@@ZeekEOSZ Honestly from what I gather, the S5’s autofocus isn’t so bad- it just takes a bit of work and setting adjustments to get it to a decent use. Still not on par with Sony or Canon though, but then most of my lenses are vintage/manual focus only anyway. Still, it’s crazy that Panasonic haven’t figured out a great autofocus system yet. Their cameras are otherwise damn near perfect, but more people flock to cameras with weaker codecs or major drawbacks because those brands’ autofocusing are more reliable.

Very interesting on the Aliasing issue.Pictures looked really good.Lovely colour.Even cameras like the Alexa and the Venice will trouble with some tight pattern,vertical or horizontal.I am intrigued to see if the Sony or the S1H can eradicate that.There is a ratio between the tracking speed and how much contrasts light,or heavy backlight there is,to avoid the aliasing but even then it doesn’t necessarily mean you have cracked it.A good example is Cuaron’s stunning ‘ROMA’,which in the early part of the movie suffers from it a bit.It is then corrected in the rest of the movie by avoiding heavy vertical and horizontal lines in the framing and the intense light to go with it.Nice vid.

Nice work Zeek! I find it curious that most of the criticisms were centered around the external RAW shooting capabilities. Although that might be important to you specifically, I think you're kind of selling the camera short. In my mind, the whole point of picking the S5 over other cameras is because of how good the internal recording modes are. I've seen videos that compare the internal 10-bit files against Black Magic Raw files from the BMPCC6k and the S5 still manages to pack in more dynamic range and comparable color quality. The internal modes are almost as good as a RAW image but with smaller file sizes and lens corrections already handled for you. Just my thought having two S5's in my possession and using them every day.

Thanks for sharing 👍 It's pretty much why I sold it, not the fact that it's a bad camera, because I did mention it has one of the best 4K I've seen in mirrorless cameras that I've used. There were just some things I didn't know to expect. The 4K Quality and colours are amazing. I do have the Pocket 6K which I do find Is better for video, but with the S5 and the possibility of BRAW, the S5 could become an amazing option for the price.

Proroes RAW is coming to the S1 on April 6th along with internal 6k. I only use manual lenses, auto focus just isn't great with Panasonic. The S1 also has fulll HDMI not mini. Yeah so I heard, that's really good for the S1! It's cheap these days. The S1H also is getting BRAW Option. 1- Aliasing is going to happen with many lower cost cameras. This can be fixed through electronic image processing in camera, but you won't have this on the cheaper cameras. A low-pass filter like the one in the S1H is a cheaper solution. 2- Cables can be a problem with any external recorder. Always carry multiple back-ups. You many need to switch recorders. I have had lots of problems with cameras using the HDMI mini cables. 3- The 24-105mm f/4 is not just a "kit lens". It's sharp. It doesn't breathe. And some versions are close to parfocal. This is outstanding for a 4 to 1 zoom lens at roughly $1,200. I bought the S1 with the film-makers firmware upgrade, and overall it's been excellent for my work. At some point in the future I will add a Panasonic S2H body ( it will have GH6-ish features, better low-light, better dynamic range, etc ) but for now I'm going to swap my GH5 for a GH6, mainly because it should match the look of my S1 footage more than the GH5 does.

Excellent, no doubt - the credible, and useful review! Let me ask you a couple of questions about S5. The first question about AF video reliability. I have an experience with Panasonic G85 and I found that G85's AF (at video) is generally acceptable, though not the best certainly. So, can I expect that S5's AF reliability would be at least on the same level as G85 provides? The second question is about S5's IBIS. Here is a common opinion that Panasonic M4/3 cameras (mainly due to the small size of their sensors) provide an exceptional IBIS performance that is principally not reachable for Full Frame cameras (even for Panasonic's FF cameras)? In other words, can I expect that S5's IBIS work at least close to GH5's (or let say, G85's) level of IBIS performance? And the extra question - Do you ever consider Nikon Z6 II as a potential candidate to buy to perform your video works?
@ZeekEOSZ3 жыл бұрын
The Panasonic AF is contrast based, so if you if little lights or practicals in the background you will see pulsing if you're moving and talking to the camera which can look distracting. IBIS is good with the S5, absolutely no issues there. Coming from the GH5 I felt right at home with the S5, just FF. The Nikon Z series are good, I'm just not into them though. I'm happy with Sony for now with KZbin stuff. I use Blackmagic Pocket 6K for Cinematic stuff or my EOS M with RAW Video Capabilities.

The GH5 is still definitely a good choice. Do consider though that the BMPCC 4K may be similar in price too as well as the Sigma FP. If you like M43 Panasonic then the GH5/G9 are still good options for the price. Not sure of any news of the GH6 ;)

@@ZeekEOSZ yeah no news on the gh6, the fact that they're still working on firmware for the gh5 leads me to believe it's still a long ways off. Yes it most likely will. S1H has the fix.

Likely a form of "pixel-binning" aliasing. GH5 looks far better as it downscales to 4K using the full sensor read-out. * I sold the S1 because of aliasing. * Can hardly believe Panasonic would sell this camera given the effective image resolution.

It might be pointed out that aliasing happens because an excess of pixels, relative to the final frame size, leaves gaps between pulled pixel values. I don't know if the camera shoots in 4K crop mode (the 4K contiguous pixels on the sensor), but if it did, that should remove aliasing though would increase the effective focal length. Also, though (full frame) large high-pixel count sensors have the aliasing drawback, they also have a benefit--easier to obtain shallow depth of field. And of course, photos with the S5 should rival any other full frame camera. Lastly, these cameras don't really shoot true dynamic range 10-bit. It's more like 8.1 bit. So the ability to record 12-bit RAW remains a powerful feature. I don't have either the S5 or A7SIII. Last I checked, the S5 was half the price of the latter... I think you were trying to say that ;)
@ZeekEOSZ3 жыл бұрын
The S5, unlike the S1H lacks an Anti-aliasing Filter. No big deal as it's not sporatic thankully, but it's there at times. Interesting, though I've never heard of the Panasonic not shooting Full 10 Bit. The colour reproduction is pretty remarkable, even when compared to 12 Bit External.
@MaxoticsTV3 жыл бұрын
@@ZeekEOSZ Aliasing filters add a small amount of physical blur between pixels. You can't do it post-video because non-RAW video CODECs save debayered image data. That is, if you have a telephone line going through 3 pixels of R,G,B, you're good. But if it only goes through a red and green, then you're going to get that magenta pixel in your video image (the blue pixel having no color say). An aliasing filter blurs all RGB pixels together guaranteeing that you won't end up with no color data for a pixel. However, the aliasing filter's drawback is that if you want absolute resolution it gets in the way, as it add blur that cannot be removed even from a RAW still. Many people throw around the words "dynamic range" and "10-bit color depth" without really thinking about what they're talking about. I'm not saying you do it. It's my little battle on YT. I don't know why I bother, but I do ;) When a camera records RAW it's generally recording 12 to 14-bits of pixel data. Let's talk 12 bit, so 4,096 possible values (counts of electrons). When a camera shoots 8 bit it's NOT recording pixel values, but composite pixel values from three 8-bit RGB values of 1 to 256. The complicated difference between H.264 and RAW generally gets people to stop listening or thinking. Anyway, you can fit 1,024 values into a 10-bit data word. That's certainly better than 256! However, it is recording 1,024 values from the RAW pixel values OR 1,024 values of precision in a 1-256 number range? Well, we know it's not saving it from the RAW because it's NOT RAW it's debayered into a new (24-bit full color) data space. Therefore, what we're really getting is say, 1, 1.3, 2, 3.6... in 10-bit, instead of 1,2,2,4 which gives a precision that can be noticed from less banding in EXTREME pixel peeping. However, the 10-bit is not pulling from a wider dynamic range of pixel values from the RAW data, which is what many people mistakenly assume. I wish more people understood how their cameras work. The manufacturers are not in the business of educating anyone. They're not going to say that a 26mbit image from a cinema camera will blow away a 400mbit image from a GH5 because a sensor made for video is optimized for video (pixels exactly the best size for the intended frame delivery). Shoot one video in 8-bit and another in 10-bit. Compare the file sizes. Is the 10-bit 25% larger than the 8-bit? Also, take that 10-bit internal and 12-bit external, load them in an editor that can deal with each natively (that is, not convert the 12-bit raw down to 8bit) and pull the exposure around and see which one falls apart like a cheap suit ;) Then compare the 12-bit raw to 8-bit and see if the 8bit is any worse than the 10-bit. All that said, if you can expose well, have balanced lighting, then you're right, I'm sure the color is great! What I'm talking about has ZERO to do with shooting good video.
@ZeekEOSZ3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, thanks a lot for sharing 😎👍💯 Its really all great information, I just think that in the end, people really don't care about looking under the rock. As long as the image looks good to them upfront and the fancy specs are presented, they'll take it. If the camera does the job in the end, then it's worth every penny. I get what you mean though. Lots of cameras come out these days like a manufacturer war instead of consumer education etc...😎👍

Thanks for the video, also for me the S5 is a really good camera, but I consider selling it because with the firmware update 2.0 that they did to the S1 it has better performance for almost the same price (If it gets used), one of the features that I need most in the manual selection of the circuit for the ISO, many times it works very well to use ISO 4000 which is the second ISO offered by the S5, but I have found many scenarios where I would like to be in the high circuit and lower the ISO to give more dynamic range to the shadows and not as much of the highlights is needed

@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks for your advice! I was considering buying one at 500 USD or less, I found one on internet. But I'd rather go on a small Sony model 💥🤩

If you don’t need the small form factor for travel etc or absolutely NEED 10 but 4K the C100ii is still a fantastic cinema camera. I loved using it as much as the S series.

Thx for you honest and real review! Yes, AF is the camel on Panasonic back! I wonder what it's going to take for their camera division to get their SH*T together and find a solution! This is 2021 man... this is been going on too long!! It's pretty well a given if Panasonic would match Canon's new mirrorless cameras AF system, stop gauging us Diehards with overpriced lenses, they would become s real player in the photo gear game! However, I'm not giving up or selling my Panasonic system until I see what they come up with in the GH6 in the Fall (or whatever they decide to call it). If the AF system in that camera is the same or in any way unreliable, then I'm going to do as you and switch Brands forever as Panasonic will fall further into camera sales oblivion.

No problem at all. I mean some of their camcorders have got it right with good AF, surely they can at least pass on the genetics to the new cameras they make. If they had great AF, then they would be real competitors to Sony and other brands. Anyway, hopefully new Panny cams will have better AF 🤞

Would S5 also provide 12 Bit just like S1 with new updates?
@ZeekEOSZ3 жыл бұрын
S5 does already provide 12 bit with external ProRes raw on the Ninja V. 😎👌

@@ZeekEOSZ ok. That's why it was not upgraded as much as S1. Ok thanks.

Hi I'm new to your camera system sony to some extent..i know... I had plans to buy new stuff of your s5... Have you tried with pro lens system... & ninja v needs hdmi 2.0 cable many deviate while using ... Is that recording 4:2:2 internal or jus 10 bit while going 4 kHDR.... And very much impressed of your clips of s5 apart above model which lumix is at par with A7siii...
@ZeekEOSZ3 жыл бұрын
I haven't used Lumix Pro lenses, only Canon L Glass and other vintage lenses. I have used 2.0 and 3.0 speed cables and both have caused issues with the Ninja V, internal is fine. But I believe somebody in the comments mentioned that the issue has been fixed from an update which is good to hear. The S5 does truly compare well to the A7SIII, just missing the AF doped/reliability in comparison to Sony.
