I really miss the PS3/XBOX360 days as well, personally was the best time to be alive. All the movie renting stores, gaming stores, music stores, cinemas and yeah gaming was simpler with everyone just enjoying full games instead of these Console vs PC wars. I enjoyed all the exclusivities each platform brought, and it was definitely more social than today seeing other people browse for items and interacting with salesclerks or even friends that happened to be there.

I would say the Xbox 360 is probably my favorite console of all time as well. There was something about playing Halo reach infection for hours into the night that gave me a sense of joy multiplayer games of today just can't capture from me anymore. Since I was younger at that time (I was in elementary school) I do remember the days of my friends coming over to stay the night where we'd boot up minecraft Xbox 360 edition and play a survival world with each other until it felt like our eyes were gonna fall out. with our bottles of sprite and dominos pizza next to us having an absolute blast. That's still a feeling I try to capture with my friends and roommates every now and then but it just feels like the games ain't the same anymore for better and for worse. I as well still play those Arkham games at least once a year and play many more from the generation just like it. Great video Erock thank you for the trip down memory lane.

Playing Gears, Halo 3, Uncharted, Bioshock for the first time Playing Batman Arkham. GTA 4. Spending countless hours online playing cod and when they cared about their campaigns. I had the green, i believe there was a blue one but i might be wrong, and there was a maroonish/ redish brownish like one aswell which i had also jaja. I dont have em anymore since i never really owned any of the required consoles to play at the time, i would always just either throw the guides away or sell it to some other kid at my school for 5$. Didnt really get to experience those 360 nor ps3 online gaming days. That late 90's to early 00's period was really like gold dust - devs were doing remarkable things, experiementing in different directions. And not only that but the whole thing (including online - just enough to not be overbearing unlike now...) finally entered the mainstream like never before. It was the perfect mix for a time. Not to say that we haven't had any new and great IPs since but so much of what followed in terms of games has essentially been a rehash of what was born on the 6th and 7th gen consoles, and of course earlier PC's. The last few games Iv'e completed (a couple for the first time) are 7th gen creations and I think there's honestly very little that still doesn't hold up extremely well. As for the hardware, yes rrod and ylod were a ballache I wouldn't want to repeat. However in terms of "design vision" there's something to be said for the simplicity of these older gen consoles which were gaming machines first and foremost that got straight to the point, as did the games themselves which couldn't afford excessive bloat.

Physical media for gaming shouldn’t really even be dead. Being blu-ray tech has gotten even better. Gaming from 4th gen console to 7th gen is where it was top tier. I switched to PC after early PS4 and still miss the old PS3 days because of memories and pure fun. Gaming is very lazy today and I feel I don’t get the most out of my current gaming pc because it’s slim but also I seen everything from the console days. Only PC game I feel that with is the old rouge spear era rainbow games.

Great video! And too much nostalgia :( I assume another thing apart from mass digitization and internet access is also the economic difference. I remember how in 2006/2007 it was pretty common to hear excessive purchases like having multiple Xboxes or PlayStations at your home or splashing out on outfits and gear for a single event. Nowadays it’s a different reality, really miss the 2000s
@123theprodigy5Ай бұрын
Man, even though I wasn’t a hard-core gamer back then, I definitely missed that experience. it’s all about frame rates, and graphics, no one cares about the joy of the game anymore. if your game can’t run at 60 FPS, then people like to throw a hissy fit about it. you didn’t have this back then. it was all about just playing the game and a having a good time with all of your friends.

I've been a PC gamer since 1987, so can't comment on the Xbox 360 specific aspects of your experience, but even as a PC gamer of that time, I agree with your sentiment. I only ever attended one midnight release, which was quite low key compared to your own, and it was for WoW Burning Crusade. But things like the box art, owning the game, where taken for granted, and missed. I was silly enough to throw out many of my old game boxes. It was a time when some of the OG studios peaked, studios such as Bioware as one great, at the time, example. I feel the 2000s were a golden age of gaming. We had a nice blend of graphics (for that time) and stories, it had started to become mainstream, thus more people interested in gaming, especially as the console got more powerful, and it hadn't become what it is today, pretty much what happened to movies decades earlier, a media for keeping shareholders etc happy, and not about the entertainment value of the content. I'm glad GoG has a sale on 2000s games, so one can revisit those older titles if one wants to.

I used to live in the US in my pre-teens to early 20's, though I never went to any midnight launch in particular, there were a million gaming reasons to "get me out of the house". Since I came back to my country in 2009, that drastically changed overnight because official distribution of physical console games was never a thing, you could go to game stores but since they had to import everything, game prices would vary wildly and also always more expensive than in the US. Consoles also cost twice, so that accelerated my move towards PC-only and started buying digital on steam way more often. So proper game stores or a big video game section in a mall or supermarket were never that common here. People got their games of course, but it's always been de-centralized because there was never "one place" to get them, and on top of that, piracy has always been big here. I do remember those times going to stores and just getting the game in the US very fondly. I'm at the point that I would buy inferior physical versions of console games just to own them, even if I have owned them on Steam, gog or other launchers for years.

@ErockOnTechАй бұрын
I've noticed a rise in nostalgia as well. I'm not sure why that is. Maybe it's because of our age and demographic and then the algorithms know exactly how to target us? I have no idea lol. It could also be the fact that I think we are overly marketed to 24/7. Almost everything is an ad it seems. It makes it easy to long for simpler times.

Going from crt 420p to 720p hd wide screen was a huge step forward and gameplay and graphics were constantly improving. I was like yes, but with physical copies theyll always be available to buy on the market even after a tornado or fire took your house, or 1000 years down the road, but for digital you cant especially if devs have the ability to take it away anytime and with digital, also I feel like very soon in the future we wont be able to emulate these games like we have been for the past generations, especially if its going all digital and they wont let you download or access the game file

Back in 2005 or 2006. I had a gaming pc. Where mods were really cool. You couldn't do that with the xbox 360. But with the xbox 360. You could couch party with friends. With certain indy titles and of course halo in some fashion. That was my cousins. Unless its pc. So it was SC or SC2 aka starcraft. Then PC just took over for most part. Once the ps4 and xbox one came out. Back in the day. The graphics realistic wars were odd. The Crysis 2/3 vs Killzone 3. The pushing of the graphics were interesting. Considering the consoles were slightly ahead of pc for a few years until roughly 2009.

Yeah I definitely think there was a time when it made more sense to be a console gamer. But of course, its all subjective based on the types of games a person likes. But today, in 2024, I think it makes the most sense to be a PC gamer. But yeah, I was feeling nostalgic. I wanted to share this video. Thank you for watching and commenting.

One thing to remember though is that PC gaming at this time was in a really really really bad place. Horrible console ports, bad DRM, ran like crap. Menus didn’t work for PCs either. Just all around a really bad time.

I still love my Xbox 360 but sadly for myself I was one of those owners who got the dreaded RROD. A year after though I got the Xbox 360 Slim with the much improved cooling fan and CPU and I've no problems with it to this day.

The 7th gen was so damn good, it was the best gen to be a gamer and it sure was a bad time to be a PC gamer when ports were far and between. That being said, I had PS3/Xbox 360 and it was the best combo for games. Now looking at today, I'm so happy to be a PC gamer since Sony and MS now supporting PC, it just made my gaming life easier. The only console I'll still buy is Nintendo for the exclusives. Edit: I only did Midnight releases just to pick up my next-gen consoles only. Does GameStop still do midnight releases just for next-gen consoles? My last Midnight launch was picking up my PS4
@ErockOnTechАй бұрын
My last midnight release was for the Xbox One X console. I was also there for the Xbox One midnight release in 2013. I have no idea if GameStop still does midnight releases for consoles or not. I imagine they don’t. The PS5 and Xbox Series X launched in 2020 which was during the pandemic. But I agree! It was the best time to be a gamer. I also agree that PC was slim pickings back then.

Man, I’m not even that old being in my earlier half of my 20s, but man do I miss the days before all the politics, 100+ GB game installs and when over all quality was more important than shiny graphics. Going back and looking at the system requirements for Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2, is mind boggling, how they could make such a good game with so little.

I miss the days of just dropping the cartridge or optical disc and it works immediately. Once they required you to install a game, it became too much like a PC. Also trading games with friends.
@ErockOnTechАй бұрын
I miss those days as well. I hate having to wait for games to install. I get it. But still it sucks. Also, “Hey man, can I borrow your game for a few days?”

I recently got a 360 slim for $60. And i love it. But it bothers me that the online store is gone. It pains me. I wish it was back so i could play gears of war 1 and 2 online. Or get DLCs. Original i wanted to mod it. But it's illegal. But it's still fun just to go to a GameStop or thrift store to buy a cheap 360 game. Despite the cons about the marketplace shutdown. It's still a good console. And i am so glad i have it.

Back then gaming was for the gamers, now gaming is for the companies and a shift that happened due to complacency and acceptance on the gamers part. The state of gaming today is down to the gamers not the companies as they only give you what you accept.

I very much miss the 6th & 7th gen consoles. Tech was just better back then. Everyone had cell phones but we didn't live on them 24/7. I miss the midnight releases, the LANs, Hollywood Video/Blockbuster. I miss TechTV & early G4. I've been a PC player since 2002 (6th Grade) when my dad had my first computer built for me but, back then you had a reason to own a console also. Not just one of them but all of them. They all had great exclusives and console features that were unique to that console. The only console I have now is a Switch. I feel like Nintendo is the only one who somewhat retains the old theme of actual exclusives still. No reason to buy Xbox or PS because most of the games get ported to PC anyways. Gah, I miss it so much.

6:50 ur mom I miss the PS3 days too. I played more games online like GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, etc. and the best part, it was free. I didn't have to pay $10 month/$60 year. It's not much but it was nice that I could jump online anytime and not have to pay. It seemed more people played online and chatted back then too. Now it's not the same from my perspective and well I'm not same either. I'm glad I was at a point in my life and others around that got to experience those early times of online gaming. It was fun!

Online multiplayer was in a different league matter of fact everything was developers actually came up with new ideas for games instead of pushing remakes with very little content and a minor graphics upgrade plus dlc meant something then like a map pack or levels and story content and was not shoved down our throat
