I just passed my 90 days in my first nursing job in the hospital and it is soul crushing work.
@MD-sy5tn5 жыл бұрын
This is what the hospital is like. I've worked as a nurse in the hospital for a year in a half--one year in ICU and now I'm in the ER. I also was a PCT in the ICU for over a year. You're right, the hospital setting is very demanding. When you think you've done a great job throughout your hard 12 hour shift, management is always there to let you know what you need to improve on. It's legit like customer service. I remember the other day I had a great experience with my patient in the ER. Whenever the patient was leaving she thanked me for taking great care of her. Instead of acknowledging that I helped the patient, my boss pulled me aside and said Meghan why didn't you ask her to complete our survey on her experience in the ER??? It's things like this that push nurses away. In the ICU my patient would be coding and my manager would be standing at the door asking me why my name wasn't written on the white board. Although the unit I'm on now is better than the last, there are still plenty of days where I dread going into work. We shouldn't have to "recover" from our jobs.

I was in your same shoes. Right out of nursing school I started on a TCU floor attached to a hospital. It was an elderly TCU, so it was basically a combination of a med surg floor and a nursing home in one. I questioned my years of schooling and really asked myself “what did I just get into?”. After months of working there, I took a risk and applied for different clinic jobs. I ended up landing a clinic RN job at an asthma and allergy clinic and have been working there for almost 2 years now. I get paid more than I did at my TCU job, I don’t feel stressed as much and don’t feel like my license is always on the line. I love my patients, coworkers, hours (like you I work 4 days a week, Tuesday through Friday). I get paid holidays off and feel like I have a life outside of work but love going to my work everyday. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to bedside or hospital nursing. Clinic/outpatient jobs give you the freedom, flexibility, and stress free lifestyle as a nurse, while still giving you that fulfilling feeling of making a difference in the community.

I loved nursing and started working as a bedside nurse right after I graduated. Then (1979), there was not much out there for nurses to do but to work in the hospital setting (although public health nurses were up and coming then). I didn't like bedside nursing from day one but thought it was the initial 'shock' and learning curve that all nurses go through in the beginning. I truly enjoyed my patients but I was very unhappy with the clinical setting. Life happens, we started a family, months turned into years and more years and I stayed in an overly-demanding job until I completely burned out and left. I often think that if I had found a more compatible setting to work in, I wouldn't have burned out. I say, be brave and try a different setting. If you still find yourself unhappy, then make the change to a new profession early on and not wait until its too late, like I did.

Aww I loved reading this! Thank YOU!! This is one of the reasons why I love nursing so much. You can get mega prepared in a hospital with super sick patients and then later on take those skills to another area of nursing that is more up your ally. Some peds and labor/delivery nurses do this too because not all of them get the chance to start where their heart is at. I wish you the very best in your first job next week! My mom was a nurse and I remember her coming home very tired, stressed, and even angry all the time. Some days she would eat a bite or two of food and then head to bed. She also worked with a lot of lazy nurses. A job is a job though. I am an accountant and although I like the actual work, it's pretty much dealing with bitches all day. Bitchy coworkers and bitchy managers, both male and female. Oh well.
@aileensuarez91924 жыл бұрын
coupleofbeers31 you get lazy coworkers and bitches everywhere, the thing is that in a job like nursing that you have patients life in your hand, it creates an extra amount of stress, because there is no time for errors. Having bad coworkers put more stress as well, is like too much stress.
@catbee14524 жыл бұрын
Its really not about working with bitchy people. Some of the bitchiest people are sick patients. This was never the problem for me. A sick patient is NOT a happy camper. But this is exactly what I loved about nursing..working with the most difficult, angry and non compliant patients! Once they understood that you were there to help them unconditionally, trust started to build. It's this connection I loved most. But healthcare regulations removed this connection really. There was no time to connect with the people that needed you the most. You just had enough time to complete the copious amounts of data entries. Doing your best was not sufficient for the administration; they wanted even more. Being a nurse is different than being an accountant when it comes to the reasons nurses burn out. When you are dealing with life and death, there is a very deep meaning attached to the relationship between nurses and the patients who entrust their lives to us. Mathematical errors will not kill someone. In healthcare, PTSD is not uncommon. Not so sure you see that in accounting. Perhaps this explains why your mom was always tired, stressed and angry. She was deep fried from the constant demands. It is both physically and psychologically exhausting.

@@aileensuarez9192 Absolutely. Although I complain a lot about my job I know it's nowhere near as stressful as what a nurse has to go through. I am going through this RIGHT NOW! I am a float pool nurse. We float every 4 hrs most shifts so we walk out of one disaster discharging and picking up new patients then start the same rat race over for the next 4 hours while adding in wound dressings that didn't get done the 1st 4 hours etc etc. The SHIFTS can be AWFUL! Some days I just want to break down mid shift, but there is NO TIME for that at all. I rarely get a lunch break or a bathroom break and often have to stay late to finish charting so 12 hour shifts are easily 14 hour shifts. I often feel like 50 dollars an hour wouldn't be enough for what we do...and yet we will never ever make that. I am job hunting, but worry that the money will be so much less. I can't cry anymore, ache anymore, and spend my days off barely able to move while my kids wonder why I'm acting like I got hit head on with a baseball bat. It is time for a change for floor nursing, or hospitals won't have ANY LEFT. I Don't know how people do this 30+ years. The ones who do Are True SUPER HEROES! I work for an integrative medicine office, we are more holistic/functional, we work on nutrition, exercise, optimizing hormones/vitamin levels, we also focus on anti-aging, we do IV vitamin infusions and some aesthetics. I LOVE my job. I work M-F, 8:30 to 5, holidays off, I actually get a lunch because we don't take patients for an hour, so I get my 30 min lunch and another 30 to get caught up on odd ends. Our office is clean, serene, and beautiful. We don't take sick patients, we work with most people that are generally healthy but are frankly just tired of feeling tired and doctors ignoring their symptoms...I get to room all my patients and talk with them (my favorite part) while then doing office tasks, preparing schedules for our providers. I work.for a PA and three APNs and I LOVE going to work every day truly. Another pro is that my office, my boss, doesnt care about my tattoos showing which many organizations tend to be strict on. I have never had anyone appear to be offended, in fact I get more.compliments than anything. We also have casual Fridays which I have made it a point to wear funny nurse shirts. The best part, is I get to build professional relationships with patients for the long term and see them transform their lives and tell us how forever greatful they are for believing them and listening.to them when for years they were treated just like a number. There are places like this that do exist and perhaps holistic offices are somewhere some of you can look into if you're burned out from bedside, nursing homes, or strict organizations. Bless all the healthcare members that do work in these places.

love your videos and your honesty. im a tech at a hospital and even i have anxiety at times feeling like im being pulled in many different directions to get all these smaller tasks done for ppl and i don't like to keep patients or nurses waiting but things definitely add up when it's busy. i see how stressful it is for nurses having the responsibility of patients lives in their hands and getting everything done at the right times. it's a lot to prioritize and manage. some days im like maybe i could be a nurse and other days i question if i really want to stay in healthcare. i kno there is so much flexibility with nursing job opportunities but if im going to go to school to become a RN then i kno i would want to start out in a hospital so i learn the skills and get the experience that most RNs have. tho at the same time i kno how hard it is working in the hospital, what is expected of the nurses, and the little support the nurses have at times and so that turns me off to becoming a nurse knowing i would work in a hospital in the beginning. i kno i could eventually transition to working somewhere else but in order to get the right foundation and experience i would have to work in the hospital and i genuinely don't kno if i could do it

I feel like this and I haven’t even started nursing school 😓 I’m a nurse assistant but feel it’ll be almost the same as a nurse. All the feelings you’re mentioning I feel too. I’m at a crossroads because I don’t want to be a nurse but just got accepted to nursing school

I will say it is the most rewarding career ever and I wouldn't change it for the world! I just found somewhere that I truly feel like it fits, you know! You just gotta find what makes you feel right. For some it might be labor and delivery or pediatrics! For me, I found that I love surgery and procedures! I felt that from the beginning (in nursing school) and now I get to do it in a really fun and rewarding field- plastic surgery!

Just know you can do many things with an RN degree... over 300+ sub specialties to go into...

Really flesh it out and do some soul searching. I graduated nursing school this year. I knew half way through school that nursing might not be what I wanted to do, but family and instructors encouraged me to finish. I don't regret my choice there are some things I absolutely love about nursing (education, public health, women's health) but I wish I would have majored In something else or figured out quicker what I really want to do with my life. But I'm also blessed and so excited to be a nurse and be able to give back! So 🤷♀️ As a new grad your kind of limited in what you can do until you get 1-2 years bedside experience. Check out Mercy Gono's channel she does a lot of videos on things to consider before nursing school.

If you do not want to be a nurse then don’t go to nursing school. It is THAT SIMPLE. It is VERY hard to get into nursing schools these days. And hundreds of people that want to get in sooooo bad and you are taking their spot ...

ANGIE- O I’m a CNA for 2 years and love it. The pay starts at $22. And up as a CNA. My friend just graduated and does only Botox in the hospital in the Doctors clinic making $45 an hour. She loves it. No stress. There’s also Forensic Nursing. My mom makes over $60. An hour as a MRN. She loves it.

I’ve been doing bedside care since I was 17(as a CNA), and I’ll be finishing my RN at 22! But gosh I’m so burnt out sadly and always thought by the time as an RN I’ll even be more burnt out! I don’t know who knows!!! Heheheh I still love this profession... nice video ♥️♥️

Try doing a Pilates workout before your shift. This will definitely help with physical burn out, I can attest to that. We are too young!

I have been feeling this EXACT same way lately 😩 and have been searching and praying for a more stable position such as the one you got hired for. I will keep praying for something different to come up at the right time cause bedside nursing is just not for me.

Aw yes, keep searching, keep praying girl. God will place you where He needs you in His perfect timing. So keep doing your part, keep trusting in Him and may He bless you with that new position according to His perfect will.

I feel like the universe directed me to this video. I'm working in an adult ICU right now, 1 year in and I'm fed up and burned out.

Onyeka did you start in ICU as a new grad?

@@kae5521 No, I worked in a nursing home for a year before ICU

Onyeka how do you like ICU???
@nanajin20114 жыл бұрын
I would choose the nursing home I worked in compared to hospital 😔
@onyeka22624 жыл бұрын
@@kae5521 I don't hate it but I'm not happy in it if that makes sense. It's a great experience though that helps you build your independence, confidence, and skills as a nurse, especially as a new RN

This is so helpful! I’ve been on an orthopedic floor for almost two years. It’s busy, stressful, but I generally love my patients and coworkers. I always thought I would go into critical care or the emergency room but I am even more passionate about preventative and natural medicine. I’m starting a blog and going through a nurse coaching program this year, so I’m hoping to be able to have my first paying clients by the end of the year! But I am still so torn about leaving the hospital, if that’s what it comes down to. I feel like I would be “wasting” my skills or potential. People always tell me I should go to the ICU so I’m just not sure! Any tips for dealing with these feelings?
