I just viewed your video on coolant (colors and applications). I'm old school plus I sold cars for 31 years. I'm a car savvy guy, worked on cars until moden technology made fixing your own car almost impossible. A couple of months ago I had to have my water pump replaced. 2013 Dodge Durango w/ Hemi. I trust this mechanic and his team (Oops, did I say 'mechanic' instead of tech?). He said he flushed and refilled my cooling system. For some reason I felt warmer than usual air coming into t he car. I took it to him and he said to wait until until it cooled down to remove the radiator cap , like the next morning to make sure it had properly burped . The next morning before starting my Durango I removed the radiator cap and the coolant looked like brownish rusty water. I went back and asked what was up. Jake said he'd used Gold coolant and not to be surprised. It's runny very cool, nowhere near the hallway mark even at a prolonged idle with the air on. Ralph

My question is about changing the coolant and switching from one to another. My Hyundai manual says that the fluid shall be ethylene glycol with water. Nothing more specific than that. No special requirements. The original coolant dye is green. Most coolants in the market aren't green. Is it normal to flush the system and use red dye hoat coolant, the asian one from zerex, rather than the original one? It is for sure not only water with ethylene glycol, and also its dye is different.

Very informative vid. Thanks. So your "good rule of thumb" of keeping the same coolant that came with the vehicle is interesting as Ford initially started with the Orange coolant for my 2013 Explorer Sport BUT they've since changed from that. They no longer recommend orange and instead recommend Yellow as a direct replacement. Supposedly you can simply dump yellow into the system and it's supposed to work properly - no flush needed. I dunno, all that sounds sketchy to me and sticking with the orange sounds like the way to go. Thoughts?
@dannyjohnsonsgarage

It’s hard to say what they changed it and if it can be mixed, but the most sure way is to drain it all and replace it with all the same stuff. Especially as it breaks down over time with heat.

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage- Thanks for the quick reply! Ford's owners manual says first service at 100k but then 50k after that. I'm just shy of 100k and was going to do a drain and refill with PEAK Orange. During the drain, I'm going to check the fluid to make sure it doesn't look too bad.....already tested as still good. SO I'm thinking drain and refill should be OK, no flush needed. And then maybe do the same every 30k or so. Thoughts?

Every car is designed by a different team of people. Those engineers all look for the best stuff they can use in their time-period. So long as it’s commercially viable. So really the only way to know is to read the owners manual, then check out owners-clubs/forums to see what they think is best from ownership experience. My entire brand of car (Subaru) wasn’t mentioned. It uses a purple coolant, which he did mention is commonly found in Asian manufacturers. To be honest I’m surprised at how much useful background information I got out of this video, despite no specific advice for my car, definitely worth it :)

Silicate (When mixed with Ethylene Glycol) forms thick cloudy type gel. It is understood that Silicate is used as Rust Inhibitor. My concern is if turns gel or get thicker over the period of time, it might lead to clogging. Really need an expert's opinion here. Thank you.
@John-rw9bv
@John-rw9bv 2 жыл бұрын
Silicates, which makes one think of glass and silicone epoxy, are very inert, thats really it’s main feature, even when used in semiconductors it’s an inert background on which more interesting ions are inserted. If you wanted hard there are better ceramics, if you want lubricating there are better oils/liquids, but if you don’t want stuff to grow on it silicon-something is an inexpensive choice. So I can’t say what the Ethylene Glycol will do over time, but I can’t imagine the addition of silicone will cause it to change overtime. It’s gonna change during the addition but not over time. There are some radiator-sealers/repair additives that use silicon to plug up holes, and they are supposed to be flushed out after a certain number of minutes of being added to the system. It’s usually a small bottle and you add it to the coolant system after doing lots of pure water flushing, adding only water, letting the car get up to temp, then cool enough to add sealer, then run for 8 minutes, then dump it all and add fresh coolant. Perhaps if that stuff is used and never removed the loop will get high resistance to flow over time, like it was gumming up.

@Danny Johnson’s Garage it's been okay since. From my research and phone call to Napa, it seems that the important factor was that I had yellow (low silicate) HOAT antifreeze in the truck. Had I had orange (silicate-free) HOAT in the truck and mixed in the bright green (high silicate) IAT, there may have been a mixing issue.

Interesting, but I don't know anyone that flushes their coolant system or really cares about what antifreeze they mix or don't mix. If you need to add a lot of antifreeze, there's already a bigger problem. Better to mix antifreeze than not have enough. The biggest issue that I see is that people generally don't check Fluid levels. It's notn pumping any heat because it's three liters down. It overheated because, it's three liters down. The big question is why is it three liters low? Being concerned about distilled water is pointless. Antifreeze has been sold premixed for years. If you are mixing your own, that's the only time you may need to be concerned about it. Seriously though, who mixes their own? Coolant has never been the issue for me. It's always some other failing part. A hose,radiator, pump,heater core, thermostat, etc. I've owned a lot of freakin vehicles. Always some other issue causing problems. Coolant type was never the issue.

Prestone 50/50 would be fine. @@dannyjohnsonsgarage I recently completely flushed my cooling system and replaced the coolant. I did a very thorough flush using a radiator flush kit, distilled water and flushing several times. I removed my thermostat, put the heater on high and drained my reservoir tank. I had completely clear water draining out prior to re-adding coolant. I added 2 jugs of the new coolant which was prestone concentrate. The jugs were 3.78L each for a total of 7.5L of concentrate added. The capacity of my cooling system is 15.3L so I figured that using 7.5L of coolant would give me a 50/50 mix (or very close) which is what is recommended. After doing this I went to a local oil change shop and asked them to test the ratio using there ANTIFREEZE COOLANT TESTER. They sucked up a sample and said it was good for about -35 C. They explained that this was a little warmer than they usually go (they like to see -45 to -50) but because I live in a place which rarely goes below zero and never below -10 then it should be fine. I did not have them test the acid/ph level at this time. 2 weeks later (today) I went for an oil change and they tested my coolant with a little strip of paper. My PH level was 5.5 which is low (should be a min of 7 and ideally between 9-10). The test was conducted right in front of me so am not concerned about them misleading me. My question is (which they weren't able to answer) if I drain out some of my coolant and add some more of the concentrate (making my ratio stronger) will that increase my PH level? I've tried to look on google but can't find anything specific. Is my PH level low because my ratio of water is on the high side, or does the ratio of coolant to water have nothing to do with the PH level.... thanks.. Here is a link to a video of my flush... if you watch the first 3 mins you'll see the original coolant... it looks orange which everyone says is CHRYSLER HOAT... but my owners manual says its OAT and warns specifically not to use HOAT. Some people tell me that the HOAT is also called G-05... while others say G-05 is OAT? I would appreciate your opinion on it if you have the time... as you'll see in the video my original coolant was very dirty looking and gunky... not sure what to do now to bring my PH level up to normal. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2HCd4OvrJp1qcU

It depends on which red and yellow they actually are, so you’re best off draining the system entirely to fill it with only one. Do not mix is the best advice

Colors don't matter. If its glycol coolant, color doesn't matter at all! Every other company use different color.

The color matter because it’s how it differentiates which coolant with what chemicals and lubricants it has. You don’t want to mix them as the video talks about

Nowadays, I'm hearing of oil-based coolant. What is this? One source on the Internet says the coolant is oil-based as long as glycol is included.

You could be right about the colors as other sources on KZbin talks about dye as per manufacturer specification. The important thing is to know the coolant ingredients.
