Everything is green! Making My First DIY Joinery Unit (Story 13)

This week I'm making my first MDF joinery unit ever! I'm constructing a small cupboard for my toilet room to hold several bins and toilet paper. I'm painting it the same colour as the room, which I think looks lovely. I was also feeling a little deflated, and thought I'd share some thoughts about working hard...
Q&A:
00:00 Intro
01:40 A short walk and thoughts on working hard
04:02 Continuing the toilet room, first some staining
04:16 My first try at mud and tape!
06:17 The joinery unit I'm making for the toilet
06:46 Cutting the pieces out of MDF
07:24 A short talk about painting and sealing the MDF edges
10:07 Painting the walls green
11:41 How I'm going to fix the MDF unit together: discussing options
12:55 Starting construction!
14:13 Making a little doorway in between
14:46 Planting seeds
17:24 Lunch
18:42 Continuing the MDF unit, using dowels
21:00 Laundry time
21:24 Recutting some of the pieces
22:50 Finished! Explaining the unit and how I'll use it
23:34 Oops, forgot something

I can relate to how you feel Rose. I spent most of my years driving big trucks in cities like Seattle and LA, which was stressful enough. If that wasn't bad enough, I had to deal with a boss that was very unreasonable. I finally realized I was missing out on life. I retired at 55 and moved into the forest in rural Washington state. (USA) Life is too short! I wish you everything you desire in life Rose. I really like your little home in Sweden. Good luck :)

When you start out life living up to other people's expectations of productivity, it's difficult (at first) to identify your own level of expectation. Where you are and what you're doing is perfect ... for you. Everyone needs those days where you don't do anything. It's called recharging. Don't do guilt. You're doing amazing and I admire you for doing it.

Very wisely stated. We have a right to live as who we are and how we are. Some people are always bursting with energy and a feeling they must be doing something all the time while others are more laid back and believe they needn't fill every waking moment with labor. We can only live true to our own individual identity. It is far too stressful to seek to fulfill someone else's expectation of us. I no longer care what anyone else thinks of me in this regard. I am me, you are you. I don't project my expectations onto you, so please afford me the same respect. Simple. I like how you think. Reminds me of a man I know. Hello me. 😉

I just found your channel and I am currently binging all your videos about your cute little house in the would and I am totally living vicariously through you. I agree an every thing you've said. This hustle culture we are living in, this mindset of constantly doingdoingdoing, of being constantly productive but in the end we never produce anything of worth in this culture. This mindset is so hard to get rid of. But its just not a sustainable way of living. Neither for this world nor for our physical, mental and emotional health. You did a big step and now you are producing something worthwhile. Something important. A home. Maybe one day I am mentally able to do that step too. There is to hoping.

Rosie, I can totally relate to that feeling of not getting anything done / doing nothing in a day, but not even enjoying but constantly beating myself up for not being productive. Instead of just chilling :D Why are humans like that? lol.. Loved the unit you built, especially that green color, it's so good!

It is overwhelming renovating the whole property! You are doing it right by prioritizing certain tasks that are important, like a bathroom and heating for the winter and a leaking roof! These are most important at first! Not the most creative but necessary for comfort. When I finally moved after living in the city for forty years and really needing to get out, it took me so long to get to a place where I felt at ease. EVERYTHING needed to be done at first; landscaping, removing trees and bushes; moving bushes, installing gardens and reworking the ones that were there and had been neglected; removing a shed and building a garage, excavating, planting, phew! I’m very organized and can’t stand things out of place. For that first year, EVERYTHING was out of place! I finally got everything the way I wanted, put in some new bath fixtures, painted, improved, fine tuned, unpacked all the dozens of boxes,(still not all done after seven years!) and getting rid of some stuff, too! It’s a process and doesn’t happen all at once.

I think our conforming to the normal work day, is something that is so deep and ingrained, its span is generational. It takes purposeful movements and decisions, that are deemed unusual, to forge a path ahead, tailored to us individually. It’s a new way of living life. There are more options now to achieve this. Exciting times ahead. Excited for your journey. Thank you for sharing it.

I really appreciated the opener to this video and your insight about taking a day off that you didn't embrace while it was happening. I spend the majority of my days being productive and when I need a break I often do this and it feels horrible! Exactly as you described. I end up feeling more down about the wasted opportunity to enjoy the down time than the wasted productivity and wish I has just embraced the time off and enjoyed the moments. Thanks again for your videos. I always learn so much!

I live in Sweden, a male and much older than you but much the same person, enjoying being creative and just enjoying the simple life to its full. Every day is a gift and being able to create ones own habitat in contact with the nature is so fulfilling and exciting. I make my living being a graphics designer, working mostly with my computer, but built my own simple house in the forrest. My place on earth, where I feel completely calm, safe and happy. I'm not making videos but constantly sharing my thoughts with myself using voice memos while taking long walks.

Rosie, You did really well , by the time you put items on that unit, you will not notice anything wrong. Not doing anything in a day is not wasted, you rested your body and mind.We all have these days.We all say we wasted a day… in fact you haven’t , you rested. Something your body needed. Please feel happier with your work you do, because you have done it, by teaching yourself ! No builder is doing it for you…. Keep the videos coming as we enjoy them.

It’s very very difficult to properly relax and live mindfully, as you’ve said especially when you’ve been used to working in stressful environments. It’s so deeply ingrained in a lot of cultures. You have good insight though and self awareness and so you are halfway there to being able to achieve a good life balance. You are very wise and knowing for your age if you don’t mind me saying so. Many people don’t get to this level of self awareness and realisation until they’re older ( which can make it even harder to change). Sending good energy to you Rosie 🌈🌈🌱🧘🏼‍♀️🌿

12:45 the ring is a depth stop. You set it at how deep you want the hole to be (typically half a dowel's worth plus a little bit for glue and 'crap' ending up in the hole) and then you will know when you have drilled to the desired depth because you reach the ring as you drill deeper into the material.

Like your video and your reflections on life. And like the green color too! A suggestion for your next piece of furniture: make the whole piece from bare wood first, making sure everything fits together (and fits as a whole in the place you want to put it). Then glue/nail/screw everything together. Then you can seal the few remaining visible edges if you want and finally paint it. If you want a straight edge when using the circular saw, you can make a guide from some leftover plywood or mdf (make sure to use the original machined edge of a sheet, not something you sawed yourself and don't use ordinary timber) and after clamping it down, you can guide your circular saw along it. And the warped wood: it always does that after a while, especially when untreated. It can also happen after you have installed it. Makes it harder to work with as well. But it looks nicer ;-)

Another great video I love the green colour. Take your time that’s what it’s all about, the small ring goes on the drill bit so you don’t drill to far in to your timber. 😊

I just watched your last two videos and I think I really underestimated how old you are. Hearing your story is making me feel so much better about my own life lol (I’m 33). And we have two pet bunnies, they are fantastic! Little turds that chew on everything, but since they are silent animals, I feel such a connection with them, they just have beautiful souls and they give fantastic hugs :) also, I’m currently also starting my second gardening year, just on my apartment balcony, which has really made me appreciate them for their fertilizer!! Its the only animal manure that can go straight into your garden without having to be composted first. One word about planting so many courgettes - mine all got powdery mildew last year so read up on that and its remedies/prevention. Its devastating. I can’t wait to see your property in the summer and fall! It’ll be so fantastic ❤️

You have an adorable little home in a gorgeous setting…enjoy each step …there is no rush and we all want it to last! I was a little sad to see you cover up the blue and white wall paper as I felt it suited the cabin and gave it such character…totally different than something I’d see here in Canada. I live in a 200 year old log cabin with tons of character. I added a small addition to have main floor bath, possible bed down the way but use it now to do my art work in. It is all tongue and groove shiplap which I white washed…I love it! All the best!

In boat building there are no square shapes. Templates are definitely the way to go. Clever you. A rough in piece of cardboard held to the flat face, allows you to use a ruler to draw lines directed at all the ridges and valleys. Mark 10 cm in on the card, then you can transfer the dimensions onto your board, connect the dots for an exact fit. The other type of template is called a ''spider''. A flat board across the front face, gets scrap boards tacked to it. These boards poke up tight to all the irregularities, and the whole thing resembles a spider when you are done. Your unit is nice and functional, well done. carl@...

Also when you mentioned the ‘wasted day’, reminded me I feel accomplished if I have been productive, but sometimes I exhaust myself too. If I know a day ‘is a loss’, I label it as a chill day..somehow my brain files that in the right cubbyhole for it to make sense lol. No day is a loss as long as we are present for it, thankful for it, even if that is a retrospective labelling of the day🙂👍

It is healthy to live according to our natural rhythm, it is natures way to maintaining good mental and physical health. Sadly society expectation and economic pressures mean we get out of natural rhythm leading to imbalance, illness that is psychological, physiological and spiritual. Green is my favourite colour, it has a soothing effect on me. That dark shade is wonderful, I would choose such a colour for the entire outside wood panelling if I owned a house just like yours. You channel is growing, though it may not provide a full income as you say it helps. I feel sure that you will find other ways to supplement the income in ways that do not cause you stress to ensure you can live the balanced life we all need to thrive and be whole.

Enjoyable video! Thank you for sharing your feelings as you navigate this renovation. The older you get, life becomes slower. Things get done, but if they don’t move along quickly that is okay. Life is meant to be enjoyed in the present, and sometimes that means to slack off to just sit or walk and take in the world around you.

I’m kind of semi retired although I’ll never ‘retire’ in the common sense of the word. It affords me to take off certain days, which, for me means piddling around the house going from one project to another or reading for three or four hours in the morning without leaving the bed! Feels SO GOOD! I do get busy later in the day but the morning felt SO RELAXING! When I worked full time, days like that were not an option. You might think ‘ah, weekends’ but I work weekends doing shows, so am up early! I’ve been working weekends for 45 years. I’m used to it. That’s when others are off so that’s when they’re out shopping!

I hope this year you prioritize getting the fireplaces working for next year. Electricity is expensive nowadays in Sweden. And get firewood too, you'll need it. I am interested in seeing more about your fireplace. It is probably a "rörspis", a very different beast from what you would be used to in the UK. It's massive to retain heat and the smoke runs up and down and up through channels to extract all the heat it can from it. A very efficient design! It's not meant to be fired often, 1-2 times a day. I would look for a local farmer or similar who sells firewood for a side income. Don't try and buy firewood from a big box store or something like that. Local is a lot cheaper when it comes to things like this, and if you buy enough you can get delivery via tractor. You will need several cubic meters. Birch is the best firewood.

You're doing so well Rosie. Your first joinery piece is amazing! So clever, and we all have to start from somewhere, and if this is your first piece I can't wait to see what you create going forward. Beautiful x

Hej Rosie, Liv, Leben, what is it! Many of us earthlings never find out and are always on a Quest to find it. Life- just live it- no one said it will be a smooth road. ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS- BE HAPPY FROM THE INSIDE- the outside is always different. Should - da- Could- da- Would da - go for it with no regrets when you can! Ah min vackra Sverige! R.V. Porto Pottie would fit nice in your Lilla area med Blumen on the windows. ( great smell).Stay safe, positive and God Bless. Peace to all and Sapere Aude. Servus. SEMPER FI- Peter

Take your time. The cabin will never be really "finished" anyway. But it will better. Oh, and wood can warp even if you do everything right (but storing it flat and dry helps a lot). I like to check wood manually before I buy it, but that is tricky when ordering by truck.

Mooi om te zien dat je zoekt naar balans. Dat is heel herkenbaar. Zo heb ik al afscheid genomen van sociale druk. Mar daar zal je in Zweden sowieso niet snel last van hebben. 🙃
