Why I will have to stop posting for a while...
So I'm not really that used to making these update videos, so I wasn't as clear as I'd like to be. Several months ago, I tore a tendon loose in my shoulder. Given my history of shoulder pain, I didn't realize this was different than what I was used to and continued doing things I normally would do. That continued activity probably aggravated the condition more. I finally realized it wasn't going away and made a doctor's appointment. Initially they gave me a cortisone shot but that didn't help, so I got an MRI and the correct diagnosis. I then had to wait for surgery scheduling to call me, but was told the operation would be mid January. They called after this video was posted and said it's actually mid February. Between now and surgery, I can get out there, but I have to seriously dial back my activities so I don't further worsen the tear. After surgery, I will have several weeks where I can't do anything real physical activity. I'm not really sure how long it will take before I can be cleared for hiking, but I hope within a few weeks or more I can be back out on mellow hiking trails. They said it would be 6 months before I can begin weight training to strengthen my arm/shoulder and it would take several months (up to another 6) of weight training physical therapy before I'm back to 100%. Until I have completed the full recovery, I probably can't canyoneer, climb, scramble or do anything where I need both arms to keep from dying. HOWEVER, car camping and day hikes should be fine from now until surgery and hopefully shortly after surgery.
Another complication is editing. Even if I can be out hiking 2 or 3 weeks after surgery, I doubt I can use my right arm for editing; that repetitive motion of using a mouse and keyboard probably won't be feasible for longer. I'm not sure.
During all of this I haven't gotten out much as I've been waiting to hear what's going on. So my previously recorded content has pretty much caught up with the release schedule, so there will probably be some gaps here and there, but hopefully I get back out there for the time being and fix that. I'm also kind of regrouping and thinking about what this all means. Trying to get together ideas to keep myself busy and sane through all of this, and I have a pretty long list of stuff that will keep me busy well into next year. I also greatly appreciate the suggestions from you all.
Anyway, that's what's happening. I'll try to keep everyone posted without being obtrusive about it. After all, this is a hiking channel and I do my best to keep it light hearted and focused on the outdoors.

First, I'm blown away by the support and positive vibes. You all are awesome. (I'm still working through the responses...It'll take a while but I'll get there.) Secondly, I did not clarify this very well at all. I just got the diagnosis and they told me surgery would be around mid January, but they had to get back to me with an exact date. Of course they got back to me right after I posted this and let me know that it's actually not until mid February. That's the earliest I can get the procedure done. Until then I obviously shouldn't do anything that could injure it more (so no canyoneering, scrambling, etc.), but I can still get out there. So I can get back out there in some capacity until the procedure, then I'll be out for a while....Hopefully not long before I can get back at the day hikes at least. Sorry I wasn't more clear.

Had a shoulder replacement two years ago and I couldn’t put a pack on for 6 months. I was so happy when I was able to hike again. What saved me during recovery was walking. Even though I was on flat terrain I could still get some miles in and it got me outside (this was after being stuck indoors and wearing a sling for 6 weeks). Be sure to let your body heal and don’t over do. I’m 68 and though I’ve had to modify the type of hiking that I do I am still out there 2-3 times a week. My best to you and Tina.

That's good to hear. That's what I'm hoping for. I'll be on my back a few weeks, then some short walks, then some short hikes. 6 months later maybe backpacking. 12 months hopefully back to 100%.

And relieved because I thought you were going to say you were experiencing burnout and needed to take an extended leave. As someone who has had to endure injuries all my life and is permanently injured for the rest of my life... here is some advice I can land you. Regardless of what the doctors say and what physical therapists say... your body will tell you when it is good and healed. I know it sounds unorthodox but bear with me. I pursued competitive mountain skiing and really did a number on my knee. 2 surgeries later, screws, ligament repair and plate in my leg... I was doing my thing. I will skip over many countless injuries mountain biking. 2016. This not so nice lady ran a stop sign. I T-boned her full speed. I have neck and back and knee injuries for the rest of my life after 2 years of therapy. I live in pain either aggravated or some most of the time. I walk with a brace and can't look up but you know what can not stop this guy... life. I found a way... I willed myself... and while I unfortunately had to give up mountain biking and scuba diving... hiking is one guilty pleasure I do with great desire. I hope that you get yourself situated and figured out... navigate around your recovery and stay committed to having a long term vision. There will be ups and downs and trust me... most of the time it will suck... but then you find yourself back out there pointing your nose to top of the mountain or bottom of the canyon. Get well. Get done what you need getting done. To quote this guy who goes by Jerry Arizona... "find what you are truly passionate about and pursue it relentlessly". We know you are passionate about hiking and climbing. Get back into good spirits. See you out there on the trails.

Tina and I have talked many, many times about what we're gonna do when we can't do this anymore. (First, easier hikes, then travelling in an RV, eventually just margaritas and the couch, I guess.) I'm definitely going to focus on some positives and I'm lucky I shouldn't have that much down time before I can hike again.

Jerry, you and Tina are an awesome couple and unofficial members of our(myself, my girlfriend/life partner Marie, our adventurous kelpie Napo, and my companion cat Mango) extended family. Surgery and the recovery process afterwards are going to suck, but if it means being able to enjoy the life you love to lead, then we(and especially I) 100% support you in it. These may just be words in a comment box to anyone reading it, but they are heartfelt sympathies coming from someone who has already undergone a total left knee replacement and is gearing up for the same with the right knee soon to get my own life back. Being in extreme pain and being unable to function normally is no way to enjoy the things you love to do. Good luck, we wish you a successful recovery, and we look forward to one day actually seeing you and meeting you out on the trails. As a side note, since Marie and I met in 2010, we have been coming out to your neck of the woods to play for extended summer trips every year. You have something there we don't have in Florida... Elevation! Live life. And damned it, climb that mountain! David

Jerry, I seem to recall you mentioned in one vid that you are in your 50's. I think the kind of hikes, and especially some of the climbing that you do (as amazing as it is) may have taken it's toll to some degree. I am also in my 50's, and used to (and still do to some degree) love hiking, especially the stunning areas of Northern AZ, UT and CO, but I've found that I just can't push myself anymore for fear of injury, plus my balance and overall agility has diminished to some degree. I really understand how you feel, and I wish you a speedy recovery. You've posted so many excellent vids, and it's a joy to re-visit them, so no need to feel bad about cutting back on the content. I think you and Tina deserve another great meal at El Patio, go enjoy!

Yeah, I can absolutely feel that I'm older and it takes a toll. One of my problems is the people I hang out with are absolute beasts and I can barely keep up with them. They're younger than me (especially Nick)....But I also know people in their 70's I can't keep up with. Hopefully I have a decade or so left....eventually Tina and I will be that RV couple hitting up overlooks and campsites I suppose. Not a bad life either.

I visited the Scottsdale Phoenix area back in '05, I did most all my hiking and climbing while I lived in Denver Colorado. At this point in my life I want to get out as much as I can and hopefully recover my physical stamina.. I've been living at sea level basically for about 20 years now, but I've never lost my enthusiasm for hiking even so. I just want you to know.. both you and Tina inspire me to keep the faith and to get back to it asap. I can file for SS next year.. I'll have to keep working but at least I'll have the extra money to be able to travel some.. I haven't taken a day off since well before Covid hit.. I never got covid but I volunteered for the Moderna vaccine when available.. the period afterwards left me weak physically.. I had just begun to recover my stamina--almost two years later.. then this issue with my left knee and hip started.. You've inspired me to work hard to get myself back in shape and ready for a trip out west. You take good care of that shoulder so that you heal well. I have my first doctor's appointment later this morning.. I'm going to beat this.. you take good care as well. Perry

Hey Jerry! Yeah I thought it was just me and that I’d somehow missed your regular video. Sounds like a genuinely sucky injury but YAY for actually following up with the right medical professionals. This will give you the opportunity to go through all your old footage, and you probably have loads and loads of it, and put together videos like “the 10 best whatever Hikes “or “seven things you might not want to do”. You could also shoot and edit reviews. When you do get back to hiking, yeah… You’re gonna have to be super careful. You won’t be able to use a hiking pole on that side and the absolute last thing you’re gonna want is to fall on that shoulder. 😱 This is gonna be a challenge for you, no doubt. But you’re also a guy that really likes a challenge. This might not be the kind of challenge you were looking for but I have confidence that you’re going to take it on and make it into something good

I'm pulling for ya and a smooth recovery. Perhaps you could interview some of you hiking and canyoneering friends in this period instead of your usual hiking content. Not sure exactly what would make the most interesting content, but maybe questions about how people first came to these activities/hobbies, how they fit them in to what I assume are regular, busy lives. I dunno. But maybe doing something hiking related and still shooting and editing will help keep your spirits up. Good luck and hope to see you on here again soon!

Best of luck on your recovery. I had a tib/fib break when I was 57 (dirt bike). It does get better if you do the right things. F.Y.I. If you find yourself falling, make a cage around your head with your arms as you fall. Nothing more important that protecting your head and plus you are less likely to break bones while trying to "catch" yourself. Odds are you will come out of it with bruises at worst. I snapped a tendon (supraspinatus muscle insertion) in my right shoulder. A tree limb fell on it causing it to retract from where it was attached. Surgeon re-attached it with two tiny straps anchored with screws. Six weeks in a sling (you will rapidly adapt to using only your left arm) followed by 20 physical therapy sessions. This occurred in March. By August I was backpacking in the Grand Canyon. Orhtopedics is amazing. My shoulder is better than new (REALY no exaggeration here). For pain/discomfort I took hydrocodone for one day after surgery then OTC analgesics (Tylenol, and such). performed arthroscopically so no surgical scars whatsoever.. Go for ir and plan more hikes while recovering.

The procedure involved stapling the tendon to her hip bone. Her recovery time is projected to be 4-6 wks with no weight being put on the injured leg during recovery. I feel for you buddy... I'm in the same house of pain! I injured my left shoulder in June, right after we got home from our trip to Yellowstone NP. I fell off a ladder from about a height of 9 ft, smaked my shoulder on the concrete carport, but didn't feel any pain whatsoever. 4 months later, I can't lift my arm over my head and kept dropping things. MRI revealed a torn bicept tendon, torn SLAP (the cup inside the scoket), torn supraspinatus tendon (the trap muscle) and massive arthritis. Had the surgery on Nov 3rd and in PT now...very difficult. I'm crawling the walls and to make it worse, I had just purchased a fat tire ebike.... bummer! You're not alone, happens to a lot of us outdoor types. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

New subscriber here. I already had that same surgery done 7 years ago and I have near full function of my right arm. I am going to stress this very important piece of advice. After surgery you will be in a sling for awhile before you start physical therapy. Listen to your physical therapist and your doctor. It going to be a long time before you even can even do "normal" activities. I have met a lot of men who have had the same surgery and because of "Machoism" they would try to get back to doing normal things too soon. Guess what? They had to go back into surgery to have it done again. One guy, being an idiot, went for the third time and it too far longer in surgery to correct. What I am saying is don't act the fool and listen to what health care professionals tell you what you can do and not do during recovery.

Oh no Jerry! First and foremost, heal and get better so you can continue. Your channel has been a huge inspiration for us. Now, I am going to say, please don’t stop doing your thing. Is it possible that you can go through your past footage and make some ‘remixes’? Like narrated, pure informational content to continue feeding the beast? We started to do that, especially with shorts, and ironically, our growth is shooting through the roof, especially on Instagram. Anyway, sounds like you will prioritize healing, which is the right thing, but I think your passion for doing it will lead you to some kind of good interim solution. Good luck sir and we will be here waiting for your big return!

I had both done in my early 40's. 2008 and 2009. They both need it again but the doc said I had an architecture problem. The acromion on my scapula's is crazy big and shaped funny. He did all the whittling he could do on it and it allowed me to keep working as a framing contractor for 12 or so years. Yes, 6 months minimum on the recovery for sure but he had me start PT after one month for the first one and one week on the second. Oh the pain. Make sure you have a recliner to sleep in for the first week or so. NO laying down.

I've taken(am 60 yrs old) a few falls this year bike riding/tripping on a rock and have twisted ankle in 2x in earlier years. Physical therapy works wonder as well as, rest. Our family is sorry to hear about the injuries and long recovery time, but we’re glad that you’ll be able to get the procedure done and plan to follow up with diligent recovery and physical therapy. 🍀 🍸 💪 Lemons into lemonade… 🍋 🎥 For 2023 my partner had three unexpected surgeries; 4 inguinal hernias repaired plus a thumb tendon reattached after cutting through his hand with an angle grinder. For the first hernia surgery to fix 3 huge tears he was supposed to take it easy for three months… but he was lifting heavy, fresh cut, wet lumber off the sawmill and building a sturdy barn within two months of the first surgery. Of course, he tore another inguinal hernia in a different spot within that recovery time and ended up with another 4 months of scheduling, surgery, and recovery. They told him if he did if he did it again they won’t be able to repair the muscles a third time and he’d continue the restricted, painful life indefinitely. He lost more time, money and sanity in the long run by pushing his body before it healed, and the whole saga threw our 2023 schedule off for all of our construction, renovation and work traveling for the year. Plus, he was such a joy to be around during recovery. 😱 🤦🏻‍♀️ 🙄 (Tina, run now while you can!!) But… something great came of it out of it. He FINALLY had time to sit still, focus, and teach himself video editing, so that he could finally start his KZbin Woodworking channel. 🔨 🪑 🪵 🪚 🎥 So now we have also started making outdoor nature, hiking and farming videos with our kids and often discuss your framing and editing techniques, along with that of Luke Nichols from the Outdoor Boys. 2 new video suggestions for the recovery period: 1- Videos of handicap accessible, easily accessible, and/or driveable nature or hiking places for disabled/older viewers or those with small kiddos, and details like if there’s a railing to keep toddlers from plummeting. 2- Jerry’s video tips… maybe not giving away ALL of the magic, but some pointers on equipment setup, software, what not to do, epic fails, drones, cameras, mics, audio, and down low on time spent outdoors versus editing. I’ve been trying to find which video includes a comment where you answered someone’s question about how you set up your camera equipment, but still can’t remember which video that was. 🤔 Jerry Arizona is the BEST CHANNEL ON KZbin. The cinematography, editing, art work, humor, candor, wholesomeness, physical and mental fortitude, hardheadedness (is that a word?), the Mostly Sunny in Arizona Gang, music, Nick shenanigans 🍭 🌊 🧊 , wildlife 🕷️ , partnership 💍 , friendship, environmental and cultural messages ♻️, anticipation, and the love all y’all have for each other kicks the ass of every other channel I’ve seen. 🥇 It doesn’t really matter what you do, because we’re all going to watch it and enjoy it. Because, you (y’all) are fucking good at it. 🥾 🏔️ 🚙 🧗 🏕️ 🍸 🌮 🍻 ☀️ 🌯 ☔️ 💻 📷 📱 ⏰ 📺 (No need to ever comment, btw)
