These are really cool reasons to have a favourite primarch, not just 'he was the best because he did this cool stuff' I'm a big fan of Perturabo because he strove his entire life to make his father proud by doing the tasks no other primarch would, and got no love of glory from it. Has a really in depth inner struggle that essentially breaks him. #PerturaboDidAllTheHardWork #AllHeNeededWasAPatOnTheBack

Agreed. Perturabo is another primarch that is really fascinating on a character level. Once again, if the emperor hadn't been such a complete asshole to the guy and just given him some respect he could have stayed loyal. He only went with the heresy because he felt the only guy he could trust was Horus (pro tip - you can't trust Horus).

I quite like Mortarion's story, he's a Primarch in a place that he really doesn't want to be. He never chose to have the Death Guard fall under Nurgle's control, that was all Typhus, and now Typhus has the rotten balls to claim himself superior to his own Primarch. In fact, Morty hates the decay and general warp corruption of his legion. He actively rebels against Nurgle by having his chambers and weapons pristine and sharp, unlike the rest if his legion who are riddled with decay from rusty helmet to pus-filled boot. Mortarion hates what he is and hates who he serves, but try as he might to deny it, the taint of the Plague Father has permeated through him completely. As for the Horus Heresy, he had valid reasons for hating psykers and warpcraft, and most of all, he had valid reasons for hating the Emperor for his hypocrisy in the Council of Nikea, especially after being used as a pawn to advocate the restriction of psykers despite the Emperor being one himself.

Konrad Curze is best because he was justice and punishment in the purest from Emperor: ordered one of his sons to burn down a whole planet full of innocent people because they thought he was a god and ADMIRED HIM while at the same time make those other sons who built and inspired those people stand on their knees in humilation before him Konrad Curze: destroyed a planet where people murder every 9 seconds, rape in every 10 and so on because the emperor didnt care about murderers and justice instead he cared about killing people that admired him in a diffirent way... also after Curze destroys a planet full of criminals he is the one being judged and punished for killing "innocent" people. this is why almost every loyalist marine is a hypocrite. I'm late, but I hope you get a chance to read this. 40K is satire, and absurd with it's level of camp and gravitas - but I truly do like some the characters. Lorgar is good for all the things you mention, and I admire his relationship with Angron. Those two seemed to have a connection of a sort. Angron is a tragic character, and his famous quote about Horus and Emperor, and how he died on the ridge of his homeworld all those years ago - he confided that to Lorgar. I think because he trusted him, and trusted that if anyone would chronicle that bit of information, it would be him. I believe they had a good relationship, and they even fought together in Ultramar. In fact I believe the reason Lorgar chanted the incantation to transform Angron into a Daemon prince was to save him. He would have died otherwise. Perturabo is another one that's tragic. He never wanted to be a soldier, he was a builder and architect first and foremost. He did his duty and did the jobs nobody else wanted to do. Self Righteous cunts like Russ and Johnson would never stoop to that level, they had better things to do. Perturabo was the one who built the amphitheater where the council of Nicea took place. It _shamed_ him knowing it was used for that. He didn't build it for that purpose. He wanted plays, musicals, and stories to be told there. He was a tinkerer and perhaps a social outcast. When he was with Fulgrim and was being tempted by him, Perturabo simply stated that nobody would know what to tempt him with.... because nobody cared to ask. That's incredibly sad. There is no brotherhood in that. It's a big joke. The Emperor's genes, his character, mannerisms, and traits were all passed down to the primarchs. Some of them inherited negative traits that caused them negative affect. Kurze being the foremost example. But he's hardly the only one. In the end, The Emperor takes sole responsibility for the Heresy. He should have seen it coming.

My favorite is not the most interesting, in anybodies mind. Including my own. My favorite is Rogal Dorn. Straight-Laced, flagpole up the arse, Spartan Dorn. I like him. Because even though he never really had the internal struggle that Lorgar or any of his other brothers had, and he was never and will never be the poster-boy like Girlyman... he's stubborn. Determined. And loyal. I adore his simplicity, the purity of his purpose, and I love what he is. He is a military man, through and through. Girlyman is the perfect little statesman, all the other brothers have there big underlying stories, motives, and faults... but Dorn is the Sergeant out of all of them. That's all he is, that's all he needs to be... and he knows it, he perfects it.

I have yet to read the Horus Heresy series but (from 2nd ed codex onwards) I found the World Eaters as a legion to have a beautiful story - their martial pride was perverted into something dark and their having lost their minds to fury spoke to me. However, I found Lorgar and the Word Bearers to be the most interesting of the legions because if only the Emperor had said to himself, "I've got 20 sons and 19 of them are just fine conquering the GALAXY in my name, Lorgar wants to build churches and humanity has always needed those no matter what the materialists say", well, then Lorgar would've stayed loyal - arguably the loyalest of them all. Lorgar's treatment by the Emperor represented to me the Emperor's biggest mistake, and he made a *bunch* of those!

I think the Emperor treated Lorgar that way on purpose. He knew what would happen and actually planned on it happening so it would lead to the culling of the Primarchs post Great Crusade. Word Bearers represent! I think to the contrary, ever since landing on Colchis, Lorgars innocence is a cover for his own understanding of chaos and the emperor. He is fundamentally good intentioned at heart (to begin with) gradually racing to the bottom to demonstrate his own rendition of universal truth. That could suggest that Lectitio Divinitatus was a ruse by chaos to tempt and damn the Emperor if he embraces divinity, or it is a legitimate boost to His powers through faith (hence spreading of the imperial cult by rogue traders for instance). After Monarchia there was room for the pantheon once more in Lorgars vision of humanity's apotheosis. I believe Lorgar as space pope was an intended role, but High Terra made him cease proselytizing to prevent Doom of the Eldar 2: Homo Sapiens Boogaloo before the golden throne was complete and Big E ready to fight/starve the gods directly.

My favorite book from the Horus Heresy is the First Heretic for the very reasons you talk about. I found that his arguments for the Emperor being a God actually very logical, and the more that you delve down into it, the more you see that he really wasn't entirely misguided in his initial vision. If only he would have listened to Argel Tal more. Also love Guilleman for the same reason. He saw a vision where Space Marines could be more than just soldiers, and I think that if you really look at the Ultramarines post Calth, you see that hope and vision utterly shattered in them. Watching the dream of the future die in flame and corruption.

You make a great argument for Lorgar and Arch made a great one for Conrad Curz, but the best Primarch has to be Horus Lupercal. He was first and foremost a diplomat who only used force when he felt it was his only real option. He was also great at playing to the strengths of his allies and using those strengths to get what he saw as the best possible outcome. His only real failing was a lack of self-confidence; he often felt that the Emperor would do a better job at most situations and judged himself as inferior when he failed to live up to that standard in his own eyes. When under the strain of running the Crusade, a really close brush with death, the revelations of his "perfect" father's flaws, some bad influences among those he trusted and his own feelings of inadequacy it is no wonder he snapped and lashed out.

@Alpharius936 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on your points about Lorgar. To me he always seemed the most "people person" of them all, and that took him through a journey no other primarch could fully understand or appreciate, even Magnus. But I think my favourite primarch is going to be Perturabo, because, as you said, he "resonates" well with me. He's an engineer, a visionary, who wanted to dedicate his life to providing humankind with marvellous technologies and cities, and thus improve quality of life in such a large empire, and bring happiness and better lives that way. But then, he was taken away from this and all his expertise put into war and military engineering. All his efforts, all his knowledge, would go to bring death and ruin to whoever the Emperor deemed an enemy, even if it was other humans. And on top of that, both him and his warriors were never acknowledged for their efforts and sacrifices in the blind and cruel battlefields where an unseen, random artillery shell would end your life before you even knew, just becoming another anonymous casualty, a number in a list, a statistic. Not just that, they were never acknowledged the moral sacrifice they were doing. And that, unsurprinsingly, resulted in a cold, irreversible hate that put them firmly into Horus' side. As an engineer myself, who also wants to create technology for the betterment of mankind (in my case space engineering), I can really empathise with Perturabo on how could he feel once his fate was revealed to him. I doubt my current self could last long if my country was suddenly in war and I found myself forced to design weapons, combat vehicles and defenses, and I simply don't know where that would take me, but it would surely be a dark place eventually. Edit: by this last paragraph I didn't mean I would become a heartless killer! I meant I would probably develop a strong depression, at the very least.
@primroan53546 жыл бұрын
Perturabo is a tragic character, through and through. What really his me was to learn that he built the amphitheater where the council of Nicea was held. And to learn it shamed him to unimaginable degree that such a thing was held there. He wanted it to have plays, musicals, operas, and all sorts of stories that the people could enjoy. Him being from a planet and culture drawn heavily from ancient Greece. Then you really understand when he was with Fulgrim, and Fulgrim was trying to tempt him. Perturabo simply states that he can't be tempted, because nobody even knows what to tempt him with - nobody cared enough to ask. If that doesn't hurt you, man. There's no brotherhood there. It's all an empty joke.
@FordF4706 жыл бұрын
Necroledo well, as someone in a very similar position, helping your country design military technology that could protect and save your country and fellow countrymen's lives should be an honor (provided your country isn't ruled by a bloodthirsty tyrant). The Iron Warriors didn't hate the war tech aspect, they hated the type of nasty siege warfare and the lack of any acknowledgement for their sacrifices and triumphs. Pert wanted to also build beautiful things in addition to the war tech but was never allowed to as there was always a battle to be fought and that wore on him and made him more and more bitter
@Alpharius936 жыл бұрын
I totally understand your point of view, although personally, if I ended up designing military technology I would prefer to do it to protect humanity as a whole, rather than a single country (although of course this would mean having an external threat and uniting against it, which might or might not happen in the future). About the Iron Warriors and Perturabo, I'd say they would prefer not to ever build a single turret, but I guess that is open to interpretation.
@FordF4706 жыл бұрын
Necroledo I'm an American so that heavily influences my view on the matter haha, but it becomes more clear if you read all the Iron Warriors books as well as the ones where they make cameos. I agree Pert wants to create beautiful centers of learning and art more than anything else, but if you read enough of the stories you start to get the sense he sees parts of warfare as intricate intellectual puzzles. He comments several times how there is beauty in efficiency and overcoming an enemies defenses through intellect
@Alpharius936 жыл бұрын
Good point! I can understand him on that too, as an engineer I find military tech interesting, as another "intellectual puzzle" as you put it. But I feel if I was forced to work on that instead of more peaceful tech, and then not being recognized for it, I would feel like Perturabo did. Although who knows, we're discussing a demi-god fictional characer anyway xD

Hey Kiri, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your videos. I admire the fact that you are able to talk so openly about your mental health. Just wanted to throw that out there. Now, favorite Primarch. That would have to be Lion el'Jonson. I just find him interesting and I really like his psyche and how he functions. To be honest I believe that Jonson suffers from a lot of anxiety and insecurity. There are like two sides to his personality. The wild beast (which he tries to hide) and the arrogant noble (which in my opinion is just a front, a mask he hides behind). I believe he was afraid and concerned about what others thought of him because of his background and therefore he felt the need to cover it up. And he wouldn't have been wrong. Horus says something along the lines of: "He grew up in the forest, no better than a wild beast. Is that who you want leading you?" And after his fight with Russ, when he knocks Russ out, I think it is only partly because Russ is laughing at him, I think it has more to do with the fact that Russ made Jonson drop the mask, he brought out the beast in Jonson and made Jonson feel like an animal. I would also argue that this might be why Jonson frowns upon Russ and his Space wolf, while they openly embrace their savage and feral side, Jonson hides his. I also think this could be why Jonson never tells anyone about the curse of the Wulfen after he finds out about it. Because in some ways he could understand it. Suddenly he could sympathize with Russ in a way. He knew what it felt like wanting to hide a side of yourself and thats why he keeps that secret for Russ. Huh... this became a little longer than I intended. Sorry about that.

I really enjoyed Perturabos personality, he's a craftsman, a tinkerer and even an artist with how amazing of a engineer he is..but it was squandered for the sake of defending trenches of already subjugated worlds. Glory wasnt his legions place in the Imperium and slowly he started to look at the glory drenched legions such as the Ultramarines and Blood Angels.

Can I get an AMEN brother! Who can claim to have been as thorough with his campaigns and claim such loyalty from the population of their captured worlds? Who can claim to be as loved by his legionaries as Lorgar? Who can claim he fought as hard as Lorgar before Ullanor in the Emperor’s name? Who loved the Emperor the most before [REDACTED] as Lorgar? And who cared for his sons and captured planets populations as Lorgar? #LorgarBestPrimarch
@LCliffhanger6 жыл бұрын
he was loved because he brought them a religion, fulgrim was massively loved, alpharius and omegon were heavily thorough, every legion loved there primarch, Lion, leman, khan, alpharius, dorn and fulgrim were massively loyal to the emperor, horus didnt even bother to try turning lion, many tried to turn lion and failed and even a warp being was amused by how utterly loyal he was to the emperor, fulgrim massively idolised him until a demon started fuckin with him, horus loved him till eribus and demons started fuckin with him, leman and vulkan loved him, leman, lion, guilliman, khan and especially corax loved there sons and vulkans main thing is his caring for the civilian population and sanguinius is perhaps the most beloved primarch by anyone ever, he's the arch angel of the imperium

Ferrus gets no love. But he's one of the best. He's a soldier through and through, you tell him to attack that planet and he'll do it without question. He's blunt and direct, but not as much as Angron. He strives for more, but not as much as Guilliman. He knows when to exercise tactics, and when to use pure brute force. Ferrus rocks.
@TheUrizen6 жыл бұрын
True. But he tends to be ignored, as he was the first victim of betrayal among the primarchs, we don't have a lot of info on him. It's all mostly stuff from before the Heresy.
@leakycheese6 жыл бұрын
Billy Bones Indeed... the other thing about Ferrus is he does what needs to be done and never gave into excess in his conquests. I’d argue he is the ultimate warlord primarch, perfectly suited to the task of the Great Crusade and would probably have adapted well to life in the Imperium if the heresy had not happened. It is a rich irony / bitter tragedy that he was the first of his brothers to perish....

What's ironic to the max is that Lorgar was almost unanimously loved by everyone, and it was for very human reasons. He respected people, and his preaching's were always so immensely well received it brought so many good people together. Then the Emperor swoops in, and orders it all literally burned down to the ground. I challenge anyone to not worship chaos after such a traumatic, and spiteful act on their parent's part.

He's definitely my favorite primarch. Demski-Bowden did a great job making him an interesting character with intriguing dreams and hopes for the future. I hate how one of the more recent books--can't remember the name--made him connive against Horus in a silly way. It didn't seem in his character to be so incompetent. That was more of a Kor Phaeron kind of move

I've been quietly admiring how open you are with discussing problems so many of us do silently, i expect you have the perfect platform and approach for talking about the issue so massive respect for doing it a damn good way. However this stood out when you recognise through the bitterness of their comment towards you they're doing it because of their own problems and actively defend them ... your a true gentleman. As much as my gut reaction is to add to the other offers to bury my boot in the original commenter the truth is the poor chap probably needs a hug and a chat. Oh and to keep on topic, Fulgrim is literally perfect. Plus he can pull off pink, takes a real man to wear pink.
@NicheInterests826 жыл бұрын
In a similar vein, I've always had a liking for Perturabo, who lived and breathed creation, but was condemned to destroy. He created countless clockwork constructs simply because, he laid blue prints for the grand works of architecture on par with Dorn's , but time and time again, he was was commanded to wage the most brutal wars of the great crusade, and all the time, he put aside any emotion at all, because he was a primarch who saw the world in angles and percentages, but emotion was a variable he couldn't afford. He did everything asked of him, putting aside his hunger for recognition, bearing grievous injuries to his legion, and finally putting his homeworld to the torch, and in doing so becoming the monster he'd ran from so long. Because his father asked him to. I haven't been moved by any other primarch's story as I have been my the Lord of Iron.

I, personally, love Perturabo, pretty much for the same reason you like Lorgar: he looks human to me. He's not, in fact he might be one of the less human of the primarchs, with that "already knew everything at birth" stuff. But he grew on Olympia bot wanting to fight or discuss others, only making it because his "father" asked him to. He grew into a democrat, someone with principles. And with the coming of the Emperor he was shown his dream was impossible. He would have to fight for an Emperor, and he was given the most gruesome tasks, and he endured it. Untill he didn't. He is the Primarch that broke. The one most suited for that job, capable of reducing his sons to mere numbers and using them to calculate victory, and he went mad from it. He was the less human of them all, but carried such a burden he buckled as any mortal would have done. And that's why I love his character.

Fulgrim has always been my favorite. He's a completely irredeemable traitor but he went through some interesting struggles in his fall and I love it! He has a really amazing record fighting other primarchs yet he also got literary raped by his own men but in true slanesh fashion he likes it lol. His horus heresy book is so interesting! @KiriothTV Yeah he's cool, but when he betrayed Horus & Horus literally gave him a chance to pick up his weapon, and fight. Horus literally told Lorgar "Dad didn't give you a chance, so I will give you a chance", Lorgar said no, and that he was afraid of the dark thing Horus had become. I thought it would have made Lorgar cooler if he fought Horus & right as Horus goes to finish him that's when Lorgar turns into a Daemon Prince you know like the Chaos Gods would have saved him for later.

If the Great Crusade won, they would have to cut off Sanguinius wings to fit him into the Emperor's vision. Otherwise his "beautiful hawk boi" image would inspire the Imperial citizens to believe there are real Angels and it would be Monarchia all over again.
@skywatcheradept6 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that Malcador said in the "First lord of the Imperium" audio that they were planning to get rid of all of the Primarchs after they did their job, just like they did with the Thunder Warriors. Because "The Imperium is not for the post-humans but for mankind". So the hawk boi would be lucky if they cut off his wings and let him live at all.
That plot point was retarded on all levels, besides he says he lied at the end. Probably just to help his friend cope with the situation before dying

Lorgar was born and raised in an extremely religious culture. This shaped him, even when he was going against it. That's the thing War Hammer seems to keep trying to show, everyone and everything is trapped by circumstance, even the god beings. The real villain is the universe itself.

great explanation for your favoritism! And I think the beauty of the lore is how basically any Primarch has the potential to speak to us in such a way. I watched your Angron video and totally agree with that as well! Reading the Heresy novels currently, reading who and what Horus was before his fall from grace - an event I think he had no desire for, but was rather forced upon him externally, much like Lorgar as you said in this video - makes what follows so, so, SO much more tragic. Horus was loving, charismatic, vivacious, brilliant. He was everything we could want in a protector of humanity and a paragon of civilization, and his descent is so heartbreaking. Great video!

Unpopular, I know, but Guilliman is my favorite. He's boring, he's formulaic, he's not charismatic, he's not even particularly a great combatant comparatively. In the past, he's been described as perfect, and he had an easy time coming into power but I think it makes him more intriguing, especially as time goes on. And in several of the more recent novels, his flawed nature has been explored more in depth. He's uncomfortable with the position of leadership he assumes in the Imperium, both before and after the Heresy, but nonetheless assumes it. He's not a particularly exciting Primarch (save for when he's punching people to death in space), but his the seemingly more mundane abilities that make him so capable strike me as much more compelling than figures like Russ, Angron, the Khan, Ferrus, Fulgrim, the Lion, and others. He's good at what he does, which is an organizational and institutional master, besting opponents more superior in many ways through the genius of command and structure. I don't like that he's seemingly had plot armor in the series, but it's more about his character and abilities as a commander and leader (and the fact that other Primarchs hate an otherwise not-so-bad guy) that makes him so interesting. Close second is Perturabo, and strangely I think he and Guilliman share many of the same characteristics.
@samb.81345 жыл бұрын
Favourite primarch for me has to be Fulgrim, although I also love Horus. Fulgrim is such a tragically flawed character, it just feels that in his quest for perfection he lost himself, and I think it really helps that he instantly regrets it when he kills Ferrus and THAT'S what dooms him in the eyes of the Imperium but also gives a hope for redemption some day, as you really get the sense that Fulgrim (much like Horus) got tricked and manipulated into doing the Chaos Gods' bidding. Fulgrim was a brilliant novel, and really sold me on that Primarch, which wasn't a given because before that I just kind of assumed he'd be like Lucius, but taller...!
