It’s very simple. Blinding the people who are driving cars towards you is just flat out dumb. Bright and fast flashing lights are very disorienting and distract people from the danger that they should be focusing on. The towing industry has gone WAY into the stupid category with the amount of lights and crazy flash patterns that have become the norm these days.

Casey, the SK government did a 12 month study in the late 1980s in Saskatchewan (Canada) when it comes to light bars and warning lights in regards to approaching traffic. Trucks operating a crash in the ditch that had their strobes/lightbar on had a 4000% (yes 40 times) more likelihood of having an approaching car drift into the ditch (or the shoulder) where the recovery truck was working (people inadvertently lean towards the lights and drift the steering wheel in that direction "to see what's going on over there"). Road flares (burning or reflective) set up 200m before the crash scene did far, far, more to prevent secondary accidents than any amount of blinking lights. This resulted in some general retraining of tow trucks and first responders on highways attending accidents. I couldn't find a link to the study (it was the Department of Highways and the University of Saskatchewan) to share, probably because it predates the internet. The reduction of distracting lighting lasted about 10 years... and then every new bright eyed 'I know more than you' that came along argued that everyone needed more lights and today every arsehole has 250 bright flashing LED bars etc. on their units. Simultaneous to this study for reducing flashing lights on highway night-time recoveries was a debate on blue lights for police cars. The RCMP was a very vehement and vocal supporter of police-only for any blue lights (they went so far as to make them illegal for ground-effect lighting on private cars/bikes as well). They removed all the blue lights from snow plows and salt/gravel trucks (the standard warning light for them for 50+ years in Canada, even though blue warning lights are far more visible in snowy conditions than amber alone) and changed the law to only allow them on police vehicles. Three years ago, there was a follow up study and now blue lights are back on snow plows and gravel/salt trucks (along with amber) as well as on fire trucks (red, white, and blue) and ambulances (red, white, and blue) while police are all blue and red (more blue than red lights). Putting the blue lights back on has reduced winter accidents for highway snow removal vehicles, and it has improved first responder traffic clearance as well as reduced secondary accidents at a scene (for blue being the 3rd most predominant visible light on ambulances and fire trucks). Basically, there are always going to be "the new guys" that know more than "the old guys" and things change for the sake of change alone more often than for the sake of safety. Fewer lights flashing on a roadside or in a ditch means fewer secondary accidents because they don't distract other drivers. *Period.* Maybe it is different in a well lit urban environment, but on a dark highway or road they are a hazard to anyone working the scene and there is plenty of data to back that up.

The UK has used blue lights on their police/emergency vehicles going back many decades. I often wondered why blue, and now the reason is better told here, for best visibility.
@Jagabot_Esq.
@Jagabot_Esq. 7 ай бұрын
@@McBuggs. Blue light is more visible in snow, and it is a colour that is not common on the the road (red-amber-green for traffic lights, and cars have white and red lights, so blue stands out better amongst all the light chatter) but the real reason the UK (and Germany, especially) changed to blue lights was because of enemy aircraft during the 2nd World War. Since the atmosphere scatters blue light more than other colours, blue can’t be recognised above a height of 500 metres. Fire trucks, which had always been equipped with red lights on account of their association with danger, had to be refitted. Police cars, however, had hardly ever driven with special lights up until that point. After the Second World War, many fire fighters reverted to red lights, probably in a nod to tradition. Blue-light advocates, however, argued that the use of red lights might cause confusion at traffic lights or level crossings. They prevailed. In 1951, blue lights were officially mandated in road traffic licensing regulations. From then on, the trend spread to emergency service vehicles all over Europe.

Kudos to you, Casey. The levels of common sense you display in everything that you do is why I'm subscribed. I'm a former Firefighter and Rescue Tech and I agree, all the emergency lights these days are WAY too bright. Alerting traffic to your presence is one thing, blinding and disorienting them as they try to navigate safely past you is asinine. I have said this to myself for years passing emergency vehicles at night, and I was thrilled to see a consummate professional such as yourself saying the same thing. Hopefully, every emergency service in the country sees this video and figures it out.

Thank you, and very smart move. Lots of people suffer from night blindness, so big bright lights in their face doesn't do anything but make it where they can't see anything at all in front of them. Lighting up the scene instead actually makes it way easier for someone with night blindness to navigate it safely for both the people on scene and themselves. Even if you don't have night blindness, you know you rage when someone high beams you. This just makes sense.

I appreciate your explanation about the lights. Its not just being blinded0r distracted by bright lights. What no one really realizes is when you have flashing, bright, strobing or whatever warning devices… it causes drivers to look at them. And that causes the driver to vier in the direction they are looking. ESPECIALLY impaired drivers. Its why there are so many fatalities on the highways, construction zones, wrecks, etc.. the more lights you have the more dangerous it is. There needs to be a serious discussion at the DOTs regarding over-lighting. In Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana I've come upon accident scenes that I literally couldn't look directly at. Couple fire engines, police cars, ambulance, all with 20,000 lumens each of LEDs, it's just INSANE. I believe they took the same lighting budget for the obsolete lighting and used it all on cheaper, longer life LEDs so they wouldn't lose that money. I haven't seen any data but I bet they cause accidents as well as retinal damage.

Really like your thoughts on the lighting. I just went past a large recovery on the side of the road at night and all the fricken lights pointing into the oncoming traffic made it almost impossible to see even the police officer attempting to direct traffic. Shining a light in someone's eyes doesn't help them to see you. Though, as you rightly point out, lighting yourself up makes it so you are seen. Wish others thought about this too.👍👍

Casey can you show your truck at night facing the wrong side of the road as you do many times working, in the dark 1 with your headlights on and 2 with your headlights off and your be seen lights on and show the huge difference in safety. it is something I see all the time. its this, parked at night all crews leave the "headlights on" when facing the wrong way on the road and headlights are only for driving down the road and blind everyone when they approach so what no one does while working is leave all marker lights on all work lights on leave all beacon lights on but turn off the "headlights" its the one safety thing no one does again when facing the wrong way or facing traffic turn off the head light. your thoughts

I did see one in Wy that had lighting much like you are doing, and I truly appreciated it because I was able to see him from a distance, yet when I got closer it wasn't so obnoxious that it blinded me and created yet another issue. One actually looked like it had rock lights set in halfway under the body - great ground light exposure, but nothing that was shining into the vision path of the people driving near and around it. I came upon a rural accident in the dark and the rain. The light level from the tow truck, two fire trucks, and a couple black and whites, on the rainy windshield, was flatly blinding. The insanely overbright lighting of the firetrucks were exactly at the height of my pickup's windshield. Of course I came to a complete stop and opened my windows, both sides, so I could communicate. I heard a voice say: "Don't stop, keep going." I asked who was talking and where were as I stated loudly that "I COULD NOT SEE THEM." Finally a lady firefighter stepped to my door and pointed and told me to go. I pointed out to her that the disastrously over-lit trucks were sadly likely to be the cause of injury or death at some point, and I hoped that person would not be her. You are a wise man for lighting your truck this way. You should teach classes!!

Everyone has their opinion and view of emergency lighting and their use. I used to run specialized and had Federal Signal lightbars with halogen rotators on the headache rack. The beam pattern of the reflectors did shine the light around as reflected off of surrounding objects quite well. I replaced the halogen bulbs with LED replacements and got a brighter "in bar" light along with the reflected light. I was also in law enforcement and had both halogen and strobe lightbars, grille and rear deck lights. The only drivers that, in my experience, had "the deer in the headlights" look where they veered toward the lights were drunk drivers. Most drivers acknowledge the emergency vehicle on the side of the road and divert their eyes from the light in order to maintain their lane or move over if possible. You do an excellent job of backing up your choices for your particular application and equipment with common sense reasoning. Your degrading of others preferences by calling them stupid is questionable since you appear to have a high sense of integrity.

Absolutely love this Logic, Casey!!! Lightning at night is so much better the way you describe it!!! I have been a good Driver since I was 16, and over 50 now, driving about 80% of Army Vehicles in Inventory from 1987 -2007 (my full belief is that if you have to wrench on, then you better be able to operate it) and as a construction equipment Mechanic I’ve operated some stuff that never gets used in Civilian life. That being said Experience and Stick time (Not on video games for me) is a very valuable skill that even though the number of simulators that are out there are constantly improving, but it’s not the same thing as being in the seat of a bulldozer for example, pushing blast rock down to a loading pile and backing up to the top and going over the Edge… That jolt of sudden drop from the sky is a doozy and the feeling that you have lost control as the dozer pivots on its tracks from say a 45° angle of nose down into a flat surface will blow your mind and your body goes through quite a shock when the dozer basically falls down in an arc 16-18 feet. All that steel loves Gravity! And if you are not wearing a seatbelt you can get tossed around the entire cab area. Including being tossed out of it normally, after hitting several hard surfaces before you get to greet the ground. And if you have it throttled up and your foot is not on the decelerater pedal it will take off and you are far from being in control of the Dozer that just left you. If you’re withering in pain on the ground with a dislocated shoulder, broken collar bone, that Dozer doesn’t care what it’s going to hit next… Safety first and Always!

Your explanation about the lights makes total sense. As it has clearly been demonstrated every day all over this country, you don't need bright lights to create a distraction that results in an unnecessary traffic jam, or an unsafe situation where someone may be injured or killed. All you need is someone pulled over on the side of the road to catch the attention of the lemmings and the sheep that seem to be conditioned to slow their speed to look at whatever is on the side of the road, creating another traffic jam.

Whenever you’re trying to start something with an electric fuel pump that has been run empty you need to turn the key on and off about 10 times or maybe even more to let the electric fuel pump give that first shot of fuel when it primes the fuel rails. Each time you turn the key on wait about four orfive seconds until you hear the fuel pump quit running. Do that before you ever start turning the engine over. It’s not like On the old mechanical fuel pumps where when the engine is turning over it’s pumping fuel into the carburetor.

As a heavy hauler, I have studied on the amber light issue. Your halogen rotators are really not enough. Studies have shown that a “quad-flash” strobe is the most eye-catching. I do respect and agree with your views on the work lights.

Casey, you are absolutely correct about the blinding effect of LED lights and work lights, during darkness. However, during the day, the incandescent bulbs on older light bars are terrible. Adding some supplemental LED flashers (a couple, not as many as you can fit) to use during daytime would bridge the gap. ... The lights on your small wrecker are a perfect example, you can't even see they're on until you're almost next to the truck. It seems with the new set-up, you'll be doing a lot more work on the side of the highway than before, and we all just want you safe. I totally agree, at night time, LED's are usually overwhelming (there are some models that operate at a reduced intensity and slower flash pattern if desired with the flick of a switch, maybe look into those? I'm sure cost is increased, but having the option to meet the demand of the situation is always a win). Keep up the good work!

Those halogen beacons are 100% better than any LED light out there, can see them so much further but don’t blind anyone. Can’t wait to see all your plans come together. That headache rack will add so much more storage plus a place for another halogen lightbar. Stay safe out there.

I totally respect your choice of lights (or lack of) I almost hit a flagman one night because the flashing lights on the fire truck were so bright I was blinded. Those stupid lights they have on cop cars, tow trucks, fire trucks etc are going to get someone killed. They create more of a hazard than they are supposed to prevent. I used to drive for a living so the above story is just one of many.

The law in UK changed now, to get the roadworthy MOT test on a car over four years old . Headlights must show pure white! The examiners even have a shield to put over the lights to test. Any hint of another colour, fail.

I totally agree with you about lighting. The only thing about the LED strodes that is nice is how far away you can see them, but then that is also their problem when you are close to them. Most cop cars these days are totally blinding, when they just have their yellow lights on as they direct traffic, or write tickets. You would think Police departments would think like you Casey, but that does seem to be the case.

Totallymakes sense not wanting a bunch of lights added. Plus it would add to the disconnect and reconnect procedure. With your magnetic setup you can use when and where needed and keep any potential moving traffic safe too. Those big snatch blocks are HUGE!! Really impressive tow and wrecker setup Casey!

I agree with the halogen sealed beam lights. One, I love the look of those. Always have. And two, they are far more effective, especially in fog or snow. It’s a right beam so it cuts through everything and can reach out to warn people, where as led, especially certain colors have different wavelengths and only go a very short distance before bouncing back at you. So it doesn’t shine very far and isn’t noticeable in low visibility until you’re right up on the truck site. And just recently in my town, a car smashed into a fire truck. I was dumbfounded trying to think how did you miss a big truck with all these flashing lights. But you just answered it for me. They weren’t alerted to an emergency vehicle, they were distracted by it and most likely completely blinded my all those while leds they use to illuminate everything. It’s so bright you can’t hardly even see the red strobe lights next to their flood lights!

That gap infront of the rear wheels seems perfect for a automatic sander that's pneumatically actuated and pushed against the wheels when the truck spins the tires. Those are on all timber trucks and plow trucks that operate on snowy icy roads here in Scandinavia, once engaged it runs off the trucks wheel slip-system and then uses the same air-actuators as you automatic chains an pushes the sandboxes with the dispenser wheel against the tires and spreads it in front of the drive tires .

It's so cool to see that you apparently know better than all those researchers, emergency services, etc. who use more lighting and warning lights. More and brighter lighting, especially so that people can see from a greater distance that something is going on and a driver can anticipate it. Inadequate and poorly placed lighting (in addition to the lack of experience, inattention of the tow worker or driver of the other vehicle) is what causes the many accidents and deaths (in towing services).

I agree with you and the other commenters about the blinding effects of the new strobe light bars. While they get the attention of the person they are trying to stop, the are a safety hazard to other drivers. One other thing that you might consider is wearing a head lamp at night to enhance not only your vision on your tadk, but also enhance the recording abilities of the video camera you're using.
Why I never do THIS while towing.
