Werner is fine company to work for. (I’ve never actually worked for them, myself, but I have several friends who have.) I know it feels like everyone here is ganging up on you to leave them, but I would advise you to tune us out and make your own decision for yourself. Werner wouldn’t be the company it is today if all their drivers bail after a year. It’s expected that new drivers see the greener grass elsewhere, but the reality is that a lot of that greenery is smoke and mirrors. After 25 years experience working for several companies, I can say that no matter what company you leave for another, you’re really only just swapping one set of problems for another. Every single company has its share of difficulties, and most of them boil down to 2 things: your relationship with your dispatch or your relationship with the equipment department. In my experience, the work itself has never been an issue, even when dealing with difficult shippers/receivers. It’s always truck maintenance or dispatch issues. Werner is well known across the continent because of their detailed care of their equipment. And they are also famous for their HOS compliance. The only thing you should focus on is your rapport with your dispatcher. He/she controls your paycheck. Everything else is just details. If you’ve reached an impasse with a particular dispatcher, request another. If you go to another company after only a year, you’ll be potentially limiting your options. 2 years experience is the magic number that’ll let you go to any company anywhere, unless there’s a lack of experience with a certain trailer type. But even then, most would be willing to train for it. If you’re thinking about buying or leasing a truck, I would advise against it yet. You’ll be paying for fuel, and you’ve seen the prices and are paying attention to the economy. Now is the time to wait. Plus there are so many other pitfalls to be navigated through. Anyone who’s done it can tell you. I’m trying to start my own company in this mess and that’s got it’s own set of challenges.

Any advice on how to get the secured ebfore agreeing to join them? My CDl school is right down the road but I need a company to endose me, so i will ask werner about the rider policy first.. Hi there!!! Sorry for late response. Hope it’s still in time to be helpful! We chose Werner because they allowed a passenger from Day 1. Most other starter companies had a waiting period for allowing passengers on the truck. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Congratulations on your career move! You need to start somewhere, so you need a company that will take you without experience. Werner is one of them. There are challenges, but you’ll get some good training with them. After 6-12 months you can move on to better paying companies. Kevin is much happier at Crete, but Werner gave him a good foundation. When we did our research it seemed the best one for our priorities. Look at recent videos from actual drivers and see how they like their companies. Then make a choice of what works best for you. Problem with swift is that their trucks are governed at 65, as opposed to Werner at 68. Those 3 miles a lot of difference, especially during long hauls. Just do what’s best for YOU and your family Kevin, and ignore the rest of the noise! Best of luck with everything!

Those are great reasons. I only had one reason for starting out with Werner. It was the only company that would hire me at my age and driving record (1 ticket, 21 years old). 😂 👍🏼

My choices are between Roehl and Swift. Both are close to where I live. Roehl is the primary choice because they pay you from day one, and it's comparable to my current pay in a warehouse. Swift has a good program, too. But yeah...those blue trucks!!

Hey Kevin, like Donnie b4 me, the first thing I do is get your update. Seems to be positive reinforcement no matter the struggle you've been given. I've had my CDL since January and haven't gotten the nerve to ditch my current career of 22 years to start a new one. I'm extremely ocd and am "spreadsheeted" out. I think I want a dedicated account so I have a routine. I want to reset at home in Kansas city so I'm stuck between Werner - Dollar General out of Moberly or Swift - Walmart out of Harrisonville. No recruiter will give a hard number other than the $1000 guarantee. Seems like u did a lot of homework b4 choosing swift and u at least stayed a year. I don't think moving to Florida helped your quest for miles, but at least the weather's nice. Would u be willing to share your spreadsheet?

Hey there! Yes, it's scary to let go of a 22-year career to start a different one with so many unknowns. So, first, to clarify, and I'm sure you are aware...Kevin chose Werner, not Swift. LOL... Which spreadsheet are you referring to? A year ago we compared Swift and Werner with handwritten notes. So, unfortunately, we don't have any official spreadsheets to share. All the info shows up in videos. I'll send you the one we did a year ago where we talk about why we chose Werner, not Swift. But they were our top 'contestants.' By now the exact info will be old anyway. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jF69Z56od9-HjbM Since you are looking to do resets in Kansas City, you will have limited choices. See what Werner says about Best Buy or Ferguson out of your area. We heard those are good accounts and Best Buy came with a minimum guarantee last time we looked. Dollar General will be a lot of physical labor and we hear that you'll be entering tight and awkward yards for delivery. But good money, yes. Also, remember that you can find other companies that might be better suited for Kansas City after you get a few months under your belt. PS We transferred to Florida for personal reasons. Didn't think it would help our miles. Now we have confirmed that. LOL! Good luck on your journey. Let us know how it goes.

I hated Werner and hope it burns to the ground 1. Pay was terrible. Miles were shorted all the time. 2. Truck was down for repairs all the time and they kept trying to make me starve to death by not paying me. 3. Their pet policy is Orwellian. They want to control and dictate every shot your pet has even if it’s a cat. They even want to charge you weekly for it. 4. The safety department were renta cops even if you had a perfect safety record. 5. The loads were always short miles or you were down for two days at a time between loads.

Check with your school. They should be able to connect you with your company of choice, whether it’s Werner or another company. If they don’t offer that service, just call Werner’s recruiting department. They’ll help you for sure.

Good for you! Big decision. Kevin’s school was supposed to help, but basically kept telling him Swift was the place to go. We contacted several companies ourselves and Kevin had about 7 pre-acceptance letters before even finishing school. So be pro-active, call different companies yourself, get pre-approval letters.
