My family moved here in 1952, since my Dad worked at SRS. I went to school here, and graduated from Clemson and UNC-Chapel Hill. Aiken has always been home for me, in spite of the fact that I've lived in Louisiana, Massachusetts, Atlanta, and Berlin, Germany. I taught school here for 26 years, too. I do not like big cities and all the craziness they display, so Aiken is big enough to suit me without being a hole in the road or a place without anything to recommend it at all. It's quiet here, and I can understand why young people would complain about its being boring. I'm 78, so that doesn't bother me at all. Housing here has gotten very expensive compared to the past, but that's true just about anywhere these days. Still, homes that cost half a million here would go for three to five times that much elsewhere. I guess I could sum my thoughts up in saying that you can do a lot worse that Aiken without any effort at all.

I was fortunate enough to have grown up from the age of three in Aiken! I was lucky enough to have been employed at the Savannah River Site from 1977 to 2004! Thanks for showing the house I grew up in in this video! It's at marker 4:13 just before the photo of the trolley! Though I'll always consider Aiken my hometown, I lived in North Augusta for nineteen years before being laid off from the Site in 2004 then moving to the Colorado Rockies for a different kind of life. It's great living in the Rockies but like everything in life there are good and bad aspects. Up here, near the Rocky Mountain National Park, there aren't a lot of snakes, no red ants, chiggers, serious mold or pollen problems, sweltering humidity, tornado threats, and other problems typical of living in the Southeast. What we do have is high winds throughout the winter, too much snow too often, the constant icy slip and fall threat, MILLIONS of tourists from May to November, wild predators (black bears, cougars, bobcats, etc) roaming around at night, ornery moose and elk roaming around in the day, fire and flood threats, and having to drive 30+ miles down a narrow, steep and dangerous canyon to get to a major store like Walmart or Sam's just to name a few drawbacks. Like I said, everything has it's good and bad. But you can't beat the scenery! Aiken is an AWESOME small city and if I were to get tired of living in the mountains I would consider moving back there. Unfortunately, it's true what they say about never being able to go "home" because, as I can see from this video, it has completely changed from "my Aiken" to what it is today...someone else's Aiken.

I live in Greer, SC but love to visit Aiken when I get the chance. The downtown is just the right size to spend a day shopping and dining.

Thank you for doing this type of video. We have visited Aiken and loved where we stayed, but did not see all these beautiful places. I also wish that distance to major airports was part of area tours. We will be moving away from family and will need to fly back often. Thank you.

Richanne, Augusta Ga, which is 30 minutes away, has an airport. It also has van transportation to Atl airport (3 hours away) where the flights are normally cheaper and is a bigger hub. People also fly out of Columbia, SC (1 hour away) and Charlotte NC (2 hours away). Hope this helps!

I'm a general contractor that does custom remodeling, deck building and home additions, looking at relocating to aiken, SC. Is there a market for this type of builder there?
@marywilliams62542 жыл бұрын
Bryan, I am a realtor in Aiken and there is a HUGE market for this type of work! I can pass your information around the office and get your name out. Realtors are always looking for general contractors to help us sell and buy homes.

@@marywilliams6254 thanks for the reply! It may be a couple years still. But we are planning on taking a trip out there next year! My wife has an aunt moving there this year. I'll save your info for sure though and let you know when we're looking for a house!
