Why is buying a boat this hard? Brutal market, bad survey-who comes out on top?

Ron and Linda here.. '97 Mainship 350 2,800 hrs, Cat 3116. Engine in good shape as per samples and survey. Engine mechanic will revisit sea trial for vibration Wednesday as spare prop was sent out for tuning and installed on boat... Like you said.. Seller is motivated, season has ended already. Most boats are on the hard already in Baltimore, MD. Other things popped up in survey (just received today) that will have to be negotiated. Bottom was done in June, but patch job, will need soda blast and repaint soon. Genset new, but installation was terrible, left all original fuel and exhaust lines. Oil cooler/Engine mounts are original, shaft seal leaking a lot under load (goes back to shaft vibration, potential transmission output bearing damage), heavy corrosion on bottom of oil cooler. Amazing how a boat that looks above average, could have these overlooked items.. people seem to put their money into items that don't actually impact the bottom line.. like boat has completely redundant electronics, Garmin and Raymarine.. why, when you can actually just use your phone to navigate now (so there is you backup if you want redundancy).. I've actually been using just an 8" android tablet to navigate via Navionics on my current boat. Peace, out!

Here’s the deal people. Do not be in a burry to buy a boat! Find a owner that’s that isn’t still attached to his boat. Pay the fair market value for the boat or move on. Once you buy a boat you own the problem. The biggest thing people have to do is buy within your means. Do not buy a boat at the tippy top of your price range! Period! It is what it is!!! You want to enjoy the experience not start totally frustrated by it!! Believe me when I tell you that you will never be completely satisfied with any boat. You’ll always want one bigger/ newer/ with better equipment/ a better manufacturer ect. That’s human nature. Oh yes one more thing. If your not completely happy right now? A different or newer / bigger boat is not going to help you in the least! God Bless you 🙏❤️

I don't think we've seen anything, yet. I was inquiring about slip rentals and services at the Fort Pierce marina and I asked the woman in the office how she felt about the current boat market. I qualified the question somewhat by asking her how many boats at the marina were currently for sale. And she looked me straight in the face and said, "Honey, every boat in this marina is for sale. You just have to make the right offer."

People aren’t realizing that new boats are being discounted by 5-20% on average. I’ve seen one 65ft sailboat that is brand new drop from. 2.3 million down to 1.5 million. Used boats are selling at 30-50% less than than they were a year ago. Owners need to realize that any offer is likely worth taking right now. If you don’t sell you have dockage, storage, maintenance, insurance….so you are spending 20-40k a year for it to just sit. Subtract that off the listing price and sell the thing.

On that Viking you are showing that in undergoing complete updates and remodeling is that cosmetic or system repairs? Or both? What is buc value of that Viking in current condition? Can new owners recover those expenses if they had to sell? Or they upside down?

Yes this boat is mostly cosmetic and yes he can recover some but probably not all of the refit

Needs blasted, PEELED??, then barrier coated etc. ALL those blisters need to be addressed. That is NOT cheap!

The guy in next slip here at Palatka Florida got his boat thru yacht world last year, he had a heck of a time getting a salesman to come out, took 2 weeks before he could look at boat then to purchase it they drug their feet, didn't answer phone etc, he bought the boat but was a big waiting game took 6 weeks altogether could've been done in two days he paid cash.....

It can be for sure. Depends on the person etc. I have a 46 Hatteras sportfish and a bayboat. Not mistakes to me. They get used often and are lots of fun for me and my family.
