Couple of years ago I saw a broken down bike on motorway hard shoulder and stopped to see if I could help. It was a black Kawasaki Z1100 with a battery so flat it couldn't turn over the engine, and because the carriageway was uphill, he couldn't get enough speed up to bump start it alone. Two of us together pushed this monster up the hard shoulder fast enough for the rider to dump the clutch, get the engine to fire, then clutch in and rev it hard to keep it alive while I ran back down the hill to get his helmet and my own bike. It was then that I saw the 3M reflective sticker (white on a white helmet) saying POLICE. Pulling up beside him and handing his helmet over, I noticed POLICE in black embroidery on his black leather jacket. Sneaky. I kept his bike revving while he put on his helmet and gloves. "I owe you one mate" were his final words before he tore off.

I need to get out there, I have raced motocross since I was 5 until I was 32. I joined Army and got my HGV class 1 licenses and now drive professionally for a fuel tanker company. There is a certain comradery between fellow bikers and HGV drivers and we understand each other I have noticed, especially me being a biker. Long overdue I got my full bike license, with a means to ride with my father who was also a biker naturally and had a Yamaha VMAX. Unfortunately he passed away before our plans to ride to Scotland as father and son. He left me his Yamaha VMAX 1200. I want to ride in his honour now I miss him so much. He really taught me how to ride and race motocross as an ex motocross rider himself and I won many races from his nurturing and teachings. I'm 38 now but I want to keep his VMAX for sentimental purposes but also want another bike. I need to get out there for him. Seeing this video has really gave me the kick up the ass I need. I love it. Thank you.

HGV driving and motorbikes somehow seem to go hand in hand and lots of truckers are bikers too. They way I teach people too drive HGV is so similar to how people are taught to ride bikes as in the forward planning and awareness skills required to survive the other shall we say road users instead of idiots out there. Obviously had one of the oncoming vehicles hit them they would have been classed as pulling out in front of oncoming but there is no way they were anywhere near to pulling out in front of you. Nice relaxing video. I'm a big Deauville fan. I'm on my third (one 650 and two 700s) and have covered about 200k miles on them, mostly long distance commuting and a bit of business. Now retired (early) and looking at other bikes but so far I've not found anything as comfy or practical, especially as we're hoping to do a bit of two-up touring. I really wish Honda still produced them as I'd buy another like a shot. There's rumours of a new NT1100 coming with the Africa Twin engine, but that'll no doubt be too bloody expensive, and perhaps a bit far removed from the original idea - especially as it won't be a shaftie anymore. Guess I'll hang on to DV No.3 for a while longer.. :-)

According to rule 129 of the highway code it states that ( except for a few exceptions) we must not cross a double solid white line. Is it not a mute point to say that although my panniers may have crossed the line my bike wheels had not and therefore I had not actually been in contravention if rule 129 as it states that you shall not cross and my wheels had not crossed. Not looking to be argumentative just seeking clarity. As a HGV instructor I have to teach my students to be ready to cross solid white lines when exiting a minor road for example and to do so with extreme caution but if that's is the only way we can get a 60ft plus vehicle out of a minor road then that is acceptable. I am aware that rule 129 says we can cross solid white lines when turning into a drive way etc but would my panniers crossing the white constitute a breach of this rule if my tyres, the contact patch I have with the tarmac, is still on the correct side of the lines.

@Neil Howarth, your not the only qualified observer watching this, Biker1k was just about perfect with the exception of a few minors, one being forgetting the 2 second rule even when riding staggered, Red and Green since 1988 and ROSPA gold.

Each to his own taste, of course, but that piece I've heard on a hundred other videos - to the point where it has now become excruciating!!!! @@biker1k I agree with you, and I would only go those sort of speeds on track days, or on autobahns, but slow speeds on a GSX1000R are very uncomfortable for the rider (wrists, legs, back etc). That’s why your video shows riding with hands off the handlebars. I assume “ram” was an automated spell-checker! ;-) I rode a Suzuki GT185 in the 1970’s, two or three Honda CB250’s, a Suzuki GT250 in the 80’s, a Honda CBR1000F for 4 years in the 90’s, followed by an ST1100A Pan European for 16 years, and I have a clean licence, so I’m not a teenager anymore.
