I want vinyl to live on. Walmart is the the most mainstream shopping experience in America. The fact that records are sold there shows that vinyl records are increasingly part of the “normal” consumer experience. I’m not only okay with that, but happy about it.

Melinda - No ugly comment here! Your comments in this video regarding the pros and cons of purchasing vinyl at Walmart was SPOT ON! I feel you covered every aspect of this debate, and left no stones unturned. I agree with everything you mentioned in this video, but I wholeheartedly agree even more with the positives you mentioned about purchasing records at an independent (Ma & Pa) record store. I have a Walmart just 15 minutes drive away from home, yet I drive 45 minutes away, to another community to purchase ALL of my vinyl at an independent record store. There, we’re on a first name basis, and all you mentioned about shopping at an independent record store is absolutely true. Nothing wrong with supporting the small business merchant either! Thank you for presenting this video topic, along with the time and effort to produce. You are a Rockstar! 🏆🏆🏆 ❤️❤️❤️ 💯💯💯

Great topic M! I LOVE the Wal-Mart Exclusives. To me it's just another collecting line that we can enjoy. Besides, yes Wal-Mart has records but they are not really "competing" in the vinyl market. Now if Wal-Mart starting carrying 4000-5000 titles and start playing in the used market....then I might have more of an issue. I hope they don't go up or down but just continue to do what they have been doing.

Walmart has very good prices on vynil records compared to independent stores , I like to support my local record shops but the prices are getting out of control. For example they had the Outfield Play Deep for 59.99 , sadly this will stop people from buying records .

I do both. I’ll buy some at Walmart that are special or when they have their big sales. But I’m not going to find things like David Gilmour, Traffic or ELO at Walmart. Really my record stores don’t sell a lot of new stuff so it’s not a huge conflict for me

im guessing that 59.99 is for the blue colored and numbered version. that is the 2022 press, its a record you can get easily secondhand for a good price. i wouldn't really have a problem with 'limited color/number' records having a premium price if it was a rare and unique thing, but it's just a marketing ploy anyway cynically intended for resellers to buy and relist elsewhere. picture discs for example were never cheap, you used to see them on the walls of record shops and they were expensive.

Really diggin' the Wal Mart colored vinyl re-issues of Metallica. At the same time, I did buy a sealed 2009 re-issue Beatles "Help" album at a local antique shop recently. It's great that there are more than a few options when seeking vinyl these days.

I've never shopped Wal Mart for vinyl but I know that special feeling of finding something you heard about or can't wait to have in the collection - there was a store "The Novelty Shop" that was owned by Husband & Wife and treated me like a family member - as a result this couple sold me import pressings by Queen - Genesis - Pink Floyd - Syd Barrett and introduced me to groups like Be Bop Deluxe, Uriah Heep, Night Sun, Zee, Mahogany Rush and Judas Priest to name a few - that's a feeling that attaches itself to the record - so whenever you pull that record out you will remember their happy faces - great video Melinda !❤

Example, Creeds Greatest Hits, only available at Wal Mart. Nothing beats the feeling of a local shop and actually digging through records and not knowing what you are going to find. Also the environment at a local shop is almost always so much better as well. It’s nice to have Wal Mart there when needed but best to have an actual record store available!

Records) nearby to where I live (Both are about a Ten Min. drive from my home) As you have stated the way they put their albums on display is horrible.( That may be the reason for my Bon Jovi Record being the way it was)

My experience has been mixed on Walmart records. The price is always good, but I’ve had issues with pops/clicks/scraping sounds on brand new records that were cleaned before I played them. Really good: Jimi Hendrix Atlanta Pop Festival, Best of The Doobies, ELO Very Best, Eagles The Long Run, LZ Houses-Holy. Ones that had noise I couldn’t remove after multiple cleanings: LZ 1 and III, Fleetwood Mac Rumours, Vince Guaraldi Trio Charlie Brown Christmas. Most of the baddies were not black vinyl except for LZ 1.

In recent years, many brick and mortar record stores have closed here in NYC. J and R Music was a very large store that had a huge inventory. In addition, the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan had many small, funky record stores that had used records for low prices. I have some of those $2 records in my collection. They have been largely driven out of business by the exceedingly high rents. I now purchase many of my records from mail order (eg. Acoustic Sounds). However, I greatly miss these stores and I feel bad that many young people will not have the same cultural experiences that I enjoyed.

I have bought a few records from WalMart. In recent times, I'm not too excited about shopping for records at WalMart. Like you mentioned, it's a pain in the butt to go through the records. A lot of the records they carry are not likely to be all analogue records. I enjoy mom & pop record stores, but like your city one doesn't exist in my town. The others near me are a bit of a drive. I like the thrift shops and garage/estate sales for "in the wild" hunting. I really like Acoustic Sounds for most of my new reissue purchases, because they sell all analogue records. I like to buy records directly from artists making new albums today. I particularly enjoy finding a really good on-line seller and developing an on-going purchasing relationship with a really good on-line seller.

Sometimes a Walmart is the only place they can go to get records. Not everyone has a local record store, but almost everyone has a Walmart. Get off the high horse people and let others enjoy the vinyl lifestyle however they want to. I think you hit it right on the head. There are some good records for good prices that are the same pressings. Also there are cool exclusives . I do have my share of them . But like you said it’s good for getting into vinyl. Obviously if you buy kind of blue from Walmart it’s not going to be from analog productions or mofi, and a good example is there is a Walmart exclusive Fleetwood Mac Rumours on clear vinyl, but unfortunately it’s from a digital source, the pressing is not exclusive to Walmart , like you said they don’t press them, just the color. But there is also an analog 33rpm and the amazing 45 rpm that they wouldn’t carry due to the cost. So sometimes it just comes down to knowing what they are carrying. But I still buy plenty from them.

In fact, they just got in a huge amount of new vinyl last week, including nearly all the Van Halen releases on 180G vinyl. I was happy to see that instead of just (over) stuffing the racks, they just put out the shipping boxes they came in. A huge improvement over what it was like the last several times I was there! I only own 2 Walmart exclusives I bought before knowing they had a bad rep: Stone Temple Pilots Core and Purple, beautiful looking colour splattered vinyls. Unfortunately Core was badly scratched on both sides. It was imported, as I'm not from the USA, and our local Wal-Mart's don't sell records. Fortunately the independent seller I bought it from had an extra copy and replaced the bad copy, otherwise I wouldn't have had the possibility to return it. I haven't played them yet, but now I learned that Core doesn't sound good, according to reviews on Discogs. People complain a lot about Walmart's QC. Something I learned from first experience, lol. As some commenters stated, Mom and Pop stores are today a problem more than a solution. They became scalpers, and prices have gone through the roof just this last year. Buying imports from Discogs are no longer convenient for me as I got to pay customs taxes after $50 purchases, and the records I want are now around that price. We cannot get back that records store culture we had in the past where prices were respected until the pressings sold out, now it's all speculating and creating scarcity. Amazon and Facebook have been my 2 main shopping choices for new and used records now, but both are also crumbling due to the increasing prices. Amazon often has great temporary discounts that, unfortunately, units sell out quicker nowadays because scalpers are at the hunt for those discounts. It's becoming a losing game now. Sob!

I buy from Walmart occasionally. And Barnes and Nobles. And Half Price Books. But mostly online for newer releases. I would prefer the independent stores but the closest one is an hour away. But when I go to my favorite independent record store (usually once a month) I’m in my zen zone. The owner is a very friendly, likable guy and he always remembers me by name. And I’ll usually buy as much as I can afford each visit. If I lived closer I’d probably be constantly broke.

In my part of Canada, Walmart does not sell vinyl. When I was in Washington DC last October, I did go to a Walmart and bought Purple Rain by Prince which sounded great. It is hit or miss. The new reissues of Purple Rain sound great and get wonderful reviews, others don't. It depends on how a record is done. Walmart only sells them. I usually get Walmart exclusive vinyl like Metallica colored vinyl and the LZ stage pass reissues. I also got a Stones “Hot Rocks” gold vinyl pressing. One exception was the 4 LP White Album remix/Esher Demo issue that was $25! I still can’t believe I found that for that price. I don’t care about whether a digital source was used or not, I can’t tell the difference. My only concern about that is if I want to resell them. I won’t get much for them, unless you find someone who likewise doesn’t care. Otherwise, I couldn’t care less. You’re right about Metallica, they do have their own presses, but also their own label: Blackened.

As you said, their pressings are fine. Those Metallica reissues sounded great and were at a fair price. I got Black Sabbath's "We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'N Roll" on green vinyl, and it's a great copy. I figure that as long as my main source of vinyl records is mom 'n pop shops, it's fine to pick up an occasional album at Walmart or Target. I see it as no different than when I first started buying records many years ago, when I'd shop the cut-out bin at Thrifty Drug Store.

Hi, Melinda! So glad you touched on this touchy subject. 😁 I love Walmart vinyl! They truly reel you in with the pretty colors. Sure, colored vinyl comes with its own occasional issues (surface noise, audio fidelity), but that's not necessarily Walmart's fault. I've been enjoying their exclusive red and blue 2LP Forest Gump soundtrack, Ozzy's "Patient #9" on gold swirl, and CCR's "Chronicles" on smoky swirl. I agree that these colored exclusives just add a fun touch to your collection. Their Black Friday record sale is totally irresistible! I got so much holiday shopping done in that week alone! Knocked out a few of my wishlist titles as well. And you're quite right about their convenience during a routine shopping trip, their value compared to indie shops, and simply a great way to knock out some essentials for emerging and seasoned collectors. Walmart will never ever replace my favorite local shop (KAOS Records in Covina, CA). Nothing surpasses the conversations, relationships, and trust you can build at an indie shop. If I want an analog-sourced original pressing with great soundstage, I got KAOS. But if I wanna take a gamble on a value album or color exclusive, well, it's my money. And I'll enjoy every cent I can out of a decent Walmart album. Happy spinning, Melinda! Thanks so much for sharing some of your Walmart finds!

Hi Melinda, I agree with everything you said about Wal-Mart. I do not understand why some people think that buying vinyl at Walmart is bad. I have a small Walmart near me, about 1/4 the size of a super WalMart but they still have a pretty good selection of Vinyl records. I totally agree that the displays they use are terrible at Walmart. Interesting topic and I'm an outsider on the issue. I don't have access to the Walmart Exclusives (WE) where I am here in Canada, though I'm sure at the price point I hear about, I'd succumb for a select few records (because I'm a record addict...plain and simple). I personally avoid Walmart but I don't have an issue with anyone who likes shopping there. Late last year, a buddy of mine accidentally doubled-up on WE of Led Zep's Physical Graffiti, and I was the benefactor...and I have to say, I was pretty impressed with how flat and quiet the vinyl was. It stands as my only WE experience. All of that said, since the pandemic, I've made a concerted effort to move a lot of my record purchases away from the that other BIG (rain forest) company, to my favorite local indie shop whose prices have remained competitive; though for some releases (ex: Acoustic Sounds releases) in this country, it tends to still be cheaper on the former (IF you can jump on the pre-order EARLY). For the 'record' 😉 I do not believe Metallica has their own record plant (though I could be wrong). I didn't look them all up but for instance, according to Discogs, the Kill'em All Jump in the Fire Walmart exclusive you showed had its lacquer cut by Chris Bellman and was apparently pressed at Pallas in Germany, but was Manufactured By - Pallas USA and P.USA appears in the dead wax...so pressed in Germany but the package itself was sleeved and sealed in the US? Lastly, I scooped up the latest 2022 release of Master of Puppets (along with a bunch of other records) as part of a 20% off Boxing Day sale (MoP cost me $18 cdn or about 13.50 usd) and appears cut by Levi Seitz at Blackbelt Mastering in Seattle and pressed at RTI. Fantastic sound quality / cost ratio! Hard to beat. Just sharing some info for collectors on both sides of the border ;)

Good evening! Metallica does have their own record press in Germany according to the article I read. Maybe not a whole pressing plant. I'm sorry if I got that wrong. The whole article about them may be wrong. Lol. Either way, they have done a really good job with the Metallica catalog. I do understand why people avoid that other way of buying records. I love the rain forest reference. 😃 Thanks for the comment. I like your writing style. Take care.

@@MelindaMurphy Hey, me again..and thanks i.e. my writing style 📝😃. Only answering today as I was actually out last night to see Canada's own Sloan perform an excellent 2 tight sets of 30+ tunes (basically a career retrospective), but also a set loaded with their new 2022 album Steady (it was one of my top 10 records from last year and not because of a Canada bias (honest!), just because it was really good :). I too was not certain about Metallica so I did some digging just now. Is it possible you read the Loudwire article at some point from 10+ years ago where they announced them launching a new record "label", Blackened Recordings? which would be responsible for marketing and promotion, whereas Rhino Entertainment would "manufacture and distribute its releases in North America" (which I think means Rhino would use the existing record plants) and it appears to be reputable plants like RTI or Pallas USA? Source: blabbermouth.net/news/metallica-takes-ownership-of-its-masters-launches-new-record-label Anyway, I'm not trying to be a pain; moreover trying to set the 'record' straight about something I opened my comment-mouth about and because you have so many followers. I agree with you though. Short of paying through the nose for those early recordings, these modern pressings offer a way for many young fans to get access to affordable yet excellent sounding records in a vinyl collecting era where that is rare. Peace ☮

I buy albums from Walmart on occasion and have had no problem with the quality. My wife works at our local Walmart, so I tend to peruse the albums if I'm waiting for her to clock out. I'm one of those people who happen to like "greatest hits" and "best of" sets, especially if it's an artist that I find of only casual interest. While shopping at the local mom & pop stores is helpful to the local economy in general, I would point out that Walmart employs a lot of the local citizens. A significant number of those employees are north of age 50 as am I (ok I way north of 50) and they rely on that employment for health benefits. Back to the albums, my biggest frustration is one you pointed out, the way they are displayed. There is no organization (i.e. alphabet) to them and they tend to be jammed in the racks very tight. I have run across a few albums that are on my wish list. By the way, I'll have to be on the lookout for that "Poison Greatest Hits" album you showed us.

Hey Melinda, no we don't have Walmart here but no you shouldn't feel guilty about shopping for records there either particularly if the prices are reasonable. I can also relate to the interaction with staff when they remember you or if you've become a regular. It's funny I've seen it from both sides of the counter. I was a music store retailer that had regular customers that would come in to my shop and buy, talk music or other stuff. As a retailer I got a buzz when I found something for a customer that a big 'chain store' couldn't manage. That's a key part to building that relationship with customers. Help them and they invariably will come back to your store and so will their friends and family maybe. 😊 Those days are sadly rare now. With your Poison LP, you could've done an unsealing of it during this video lol. Having an upopened record is out of character for you. Hope you do and show us what it's like. "Feeling guity about buying records from WalMart...." why should we? It's a department store like Goldblatt's, Sears. Korvette's, etc., were years ago. There were stand alone records shops then as well as the department stores - same thing these days. What's the problem? Same goes for Target.

I agree with you. My mom used to buy our records from Kmart when we were kids. This has been going on for a very long time. Thank you and take care.

I have nothing against Walmart. I love their prices especially as you said their holiday specials of 15 dollars. I just played the four I purchased during the holiday. They sound wonderful. Enjoyed your video as always.

Hell yea! Those Metallica albums are cool! I am waiting to pick up the 45rpm cuts - I will have them all, but they are EXPENSIVE (~$180+) on the used market.

Great video Melinda! People should feel free to buy the music they love, wherever they choose, imho. Also, through my wheeling and dealing down at the shop I wound up with an extra copy of the new Cats In Space album "Kickstart The Sun" It's on diablo red vinyl, and I really believe you would like this record, think Grand Illusion, updated, since I already have a copy on hero yellow, I thought I would send this one your way, if that's ok, thanks for listening, Have a great week.

I don't generally shop at Walmart for personal reasons, but I will bend the rules occasionally for something that's exclusive, like the Def Leppard "Hysteria" POP set I recently showed on my channel. But I don't see any problem with it when they do the sales especially - as you said, you are helping the local economy, and they're only carrying "mass market" titles, so it's going to have a minimal effect on the mom and pop stores in the area. Love the teeshirt, by the way! Cheers! - TC

It's nice to have Walmart to sell records of to sell reissues of older titles at affordable prices vs original pressings that can be very expensive or hard to find. You will only pay a retail price for the record. Some record titles have gone up in value for a collector market from Walmart. Walmart is good for the beginner of buying records of starting a collection. As far as turn tables is to shop around to find a decent quality at an affordable price that won't damage the records
