For other cameras, they may need to shoot Log to get the best image possible. Fujifilm is in a league of their own.

I was sold on Eterna. I still like it. But Classic Chrome, in my opinion too, just has something special. If you're in high contrast situations, then Log will definitely help you out. But, on the whole, I agree, it's not necessary to shoot Log ALL the time, especially indoors. Maybe on high-end cinema cameras, but not when working with the XT3/4. 🙂

That 8bit CC footage exposed so low, held up so well. I just blew me away. my 10bit footage starts to fall apart by just basic white balance adjustments. obviously I am beginner and know very little, but still, never thought that was possible.

Thanks for this video and sharing your thoughts and experiences, John! I shoot 95% 10-bit F-Log and I love it. ☺️ The remaining 5% I shoot with flat Eterna, typically in very dark spaces, when lower ISO is better, or in very cloudy spaces, when it is better not to squeeze the information too flat. I find shooting F-Log pretty straightforward with always checking the histogram not to clip the highlights and exposing a bit to the right. My color grading with Resolve is also very quick and flexible with power grades, i.e. clear and preset node trees including different LUTs (your LUT of course (!), Eterna, some other LUTs including e.g. Buttery LUT and with CST the ARRI-like Phantom LUTs originally made for S-Log!). I get great results with a couple of clicks only, thanks to Fuji's fantastic image quality. I have not yet fallen in love with Classic Chrome, I don't know why. 🤔 I should give it a try some time!

Sometimes I think the people who preach the log format, regardless of the enviroment and situation they shoot in, haven't really understood what it was actually intended for. They want all the dynamic range they can get and yet they keep shooting log in scenarios with low dynamic range, which introduces a whole lot of issues like noise and ugly shadows with purple patches etc. I made the mistake once by taking the advice about shooting log all the time and came back from a shoot with almost unrepairable footage. Since then I've switched to using a flat Eterna profile for the majority of what I shoot to get the cleanest image throughout the spectrum, and only switch to F-log during high contrast situations like indoor scenes, where I want to retain the highlights coming through the windows, while being able to expose correctly for the subject I'm shooting 🙂

@@johnstamw I most certainly have and at least I learned the lesson on a low budget shoot where nothing major was on the line. I can't speak for the people shooting on high-end cinema cameras like ARRI's and RED's, which undoubtedly handles everything better. But for people shooting on mirrorless cameras, I wish more people would just shoot in normal Rec.709 profiles and only shoot log in the situations that calls for it. This video is such a breath of fresh air and the kinda stuff people should watch, before venturing into permanently shooting log, cause guys like Peter McKinnon said so...

As you said log is a good profile but not for quick turn arounds, I use classic chrome plus s few other simulations and when it comes to contrasty situations I bump up my DR to 400 and it does a perfect job which saves me tons of time to color correct and color grade.

I almost always shoot stills in Sim bracketing, with CC, Proneg Standard, and B&W. The color with CC and PNS are so nice. For video i use HLG and +4 color (prores HQ), which ends up looking like a flatter PNS but HLG has superior noise and resolution to even F LOG. At least on the XH2s.

I agree. I think people are usually missing the whole point of Log or maxing your DR. You just have to ask your self what is the actual dynamic range on the shot/scene what you are shooting? You don't need +13 stops of dynamic range when shooting for example overcast day. There might be only under 10 stops of dynamic range on certain light conditions. Or is maxing your DR even desirable? Blown out highlights or otherwise strong contrast might the desired look sometimes. So those extra stops of DR just makes your life harder at post production. And even if you would so to speak ''benefit'' from those extra stops it might still be making your post harder thus taking a toll from something else more valuable at the edit. Especially if you are (Like my self) not so into learning pro color grading stuff and rather focus on what really counts = what happens in the front of the lens :)

Thank you for this video, it's great. I agree that CC is wonderful. I understand that you shoot CC and then color grade it using LUTs. When you shoot CC do you alter the tones? Would it make more sense to shoot CC at S-tone -1, H-tone -1? The second point I'd like to make is that I find Pro Neg Std even better than CC because it has wider DR and even lower noise.

Just be careful when using dr400 and highlight at -2, its so agressive on the highlight rolloff that you can mess up highlights in the face and almost smear out the luma on the skin. It doesnt look natural. I would only use that setting on extreme dr encironments and wide shots, not on closeups or midshots where you see face details. I only tweak those when the sky barely clips and i dont want to change exposure, gives you that extra bump down of exposure in the highlights.

@@johnstamw yeah, the great thing with the DR200/400 is that you can adjust the highlight compression in steps (they hardly affect the shadows, lifts slightly). In dr200 yo can go down to 320 ISO i think instead of being locked to 640. Its a great middle-ground. In f-log you are pretty much locked in and not much of adjustment freedom. my first review using @jhon stambaugh settings, on June 11 I worked on a wedding video client from Korea, using fuji xh1, the results were amazing, for photos, the colors and characters produced were very beautiful and encouraging , haven't had time to try color grading for the video, I'll update it soon, Thx a lot Jhon , your information is really helpfull!😍🙌🏻

@@anginlaut3476 that's so exciting!! For video, if you exposed properly(slightly underexposed hopefully), then when color grading you'll have to learn how to lift the shadows well without causing noise, but otherwise you should love it!

Hello from France. Thank you for this video ! Your work is very inspiring and I love your color grading. In wedding, I shot in Flat Eterna but I'm not 100% convinced. I never thought to take the CC on video but I love it in photo. I'll try it, now ! 2 questions : You use your FUJIFILM LUT with the classic Chrome ? and you shoot in 100mbps or 200mbps ?

Yes your colors are very nice, but its not the classic chrome? Its your grading for the most part I think? I have some weddings planned in september. Any tips how to get those (dreamy) colors? Starting with classic chrome and then ... ? :D

Aw that's kind of you to say! I do think color grading plays much into the conversation. My point here was mostly about Log not always being 100% necessary as the advice so often is portrayed online. Here's my best quick advice: expose properly while shooting, practice your color grading, then maybe you can use LUTs(even mine haha) as a base point (you can even lower the power%) for a grade or at least inspiration, then you grade it aiming for a distinct style while remaining somewhat subtle, not overdone, and then receive some critique, then grade it again. Oh, and give yourself lots of grace during practice and in the final result knowing that you'll be getting better all the time! Hope that helps!

Do we have to use CST in DaVinci resolve for Film simulations as well or is it only for F-Log?
@johnstamw
@johnstamw Жыл бұрын
CST can technically be used for anything really, but most useful for Log to Rec709. Film simulations are default Rec709 so not necessary!

Heh - Chrome (with my personal tweaks) is what made me jump 3 generations of Fuji, the moment I saw pics taken in Chrome. It's fantastically balanced and versatile. Fuji was the first camera I didn't shoot all in RAW... and we all know why :D I know I'll use f-log, but Fuji has taught me to trust the camera for years, and I know it will will not let me down with video :)

@@johnstamw SO true! I'm pretty accomplished with color & monochrome work in still photography, so when Fuji came out with simulations in both that I could not reproduce on my own, I was SO EXCITED! Also, I grew up in the 70s, so Super 8 film and Chrome film both stir up tremendous nostalgia for me :) It's why I'm hoovering all the color-work videos I can find, so I can turn our crystal clear modern digital work into classic film-looks LOL (Fuji lenses have a ton of character, which always helps :)

I fully agree with your approach. Great video👍 Fyi..when it comes to “You must do it this way” “You should be doing this” “You should be buying this” “I hate that”, and regurgitating the opinions and styles of the more active KZbinrs, Americans are the No1 in the world. 😂😂 look at the idiots who all must buy straps by Peak Design. PD must be laughing at all thess kids. So easily manipulated😂 Same goes for shooting in RAW, F-Log, must have dual card slots etc. The market itself is so highly manipulated. Keep up the great work👍 Subscribed!
