Mech here. The 5.7 is an extremely stout and strong motor. But I wouldnt add the supercharger, it will shorten the service life of the vehicle. The trans in these trucks are very overbuilt and very strong but you will bugger your planetaries if you start adding boost and lead footing it. They are built to be kept stock. Definitely the most reliable trucks on the road!

Downsides to supercharging: lowers your reliability, lowers your mileage, increases your weight in the front which will reduce offroad capability especially in snow. More weight = more sliding. You might want to keep the engine bone stock.

With a 5.7 V-8 you should have plenty of power. The only reason to supercharge (I would prefer a turbocharger) is if you are towing a heavy trailer through hills, or you operate at very high altitudes.

1) For a prepper do not supercharge! The reasons are as follows: A) one more thing to break, the complexity of the engine increases so the chance of something go wrong and B) this will lock you out of the gas alternatives which brings me to no2 2) Gas engines have their multi fuel as well. In fact the bio-gas is actually ethanol ( you will find in spirts like vodka ) and if you process it good enough to reach 97% than it will work instead of gas pretty well. More over the engine oil is much simpler to craft. I personally don't know how to home brew engine oil but google may know something about this. Safe driving!

Things I hate about my Tundra Limited; 1. so big parking is often a problem, length, side to side and height sometimes 2. Fuel economy is very poor. 3. Toyota Canada Service has an issue right now getting parts and fixing it under warranty, I suspect the tariffs. 4. Heavy tailgate. Things I love: 1. nice big passenger compartment to carry the family. 2. Easy seat adjustment. 3. I added a Leer bed cap and bed rug, best thing ever to did, keeps stuff dry and doesn’t slide around.

This is a long list. One thing you need to do immediately is get a full size spare under there and start doing 5 tire rotations. That is item number 1. Metal front and rear bumpers are a must for being a prepper. You never know if you'll have to push cars or debris out of the way after shtf to clear the road, and you want your bumpers to be able to do that. Of course the auxiliary fuel tank, or jerry can mounts is a must. Find a way too to put a fresh water tank mount somewhere so that you always have at least 3-5 gallons of fresh water stored on your truck. Gun rack/ safe is a great idea. Recovery gear, like an axe and shovel are crucial for any prepper BOV. You already mentioned that a winch was in your future. Rock sliders are something to consider. Roof rack is a must for sure, unless you plan on pulling a trailer. Dump the tono cover you have currently and go for something that maximizes cargo space, unless you plan on towing a trailer. A different bed cover that is flush with the cab will maximize the "dry" interior cargo space, and will allow for a full size roof rack as well. I doubt that in shtf you are bringing your quad with you; but I may be mistaken. Ditch lights and light bars are a good option for when all the street lights go out and you need to see all around you. HAM Radio affixed in you cockpit somewhere could prove invaluable, or a CB. Invest in a dual battery system, daisy chained together to maximize your on board power storage. Install a cut off circuit so that you can run electronics with the engine off, but the flow of electricity shuts off after one battery is drained so that you can always start your engine. I would not affix solid solar panels to the roof; instead I would keep a solar film/ folding panel in the cab, and have the hookups enabling you to charge the dual/ triple battery system you install. I would also keep a vehicle bag/ get home bag in the truck so that you can hike out if something happens to the truck. Turbo chargers/ super chargers are hard on engines, and it will shorten its life. I would not install one if this is a doomsday vehicle. Definitely get all the skid plates and armor you can put on there for sure. Those are my thoughts.

For 12 miles a gallon you should have bought a 7.3l diesel F250. My Overland bug-out rig is a 1999 F250 on 35s with a 4 inch lift. it actually gets 17 miles now to the gallon with aftermarket upgrades. The thing is built up and decked out to the teeth and either going to try it list everything on it but I'm just going to say that that thing has been the most reliable truck on earth to me. 20 year old truck and it still kicks the hell out of a lot of the modern ones. I love the sound of that whistling turbo I can keep up 85 miles an hour on the highway but when push comes to shove I have more torque and power than everybody else. the F250 may not have as much space as a tundra I'm not sure but I'd be willing to bet that it comes damn close because it's got more space than any other person's truck I've been in except for the Tundra Crewmax

Low profile, no wind noise under 110kph, lots of versatility, accessories (but these are relatively pricier; they get you with the affordable roof, though). Skip the supercharger. It can do stuff to/void your engine warranty plus you’d need Premium gas. You have enough torque, that’s what matters - it’s not a Lambo

No reason to supercharge it unless you want the cool factor. If you needed more towing power then you would have bought a diesel powered Ford, Chevy or Dodge. Supercharged/turbo engines can be great for certain applications, however that extra pressure will cause parts to wear and fail faster vs a naturally aspirated engine over time and just another item to service. The Tundra is a nice truck that I'm sure you'll be happy with. I did the same thing - traded a Tacoma for a 1794 a couple years ago. I didn't particularly want the 1794 package (although it is nice) but I needed something a bit larger to tow with - immediately, and it had 5-6k on the odo as a certified pre-owned. Although it is probably fine, people do it all the time, I didn't want to roll right off the lot and tow a trailer across the country. As for "mods," the two I'd suggest doing is 1) Replacing the plastic oil filter housing (current generation Tundras went away from the traditional spin-on filter) with an aluminum one. The plastic is fine, but I just prefer the aluminum variant, and I have always done my own oil changes. On several of the Toyota forums, there is a bit of discussion about this, along with the appropriate part numbers, should you consider swapping this part. Of course, the special tool to safely/easily remove the housing is basically a must-have, either way, and if you don't change your own oil, make sure the person doing it has the tool. 2) A locking gas cap. Yea, it is a bit inconvenient at the pump to spend a few seconds every time to put in the key. I started using the locking gas caps about about a decade ago when the economy in the midwest USA got really bad, gas prices were high, and yes, gas theft became a problem. If someone really wanted to tamper with a gas tank, the locking cap wouldn't totally stop them...but it is a cheap barrier that might succeed in having them look elsewhere (in a group running from bears...you don't have to be the fastest, as the saying goes). Other than those two things, I added a cap for the back and installed a CB radio (Uniden Bearcat with firestick.) Because of the cap, mounting the antenna was a bit of a challenge, so I tried out a mount that basically bolts on in the same location, opposite of the factory radio antenna, and it worked out nicely. I changed out the factory fog light bulbs for aftermarket HID ones - EASY to do, BIG difference, and worth it. I also changed the headlight bulbs with premium aftermarket replacements, but with a marginal difference. It was a royal PITA to change the headlight bulbs, so I'm betting most people will wait until one bulb quits to fool with this, and replace it with whatever bulb puts off having to go through this process for the longest amount of time. This is getting to be a long post, so I'll keep the supercharger comment a bit short...I'd pass on it. The brakes are fine on the Tundra....but for someone who tows, lives in the mountains, or is a "spirited driver," I'd wager brakes would be an "area of opportunity" for premium aftermarket parts. I'd put my money in that area and following the maintenance schedule.

No you need not super charge your Tundra. I'm on my 5th 4X4 Tundra and I love them. two things to do. 1st install a cold air intake. I helped K&N develop mine and it gives you 19 HP. I went through many so I don't have the part number handy but will get it to you. Its only 320 dollars. Then the next is the tune on the truck. I have worked a lot with the only guy in the world that can re-flash the ECU on a Tundra. The tundra has a learning ECU so a piggy back system wont work. I re-flashed my 2016 tundra and it was a different truck. Hows 148 MPH with 4 wheel drive and 1000 RPM's to go sound to you you? Its real. I've done it. Your truck is at half throttle 1st through 3rd gear. yeah it's still fast. But with full throttle you will have a different truck. My tuner is working on the tune. As soon as its available i'll let you know and walk you through the process.

Sweet ride Nate. If you have the space and budget I would highly recommend 2 mods; 1-onboard air compressor (100% duty cycle, no cheap crap) with 2 gallon air tank. 2-Power inverter of 2000 watts that can run most power tools etc. I have the swing case and steps, good add-ons!

1) OK... absolutely supercharge it. AAP will never forgive you if you don't. 2) You might want a second deep-cycle battery and proper charging gear (solar as well as an alternator tap), and while you are mucking around with it you might wire in exterior power taps to the front and back (isolating the second battery from your starting battery for obvious reasons) and grab a roll of 12 volt cable for running power into your tent area if you're into that. That's helpful come the apocalypse (fridges, lights, etc.). 3) Ham radios would be nice. There are HF/VHF/UHF mobiles that are nice, though the HF antennas are best attached once parked, as good long distance ones are way too big for use while driving. Rigging a remote connection in the back for that might be nice if you do radios. APRS radios can be activated to report where you are over to the internet, if you need rescuing, but that has OpSec issues of course. 4) You will need a proper jack, shovel, tracks, tow straps, shackles and all that crap. There are locking tool boxes that securely bolt to roof racks for the smaller items if you want to keep the box sorted. 5) If you come up with a solution to put "the demonitizing thing that shall not be named" under your rear seat I'd like to see it. That's one flaw in my 4Runner TRD that bugs the hell out of me. Thanks CP!

As much as I have enjoyed CP and his helpful info, this materialistic approach to life makes me wonder how far away from God he may be, and our true purpose to this life and how to break free from this. At worst, it will require a battery disconnect/short-the-cables/reconnect and that's it. Gotta look into Fab Fours steel bumpers front and back, run flats, serious lighting (I’ve got two rows of 15 KC Flex arrays on the front alone), an underbody compressor and installed commo. Adding slip in floor or center console vault, oversized fuel tanks underneath and some other elements can finished this thing our for any issues over the horizon. I have supercharged trucks in the past and while it does add speed, it also adds another line of things that may break. I’ve got two trucks with all these elements and they are beasts. My Ram 3500 Limited Mega Cab has rear seats that fold down flat and has enough room for a full size mattress. The compressor helps that a lot and powers the train horn mounted in front of the radiator. Helps people decide what to do in front of you . Looking forward to seeing what else you do to it,

My 2017 tundra 5.7L 4x4?extra cab gets 17-18 miles per gallon out of the 28K miles I have on it so far. This was done with a calculator and through every single fill up I have ever done with it. My dad and best friend have a 2015 Tacoma 4x4 Trd and they both get between 16 and 18 miles per gallon. They also spent right around $36,000 on their Tacoma's which is exactly what I spent on my tundra out the door. I would much rather have the extra 110 hp and comfort of the tundra versus that little Tacoma with no bed . I don't know if they fixed it yet but since 2007 through 2017 Toyota has never addressed the fuel gauge problem. My dash can go all the way down to where it says I have 0 miles until empty and yet I can only fit 21 gallons in it at that point. That means it still has 5 gallons of gas in it when the gauge says 0 miles to empty. I was reading Toyota forums that day all the way back to 2007 when the tundra first came out and they were reporting the same thing Wayback then. The dealership tells me Toyota is not interested in fixing it. I never cared for the look of the Tacoma anyway but I've always loved the look of the tundra. If you look at a regular bed four-door Tacoma the cab portion literally looks like it's exactly in the middle of the vehicle because the bed in the hood are roughly the same length. To me that looks stupid . And I don't know why every single truck company has not adapted that built-in step that the Chevy Silverado has built into the rear bumper. That's just a no brainer .

Bro I love your channel but there aint nothing prepper about a gas engine gas hog like that. Its great off road and reliable, but once that thing is loaded down its going to get shat for mpg. You need a diesel, preferably something older that can run home made biodiesel as well. Gets more mpg, good torque for off road, able to run multi fuel. But its a sweet truck!!! Glad you are happy with it!! Love the channel!!

How about a four or six wheel trailer with all wheels powered by electric motors that can be switched on only when needed. Although it’s something that needs to be engineered by engineers it could actually improve your cross country ability instead of reduce it and maybe even improve your range if you can carry enough batteries and have an automated way of switching it on when needed say when climbing moderate inclines, accelerating and not just for the odd extreme obstacle. Also if you need to turn around in a confined space you could disconnect from the vehicle and controls could allow it to spin on the spot like a tracked vehicle.

The ribs underneath the diamond plate. Great spot for multi-purpose rods (e.g. fishing rods or camping poles), as well as ground sheet or other plastic sheets, to be used as shelter, wind break, which can be folded up and slid in the gap, simple bungee cord could hold that in place. For tools as well, Silky Saws, breaker bars, a few foam pads stuck to the upper surface, then few holes drilled, so you can span the gap with a plate, with more foam stuck on, holds tools in place and stops rattling.
