We feel younger since making this switch, way less stiff in the mornings. So encouraging to see other 40 somethings waking up and realizing how important movement is!

In the last couple weeks I’ve started sleeping on a 3” foam mattress in the floor. I’m in my mid-50s and was starting to not be real comfortable on our mattress. I was having to use lots of pillows and rolled up towels to get the support needed. I’m sleeping better on the floor with one pillow between knees if I’m on my side. Interestingly, I’m starting to sleep on my back too. It opens up your chest/shoulders, feels good. I also fall asleep more easily on the floor and wake up feeling refreshed. I have noticed I’m gaining some strength and flexibility in hips and legs, and it works on your balance, too. 👍 I echo the “take it slow” method of transitioning to floor sleeping. I already had a long kids mat on hand, and set it up next to the bed and spent a week or so getting used to it. Now it’s not a question anymore, and I’m watching sales to buy an adult sized mat.

It took 2 years for my body to "forget" sleeping on a bed. I was 53 when I started. That was 2 1/2 years ago. There were times during the first 6 months when I just wanted the bed but I resisted and stayed on the floor. Finally, a few months ago I threw out my mattresses and frame. I don't expect to ever go back to sleeping on mattresses.

I've been thinking about getting a floor mattress recently!! It's amazing to see the befits you talked about and love that you don't use a pillow either. One concern of mine is how to air it out. I know you use a tatami mat, but do you have a routine for airing out the futon as well? Did you ever think about using a trifold mattress? I've thought about using a trifold just so I can put it on its side and make it easier to air out. Love your videos!!

Lol the swing flip brought me back. Ahhhh! Need to play more. I went back on the diving board (used to dive in HS / college) and was like man im scared but i wanna have fun! Another great video. I have a question though, how do you handle the aesthetics of having a floor mat to sleep on and rolling it up during the day? Like a bedroom without a bed. How to match it with the rest of your home furnishings. Obviously these arent deal breaking specifics but im curious. My baby sleeps with me. Now that he is mobile its scary to have a bed so high up, but also in my head it seems weird to drop all the height. Hope i am making sense here
@natashatheresa5 ай бұрын
So when my kids were little and getting too big for a crib, I put them on a floor bed hahaha. Each of them had a futon mattress in their rooms. If they had trouble sleeping I would sometimes come join them. It was easy and I didn’t have to worry about them falling. Their rooms were set up for toddlers, nothing hazardous or that can tip over, everything secured. Now for aesthetics, I probably should have elaborated more… I’m not really an aesthetic person. It’s just what is good for me and functional. I don’t have that many furnishings in the rest of my home either hahahaha. My goal is to have less and less stuff to maintain and care about lolll. But it’s not for everyone. But you can also go on Pinterest, there are some very cute floor bed setups hehe! But yes here is to playing more!!!

I recently tried a FULI mattress + tatami and found it not quite firm enough, it is supposedly 2.5-3 inches thick but when laying on my side I feel the hard floor and it bothers me. How would you describe the firmness of your mattress? Most traditional japanese futons use 100% cotton and mine had foam and polyester instead on the inside. I am very skinny so it is weird to fall straight through the mattress for me.
@natashatheresa5 ай бұрын
Firmness... hmmm... it's so hard for me to describe bc it's so thin... but it has a little give. I don't feel the hard floor... but.... i wouldn't plop down on it though. maybe it's medium firm... not too fluffy but doesn't feel too hard.

Oh! I have a solution for this! I bought a fairly cheap lofted twin bed frame (metal) on Wayfair. So like a bunk bed, but without the lower bunk. And everything I was previously storing under my bed, I moved up to the lofted bed frame. I oriented it lengthwise against the wall, so it's sort of in a head board type position with respect to my floor mattress. Honestly it's worked perfect and is everything I envisioned. And I've still got plenty of space up there - I just need to watch the weight I put up there, since the lofted bed has a 200 lb weight limit. But you could do a full size lofted bed, too - and then it'd be like you have your own little bed cave, just begging to be made into a blanket fort. 🤩

You would be surprised at how comfortable it is on your side. Your body can use the firmness of the ground to align itself right (except for you head which is where a pillow comes in). The mattress just gives a little cushioning so you aren't right against a hard floor. There are different thicknesses of mattress too so you can gradually get used to it if needed.
