I've recently seen a new phrase around TikTok, "girl dinner". The term 'girl dinner' seems to be first coined by a girl on TikTok who showed her meal which consisted of an assortment of tiny food items left over in her fridge. The trend is pretty funny, but of course, some have taken it and put a completely new meaning behind the term.

I am a 64 year old woman. I grew up eating like this maybe once every couple of months. We called it "cocktail party" dinner. I raised my daughters having cocktail party dinner for a fun occasional treat. They are all in their 30s now and if I invite them over for cocktail party dinner they get giddy. 😂

German dinners look similar. At least last millennia when I was a kid. Bread, butter, cheeses, cold cuts, cucumbers, tomatoes, anything you can create an open sandwich with. Warm meal was middle of the day. Unless my grandpa made his special fried potatoes. Then we even were called out of bed for it.

I was actually talking to my husband about this last night and I mentioned to him, you know if we weren't married I would be eating a pink lady apple and a couple corn chips for dinner every night. I have struggled with disordered eating/eating disorders since I was about 15 and as I said that to him I realized that being married and making food for us both has helped me recover from that mindset and way of living monumentally. I still struggle with it sometimes, but now my mindset has shifted and my desire to provide a good meal for him when he comes home after a long day at work far outweighs my desire to just "graze" or even skip dinner with the excuse that I "wasn't hungry", when I really just didn't want to eat because of years of unhealthy thinking and habits about food. Of course, as part of our marriage, I agreed to make the meals and I want to hold up my end of the deal as a principal on my part, but he is a very understanding guy who will come home from a 10-hour workday and make dinner if I feel sick or overwhelmed, so this is not something I have ever felt forced to do, and because of that, food means something so much more to me now. We share the workload and making meals for him now makes me excited to eat with him, excited to consume good food and try new things. I think that's pretty incredible, and 17-year-old me would have never believed that was possible.

In Slavic countries this is a very common family dinner. Sourdough bread, hard cheese, pickles, then depending on the season fruit (apples, grapes, watermelon...) or in winter maybe some mayo, smoked fish... Around Hungary a very popular choice is a hard sausage. Yesterday and the day before I had Sourdough bread, hard sausage and hard aromatic cheese. My wife and my son had it as well. The sausages are often home-made from animals raised by the same person who prepared the sausage, in the hills you can get home-made cheese. Fruit from your own trees and bushes, pickles made at home, fish caught by a family member... This is about as "natural" as you can get.

My husband and I have been married for almost 12 years and then together almost 14 years he kind of had an idea about what I used to call compartmentalized dinner like you eat it and pieces and I introduced him to like what everybody’s now calling “girl dinner” after we got married and he loves it. When that’s our dinner. He loves that but it’s usually a night that he hasn’t been working heavily in the sun and we have four kids. I have to take that into consideration, so does he. And it’s actually not that far removed from like history to eat like a heavy meal in the middle of the day and then eat a lighter meal before bed. People are trying too hard to read too much into this sometimes your body just needs a little something not anything heavy

As a straight married woman with children, my family enjoys "girl dinner" quite often. Our after church Sunday lunch is usually "girl dinner", but we call it snack lunch. If we've had a super busy day and we (being both myself and my husband) are exhausted and don't want to cook, we have snack lunch for dinner. My kids love it, my husband loves it, and I love it. I've never felt like I'm some martyr who had to give up my life because I chose to get married and have kids. I actually love my life 100% more and am so happy to do life with my best friend and have "girl dinner" with him and the children we had together. You want "girl dinner"? Then have "girl dinner!" A little insight from the old world here. In Austria/Bavaria Girl dinner is basically a normal "Brettljausn", which is a lunch/dinner on a wooden plate serving cold meats, sausages & cheese along some bread. The majority of our households have this kind of dinner at least 2-3 times a week. I grew up on girl dinner basically. Girl dinner is in a way a central European thing. (Since the medival times)

We grab whatever is in the fridge or pantry and everyone is happy. Sometimes we do it more than just on Wednesday. I love cooking for my family, and I also don't feel like a slave to it- win/win. My sister would definitely endorse that meal. It's what she has always preferred to eat. Cheese is mostly fat, and dietary fat - especially animal fat - is frowned upon these days. But that's probably due to an overdose of fake science. Animal fat is actually good for you, and so are naturally fermented pickles. Butter is good for you too. Guys would get behind this if you add meat. In fact, some people would call it a sandwich or hamburger once you add meat.

On Sunday night, my husband and I occasionally partake in a "Girl's Dinner," consisting of various favorite cheeses, grapes, figs, cornichons, prosciutto, a baguette, a fine wine or champagne, etc. By no means is it a frugal dinner, actually quite the contrary, nor is is really healthy, although quite high in protein. But the funniest thing about it is that should that be the night we are enjoying this rather extravagant meal, it will also be the night that my mother-in-law phones from the other side of the country and is appalled that her son is having to eat "cheese and crackers" for dinner. No matter how old they get, mothers will never get over taking care of their baby boys. 🥰

Grazing in my family was food between meals. My mom had four boys between the ages of 18-10 in the house at once, and three girls (but they ate so little it was nothing in comparison). So during her once a week shopping, she usually got 20 pounds of sliced turkey, salami, and chicken (60lbs). She also got a couple of pounds of roast beef for my dad's lunches. She bought about half as much cheese, and jars of dill pickles. This was during the 80's thankfully. I don't even want to think what it would cost to feed three 6ft boys going through puberty at once nowadays. Let alone doing it for over a decade with four of them.

Dinner rolls, PB and J, cold cuts, Bothwell cheese, coffee and milk. I always reckoned that since Mennonites were farm people the women came up with Faspa so when the men came in from the day's work they would be distracted by the Faspa and not pick at the proper dinner food that they were getting ready. I lived on a cattle ranch during summer until high school and we had a four meal day. A light breakfast (usually toast with peanut butter and jam), lunch (eggs, bacon, pancakes etc), dinner (cheese, crackers, salami), and finally supper (what most would call dinner, a heavier meal with meat and veggies). This helped us through the 100 degrees plus days of summer.

I also loved the point you made about it being an honor to look after the person you're with if you're in a healthy relationship. He goes out to work and I stay home and manage the home. Not that those dinners are bad, just that many people struggle with intuitive eating and may not be getting enough nutrients and calories. "Girl meals" is done at least 3 days a week at my house not just stopping with dinner. My mother in law has had a lot of her intestine removed as well as a portion of her stomach so nutrition is something I try to pack I to every meal and since she can't eat as much they tend to be smaller meals throughout the day. I've struggled with weight my entire life it getting worse when I was bed bound for a year. We now do 5 meals a day per the nutritionist recommendations. I've lost 120 lbs in 2 years, my son has slimmed up something he struggles with due to medication and my daughter has noticed a change in her energy levels. Decent breakfast between 6 to get us started, mid morning snack around 10 consisting of random fruit pick of the week, lunch at noon which is usually not much more than the snack, dinner at 5 and a small snack around 8 so it has time to settle before dinner. Tunafish, apples and crackers are a fast and healthy light meal which can be turned into tuna melts for those more hungry eaters

When I've had a long day I give my kids a "plate of tiny things" for dinner. It's essentially the kid version of a charcuterie board and they love it. What they don't know is that's the dinner mom makes when she's DONE. 😂

My dad has made “appetizer plates” for years. It was what he fed my siblings and I when my mom was somewhere. Pickles, olives, cheese and lunch meat 😂

Legit lmfao at Brett hyping it up making it sound like a bomb ass lunch-able. "Block of cheddar, crackers, some ham. It's very fun." Yes I'm having fun eating my own lunch-able I made.

I can't eat a meal without any carbohydrates. Mainly rice. It just doesnt feel right and would lead me to snacking instead which I try to avoid

Yeah that's just my "lazy dinner." I ate cheese, summer sausage and Ritz for dinner just the other day. I didn't have time to cook and it was getting late
