Don't forget to check their video contest, create your own video with #DarkNemesis, you will have a chance to win gift cards and in-game rewards! (see how to join on twitter @DarkNemesis_iq) Elden Ring has sold 12 Million copies in less than a month. Which is INSANE! But what's more surprising is how it's done that while defying all the terrible trends of Modern Gaming.

Over bloating health and damage dose not equal interesting game play. When you play Elden Ring you can see the passion, soul and effort they put in. They took everything they learned from previous titles and expanded on it. All for the same price as the previous games. Meanwhile EA did the complete opposite with Battlefield 2042, charged up to $120, and didn't even have a scoreboard on release. Fromsoft is still making mostly finished games.

Dude, when I discovered that I was so pumped. I think it is natural and acceptable for people to 'not care' beyond baseline success. That allows for a very healthy range of choices and reactions ranging from "you failed to even give the most basic shit" to "under no circumstances were you required to do this, but you did so anyways". Miyazaki & co may not be everyone's cup of tea, but as someone who abandoned Bloodborne on release only to come back later due to the KZbin lore community and become absolutely addicted to the entire franchise, holy shit my guy, FromSoft is like the AboveAndBeyond train that has no brakes. They are the living embodiment of the long, hard, sure road to success; they've shown unapologetic commitment tempered by disciplined authenticity, a humble love for the moments of joy and awe their games have virtually become a byproduct for, as well as a dash of malicious, predatory, grounded realism. In a way, FromSoft acts a lot like a real-life cell or immune system in the critical ways that are abjectly lacking in the majority of the industry. Namely, once FromSoft decides what is good, they have stayed true to that vision regardless of peer pressures. For Demon's Souls (OG game), it was the Vice President of Sony saying the game was dogshit. For Sekiro, it was seemingly every games propagandist *cough* I mean journalist and their brother/uncle/mother/daughter. A cell without a cell wall is the most inclusive thing on earth. It is also dead without exception. Likewise an immune system is trusted absolutely with defense of the greater whole and must be absolutely ruthless in its simple recognition of what is/isn't 'the body'. The immune system isn't attacking anything as much as it is simply reinforcing the original image of what the body should be. If you choose to paint a picture and another brush comes along and actively interferes with your vision, yeeting it off your canvas is the most basic possible requirement to self-validating your vision as a painter, if you will. Within the uncompromising harshness of these borders, however, there is a true opportunity for life in abundance to take root and flourish. Souls players KNOW the sheer "come, taste, and see that it is good" X factor under the 'git gud' surface, which is why I think so many players readily hop into the gatekeeping trenches. It isn't arbitrary - it is a voluntary sanity check for those who can't be told why overcoming adversity is a good thing - we all have to experience it to truly taste and see it is good for ourselves in a way that words alone will always fail to convey. Sorry for the rant. The long & short of it I guess is that there's probably nothing I love more than someone who chooses to do an unbidden good thing, above and beyond any expectation of duty or reward, especially when done in the face of peer pressures/when it is explicitly unpopular/when doing such will earn you open scorn & ridicule. FromSoft seems to manage an incredible resilience overall to both internal rot (level of effort and love they pour into their games; e.g. dare I say the Souls games HAVE soul) and external rot (coercive, manipulative, ill-fated influences to conform or otherwise abandon FromSoft's chosen principles). ant over

Fun history fact for everyone mispronouncing Evergaol: Gaol is how the word "Jail" was spelt for centuries up until the early 1800s, when book publishing within the USA became so popular that the American spellings of English words started to take over as the accustomed way to write these words. In Elden Ring, when you are doing a Evergaol bossfight, you are fighting a prisoner sentenced for eternity.

You even hear Blackguard tell how he was in "gaol" with Dungeater, and pronounces it "jail". Makes it fun when some Evergaols have Stonesword key goblins, and you then technically just remove one of the locks that would keep them in, just to make their life sentence a death sentence >:D

Yep. Miyazaki has flat out lied to upper management/business in order to implement mechanics and features in the souls games. Wheras any other dev team would have just just rolled over and let the business-side tell them what to do. For example, Miyazaki didn’t tell upper management about the “souls” system when he was working on demons souls, because he knew they would tell him to remove it. They also asked him to not include the praise the sun gesture in dark souls, because they said it was “too uncool”. So he lied and told them that devs removed it even though they didn’t lol.

Miyazaki also didn't come from a game development background. He was originally an office manager who also worked in programming for financial software. Unlike creatives in roles of authority who can't lead worth a flip (Ken Levine, Swery65, etc) Miyazaki already had real world experience in a position that necessitated merit for the hire. Everyone's experience of the game is so unique and you could talk about it endlessly, overall just a great feeling of community I haven't had in any videogame for a long time and this is coming from a person who's played mostly multiplayer games since forever, apart from FromSoft games and miscellaneous single player games like TW3 here and there. This is my second FromSoft game I've gotten to play right from its release, the first one being Sekiro, and I can't imagine how people must've felt when they've released their previous titles. Although Elden Ring has really captured the whole gaming world for almost a month now and it's yet to show signs of stopping. I think this game came at the perfect time in terms of the gaming industry and the real world itself, things are looking really dark but at least we have this to raise our spirits.

Elden Ring has made an embarrassment out of the rest of """modern gaming""" by being so incredibly good while also having zero ways to extract additional money from the player. I completely agree that despite reaching crazy levels of hype, Elden Ring somehow still exceeded expectations. I also agree about the difficulty being tuned just right. The game is undoubtedly hard, but it seems like Fromsoft finally eased up on punishing the player and wasting their time. Elden Ring has virtually no padding in the form of running back to the boss but still manages to have over twice the content of any previous game. They totally could have charged $70 for the game given how much there is to do (not to mention the development time of over 4 years), but they didn't, and that's extremely admirable. After more than 100 hours, I have no major issues with Elden Ring. The worst thing I can say about it is that sometimes it feels TOO big, overwhelmingly so, such that it's hard to commit to any one direction because there are so many branching paths. Obviously this problem will solve itself once I've finished the game and have grown familiar with all the areas. I really am over the moon with how amazing the game is and I'm very happy that Fromsoft is enjoying its incredible success.

This includes rushing games out the door unfinished, aggressive microtransactions, and cutting out pieces of the game to sell as DLC. Games with "boring" graphics and interactive movie games are what sell well. I'm not interested in them either but those games appeal to the largest possible audience and therefore make the most money. Back in the day the only way to make money was to release a good game. “in my opinion” People should really stop saying this and have more confidence in what they are saying. No “ifs” and “buts”, FromSoft absolutely deserves that success. I can think if every other company a decade ago, and they’ve all stagnated since. But they’ve always made new games even knowing Dark Souls success. That IP in every other companies hands would have been milked to death and its direction would have been absolutely destroyed because every current major game companies always chase current trends to put into their game. Look at Demon Souls remake. The graphics look really good, but they sacrificed the art direction the game had. And the UI and menus look like absolute MMO tier garbage with no aesthetic. It’s insane to say how it’s a breath of fresh air seeing a video game company that actually wants to make a game first and foremost. The game industry really has regressed a lot.

No one is really asking for quest markers or UbiSoft style/MMO vomit all over the map. That's just KZbinrs needing something to talk about claiming "THEY" want it. Who's they? Its a strawman. We have custom markers to help somewhat and the NPC patch was VERY welcome. Many would have loved a simple quest log of sorts to keep track, because the writing is cryptic enough, especially when most of the quests refer to places or things you haven't even seen yet, so you have no frame of reference. Google solves that, but it would be nice to stay in-game. Look what Last of Us and Uncharted did with their journals. Extremely well crafted and immersive. It would have fit right in here. Its not like there are that many quests, so an artfully created journal of your interactions with NPC would have been 100X better. But then that's what WIKIs are for and FromSoft knows the players would do their job for them=)
@AlexTaldren
@AlexTaldren 2 жыл бұрын
Markers showing what you have discovered is what I want. They already do it for points of interest, and they just implemented it for some NPCs and merchants, which is good. It doesn't take away from the discovery of things, but does help the player remember things that would be impossible to remember otherwise without a wiki, guide, or notepad. All they need to do from a quest perspective and let you look up the last lines of dialogue NPCs said to you so you can try to continue quests. The fact the game doesn't give you that is a huge oversight.

Elden Ring is my first Souls Game and I’m genuinely having a blast. I vowed to never touch a Souls game in the past because I didn’t want to spend my hard earned money to get my ass kicked and have a terrible time. I never saw the appeal in a game that was touted to be so ungodly difficult. I saw all the hype and acclaim for Elden Ring and decided to give it a go and I am in love. Sure, it’s hard. But what I love is that it isn’t impossible. I can actually do it. The satisfaction you feel when you clap a boss that was giving you trouble is second to none. It’s a very beautiful game and the open world is doused in mystery and has me really hooked on this world’s lore and the going ons. The community aspect is also something I didn’t expect from Elden Ring. Everyone is so supportive and the knowledge that people are suffering with me, and that people have conquered the roadblocks I’m facing motivates me to do better as well. I love the collaborative strength of the Elden Ring community because I never feel alone when I’m playing. Even though the reason why I never touched souls games before was the difficulty, the satisfaction that comes from the difficulty is what truly makes this game amazing. EDIT: I beat the game! Thank you for all your support!

souls fans always said that the difficulty of these games were hard but fair, and once you got the mechanics down it wasn't even that hard, but the difficulty was greatly exaggerated by being a meme and by people who didn't play the game. also yeah the community is great, the message of congratulations or 'i did it!' after beating a hard boss or the classic 'don't give up skeleton' they always made me feel part of a community that supports each other. I love reading comments from people new to the genre, I hope you have a good time

Truely said, brother. I barely touched a FromSoft game until now with ER. I didn't expect to be playing 100 hours of the friggin thing, yet I am. That's exactly why we love those games too much, they don't feel impossible, but they're hard and require you to best yourself to stand upon foe after foe. And every successful encounter makes you feel absolutely great, and every defeat makes you want to go back and do better next time, to study the movement and the timing of your enemies go overcome them. That's what I love about these games, and if you like them I'm sure you'll love them as well. Try Dark Souls one or Bloodborne. Both of them are great games from Fromsoftware.

What makes Elden Ring so engaging is precisely one of its biggest criticisms: the lack of quest markers. Because the map doesn’t tell you anything, every inch of terrain has the potential to hold something special. So every step you take is net discovery. Everything feels truly uncharted and worth venturing into, with the looming threat of death at every corner. On Ubisoft games, everything is already marked. When you already know *exactly* where you need to go, why bother with anything else? And thus their maps end up feeling like barren wastelands from the start, no matter how large and bloated they make them. They’re shallow and linear and not worth exploring.

I’m surprised. TheActMan truly hit most of the important points. This can be the easiest souls but only if you use the right equipment (this community including me is stubborn and will make the game more challenging for ourself). Talking about how Elden Ring has DNA from the previous entry is such a beautiful statement, I would add that from Bloodborne the caves from Elden Ring with a boss at the end is a clear reference to Chalice Dungeons! I’ve seen many reviews of the souls game, actually many reviews from back in the day praised having to a difficult and time-consuming run back to fight the boss, but I prefer ActMan’s positive take, let us respawn near the boss and we will make the decision of learning the move-set of a long fight or come back once we are overleveled.

The challenge lying in getting over that hump and then being rewarded with a site of grace location or a unique item or something is really satisfying. It feels like you really accomplished something when you finally reach the checkpoint or reward, and it gives you that "okay what's next" feeling so much more depth because of the fact that what you just went through was genuinely challenging, and made you either have to think about it, or get really good with understanding your opponent like in Monster Hunter. The games have been either awarded Games of The Year (DS2, DS3 for the Golden Joystick Award; Sekiro, Elden Ring for Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards). Even games like DS1 and Bloodborne that didn’t win any GoTY award, they are still hailed as one of the greats of this generation. Hell, even though Armored Core 6 most likely won’t be winning GoTY for 2023, it still shows that FromSoftware and Miyazaki respect their roots and the fans who’s been with them since the beginning. Last night I was playing through Ranni's questline, and managed to get through everything up to and past the Lake of Rot. When I entered the area for the boss that comes after that, I felt like I had just entered Bloodborne 2. It was like a love letter specifically to me and I couldn't be happier with how this game has managed to tie together everything from every previous game seamlessly and beautifully.

I love how that cosmic element was also a part of an already swiped intriguing, deep and rich world. Astela, the falling star beasts as well as most things going on in the underground cities of Nokran and Nokstella were just… amazing. All the new and exciting grounded fantasy you could want with a nice, hefty slice of bloodborne cosmic awe in there as well because they just want to give us more. Love this game.

The most impressive thing is, for the amount of content there is, there are no filler quests, fetch quests, follow missions like Assassins creed or Horizon ,which include these type of missions to increase the playtime. Elden Ring's playtime is determined by you....how much you wanna explore...I think that's the reason why almost everyone have an insane amount of playtime
@ShutUpBubi
@ShutUpBubi 2 жыл бұрын
Dawg what is an insane amount of playtime to you? There isn't even a fraction of the content like in a game like Fallout or Red Dead Redemption 2 where you at a minimum just to beat it are probably looking at 80 hours atleast, but a proper playtime being in the 300-400 range. It's a rehash of their earlier games with nothing new, no innovation no nothing but they sure know how to get your money lol

@@ShutUpBubi you obviously didn't read my entire comment. As much as I love RDR2, it uses so many fetch and follow missions to pad out game time...plus, 80 hours of Elden ring playtime is for a single playthrough. Considering the amount of characters, abilities, weapons and builds, it can go over 1000 hours of replayable value...and i can never bring myself to immediately replay RDR2 or fallout just after I finished it.

“Elden Ring’s playtime is determined by the player” this is how Game should be. If Destiny was like this, I would still be playing it. But they’ve gone the FOMO route and Time Gates everything to create an environment where the game dictates how you play it. Elden Ring doesn’t do this. They actually have content that people WANT to play, not content they HAVE to play. Freedom of choice should be the core foundation of every game.

In a way you are decreasing your difficulty level when you gear up by doing other activities. When you enter a boss fight with a club you play the game on the hardest mode but if u fight the same boss full gear with a great axe you make the difficulty level of that boss go down. So there is in fact a difficulty option in the game only you have to play for it.

I was one of the people that called Elden ring overhyped until a year later I bought it because I was trying to see what the hype was about. I played the game and eventually made it to Godrick and at the moment my addiction began and I truly understood what gaming is and what a good product is. No micro transactions, no greed, good launch. Elden ring really is a masterpiece and I can’t wait to see the next DLC story. One of the best games I ever played.

If you respect the world and take your time to explore, you will find so many resources that can help make any situation easier to deal with. My first play through took 100 hours and it got so ridiculous that the only way I could die anymore was by some unbalanced thing or grossly underestimating my opponents. So yeah if you want to have an easier time go earn it. My second playthrough I decided to bum rush bosses at lower levels and the challenge is significantly higher, bosses that I once steamrolled ended up steamrolling me.

I was starting to get a little too powerful, but not so much because I still get my ass kicked in the late areas. My weapons aren’t one shotting, I have to play strategically, and I could die quite easily by a couple good hits, so the boss fights are exhilarating because I know I could still die. I’m currently batting with the black knife ring leader and I love his fight because you have to dance with him, he will roll catch you, he has slightly awkward timing, does lots of damage and can kill me easily but it’s a fair fight and you can stagger him with skill. My weapons don’t one shot them so it forces you to be patient and strategic, I got him down to 1hp but then rushed in and died, so this game teaches you lessons but it’s so rewarding to finally win. I love the npc invasions, and fighting relatively human sized enemies that you can’t use summons with and you have to dance.

Notification Squad, ASSEMBLE!!!!! Also, I think Elden Ring was so successful because of how it was marketed. I feel like the other Souls games were marketed around their challenge more-so where Elden Ring was marketed more with a focus on adventure. Don’t get me wrong, the challenge is still there like other Souls games but I think it was marketed to gamers as a whole rather than just the hardcore / masochist crowds. All in all, I’m just super happy that this game blew up as much as it did and how much they really delivered with it. The world is vast, there’s so much to do. So much content and variety. For me, it’s what so many “next-Gen” games should be. The hype for it is real, and I’m so damn happy about it. I know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think they really nailed it with this one. I hope the rest of the gaming industry sees it as an example of what to do right.

@@TheActMan :O !!!! Reporting for duty! As an add-on / after-thought to what I said above, I’m looking forward to seeing Elden Ring being the gateway game for plenty of people for the Souls games overall. I started with Bloodborne and it was a rough one to start with (though I think for anyone, their first Souls game is usually the hardest)… based on the sales numbers I think this is a lot of people’s first Souls game. I feel like I read somewhere that Miyazaki gave some pretty wholesome advice to this new crowd along the lines of don’t be afraid of dying. Embrace it as a part of the learning experience. With every time you fight a boss or try to get through an area, you’ll get more experience and get it a bit better at it. Have fun with it and learn the mechanics.
