The Unusual Celebration of International Women's Day in Russia: Exploring Its History and Traditions
For a foreigner, March 8 in Russia looks like men are anxiously trying to make up for everything they did or didn't do: they pamper their ladies, buy a TON of flowers, and, in general, make it a very special occasion. How did that happen in a country that was so proud of having feminists and working women in the XX century? Today we dive deep into Soviet history to try and explain how March 8 even became a holiday.

I love it! In Russia, Women's day is about genuine gratitude, in western countries, Women's Day seems more about being angry & resentful towards men, and playing victimhood even, often on an issue that is not even unequal.

Feminism in Russia had been born before Europe. Women voted and worked equally to men since the very beginning of the XX century. During Soviet times women worked a lot after the war, when there was not enough men. Although women still have problems especially in professional field, we are not so fixated on feminism as it seems to be an issue in the west... We don't prove anything to ourselves or others, we enjoy having different social roles and being called "weak gender" is not an insult to us. Some women fulfill their lives in motherhood, in housekeeping, some in profession. There are a very few professions where women can't work due to physical difference from men which people can not deny (those who know "what is a woman")

There is a major difference in how the Soviet Union handled post-war vs Western countries like here in the US. Despite Women proving their worth and power, as soon as soldiers returned home, women were pushed out of the fields they had been responsible for propping up. They also were continuously denied equal societal rights for so damn long. It's so recent, in fact, that there was a point within my mother's lifetime she could not open a bank account without a man cosigned. The main issue here is the codified status of women as property opposed to people.
