For any new Software Enginners/CS students: When he say developers need more internal storage, maybe in some cases, but generally more ram would be better. Code is just text and doesn't take up a lot of space. While running servers, docker images, VM's, simulators, etc can take up a lot more ram.

It's all subjective....... No one can tell you want you should need, but being on the internet, we get it..... we Love in the same space, but that doesn't mean we have to think alike... I still thinking for myself... and usually get these Macs and take advantage on the 14-day return for that reason alone... Its not fake, because I'm in doubt... not just go outright as a"I'll buy it but will return it"... To me, you really have to hands on test something to tell, otherwise, its just words... My friends have convinced me to get 16Gig so....

Yes, it's definitely showing it's age in the sense that it doesn't get ios update anymore, and it's getting really slow depending on the task. But for normal everyday use like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet browsing, it's still fine. Hell, I even run a Virtual Machine with Linux and Windows 10 for my Comptia A+ course, and it gets the job done (a bit slow, but it does). It’s insane how much you can do with such a price, in fact, you can literally be on the search for second hand base MacBook M1 Air’s and save approximately $100 off a purchase then call it a day. I’ve gotten mine for $780, so $850 after taxes and it’s a steal for those who know how to shop carefully online. I’ve done so on eBay, and you really can save a ton of money rather than going to apple’s refurbished section. In the other hand, arguably pricing wise for the base model at every average use of productivity is so worth your money, it’s just pure reality of this M1 chip model.

Tbh I’d go new just for the warranty and ease of returning it should I face issues but then again I would be using the student discount combined with selling the AirPods during a back to school promo to offset the cost a bit. Even if I wasn’t eligible for a student discount I’d either look for discounts new or cough up the full amount granted I probably wouldn’t need to spend money on anything beyond the base model given how powerful the M1 is compared to similar laptops that start with a base Core i5.

@@User-cb4jm yea I was looking into that route as well, but I found really good deals on eBay that are actually authentic which allowed me to snag on AirPods Pro rather than just the original ones. Yes warranty sure is important, the owner luckily had it just during May so it’ll expire the next year of May 16, 2022.

@@User-cb4jm oh by the way the student discount applies to everyone, just digitally online shopping though. I agree. I purchased my first Mac this year. It was a Mac Mini M1 2020, didn't upgrade anything. Runs amazing for school and work. I have 2 zoom meetings a day on the weekdays and have a lot of processing behind Adobe cloud and Microsoft suite products. The storage is mostly cloud based so I haven't used more than 20-25% of its capacity. Not saying upgrading your specs isn't worth it if you do aggressive modeling or editing. But for most of us the standard edition is more than ideal.

I do not regret purchasing the base model and it goes from morning until night in a single charge. I can then connect to an external 4k display and have everything I need. I just bought a 16GB M1 for the simple reason that I used my previous MacBook Air for more than eight years and 4GB RAM became painful in around 2017. Had I bough an 8GB Mac back in 2013 I would probably be still sticking with it for another year or two. The important point is that the not-up-to-date processor is no longer a real constraint (like it used to be in the 1990s) but inadequate RAM is. Bottomline: future proofing requires more RAM.

I don't buy the base model, but I use a very similar strategy. I add some basic upgrades, and then plan on replacing the Mac every 3 or 4 years. Using an 8 year old computer that was maxed out when new is not a good experience. Also, once the computer runs out of AppleCare it becomes very expensive to repair, frequently prohibitively expensive. Due to this you are taking a much bigger risk carrying around a more expensive device. As you said, if you really really need the upgrades you know that, so you have no choice, but for most users theses upgrades are a poor investments.

I definitely max out the RAM because I've found as I discover new apps, and as they are upgraded, they consume a lot of RAM. Leaving aside creatives specific heavy apps/uses like FCP, video rendering, etc. heavy web apps for work use hoover up memory in minutes. I'm waiting for the next 13/14 MBP and will get the 32/64 RAM version. I'm on a 13" 16GB Intel right now and two web apps + 3 macro heavy Excel files + 2 graphic laden PPTs introduce the beachball. Only M1 from now on. My 13" has slowed down after just 2 years whereas my previous one slowed down after 4 years and that's partly due to the rapid ascent of app technology.

Good information but there is definitely some value in having your storage and RAM contained in one device without the need for dongles, cables, etc.. That value will vary from person to person. Secondly, many programs won’t run from external storage thus limiting the number of programs that you can ultimately have on a base model Mac. Good information though.

Yeah if I got back into having a big media connection or editing video, I'd have no problem using an external drive or NAS, but 256gb barely feels like enough room to hold applications and have enough room left to temporarily store some big downloads or whatever. My first Mac in 2009 had just as much storage.

M1 MBP 8/256 owner over here with win10arm running in parallels 24/7 because of work. 4gb/4cpu assigned to parallels and it works like a CHARM :) What i run in vm is WVD remote client with Teams and Power BI on all the time. I never experienced any slowdown, really. So when you mentioned people that edit 4k videos or use virtualization heavily should consider 16gb ram, i would just add, go with 16gb only if you are really virtualizing like crazy : ) Btw, i love your channel so much! I plan to go with next MBP and 16GB because I will keep it for 5 years. There is no work around for extra ram unless I want to buy a new mac unlike the external SSD options. I can see myself using virtualisation software in the future as well so may need this to be optimised.

Good plan. It makes sense to upgrade the RAM to 16GB, I don’t think it’s a crazy idea unless you are solely using it for very casual use. There’s no processor choices, only the very powerful M1 which is all the more reason you’d be keeping it for longer as apps get more resource intensive. SSD can be expanded with cloud/external drives but there’s no work around to add RAM to a MacBook like you could a decade ago.

Great video! Thank you for making it. I just have a suggestion: The moving background on your display in the background is cool but I found it a bit distracting, especially because it makes the jump cuts so much more visible (you don't move a lot but the pattern on the display is completely different) so maybe a neutral fixed background would be easier on the eyes. Cheers

I have the base model 14-inch M1 Pro with 16GB RAM and 512GB and it's enough, but barely enough for what I do. I run Docker containers, MongoDB compass, Brave & Chrome (with avg 10 tabs each), VS code, Postman, Slack, etc.. and it usually doesn't run with any stutters. It will typically write about 1GB to swap. I would have liked to have gone for 32GB RAM upgrade, but I didn't want dish out an extra $400. However, the unified memory is really fast and snappy, and the base M1 Pro should be more than enough even for 99% of productive users.

I agree...good idea, especially in the new M-series era. I am an advanced enthusiast (not a Creative pro) and have followed this philosophy for the last 15 years. I have usually bought used Macs already a few years old. For example I bought a 2008 Mac Pro in 2015, did a few upgrades (RAM and Flashed GPU) and used it as my daily driver until November of 2020. I also bought a used mint condition 2014 i7 iMac with a GTX 775M in 2019 for a steal. Same basic idea with my iPhones and iPads. I now have the Base M1 Mini and will hang on to it until the intro of a new M-series Pro Mini. The re-sale market for M1s will likely remain strong so I can sell it to defray the cost of a new purchase or pass it along to a family member or friend in need of a decent Mac. BTW, I have always been able to sell my older Macs quickly and at a price that is fair to me and a bargain for the buyer.

Software development wise more memory or more ram really depend on what field of software you are. I mostly do Web development stuff so what I mostly need is processing power which the new m1s at their base models have a lot. I’m very slowly migrating to mobile development but because I also have an iPhone testing my apps directly in my phone instead of using a virtualization (for which I would basically need more ram) is a much better idea as I’ll have the user experience out of the box.

Exactly, a lot of engineers can get away with 8GB, only people that have to deal with virtualization and docker images might need the 16gb version. 8gb is more than enough for regular web and application development.

The gist is for casual use, a base model M1 Air will be more than enough for you. The M1 brings latest gen Intel i7 performance to base models anyway so it’s fine, I’d only advise upgrading the RAM if you need 16GB. You can go crazy with storage prices so it’s better to stick to a decent amount for you and expand the excess to a external SSD or cloud services such as 6 x 1TB OneDrive (which you will have if you use Office 365 for their apps)

His first ever computer Doesnt get another one for 10 years, its the same with the iBook. He gets the base model when it first comes out, doesnt get another for 10 years. Then he gets the base model again. As of now his Apple Ecosystem consists of a base model 2018 iMac, a base model 2019 MacBook Air. A base model iPhone X. Base model iPod Touch 7th Gen. base model iPad 7th gen. I think you get the point. I find it incredible that he used the original iPhone for 10 years. Pretty good advise. As far as Macs go for me. I usually update to last years base model every year or two. So when the M2 Mac Mini came out for example I bought a base M1 Mac secondhand for half the cost of new. You usually find new Apple owners coming over from using Windows PC either love Mac OS or hate it. Some people just don't like change and end up back using a Windows PC. And you guessed it, their shiny Apple product ends up collecting dust until they decide to sell it.
