Have you ever wondered why Carbon Fiber costs so much?? Well, this video will show you what makes carbon fiber the most expensive material to build cars out of, and why it is usually reserved for cars that cost $100,000 or more. We will look at the manufacturing process and the costs associated with each step. This will show how the cost goes from $3 per pound to $15 per pound when creating carbon fiber used in automobiles, airplanes, bicycles, scooters and other aerospace products.

After I watched this video, I looked up the history of carbon fiber on Wikipedia and my head nearly exploded. It's a very complicated manufacturing process as you guys stated, and they're even math equations involved with the whole procedure. 🤯🤯

Great video. Very informative. I should point out there is a historical parallel to this issue. Two hundred years ago, cotton was very expensive to process also, due to the need for human labor (slaves) to manually separate the cotton from the cotton seeds embedded in the raw cotton fibers. When the cotton gin was invented, machines could then separate the seeds from the raw cotton. This greatly multiplied the efficiency and throughput of cotton manufacturing, greatly reducing the time and expense of manufacturing. While carbon fiber obviously doesnt have seeds, new technological discoveries have been shown to improve the product while reducing its wholesale cost.

Love the video and answered my question. It’s not practical as far as price for the average consumer. It’s 5x stronger than steel and 70x lighter. Race cars that are in events that tend to have accidents probably shouldn’t use them on the exterior unless cost is not a factor. This also leads a way to considering other material that would be similar in strength and weight values because this is far from practical.

Buying parts is insanely expensive however, you can buy 3k twill weave for a decent price and go from there skinning etc, if you are looking for 1k or 2k CF the price will sky rocket just google it and you will see why. If you want the strength without the price and don't care for the look or weight, S Glass FRP would be the way to go!!

It's lighter than common materials, therefore the car gets lighter, which means faster acceleration/better fuel economy/higher top speed etc. And yes it looks nice :)

Yes it is very often painted. Cars like the RCF proudly display beautiful polished carbon fiber, but when it is used in structural bits it doesn't look nearly as nice and needs to be painted over

Sounds like a very environmentally unfriendly process that requires a lot of energy and time to produce, polluting our planet. Hopefully, it falls from favor soon, except for the most expensive aviation and automobile uses where strength at low weight are important.
