I would be really interested to hear your thoughts on Azula. She's such a complex character that a lot of people tend to boil down to irredeemable sociopath. I think there's more to her, and that she's more a product of her father's influence than innately evil. @@dolphinboi-playmonsterranc9668 they didn't demolish every last rule Avatar had set up, Avatar didn't say anything on those things, and that was the whole point. The world remained mysterious, spirit morality was intangible and hence the entire world felt deep. What Avatar Wan has done in the Legend of Korra was defining things that were better off undefined, and adding on history that made spirits lose their initial appeal. The episodes you mentioned did ruin a lot of the worldbuilding of ATLA, but not in the sense you described.

There are a lot of good Iroh moments, but the one that stood out to me on my recent rewatch way one of his last lines. When Zuko asks what he'll do if he doesn't take the throne, Iroh responds with something like "After we liberate Ba Sing Se, I'm going to reclaim my tea shop, and I'm going to play Pai Sho every day." It just says a lot about a character when they're leading and army to a revolution, but once the battle is won, that's it. He doesn't want power or even a place as an advisor. He just wants to revel in small delights and live the rest of his days in peace.

Still for me, is the heartshattering moment when Iroh sings to his deceased son. It shows a man who lost so much, partly due to his own ambition and what he had lost, now trying to prevent his second son to fall to the same vice he fell so long ago. @Avarn3884 жыл бұрын
I think what makes Iroh's story so great is that he very much defied the stereotypes of the Fire Nation. The Fire Nation themselves are indicative of Imperial Japan; proud, arrogant and believing they were in the right. Yet Iroh upon loosing his son realized just how fruitless the war was. What was the point of conquering when you lost something close to you? And in turn Iroh extrapolated this epiphany to life itself. That's why when he praised Aang for not going after power it very much was a reflection of his own experience. Iroh knows how skilled he is as a Bender. He is the Dragon of the West. But he wanted to live a life of peace. And in turn wanted Zuko to not be a slave of the Fire Nation and live life according to his own rules. Not due to some false ideas planted by his dad, Ozai. It is elements like this(no pun intended) that made Iroh such a wonderful character. The perfect mentor who very much is the Obi-wan of Last Airbender. In short, ATLA is a masterpiece of storytelling that sadly Korra could not replicate. Though, Iroh in Korra was great.
@samwarren28504 жыл бұрын
Korra suffered from not having an overarching plot in mind from day one. The last Airbender knew at least roughly what it wanted to do from the pilot to the finale, and it knew how it wanted to get there. Korra was more like a traditional TV show where they had the villain of the year and they had to deal with it season by season. I think if they had a better idea from day one, they could have made something on par with The last Airbender, but what they ended up with is still pretty damn good.
@Avarn3884 жыл бұрын
@@samwarren2850 I also know that Korra did some retcons from the Last Airbender which pissed off a good chunk of fans like the Sequel Trilogy. But that could be it to. For me, Korra season one and season three are the only solid seasons. Two and Four are bad to meh. It sucks because Korra's world is right up my alley as I am a sucker for steampunk fantasy. FullMetal Alchemist is a perfect example of this. It is why a part of me hopes Korra could be remade as a series of compilation films that condenses the story and fixes some of the mediocre elements of it.
@rhian64594 жыл бұрын
@Neil Couldn't agree more. Korra had so much potential to be great, maybe even as good as ATLA. There were moments where it really did feel amazing but it just wasn't consistent. Although the villains were almost perfect, it simply didn't have the season-to-season progression like ATLA did. Not only that, but Bolin practically had to carry the entire humour and comedy whereas in ATLA it was Sokka's chemistry with Toph and Aang that made it so funny. In terms of romance, ATLA never went over the top and nailed every single relationship (Sokka+Yue/Suki and Zuko+Mai and of course Katara+aang). In contrast, Korra had so many awkward love scenes and in the end every character had, at some point, dated every other character which just looked stupid.
@janewolf63904 жыл бұрын
@@samwarren2850 The only reason Korra ended up with a new villain each season because Nickelodeon jerked the creators around. After they created one season, Nick would tell them to make another. The creators thought each season they made was the last until season 4.

Don't get me wrong, I love every ATLA character for various reasons and they're all dear to my heart, but Iroh and Zuko just have such a great arc, and Iroh's wisdom increasingly helps me out as I get older and older, even if I'm a decent amount older than the main characters in the show now. Zuko's journey to become himself rather than what was expected of him by his father, sister, and his nation is just so inspiring and well-written. The interesting thing about Iroh's quote on choosing love over power is that he is applying it to the Avatar, who according to the original ideal before the concept of the LoK was the embodiment of the spirit of the Earth who existed to sympathize with the people. (as well as balance it) Many of the Avatars before him had lost that manner of thinking and forgot what they actually were. Iroh in this case is unintentionally (and perhaps for both parties, subconsciously) reminding the Avatar of what he is suppose to be and how he is suppose to act, not just as a balance to the world but also a member of it. If we follow that train of thought, Aang is the first Avatar in centuries, perhaps much longer, to restore (or at least starts to restore) the intent and purpose of the Avatar.

I think it's so sweet that Zuko tried making Iroh tea after that big fight.😊😊 He made Iroh his favorite drink, and it was a sign of love and kindness, that didn't taste good.🤭🤭

So true. I just finished TLA, and Iroh's quote about happiness and peace stood out to me as well. Iroh is easily my favorite character from the show- persistently positive, incredibly wise. I honestly learned some life lessons I needed to internalize in my own life through his proverbs :)

What a great vid, ty for making it. The youtube algorithm is eerily prescient to offer this as a recommendation. How on earth was is to know I watched this show over a decade ago and that my favourite character was Iroh? I agree with all your observations and am grateful for the ones I was oblivious to. The one biggest problem I remember having at the time of watching regarding the Iroh arc throughout the series however, was his ability to move about Ba Sing Se anonymously in plain sight after having led an invasion of the very same city. I understand that that world predated any form of visual recording technology, and the city had a russian doll like wall infrastructure that compartmentalised the city sections but it still seemed unlikely to me that no one in the city he encountered wouldn't recognise a general that invaded the city. And lol, yes, I'm aware this is maybe a way too a pedantic point to hold up against a Nickelodean children's cartoon, but you know, when the mind gets stuck on something it's hard to shake.

Currently on a binge during the Quarantine and I don't regret it. I watched it as a kid, again before going to college, and again now after graduating. And every time I do I gain a new appreciation for it. WATCH IT! Lol

When Zuko goes to find his mom, he leaves Iroh as the new Fire Lord temporarily... the first order of business was to officially declare a "tea apreciation" day... (which would actually be very popular among the citizens)

I've read some great points on the avatar Reddit page about Iroh. One stated that it's ironic how Zuko was chasing the love/approval of his father and then in book 3 he realizes it was always there in Iroh. Another great point is that Zuko begs on his knees twice in the show, one was when he found out he was going to fight his father and was shown no mercy. The second was when he begged for forgiveness from Iroh and was met with forgiveness and love.

I always wanted to have a prequel about Iroh, the most interesting character for me, and maybe the least explored one (talking about it's life). It would be awesome to have a season reviewing his early years, his naming as the Dragon of the West and a taste of his great powers, then the great lost (of Ba Sing Se and his son), and the the chosen path to help his nephew to avoid becoming what himself once was. As i write this, i'm also scared they would butchered this prequel for not treating well an awesome character...

Honestly, his talk with Toph made me cry (I am Toph but whatever). It really struck me to the core how much I needed someone to help me and how trying to do everything on my own was an unhealthy mindset… yet I continue on with it anyway. Rewatching ATLA is literally better than any therapy session could ever be, and this is just yet another example of Iroh being the best of the best.

I like to think Aang still went back to that Tea shop in Ba Sing Se many times in the time between ATLA and ATLoK asking for advice from Iroh. Iroh was also probably instrumental in building up the Order of the White Lotus.

You know, in one way, it should be noted that Iroh, while being a mentor figure... also can just be viewed as Zuko's dad. Sure, they argue and Zuko is rebellious... but aren't teens known for being rebellious?
@applechip67484 жыл бұрын
this needs to be noted? I thought that was pretty clear from episode 2, maybe? yeah, episode 2.
@TheDeathmail4 жыл бұрын
@@applechip6748 No, I mean the fact that everyone felt betrayed by Zuko when he betrayed Iroh; if Iroh is the dad, Zuko is the teenage son... so of course he'd do something stupid... rather than betrayal... it should be viewed instead as a little temper tantrum.
@applechip67484 жыл бұрын
@@TheDeathmail Except it wasn't a temper tantrum, he wasn't upset about anything, he actively led Iroh to believe that he wanted a peaceful life and actively worked to gain Katara's trust and then immediately decided to attack them because he would profit from it. He was practically an adult in Ba Sing Se, especially after he let Appa go, it was not a temper tantrum.

The absence of pride is just as bad as being consumed by pride. Iroh lacks the love for himself, he feels he does not deserve anything for the things he has done, and maybe he doesn’t, but he should love himself enough to realise that he has made a good impact on the world and in those around him, and he should pride himself in his ability to turn Zuko from the path hatred and self destruction. The balance between pride and humility is a difficult one. You need to love yourself as you would love others, if not, then you love no one. The absence of love for self is the definition of narcissism. Pride is essential to a human being, it is self love and self worth, and there is nothing wrong with recognising that, but don’t let it consume you as it did with so many.
