balance. balance is key. if you're only working, your life will suck, and you won't have time to work out so your health will deteriorate. I saw the video where Coach reviewed your video! He preaches no relationships or marriage, which I think coincides with what you say, kind of. Marriage leads to divorce. I think it's better for men these days to focus on themselves, on their career, not spending all of their money on having a family. I also think both of you think that what society dictates you should do to be happy (marriage, kids, house, etc) is not what everyone should do.

A decent supporting partner should always improve your life. You should start with a job that doesn't cause to much stress. Eat healthy food and exercise to improve strength and fitness other time and never stop. Fitness is for life. If all these can be maintained and enough funds are available to support a family then one could be considered. Children are a luxury not a right. And a good partner will help you improve yourself.

I am glad that I don't need very much to be happy. Driving my old car on the backroads with my dog next to me is awesome. Don't need or even want a brand new truck for that. Also when life gets difficult, it is good to remember what you have. If your truck breaks down, be glad if you still have a bicycle. If the bike is broken, be glad if your legs are still working and you can walk. Change your mind set. There are so many people who wished to be able to experience to walk one more time. Focus on what you have and be happy for it, not focus on what you don't. Also sharing with others brings lot of joy. It is possible even if you don't have very much or no money at all. Peace good brother. I think the word you are looking for is "Peace". Maya Angelou put it best, "Peace is a state of being no matter what happens in your life." Happiness is fleeting and if you define that as your life's purpose then you will always CHASE it. You don't have to CHASE peace. When you find peace, it will be with you in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer, in good company and in loneliness, for better and for worse, during the death of a loved one, and even when you yourself are on your deathbed.

Hello Tim, I totally agree with your mindset. When people tend to ask me what are my goals in life and where do I see myself 5 years or whatever amount of years they have in mind, my answer has always been.......to be Happy. I just want to live happy " I'm living more in my mind and less specific to the environment(society) because I have no connection to it" Happiness entails a lot outside of chasing after titles, fame, money, and material things for me.

i agree with what tim said at 8:30. a lot of times, i will sacrifice happiness in order to save money. need to stop doing that. life is too short for that. i work extremely hard and deserve to enjoy myself. i grew up in a household that was always penny pinching, i dont want to make the same mistakes of my parents. they were miserable.

My happiness can typically be found in two places. One, solving problems and two, driving (not commuting but actually driving). So that's what I chase in my life. Times when I can go for a drive or take a road trip and jobs that allow me to solve problems and/or train people on a skill I already have.

I keep seeing all the news of the "scary' prospect of a recession. I'm 67 and naively (and maybe to my ultimate detriment) have never given much thought to the cyclic nature of these events. The only folks that need to be constantly in fear of economic downturns are those with "investments". I've been through many, many downturns and cannot remember ever being stressed out about this stuff. Greed will get you some 'stuff' but it also leaves you in constant fear of loss.

This is one of the reasons I enjoy your channel and videos. While I will occasionally watch videos from KZbinrs such as Greg Adams, etc.., I generally gravitate towards videos that focus on life philosophy, contentment, happiness, minimalism, and simplicity. I have always lived frugally and simply, however I spend my twenties and most of my thirties preparing way too much for the future which I do regret somewhat. That being said, now in my late 30's downsizing and focusing on living more in the present moment. As Alan Watts so often alluded "...you can't live at all unless you can live fully now."

The real question to me is that you are looking inside for your own happiness instead of what the external world is telling you. I'm with your friend. We were not meant to go through life with happiness as our _goal._ Finding happiness along the way is a great side-effect, but chasing happiness doesn't _lead_ to happiness, in fact, it can lead to sadness if happiness can't be found, or if one's view of what happiness is, is hurtful, harmful, or impossible to achieve. But then again, YOU are someone who has a happy upbeat positive demeanor already. I, on the other hand, do not have that naturally. I'm a pessimist. A skeptic. A realist. I don't suffer fools. But living only for happiness...it's a pipe dream, hon.

This video makes me feel like I’m not alone in wanting just to be happy! I grew up being poor, then my parents made a little money, then they lost it, then made money, then lost it, etc. This taught me that things come and go and not to associate my happiness with “things.” Because “things” come and go. I agree, I could live in a 1 bedroom with all my family(which I have) and still be happier than someone who is rich and living in a mansion(which I know people with this life). This video is 💯

I think our fears of getting old and sustaining ourselves in old age are so real, but it is played on by capitalism (financial advisors!) so the effect is we stay where we are, stuck in terminally boring jobs, trapped by a perceived dependence on health care and by high costs of living we create for ourselves, waiting until it's officially "ok" to retire. We spin our wheels a lot in the meantime trying to have "fun" and re-assure ourselves that we are living good, proper lives. Instead, we should have more open conversations about getting old, doing things we really want to do, what will we really need (not want), and who is going to be around to help take care of us. And if that picture doesn't look so good, well, it falls outside of the bounds of our culture, but who says we have to live as long as medically possible? Why don't we live our best lives now, while we are healthy and able, and talk about letting go at the right time in the future when it doesn't make sense any more?

You have an interesting perspective Tim, I plan to listen to more of your videos. My early upbringing wasn't necessarily "happy" and I ended up on my own around 17 years old. At that point, I had nothing, worked a minimum wage job but also lost all the stressors that resulted in a somewhat unhappy upbringing. Somewhere along in that time frame I realized I actually was pretty happy though slightly scarred from being poor. I set out on a path working towards a career that I would enjoy and also make me "rich" (I didn't even really know what rich was). Man it was hard, working all day, going to school at night, but I actually enjoyed the struggle and was very happy. My path was somewhat long but resulted in a rewarding career where I could make a positive impact on the world around me and was well compensated. I enjoyed my life, my career, married well, raised 3 awesome kids and because we always lived below our means, ended up a pretty well off retiree. My point is I believe happiness is a conscience decision that comes from inside one's self. Being happy and also financially comfortable are not mutually exclusive goals. The idea you have to be poor/broke to be happy is foreign to me. I've been poor/broke and was happy, but I like being happy with enough to live well and take care of my loved ones. Take care, stay positive and I look forward to more of you content....
