A new study found that Gen Z is the soberest generation. I have seen more and more celebrities publicly discuss their sobriety. In my own life, I gave up drinking earlier this year. Meanwhile, companies are starting to cater to this cultural shift as bars continue adding more 'mocktails' to their menus. Why is the younger generation giving up alcohol?

Must have lived with me and my roommate! Actually began seeing him become demented from it. NEVER let his drawer in the fridge go empty (he kept the crisper drawer stocked. NEVER came home from work without a 12 pack of nattie ice, and had no less than 6-10 beers EVERY day for the 8 straight years I lived there (but it was longer than that). Bottle of vodka next to his bed, and carried a flask to his fast food job as it was all he could hold. It was terrible to watch. By the end of my time there, he had began mixing xanax with it and ended up stealing our rent money to buy his fix. Fortunately I got married a month after, so wifey and I already had an apartment set up.

I'm 37 now and stopped drinking when I was 23. I made the conscious decision to quit altogether for probably similar reasons to most people, I use to drink underage and when I turned 18 which is the legal age in Australia, I began binge drinking. I stopped abruptly mostly due to my father suffering from alcoholism when I was a teen and out of all the decisions I've made in my life quitting alcohol is definitely a highlight
@jainmelbourne

As an active participant in the Australian binge drinking culture, i 100 percent agree with you. from about 16 to 25, I’d be exaggerating to say my sober weekends could be counted on one hand, but you probably wouldn’t need much more than two hands and both feet. Met a girl who didn’t like drinking, and while she certainly didn’t pressure me to stop, I was suddenly conscious of the fact there would be a completely sober recollection of all of my nights out and in all probability, I wasn’t the sophisticated charmer I like to think I might have been. There was definitely an awkward couple of months for friends to adjust, and you absolutely find out who your mates are and who and just likes a drinking buddy, but it was easily the best decision I’ve ever made.
@CrackerBarrelKid551

@jainmelbourne that's a good point about learning who your true friends are. You start realizing that without the alcohol, you actually have nothing in common with a lot of them. I stopped drinking a couple years ago at 24. I missed it for social occasions for a couple of months, but now I'm so happy it plays no role in my life. The calories are also something crazy, and they add up fast. I think it's very difficult to get in good physical shape if drinking a lot every weekend

As someone who at one point in my life drank pretty heavily I have to tell all of you that you are not squares for not having a drink. Truth be told I've always looked up to people who had the kind of will power to say I'm not ever touching that. I have since slowed down on the drinks and its been well over a year since ive had one. Absolutely nothing good comes from alcohol, and I'd argue that more fun can be had by not drinking. You all have made a very wise choice.
@Walkop

@@amberpearce710 Alcohol has a long-proven track record of improving a few areas for quality of life, IF done in moderation. Wine is good for the gut and microbiome, for example. Socially, IN MODERATION, it can be a good thing as well. There are a lot of conflicting studies on alcohol, but I believe the general consensus is that it isn't anything even CLOSE to cigarettes or other drugs when used responsibly. My rule of thumb: any amount of alcohol that impedes my decision making to the point it has a negative effect on my own quality of life or the quality of life of others, is too much alcohol. That would obviously include the extremes, such as driving, etc, but also many more subtle things. This would also be different for other people - any alcoholic or someone with a history of alcohol abuse or addiction would have to be far more strict, and probably kick it all together, forever.

@@ThisIsMyRodrick Welllllllllllllllllllll... Alcohol was first developed by the ancient Egyptians to keep slaves docile and in control, it's also called alcohol poisoning, because it's actually poison, being drunk/drinking is really just pushing your body toward an acceptable threshold of toxicity. Also, studies have proven that it's significantly worse for a person than smoking weed (though that isn't great for other reasons). Point being: Yes, drinking is really bad for us, but if you want to drink, go for it (I have a drink now and then), nobody's stopping you. But it's quite the strong stance to say "wtf is everyone's problem, there's nothing wrong with it" without doing at least a little research first - because there's a lot wrong with it, lol. I'd like to point out, that it wasn't drinking / the alcohol that was the problem, it was the mindset and culture or combination, and for your mom the pain of losing her child, which put her into another mindset. Drinking is fine, but don't get drunk, don't drink and drive, don't drink to death from misery and pain, don't drink if you don't feel you can handle it, learn from your experiences, and to everyone reading this, don't do anything that could be / is an escape from your problems or feelings in life. I'm not advocating for alcohol, but just trying to show that it's not always drugs or alcohol that is the problem. Certain kinds of drugs definitely are, but that's for another thread. I'm sorry for your loses.

In my younger student days, there was a time when I would be out drinking every weekend, like everyone else I knew. My mum used to warn me that I had relatives who'd had serious problems with alcohol, some who had even died from it. I didn't listen obviously, as tends to happen at that age. I know now that I could easily have gone down a very bad path, but fortunately I kind of figured out on my own that it was no good, and eventually quit completely. I don't even drink socially now, not at all.

My body chemistry told me no to drinking because it only made me sick or sleepy, never put me in a feel good state. And it really opened my eyes to how many peoples' identity is so wrapped up in drinking... they only know how to socialize, party, or spend their leisure time in the presence of alcohol. When I was young, I drank regularly, parties on the weekend, over the summer, and I'm talking underage, 15, 16, 17... In all that time I only ever was really "drunk" twice. And I didn't like how I felt during or after. So I limited myself, I learned to say no to drinks, I learned my limit. I still like how certain alcohol tastes, so I'll have an occasional beer, but not run of the mill beer, craft, or imported British beer, I enjoy mixed drinks, but I literally go weeks or sometimes months without a drink, I bought a 26oz bottle of Rum, for Christmas eggnog in 2021, and there's still slightly over half a bottle left. I respect anyone who makes a choice to not drink, especially because of an issue they feel they have with alcohol, I would never denigrate someone for making that choice. I would expect the same courtesy.

Been there, just stop. Booze is absolutely soul draining. Change your mindset by changing your habits. If you drive by a liquor store on the way home take a different route. If you drink on Friday’s work extra hours that day. Change the patterns create new habits. You won’t just will yourself mentally, you need to force yourself physically and the mental part will come later on. I don’t tell myself I can’t drink, it’s just no longer in my life because I don’t have the same habits. Also I hate saying I’m sober, it instantly makes it a thing when you’re around other people, I just say I’m good when offered a drink and usually make a joke at my own expense. “I’m too good at drinking so I don’t do it anymore”. It seems to disarm the situation and doesn’t make it a thing other people get weird about. Change is grinding but that grind is growth. Find joy in the grind of life, delay the gratification, smile when life is hard. It’s cliche but its better than being a drunk.

Congratulations! This is fantastic! So refreshing to see a young conservative person speaking out about the awesomeness of sobriety. I went through a couple of rough years around 2007-2010. I had drank socially before that but during that time my marriage was crumbling, the company I worked for was bought out and my department was eliminated. My awesome career that I loved was gone. So, I decided to dive head first into the bottle. I ended up losing everything I had. When at rock bottom I finally had my eyes opened by the love of Jesus Christ and I have been sober since April of 2010. I urge people , whether you are a Christian or not, don’t run to the bottle. Now I believe that is wrong by Biblical standards but I know not everyone is a believer but when I sat down and took a good look at my life and morals I simply could not find one single positive thing or benefit of drinking alcohol. Fourteen months sober here! Stopped just a week before my 30th birthday, as I wanted to give a year of not drinking or using drugs a shot. I now take my sobriety very seriously and have no intention of going back. I had a bad relationship with myself, so I would imbibe, and alter my so consciousness in order to numb that discomfort of what was swirling around inside. I promise everything you are looking for at the bottom of the bottle or in an altered-state is already there in your heart, mind and soul. You just have to embrace the fear and ask yourself those hard questions. I don’t like to say that getting sober is what solely changed my life, but it’s a huge contributing factor, as it’s kept me sharp, focused and open to opportunities that I may have missed otherwise. If you’re asking yourself the question, deep down you already know the answer. If you’re having a hard time getting sober, I encourage you to stick with it. The hardest part is the first few weeks. After two months, I really felt the positive changes. Over a year later, I do not miss it at all whatsoever. No one ever regretted getting sober, and I promise the grass is greener, the sun is brighter, and the wind is invigorating. I believe in you, Bless you, and best of luck!

I'm a 17 year old guy, and my whole life I have always been against drinking. Every person on my fathers side (and many on my mothers) have fallen victim to addiction (with drugs and alcohol). Even my father was an alcoholic. But he stopped when I was younger cause he new it was unhealthy and that he needed to be around for us mentally and physically. I don't want to have to risk ruining my or my future children's lives due to drinking, so I have always sworn never to do it. Fortunately I have very like-minded friends who don't really have much of an interest in drinking, so it has been very easy for me (and hopefully will stay that way). Unfortunately, I do fear a social/dating life when I'm older as I know modern day it is very hard to have a social life and not drink. Congrats to you Brett for stopping, much respect. (By the way I am not sending hatred to anyone who drinks. You live your life, I understand many people can control it just fine.)

It's weird for me (and I believe most Muslims) to see so many people struggle with alcohol addiction, since most of us never even encounter it in our lives, so we don't have any desire whatsoever to drink. It's not something you often see or really think about. I'm glad the new western generations are sobering up, hopefully one day alcohol becomes completely forgotten about and banned like all other drugs. There are many, many other ways to enjoy life, celebrate, or deal with greif.

Just to be clear, while alcohol is haram (prohibited) for Muslims, it's still legal in most Muslim-majority countries, it's just a niche market with not that many users due to the cultural shame surrounding it and general disinterest in it. I believe even most non-Muslims living in Muslim-majority countries don't drink since they share the same culture.

It’s nice to hear about more people thinking this way. I have never tasted alcohol or done any drugs and never wanted to. Socially my friends know and knew that I don’t drink and they accept/ed that and never pushed it. I’m glad that I never did think I had to drink to have fun. I know alcohol isn’t really good for much so it pains me to see my friends drink when they could be perfectly fine without it. But I also don’t judge those that drink. It just leaves me torn between “hey you know you don’t have to drink to have fun let’s go do something fun without drinking” and sounding like their parent lecturing them on why they shouldn’t drink.
