I personally prefer the S5 simply because it feels like a more purpose-built video creation tool. I love things like shutter angle and DCI 4K. I also just prefer that the sharpness, colors, and dynamic range are a little more suited towards having a neutral starting point for color grading. There's no denying that the Sony looks great as a final product, but I prefer the process of getting there with the Lumix.

I totally agree on that. As a former Sony user I immediatly switched to Panasonic after my intership, I never changed to another brand. The build quality, sensor quality, vlog colors and dynamic range. Lumix is very underrated and for the most creators the best option. Unfortunate sony is a bigger brand so there cameras will be more hyped always. But yeah why would I pay 4k for a sony a7siii if I can get a pana s5ii for half the price, with better features and image

I use a Sony A7S3 at the production company I work at and it's not just the greens that are desaturated, it's all of the shadows. You can see it clearly at 7:17. V-log has brighter and more saturated shadows which make it look very nice.

I love the video that how you can get a similar look with different and cheaper cameras but It felt more like highlighting the pros of one camera and the cons of another camera. The low light test is actually when you crank up the ISO to 200k or 400k because sony can shoot in almost no light and known for its light sensitivity, no way Lumix can catch up to that mark. Sony can go up to 120fps in 4K if someone needs that then sony will be definitely a clear winner and also the sony autofocus that you mentioned in the video.

I love my S5!! It's great seeing this side by side comparison and just how well it holds up to the A7S III. I used to shoot Canon before getting into video, and usability is really important to me. Panasonic make cameras that are such a pleasure to use...Sony not so much.

Lumix S5 4k50 crop is the only problem. The a7siii is better in my opinion, but 2000€ better? The S5 is so underrated!

A7IV basically addresses the price issue. It's pretty simple. If you need AF then you get the Sony. If not then go Panasonic.

The AF is also a huge problem on the S5, as is only 50/60p vs 100/120. Depends on your usecase, but for me I'd say... yes, it is $2000 better.

Basic conclusion: if you are a only vlogging then grab Sony. In all other cases lumix is clearly the better choice (Colors, Image quality, Video Features like shutter angle and waveform monitor, dynamic range, low Light, Ibis,...) and also much cheaper...

Hi Sam. I commented before but now that I’ve used my S5 bodies for a handful of corporate jobs, I want to say something. When I consider what camera I buy, I will not use price as a main consideration. However, you make a great point about the fact you can get multiple bodies that match in post. I bought four S5 bodies and my main issue is that the S5 won’t let me punch in while shooting video. I followed your video rig advice and bought a couple cages, small rig matte boxes, and monitors. Focusing is a breeze and the only issue now is the bulk of the rigs, but the benefit is my clients appreciate seeing my set up. Keep up the good work Sam. I appreciate your videos, and your humor.

@@fredriksvard2603 For some people, absolutely. For myself, I never use AF, besides using it for vlogging, which is very rare for me. Even then, my S5 with the 20-60 does a great job with facetracking AF while vlogging. I didn't think the crop would bother me either, and it everyday use or corporate work it's completely fine. But for wedding work, Full Frame is so nice. It really accentuates the "magical" feel of a wedding, since it feels dreamier and softer if you will. I've been shooting in 1080 60 422 for wedding work just so I can use FF on my S1 & S5. The 1080 on these cameras seems to fall victim to aliasing and moire, especially if you're using native lenses with no filtration. I typically shoot with older glass, wide open, with a 1/8 promist and a Variable ND, it helps a ton with combating those issues. However, I really just want 4k 60 FF lol.

S5 is selling brand new for $998 in the States. Dual ISO, 4k60 and 5.9k Raw output. Pretty hard to beat that if you don't need autofocus.

What's insane is that the Lumix uses a Sony sensor and manages to beat it in some areas. Imagine if Sony allowed Panasonic to use the phase detect af on the Lumix.....we would see an crazy change in power

Panasonic probably ordered a Sony sensor without phase detection AF but better light gathering tech. It's a compromise where Panasonic has higher resolution (24MP) and no phase detection and cheap price, and Sony has lower resolution (12MP) but larger pixels with phase detection using quad bayer (sensor is more similar to A1 than the S5) with a higher amplification on the 2nd ISO, and low rolling shutter but the price is massive. Which is why it's they aren't comparable if you need to take advantages of those features, most of the time people don't care about the advanced settings which is why the S5 makes sense if you're strapped for money.

@@natefullerproductions it was listed a while back. Had a codename beginning with IMX. Panasonic's been using Sony sensors for a while now. They started to use their own on the GH6. I'm glad they did and hopefully stays away from Sony and their toxic business practices

@@natefullerproductions It's the same sensor used in most full frame mirrorless cameras at the time, the Exmor R Back illuminated IMX410. Everyone used it except for Canon who made their own much lower specked one for their Canon R. Sigma Fp, A7III, Z6, S1H, S1, S5 all used the IMX410. It was the best quality to money ratio'd sensor on the marked. It's what you went with if you wanted to hit that price range. For information on all Sony sensors (and which cameras use them) Wikipedia has the full chart from Sony up. Just search for Exmor.

I’m extremely fortunate to have both; & they are both fantastic. But each is better than the other certain scenarios. To say one is ‘better’ is overly simplistic. Love the S5 user experience for video, but there are times I need the autofocus & 120 4k of the Sony. As I said, I’m lucky to have both of these great cameras.

Great comparison ! The S5 being an L mount camera allows you to put Leica SL glasses if you can afford… there are few on the used market… and there you have some incredibly ridiculously marvels of glasses. I tend to prefer the bokeh in you test from the lens you use on the Sony. But all the other aspects of the S5 have my preference. Put a 90mm SL Summicron and you end the game definitively.

It is clear that we are at the Panasonic Fanclub, but i also have Panasonic and 2 Sony a7sIII. I prefer Sony anytime,..........6:56 ..... that's why ! The colors can still be adjusted to look like any other camera, if you know how, but if something/someone is not in focus, this is no longer possible.

This is a "Sony vs Sony" fight. The IMX410 is a SUPERB sensor, any way you look at it. It's variants are used by Kinifinity and Nikon too. It's in the S1H, S1, S5, A7-III and XDCAM FX9 also. It's a great chip in every camera it's used in.

i think what is missing from this comparison is lens availability. If they are both equal... then the Sony definitely has the advantage simply because of their lenses If you’re on a budget go for the Panasonic but if you want to really dial in your footage the Sony is absolutely the winner simply because of the Lens lineup that is available and the picture profiles of the sony if you want SOOC perhaps the pana, but if you are serious you are probably color grading, and the picture profiles of the sony is superior… excellent comparison on the points you mentioned.

I checked the full specs from Panasonic, and the two standard (sensor shifting) IBIS options are "Image Stabilisation" (from the internal IBIS) and then Dual I.S. (with a compatible lens which also has stabilisation built-in). But then you also have "E-Stabilization (Video) / Boost I.S. (Video)" which are the two electronically-assisted stabilisation modes. So I think you might have not been using the standard mode, but instead the electronic one, which usually looks worse. And "sharpness" is surely more down to the different lenses on each body, no? Which exact lenses were being used on each body? You also seem to be using 2 filters on the front of the lenses - not sure why - so would be useful to mention what those are too. S5 is better yes, especially at the price.

Been using the S1 for a while now and even got myself a 2nd one and i have to say i completely agree that id rather have 2 cams than just a single expensive one. Atm you could roughly get two S1 for the price of just one a7s iii. I just think S1 and S5 are the best hybrid cams in that price range.

If the 12 Mpx A7s3 looks sharper than the 24Mpx S5 when recording at 30p, you can be pretty certain the difference is due to artificial sharpening which you can finely tune to taste on the S5, like so many other things. Same with noise. Some people complain that vlog on the S5 can be noisy, but they seem to forget that the default noise suppression on the S5 is extremely conservative. You can crank it up to 10 in 20 steps if you want to, or proces it in post.

Panasonic S5 is a great camera! But there is a big drawback, in addition to terrible autofocus, this is the lack of a low-pass filter, I often encounter moire, I have to use a glow filter, this partially reduces the effect. I think it would be worth talking about this when it came to sharpness. Thanks for the great review!

I had the original A7s, and I had the same color issues with green! I always had to isolate the greens and adjust them to look attractive, which was not easy with Premiere back in the day.

Let's push Panasonic to bring a firmware update that allows ALL-Intra 4:2:2 10 bits 400 Mbps on the S5, so i could leave the Atomos Ninja V at home :-) ! Btw as i commented in your previous video, same goes for A7sIII, shoot in prores raw with Ninja V so you will avoid nearly all "weird Sony choices" and also apply the V-log in FCP not the S-log3 curve and you will be surprised how good it is ! We call it S-log4 for fun ! I will finally add that if you are into sports go A7s3, rolling shutter and autofocus are so good and if you are into narrative go S5, best highlight rolloff for the price !

I find it odd that the A7Siii is a bit sharper than the S5 since the S5 is downscaling from 6K for extra sharpness and the Sony is just a 4K camera. Which makes me think that the sharpness on the Sony cannot be fully turned off, same thing happens with the noise reduction on the Sony making the high ISO shots mushier than the Panasonic.

You can actually set ur sharpness to -1 in s5..disabling all post sharpness while sony you cant go below 1. Maybe that's why, also it depends a lot on the lens. My sigma was way sharper than my pana 85mm..

IMHO normalcy bias influences what we perceive in performance and color science. For myself I often fall into BM or Canon for image but realize Sony seems to be further ahead in features but lacks ease of use in many circumstances. I like Panasonic but the lack of a good auto-focus leaves me wanting for my intended use. I would like to see IBIS that I could lock down when on a tripod and lenses we can set to hard stops when on manual for easy focus pulling. None of this is difficult to implement. I see all these mirrorless cameras as prosumer than professional in nature. I used to prefer Canon but am tempted by some of the newer science from other manufacturers. I was thinking of an FX3 but honestly think the FX30's 26.1 M pixel count is what I'd hoped for in the FX3 but in a full frame sensor. Maybe the FX3 ii will have it (ten years from now) when it comes out.

Personally, I think the Sony only wins in the AF and HFR, The Lumix S5 wins in all other areas including image quality. The IBIS is way better on the S5 than you reported it.

I just wish next firmware update would include 6k or 5k video. Otherwise very happy with my s5. Like you mentioned, a fraction of the cost of the a7siii. Not reallly bothered with the autofocus. Still waiting on S1hii, with 8k video, then I might upgrade. Then again a moot point, as almost no 8k monitors available right now. But plenty of tv's! 8k seems a bit more future proofed though.

Yeh it’s hard because you can’t directly compare cameras with the same lenses because then you’d have to use an adapter which would alter it again. Maybe cine lenses would be a good option, however, what I have done is compare the tools you’d use if you bought those cameras. Hope this makes sense

Hey thank you 🙏🏻 Yeah I love the Canon cameras so much for the way they work and the colours but for me the S5 has such a great image and colours. The system is a little clunky (not as fast touch screen etc) BUT in terms of the image I was looking for, this has it. Congratulations for the great video my brother, A year ago I bought the Lumix S5 and it really is my best choice, I love this camera for everything it delivers and for the excellent price, I recently bought a lumix 35mm 1.8 lens and I could have even better images, not to mention that for photos the s5 has the advantage for delivering photos with 24 mgpixes, finally loving the s5, but 2 months ago I got the Sony a7iv and I'm impressed with everything this camera produces, especially the autofocus in video lol, Congratulations Panasonic and sony for the great work.

@@sergiypervun both are great for photos and videos, but if you're going to use autofocus and you don't like to use manual focus for video, the sony a7vi has the best auto focus at the moment, another interesting thing that sony offers is that you can use one variety of cheaper lenses.
